Husband, wife killed as car rams into vehicle

A husband and a wife died in a road mishap near Dera Bassi on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway after their car rammed into a stationary vehicle on Monday night.

As per reports, Sanjiv Raheja and his wife Mirdula Raheja, residents of Mohali, were on their way home in their black Lancer car from Ambala and suddenly their car rammed into a stationary vehicle near Janetpur. Mirdula died on the spot while son Simrat and Vibha, niece of Sanjiv Raheja, sustained severe injuries. They have been admitted at GMCH, Chandigarh. Vibha was reportedly a student of B tech with Doaba college in Kharar. The police ha registered a case against the truck driver under Section 279, 304 A and 427 of the IPC.

Electrician dies in road mishap

A motorcycle-borne youth died on the spot when his vehicle collided with a Haryana Roadways bus at Dera Bassi on Monday night. The deceased was identified as 25-year- old Vikas Kumar, a resident of New Shiv Colony, Jind.

As per reports, he was employed as an electrician with Kudos Chemical and was returning to Dera Bassi when his motorcycle collided with a Haryana roadways bus at Barwala T point at Dera Bassi. He was rushed to Dera Bassi civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The police sent the body for a post-mortem examination after registering a case.

Abducted minor was raped

Ambala, February 1
The Ambala police has recovered a minor girl of Ambala City from Lucknow who was allegedly abducted by a youth about two months ago. Ravinder Kumar, the father of the girl, had registered a complaint with the police that Sandeep, a resident of the Punjab area, had abducted his daughter. The police had registered a case against Sandeep who too was absconding since the missing of the girl.

The police brought the girl to the Civil Hospital at Ambala City for medical examination. The hospital authorities confirmed that the girl was raped. The statement of the girl was also recorded in the court. The police said that the accused would be arrested soon.

Surprise checking of school buses

Ambala, February1
City magistrate Ambala Pratima Chaudhry conducted a surprising checking of school buses this morning to find out whether the guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court are being followed or not.

According to the information received, she checked buses of various schools carrying the students. The school bus of Angel Pubic School was impounded during the drive as it neither had the required documents nor was it painted in yellow colour. The name of the school was also not mentioned on the bus.

Another bus, belonging to the DAV institution, which was carrying more students than its prescribed capacity, was challaned.

The city magistrate said that the campaign would be continued. During the drive, presence of first-aid box, reflector, horizontal grills, fire extinguisher, and attendant in buses would be checked.

Samjhautablasts case
Aseemanand produced in court, hearing deferred

In the Samjhauta blasts case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) produced Swami Aseemanand before a local court here today. The special NIA court deferred the hearing for February 22 as both parties - prosecution and defence - sought time.

In the case, the NIA had already filed a chargesheet against Swami Aseemanand and four others in the Panchkula NIA court. In the chargesheet the agency had accused Aseemanand, Lokesh Sharma, Sunil Joshi (now dead), Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra Kalasangra alias Ramji of hatching a criminal conspiracy, which resulted in blasts in the cross-border train near Dewana railway station in the Panipat district in February 2007. This resulted in the death of 68 persons. A majority of those killed in the blast were Pakistanis.

Precious gems, jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh stolen

Thieves had a field day as three cases of theft were reported from various areas of the city in the past 24 hours.

In the first incident, thieves targeted the Gem Technical Lab at Sector 22, right next to the police station, in the wee hours after breaking the locks. The police registered a case under Section 380 of the IPC.

The shopkeeper reported that the thieves took away precious gems and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh. “The shops nearby remain open till late at night. The thieves broke the lock and entered the shop,” said Ashwani, owner of the shop.

In another incident, Arvinder Singh Sethi of Sector 20 reported that someone stole two wheels of his car (CH38(T)-7288) parked in front of his residence yesterday. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered.

A resident of Ram Darbar reported that someone stole his motorcycle (CH03Z-4196) from his house past night. The police registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC.

In yet another incident, Harish Kumar of Sector 18 reported that someone tried to break into in his shop at Sector 20 past night. A case under Sections 457 and 511 of the IPC was registered.

10-month-old infant recovered
Was stolen during fair at Mansa Devi on Sept 29

The special team of the Panchkula police recovered 10-month-old Nishant, who was stolen during the Navratra fair on September 29 past year.

According to sources, he was recovered from Qadian in Gurdaspur district this evening. The police also rounded up two persons in the case, the sources added.

