ULTA PULTA
Legal drug delivery

A man was released from jail. After enjoying a couple of days of freedom, he got bored and began remembering his days in jail. All day he kept uttering that he wanted to go back to jail. His friends and relatives asked him what was it that he was missing terribly. He said, “The uninterrupted supply of pure opium.”

One gets to hear that relatives of some inmates smuggle drugs hidden inside tomatoes, potatoes and other eatables. I think some prisoners become so addicted while completing their jail term that when they are released they pull apart every tomato they come across just to see if there is any drug concealed inside.

A news report says that there are 18,000 prisoners in Punjab and over 30 per cent are charged with illegal possession of drugs. The report says there is a big nexus between the police, some politicians and drug dealers in Punjab. If the jail authorities cannot stop this illegal supply then they should make it legal. Whatever a prisoner earns after a day’s hard work, he should be allowed to buy drugs from an official counter in the jail. A prisoner would say it proudly, “Yeh hamari khoon paseene ki kamai hai.”

A Minister asked the jail superintendent if he could reform any habitual criminals. The superintendent replied, “Yes, many. About 10 have forgotten the art of pick-pocketing and chain snatching, now they only talk about drugs!”
