Integrate GPS to check accidental deaths: Report

The number of deaths occurring due to accidents in the country is touching new heights. In 2010 around 9000 people died in different accidents in Punjab alone, revealed a study report conducted by Prof RS Uppal and Prof Sanjeet Singh, of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib.

The report stated that major cause for the deaths was ambulances not reaching the spot on time. The report suggested that integration of the GPS technology should be used by various hospitals and other institutions running ambulances.

The information regarding requirement of ambulance at a spot shall, in this way, be recorded on the system, and the nearest ambulance (no matter, of which hospital/institution) shall be made to reach the spot.

Army man found hanging

Ambala, February 21
A body of an Army man was found hanging from a hook of an Army truck this morning. The deceased was identified as Prashant Kumar (27), resident of Kerala.

Sources said Prashant was gunner in MT unit at Ambala Cantonment. The police suspect it to be suicide.

One of his colleagues spotted Prashant’s body hanging with a rope on the hook of the truck in the morning.

He informed a senior officer immediately. Prashant was rushed to the Army Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The body was shifted to the civil hospital for the postmortem examination.

7-month-old foetus found in drain

Ambala, February 21
A seven-month-old female foetus was recovered from a drain at Milap Nagar in Ambala City, here today.

The foetus was noticed by some sweepers who were cleaning the drain. The matter was informed to the police and the health department but none of the officials of those departments reached the spot even after one hour.

The sanitary inspector, Sunil Kumar, took out the fetus from the drain with the help of other sweepers and wrapped it into a cloth. The police shifted the foetus to the civil hospital for the postmortem examination.

The police said it could not be established so far about who had thrown the foetus in the drain.

The police, however, has started the investigation. Last month, too, a 9-month-old foetus was recovered from a drain close to the civil hospital.

Employee arrested on theft charges

Panchkula, February 21
The Panchkula police has arrested Ravi Kumar, an employee of Berkeley Automobiles in Industrial area, Panchkula, under theft charges.

The police said that the company staff had caught Ravi, who was working in the cleaning department, with spare parts. During investigation, the police also recovered three mobile phones, which were stolen from customers.

The accused was produced before a local court today, which sent him for one-day police remand.

One held for stalking girl

Chandigarh, February 21
The UT police today arrested a resident of the Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula, for eve-teasing and stalking a class-VII student.

The complainant’s family had verbally told the police about it. The police today laid a trap near a private school in Sector 40 and arrested the suspect, Vishal Kapoor (28), under Section 294 (obscene acts and songs) of the IPC. He was later granted bail. The class-VII student had told her parents about the accused, who was married and had a daughter. The parents had contacted the UT police, following which a trap was laid.

Robbery foiled, five arrested

Chandigarh, February 21
In a major breakthrough, the crime branch of the Chandigarh Police today foiled a major robbery by arresting five persons from Sector 15 here today.

Two pistols, knives and rods were seized from their possession. Two of the accused were wanted for murders in Punjab and the other were accused of petty crimes.

A case under Section 302 of the IPC had been registered against Gurvinder Babna of Patiala. He had stopped a car at Sohana and killed the driver after robbing him.

Sher Singh Shera had been accused in many snatching cases and was wanted by the Patiala police for two murders committed during a snatching bid.

Besides them, Ravinder and Maninder of Balongi and Ankit Kumar of Patiala were also nabbed. A crime branch official said this was the third gang they had busted so far.

They were planning a major robbery in the city, though the target was yet to be revealed, he added

The police would also question them for various crimes they were suspected of having committed, he further said.

Missing youth found dead in pond at Sohana

Mohali, February 21
The body of a missing 22-year-old youth of Sohana, Subodh Kumar, was found floating in a pond behind the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sohana, here this morning. The youth had been missing from his house since February 10.

Subodh was a student of BA II year in a local college. A passerby noticed the body and informed the villagers. Sources said the deceased used to go to a gym every morning. On February 10 also, he went to gym but did not return. “We kept on finding him but when he was untraceable, we lodged a complaint of missing with the police on February 14,” said the father of the victim.

The DSP, city-II, Darshan Singh Mann, said, “The boy went missing on February 10 and his father lodged a formal missing complaint with us. Today, we received a call that a body of youth has been located in a pond,” said the DSP.

