Fountain of  Creativity
Theatre thespian Usha Ganguli may have faced many challenges in her long journey, but nothing has nor can diminish the spark with which she illumines her thought-provoking productions
Nonika Singh

In the world of theatre thespian Usha Ganguli, nothing happens by chance. Meticulous planning, painstaking detailing and endless rehearsals make her theatre what it is — a power to reckon with. Not surprising then, even after 41 shows of her Hindi play Chandalika that she brought to Chandigarh as part of Natyanjali organised by Sangeet Natak Akademi in association with Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, she goes over the minutest details, understanding fully that when stage changes so do images. Egging her actors to excel, this perfectionist quips, "An actor works with 12 eyes…."

Well, she sure seems to have not only multiple eyes but also many hands. What else can explain the fact that she not only directs, acts and designs, but even writes her plays! On the need to turn a playwright she says, "What can one do… today I want to say something to my audiences on drugs and rehabilitation, and I don't have a ready play on the subject. So the only option is to write it or to adapt from the existing literary texts of which we have a rich treasure trove." Tagore, on whose story Chandalika is based and whose four writings have been the inspiration behind her Bengali play Manushi, she says "was a visionary who could see India 100 years ahead."

Thus, untouchability many may think is a not a concern of today. She reasons, "Even today we fight elections on the basis of castes and misuse our religion." The decadent practices prevalent in our religion pain her greatly and was the subject of her much-acclaimed play Kaashinaama as well. Violence, women's problems are some other issues that have emerged time and again in her productions. Today as her theatre group Rangkarmee has clocked 36 years, she thinks what has stood her in good stead is the ruthless sieving of scripts. No doubt that acting, design and direction all go on to make a play, but she asserts, "The real ground is laid by the script, which is the base of creativity."

In her discerning selection process she makes no room for what others want. She says, "We don't hanker after box-office success. Nor are we out to please this or that group, we are only guided by serious socio-political thinking." The strength of her plays also lies in the visual language that this trained Bharatnatyam dancer has evolved over the years. Though more recently, Usha, a former lecturer in Hindi, is doing plays in Bengali and has done a multilingual play as well, her first, she thinks, "Language is important only up to a point. A play speaks through movements, music, bodies of actors and simplicity of design." So she tells how ten minutes after the staging of her play Kaashinaama in Germany, subtitles became redundant.

As her group has grown from a five-member to a 90-actor troupe, she confesses that the going has not been easy. She says, "It is very difficult to be a woman director. Every day I create an inch of creative space and each day I have to ensure that I retain it." At 66, she could easily call it a day… but as she looks at the likes of indefatigable Zohra Sehgal she is charged anew. Among her many dreams figure the desire to be directed by another director; to convert the 3,000 square feet space that she has converted into a studio theatre and to create a play on Partition with Madeeha Gauhar and Sara Zakir. Not to forget her desire to bring Rudaali, which she rates as her best performance, to Chandigarh. The dynamo of energy that bristles on stage as well as off it is certainly not going to lose any of her enthusiasm. Or zeal!

A story to tell
Abbas Khider, who is out with his debut novel in German Der Falsche Inder, says he is often mistaken for an Indian
Manpriya Singh

novel idea: Abbas Khider The only words he knew in German were Lufthansa, Hitler and Sh**! A couple of years down the line, Abbas Khider was out with his debut novel in German Der Falsche Inder (The Fake Indian). "I studied at the University and really didn't think about writing in German because I was already an Arabic writer. It was in the year 2003 when because of Saddam Hussein and related political developments that I could go to Iraq…I decided to come back to Germany and look for realistic dreams; now German is the language of my dreams," says the Baghdad-born and Berlin-based novelist. From here on every bit of the translated interaction with the author at Alliance Francaise, is in itself a story untold.

"I was a fugitive till the year 2000 and unable to stay anywhere because of legal problems," having said this he shares with us how the two years of imprisonment for political reasons became the raw material for his first book, The Fake Indian. "It took me close to three years to write this book…I felt I had this story to tell everybody. I am someone who takes on life intensely, I saw others dying, suffering in jails and it became my duty to share their story with the whole world."

The name, The Fake Indian, calls for an anecdote too. "A lot of people thought I was an Indian because I look like one. Even the people in my own land thought that." The book describes the fate of an Iraqi persecuted in the country of his birth. That's not it. "All the stories are real-life inspired. All the historical events too mentioned in my works are real-life based." He continues, "I had this serious message to give people - in the Arabic world, it is not religion which creates problems, it is the dictators that have destroyed everything."

The protagonist, Rasul Hamid describes in eight different ways how he fled his home country Iraq and tried to live as a refugee. He strays between Northern Africa and Europe, but he never felt anywhere at home again. "The hero Rasul Hamid is the prophet of the good God. The characters, the theme, everything finds an inspiration to what I've experienced and is based on real life." The voices and fates in this debut novel tell a realistic fairy tale.

His second, Oranges from the President, narrates the tale of a young Iraqi boy who spent two years in prison during Saddam Hussein's regime. As for what's next, he wouldn't give way. He laughs, "My publishers will kill me…it's a story of exile, revolution and a love story all woven into one. It's set over several Arabic countries." And he begins to share yet another incident!

Success Mantra
Glittering affair
Mona

Fifteen years ago, Roopa Vohra started with a capital of Rs 10,000. Today her pieces start at Rs 50,000 and the sky is the limit from there on. She will go across the globe to find just the right emerald for a piece. Roopa Vohra is a brand today, well-known for her jewellery and the old world charm it invokes. Known for reviving the dying Thewa art in jewels, Roopa has just put together a jewellery range that she has done from a scratch. "Nothing like this ever existed in our four-to-five thousand years of jewellery history," she says with aplomb.