Anil and his wife Sarita, residents of Pinjore, lost their son during their visit to the Mansa Devi temple after Sarita handed over her son to a couple standing in the queue, saying she needed to drink water.

While handing over the baby, she took the couple’s contact number, which turned out to be fake. On returning five minutes later, Sarita was shocked to find that the couple had vanished with her baby.

The police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for giving information in the case. Three persons sought to cash in on the kidnapping and demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom. Two of them, Ravi and Pradeep, residents of Dera Bassi, were arrested.

PU team defeated the rivals by 31-24 while the LNUPE Gwalior defeated Pt. RSSU Raipur in a one-sided affair by 41-14. MGSU team, Bikaner, routed Utkal University by 30-11 while GND varsity, Amritsar, overcame Kakatiya University by 35-17.

PCA to hold camp for aspiring bowlers
All 16-18 year-old youngsters free to try their skill

In an effort to improve the standard of fast and spin bowling, the Punjab Cricket Association(PCA) has decided to come up with special intensive and scientific training for bowlers from all over Punjab and Chandigarh.

The experts will focus on players in the 16-18 age group. The trials would be conducted at different places in the state. The PCA has invited all youngsters who feel that they have the potential to attend these trials.

St Stephen’s academy drub Paragon school

The cricket team of St Stephens School Cricket Academy defeated Paragon Senior Secondary School, Mohali, by 50- runs in the ongoing Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament, being held here today.

Batting first, the St Stephens team posted a target of 174runs after losing nine wickets in the allotted 25 overs while Talwinderjeet Singh scored 66- runs and Lovish 32 runs in the team’s total. Rishu Chopra also contributed 30 runs. For bowling side, Sidharth took 3 for 25 and Garry claimed 2 for 18.

In reply, Paragon Senior Secondary School, Mohali, could manage to score only 124 runs before getting bundled out in 19.2 overs. Sidhath (42) and Variender (23) were the main contributors for the team. Aman was the pick of the bowlers for taking 5 for 17 while Gaurav grabbed 3 for 20 along with Talwinderjeet Singh, who claimed 2 for 8.

Talwinderjeet Singh of St Stephens cricket academy was declared the man of the match.

Chandigarh crush Jalandhar by six wickets

The cricket team of Chandigarh defeated Jalandhar by six wickets, securing five points, including a bonus, in a match during the FC Mittal cricket trophy held at the cricket stadium in Sector 16, here today.

After winning the toss, Jalandhar opted to bat and were restricted to 210 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. Skipper Taruwar Kohli scored an unbeaten 93 runs of 103 balls, studded with seven boundaries and two sixes.

Pargat Singh was the other noticeable batsman who chipped in 40 runs of 44 balls, hitting five boundaries and one six. For Chandigarh, Gurinder Singh took 3 wickets for 22 runs, while Amit Uniyal and Siddharth Kaul took two wickets each.

In reply, the local team chased down the target in 36.5 overs with opener Sarul Kanwar (62 runs of 60 balls) and Amit Prashar (50 runs of 55 balls) scoring for the team. Bipul Sharma scored an unbeaten quick fire 51 of 36 deliveries, with 8 boundaries.

The Ludhiana team, after winning the toss, was bowled out for 227 in 48.4 overs. Chintan Sehgal and Nitin Goel put on 87 runs for the opening wicket in 20 overs before Chintan Sehgal was caught by Bir Kanwar off Varun for 38 runs (of 68 balls) studded with 3 boundaries.

Nitin Goel and Karan Goel stabled the team’s innings with a 52-runs partnership. In reply, Mohali scored 228 for 5 in 38 overs. Harpreet Singh Munder (40), Sachin Sohal (41) and Harpreet Sunny(39) were the main scorers for the team.

In the three-match series between DP Azad Cricket Academy (blue) and DP Azad Cricket Academy (red), the red oufits defeated their counterparts, here today.

Batting first, the blue team managed to score 180 runs for 7 in 40 overs. Paras Rishi played an unbeaten knock of 109 of 95 balls and remained unbeaten throughout the team’s innings. He was equally supported by Arjun Aggarwal who scored 45 of 54 balls. For the bowling side, Parth and Nipun took two wickets each.

In reply, the winning team chased the target with two overs to spare. Rohan (40),Ayudh (28), and Amul (24) took the team to victory while for the red team Anshul, Arjun and Sonu took two wickets each.