Sources added that there was no suicide note found from the possession and from Subodh’s house and the reason of the death is still unclear. The report of the post mortem was awaited. The police has initiated the proceedings under Section 174 of the IPC.

2 killed, 6 injured in separate accidents

Zirakpur, February 21
In a head on collision, a management graduate was killed and six others were injured after the auto-rickshaw, they were travellnig in, collided with a Tata Safari coming from the opposite direction near a gurdwara on the Zirakpur-Patiala Highway, today morning.

A police official said that after the preliminary investigations, the incident took place soon after the SUV overtook another vehicle.

The deceased had identified as Harpreet Singh (24), a resident of Neelpur village, Rajpura city. The injured have been identified as Gurnam Singh, auto-driver; Brijesh Kumar, Mange Lal, Girish Kumar, Panna Lal, a resident of Dhakoli and Jaswinder Kaur.

The police said the incident happened around 11 am when the overloaded auto-rickshaw was going towards Banur side from Zirakpur.

While it reached near the Gurdwara, the SUV driven by Amar Raj, a resident of Karnal rammed into the auto-rickshaw.

A passerby informed the police immediately, w took the injured to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where the two of them were discharged after giving them first aid, while five persons were referred to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The police said the deceased Hapreet Singh died during the treatment.

The SHO Zirakpur, Yogi Raj, said that the body of the deceased would be handed over to his family after the postmortem examination tomorrow. While a case has been registered against Amar Raj, a resident of Karnal on the complaint of the father of the deceased.

Sources said that the ambulance 108, provided by the Punjab Government, had allegedly reached the spot after half an hour.

RICKSHAWS OVERLOADED

Residents rue that the traffic police had failed to check on the overloaded auto rickshaws in the town. They demanded the police should penalise the violators. In another incident, a 40-year-old man, Shiv Pujan Yadav, was killed after a speeding truck hit his motorcycle on the Chandigarh-Ambala Highway. The injured had been identified as Gurpal Singh, a resident of Baltana. The incident happened around 11.30 pm when the deceased were going towards Zirakpur. The police said the deceased was an employee with a tavern at Dera Bassi.

ITF MEN'S FUTURE TENNIS
4 Indians in 2nd round

Four Indians made it to the second round in the singles of the ITF Men’s Future US$ 10,000 Tennis Tournament being played at the CLTA Lawns, here today.

The first singles was won by Mathhieu Vierin (Italy) when his Indian opponent, A Rajagopalan, retired from the contest after losing the first set 6-4 and trailing 2-1 in the second set because of pain in the shoulder.

N Sriram Balaji won the first set 6-3 but had to fight back a spirited rally from Sam Berry(Ireland), who fully extended him 6-3, 7-6(1) in the second set.

The match between two qualifiers, Hsien Yin Peng (Taiwan) and Akash Wagh (India), saw Peng notch a straight sets win 6-3, 6-2. Miles Bugby (Great Britain) cried off and his place was taken by lucky loser Mark Alexander Keplar (Germany) who lost to 7th seed Sarvar Ikramov (Uzbekistan) 6-2, 6-4. Richard Gabb (Great Britain) lost the first set 6-4 to the fourth seed Kento Takeuchi (Japan) and thereafter, retired with stomach cramps. Saketh Myneni 8th seed from India made short work of James Feaver (Great Britain) in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Qualifier Jordi Munoz Abreu (Spain) had an easy outing against Kaza Vinayak Sharma who crashed out in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The All-India clash between Murugesan R Virali and M Jayaprakash resulted in a see-saw struggle with Murugesan piping Jayaprakash at the post in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.Rupesh held his nerve to clinch the first set 7-6(5) when Gajjar made a spirited effort to contain his opponent in the second set only to lose 6-4.

The first doubles match between Vivek Shokeen and Sanam K Singh saw the pair sweep their opponents Vignesh Peranamullur and Akash Wagh off their feet in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Similarly, in the second doubles match, the Indian pair of Vijay Kannan and Arun Rajgopalan came out triumphant against the pair of Mark Alexander Kepler (Germany) and Kaza Vinayak Sharma of India in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Eesha of Saupins School, Sector 32, bagged first prize in the shot put (U-14) at Inter-School Athletics Meet 2011-12, started here today. Monika of GMHS, Sector 26, stood first while Harjot of Governemnt Model Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra, got the bronze medal. Over 700 boys and girls shall take part in the three-day meet at Sports Complex, Sector 7.
