Tastes of Asia

Culinary Asia is an intelligent and thought-provoking series for gourmets
Culinary Asia is an intelligent and thought-provoking series for gourmets

WHETHER it is the fiery curries of India, Thailand or Malaysia, or the flavoursome dumplings of Korea and Japan, food assumes an almost mystical place in the cultural hierarchy of Asia. Culinary Asia every Tuesday at 8 P.M. on the Discovery Channel looks East to this hotbed of nutritional innovation and diversity. Koreans see food essentially as medicine to nourish and balance the body, and attempt to present both yin and yang in the dishes they serve. In Japan, the principle of Kodawari, obsessive and passionate perfectionism, is often practised by sushi chefs, with only the most experienced allowed to handle the finest cuts of tuna. Destinations such as India and Thailand have exerted massive influence on the world’s cuisine by absorbing and then reinventing dishes brought into their country by foreigners. Anyone fascinated by food will find this intelligent and thought-provoking series to be exactly to their taste. The show is a culinary journey and presents diverse foods of some of the most exotic kitchens of Asia.

Dance to fame

IT is a chance to dance and achieve worldwide fame. Britannia High from Monday to Friday at 9 p.m. on Zee Café is set in a contemporary British performing arts school. Here talented young people strive to achieve their dreams of musical, theatrical and dance success.  Students of this school are not just working to be the best, but also gain knowledge of life and the obstacles that have to be overcome. The series follows the trials, tribulations, highs and lows of a group of young people, who are ambitious, intelligent and charismatic. They are bursting with talent and vying for centre stage, particularly when it comes to the school’s end-of-term showcase, as each of the students will perform for an enthusiastic audience. There are also cameo appearances from some of the top pop groups like Girls Aloud and Boyzone. — NF