This famous designer, whose clients swear by her art, right from Rani Mukherji to Kirron Kher to royalty around the world, shares with us the qualities that helped her carve a niche for herself…

Commitment pays

When I started jewellery designing in the 90s, the scene was very different. There were too many obstacles to overcome. It needed unwavering commitment to break into the market; achieving recognition was next to impossible, but commitment helped me achieve my goals.

Sustained hardwork

One needs to constantly work towards one's goal. From when I started to now, there are days when I have worked up to 17-18 hours a day. Thewa collection was something very new to the market. I travelled with my work to jewellery shows to make clients see how it looks visually and how it feels. The shows were tiring. Once someone pointed out my swollen feet to me; I was too engrossed in work to even notice them!

Passion possession

Being passionate towards one's work is the only way forward. Never in my life have I felt creatively challenged. Exploring is my way of living. I read it somewhere that it's better to be an incomplete original than a complete copy.

Sound support

I wouldn't have come this far without my family's support. Having said this, I would add that it takes a man to support his wife's endeavour fully. My daughter Mitaali was five when I started. My hubby Vivek held fort when I was out travelling and in-laws pitched in. It makes me immensely proud that my family is glad to see me happy.

Take a break

I get my biggest inspiration when I am travelling. Not only inspiration, travelling also rejuvenates me. Another mantra to survive this maddening pace of work and life is being physically fit. Whether I am working or travelling, my six kilometres run daily and 100 surya-namaskars a day keep me fit enough to take any challenge head on!

Transition from the back swing to the forward swing
Jesse Grewal

As the shoulders and arms approach the top of the backswing, the lower body – hips and legs begin their move for the forward swing. During this the upper body must hold and not turn immediately. This produces a resistance to the lower body’s turning action and is an important power move. You could create a feel for this if you ask someone to hold your upper body at the top of the swing and try and turn your hips to start the forward swing (picture 1). As the hips and legs drive forward the upper body holds momentarily which flattens the plane of the swing and brings the club’s plane inside the plane of the backswing. If the shoulders turn first instead of the hips the club is thrown outwards and in front of the body which is called ‘coming over the top’. This produces ‘pulled’ and ‘sliced’ shots.

To practice this move, stand next to a wall with your left foot touching the wall. Cross your arms in front of your shoulders. Now turn your shoulders to make a backswing (picture 2) and then, turn your hips so that your belt buckle touches the wall first (picture 3). Make sure your elbows or shoulders do not hit the wall before the belt buckle touches the wall. This will teach you the sequence - the upper body pulling the lower body during the backswing and the lower body pulling the upper body during the forward swing.

Road Rage
Wheel bar
Simranjeet Gill

Almost eight out of ten times we take things around us for granted, for instance our vehicle used for everyday commuting. An important thing that we tend to overlook in our cars is tyre pressure. Ah! how many times do you even care to check the tyre pressure of the car until of course its a flat. What most of us probably overlook is the fact that tyre pressure in vehicle has an important bearing on its performance and safety. An old and worn tyre leads to reduced traction hence skidding or might just burst leaving consequences to your imagination. Safety being paramount, one should check vehicle tyre pressure regularly. In same breadth, there are things that can come in handy while maintaining performance and safety of your vehicle.

n Ensure that the tyres have the right air pressure; the manufacturer specified air pressure. The driving manual has it mentioned or even better, the strip on driver door panel has it in certain vehicles. The specified pressure is the key; no more, no less. Pressure being less, leads to increased wear and tear and reduced fuel efficiency. Pressure being more, leads to a bumpy ride, or even a tyre burst. Tyre Pressure Alert Valve caps for specified pressure come in handy for daily check.

n Maintain uniformity in car tyres; do not mix radial tyres with non radials. This will play a spoilsport in alignment of vehicle and eventually affect its handling.

n Another important thing that must be checked at regular intervals is the wheel alignment. With roads being bumpy here, it only helps to get this exercise done at routine service. Wobbling in tyres can be avoided by getting wheel balancing done.

n Tyre change should happen in specified miles or maximum period stated by manufacturer. Most of new vehicles coming with tubeless tyres, its imperative that tube tyres should have tube and tyre both of same manufacturer.

n The ones habitual of heavy braking, be prepared to shell extra bucks for tyre replacement sooner than expected. Be easy on your wallet, drive slow and safe.

n Clean the tyres regularly, check for small stones that get stuck in the grooves and lead to slow wear and tear.

The actress also said she is still trying to find a place in London after moving from India.

“My heart will always be in Mumbai, but I’ve kind of moved to London. That’s my second home. I love London. Love the city, love the people there. Baring it all

Jennifer Aniston Hollywood beauty Jennifer Aniston, who has gone topless for her upcoming flick Wanderlust, says she doesn’t mind baring it all on the big screen.

The 43-year-old actress, who has shot the film in Clarkesville, Georgia, said she enjoyed staying in a free-love hippy commune, as no one cared about nude actors.

“You do get nervous when there’s a day where it’s oops, I’m naked. I wouldn’t go topless for a cause, going to such an extreme to make a difference. But we’ve been among these people in this environment for almost two months. The topless scene was nothing compared to what happened in the two months prior.

“There was an actor naked the whole time getting his touch-ups and everybody else just having a normal conversation,” Aniston said.
