Annual sports meet kicks off at Sukhmani institute
Dera Bassi, February 13 Students dressed in traditional Punjabi costumes welcomed the chief guests for the event, Prof Avtar Singh, chairman, Sri Sukhmani Group Of Institutes, and Kanwaljit Kaur, director. Students from all the Institutions of the group ie Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology , Sri Sukhmani Institute of Hospitality, Sri Sukhmani Polytechnic for Women, Sri Sukhmani College of Nursing, Sri Sukhmani Polytechnic ,Sri Sukhmani International school, etc participated in various games and events. Rally race, shot put, long jump, tug-of-war were the major crowd pullers. Kanwalji Kaur lighted the lamp and Avtar Singh hoisted the group flag. Speaking to the sportspersons, Avtar Singh emphasised on the importance of sports and games in the life of youngsters and said that it filled them with agility and helped them to accept victory and defeat at the same time. Kanwaljit Kaur urged the students to imbibe sportsman spirit and give their best and enjoy the results. Sports, according to her, shaped the personality traits like team spirit, cooperation and leadership. |

Mechanical branch’s Hardeep wins 800m
Dera Bassi, February 13 Eventts included 800-m race, 400 meters, javelin throw and long jump. Kamal from the nursing institute won the 400- m race in the girlssection. Nirmal Kaur was first in the javelin throw and in the boys’ category, Mukesh won the first prize. The kabbadi semifinals were played among the four houses. The final match of the Kabbadi will be played tomorrow. |
Orders summoning singers quashed
Chandigarh, February 13 Taking up a bunch of four petitions filed by the two singers and other petitioners, Justice Mehinder Singh Sullar also quashed the subsequent proceedings against them. The significance of the judgment can be gauged from the fact that the orders came some 15 years after the allegations of the Copy Right Act's violation were initially levelled against them. Proceedings for declaring Paudwal proclaimed offender too had been initiated. She and other petitioners had sought the quashing of the complaint by Brij Mohan Bhardwaj and the summoning orders issued by Amritsar Chief Judicial Magistrate on January 11, 1997. The CJM, vide the orders, had directed her to stand trial for the Act's violation under Section 420 of the IPC. Directions were also sought for quashing non-bailable warrants of arrest issued against Paudwal on September 16, 1999. Paudwal, through her counsel Hemant Bassi, had contended she "received the shock of her life when she learnt from media reports that she has been declared a proclaimed offender by the Amritsar CJM". Going into the background of the controversy, the CJM had observed the complainant was the son of poet and writer Chaman Lal Ji Bhardwaj. Among the many books he had penned down was Chaman Ki Shree Durga Stutti published by Brij Mohan Bhardwaj Pustakalya, of which his son-cum-complainant was the proprietor. The complainant had contended that the accused recorded and presented a video cassette in the market "Chaman Ki Shree Durga Stutti", which was an infringement of the Act. The CJM had added: "I find that prime facie it is imitation of the book published by Chaman Lal Ji Bhardwaj". Appearing before Justice Sullar, Bassi said Brij Mohan Bhardwaj had "nowhere in his entire deposition deposed that the petitioner or for that matter any accused had any knowledge of the copy right, the infringement of which has been alleged by the respondent". DAD Chess Tournament Tribune News Service

As many as 31 players (24 men and 7 women) from different offices of the Defence Accounts Department (DAD) in the country participated. There are six rounds in the men category. On day one, there were two rounds, on second day, there will be three rounds and on the final day there will be one round. For women, one round will be held daily. The tournament is being conducted as per FIDE (World Chess Federation, Russia) laws of chess and FIDE Swiss system. The last tournament was held in Jaipur in 2009 and Nangkoi Gohain of CDA, Guwahati ,was the champion in the women’s category, while AS Mandal of Principal Controller of Accounts (Factories), Kolkatta, was the winner in the men’s category. Two players participating in the men category — Jitendra Joshi of CGDA, New Delhi, has FIDE rating of 1952 and AS Mandal of PCA, (factories) Kolkatta, has FIDE rating of 1733. Sunil K Kohli, Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Western Command), Chandigarh, inaugurated the tournament. |
Open trials for young bowlers
Chandigarh, February 13 The talent hunters used a speed gun and made video films of the bowlers to facilitate the selection process. The PCA had announced open trials for budding bowlers in the age group of under 16 to 18 years at various centres in Punjab. The first of the series of trials for the players of Chandigarh, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ropar were conducted at PCA Stadium, Mohali. Former state spinners Bharti Vij and Navdeep Singh were assigned the job of spotting the spinners while Harvinder Singh and Yoginder Puri were allocated the task of spotting young fast bowlers along with former Punjab skipper Pankaj Dharmani, the official observer for the trials, at all the venues. These trials are being conducted to spot talent from all avenues and thereafter they will be given specialised training at the PCA State cricket academy with an eye on the future. |
Keen to play Ranji: Shashya
Chandigarh, February 13 In the quarterfinals against Madhya Pradesh played at Indore, Shashya made a brilliant unbeaten 118 n.o. in the first innings. He, however, was unlucky to miss a century in the second innings by 8 runs only. Again in the semifinals, he was able to contribute a big score of 60 runs for his team against Maharashtra. Further, his runs in the tournament were calculated at an amazing average of 135 runs. Shashya has been training under Chandigarh administration coach Nagesh Gupta for the past seven years. “The young cricketer has a lot of zeal and enthusiasm to learn”, said his coach Gupta. Before playing in the Cooch Bihar Trophy, Shashya had participated in -inter-district tournament 11(U-19) and performed excellently. He was able to get 313 runs along with 12 wickets in five matches played against districts of Kinnaur, Solan, Kangra, Hamirpur, and Sirmaur. Earlier in 2007-08 he had played for the Chandigarh Cricket Team (U 14 and U-16) at Mumbai against Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. “After the Cooch Bihar Trophy, now my aim is to play in the Ranji Trophy matches. I am hopeful that I will make it there within next year,” said the budding all rounder. |
