Dogs’ day out
This one goes out to all the pet lovers and their pets. While some of us desperately want to be indoors eating hot pasta and sipping cappuccino on a cold Sunday afternoon, an appreciable number of people gather at leisure valley sector-10 to admire all kinds of canines at the Dog Show organised by Chandigarh Kennel Club. And now for the small, big, tall, hound like dogs sitting ‘easy’ next to their masters. As a dog lover you don’t like the sight of the tiny puppies behind cages (not to mention they are looked after well), but all you can do is stop and give a nice pat to them, as they cuddle up under the sheets.
The second day of Chandigarh Dog Show 2012 saw the breed, Labrador exceed over the others. White and black Labrador pups were all over the place. It was their get together, while some liked the attention, others couldn’t care less. Moving around the venue, bumping into a dog lover curiously moving around with their own pet is common. What is uncommon is when you see a large group of people gathered at a spot.
It is a duty to take a peek a boo! What is this, a hound probably strayed from the hills. This is a Himalayan Sheep dog (Tibetian Mastiff), a huge dog sitting like a small pup, loving all the attention. At The Dog Show this time, the ‘big’ dogs made for quiet a view. Brown and black coloured Tibetian Mastiff, Rottweiler, Great Dane, the feared yet loveable breeds had people excitedly busy (clicking pictures and posing with them). It wasn’t a big thing, until we hit the stall that had an even bigger crowd gathered. A majestic dog, we call it Newfoundland was walking like a lion, and yes posing for those who could dare to go near it.
The Newfoundland is a breed of large dogs, known for their giant size, tremendous strength, calm disposition and loyalty. Bhupinder Singh from Khanna owns them, and he takes pride in showing them. Before we share how high maintenance they are, it is mandatory to tell you what the Newfoundland pups cost- Rs 1 lakh to more! This is the price for loyalty or passion to own a canine like this, we leave that to you. American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel, Pugs, Boxer, the oh so sweet Snowball, it was a dogs day out, and you bet they were loving it. Harbir Gill had come from Ludhiana with brown coloured Great Daine’s. The canines behaved well, as Harbir shared how his pets know they are being taken out for the Dog Show. "It is always a good event to check new breeds of dogs, interact with other dog breeders. The only things that I noticed this time is that it looks more like a selling ground for dogs, rather than an event for displaying the pets." It sure looked like a strike-the-best-deal place for once, as women (for sure pet lovers) bargained (as a habit and practise) with the dog owners who had reserved the pets on sale. As Louis Sabin, a published author of childrens books puts it, the dogs, they don’t care if you’re rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He doesn’t care if you’re not smart, not popular, not a good joke-teller, not the best athlete, nor the best-looking person. To your dog, you are the greatest, the smartest, the nicest human being who was ever born. You are his friend and protector. jasmine@tribunemail.com

The game
is on...
How about a bid to escape avalanches, rock slides and freezing cold temperatures as you take mother nature head-on in the hope of surviving some of the most dangerous descents on earth? Many of us might leap up at the opportunity to conquer the treacherous mountains if worldly obligations (read job, family) were taken care of.
But then, there will always be people who precisely know the ‘demand’ and will find ‘ways’ to fulfill. Upcoming games by Electronic Arts (EA) will provide real life experience of popular sports simulated down to the T. FIFA Street, Grand Slam Tennis 2 and SSX are the games which will be launched in the coming months that feature the popular sports icons. Heroes whether from sports or screen have always inspired games. Right from the 90s, if American professional skaters Tony Hawks’ skateboarding game got popular, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, a series of video games, wooed the golf lovers virtually. Spider Man and X Men games developed by Marvel to the Barbie ones, virtual gaming boasts of all that real life offers. But then, there is an ever-increasing demand for more. Surabhi Sharma, a final year BCA student from Mohali is keen on football in any form. “World Cup comes every four years. Watching matches on TV push adrenaline rush, I am sure a game simulating the real FIFA would be exciting till the big game is back.” Ludhiana’s Fateh Veer Singh Guram, Age 16 and an avid gamer is excited at ESPN Grand Slam Classics. “I have watched tennis many times and I know I will never get a chance to meet Federer or Nadal ……… playing in that virtual kind of environment will be really cool and give me a glimpse of these great players’ signature shots,” he says. The recent games from Milestone, a company into simulating real sports events, bring on the fun not only in case of football and tennis, but also mountaineering. Says Jayont R Sharma, CEO, Milestone Interactive Group, the distributors of EA Sports Games in India: “EA sports is the market leader in sports based video and PC games that are popular worldwide and have a large audience appeal. FIFA game franchise is also one of the most popular lifestyle games in India after Cricket. These games are followed by Tennis, which is the third most popular game and is represented by the Grand Slam Tennis franchise. Extreme sport as a genre is slowly gaining popularity in the country via games like FIFA Street and SSX. EA Sports games offer real life experience and are the most authentic games ever made. Gamers in India have always been fond of sports and racing games and we see solid demand and continued excitement for these titles among the Indian consumer.” mona@tribunemail.com

TV starts talking
Remote controls could soon become outdated with the advent of new generation gesture and voice-controlled televisions, tech observers say. The new technology allows viewers to control a new line of TV sets simply by speaking or gesturing at them, eliminating the need for clunky pointing devices and opening up a range of new ways people can use and interact with their televisions.
At a Consumer Electronics Show last week in Las Vegas, a young lady gave a demonstration of the company’s new line of Smart TV sets, which come with a built-in Web browser as well as online applications such as Netflix, Skype and Facebook. “Hi TV,” she said, issuing the verbal command for the TV to turn on. “Channel 1034.” The TV switched to a news channel. “Web browser,” she continued, and the Yahoo home page popped up. Tech observers have asserted that gesture and voice recognition systems will grow more refined as the computers embedded in smartphones, TVs, tablets and home appliances become more powerful. That will bring to end an era of mice and remote controls, which started in 1950 with Zenith’s “Lazy Bones,” a remote connected to the TV through a long wire. —ANI

Majestic malts
One of the few reasons why the crème de la crème of Chandigarh gather together is to feel the comfort in the lap of anything luxurious. This time it was a tasting session of the most exotic Single Malts. Brought in city by the UB Group, the exclusive Single Malt Club of Chandigarh gathered at the Smoke House Grill to welcome their latest muse with pure bliss. Apart from the drinks, the evening was laced with as much information to convert even a non follower into an ardent fan.
Sharing details of the Malts brought together, Rohan Jelkie, a wine and spirit consultant with Tuleeho spoke at length about everything Malt is related to. "Best Scotch in the world is made from 100 per cent barley and made in a single distil," he says. As the conversation moved towards the in-depth discussion on the process of making, distilling and evaporating the Malt, the winter chill enveloped the venue. "There is no doubt that the style of malt depends on the season, the heavier and the smokier malts are for the winters, where as the lighter and the more palpable ones for the summer," Rahul shares, holding up a Zura 10. Meant for the elite crowds, the gathering was limited only to the Single Malt fans of Chandigarh. Here to demystify the myths of the Malts, Rahul continues, "Zuras come from different parts of Scotland and different ages," he says, nosing his deep golden coloured Zura 10. Also, open to experimenting, the different types were mixed to bring a true flavour in front. What follows are Zura 16, Zura Superstition, Zura 16 and Dalmore. Describing about the sinful Jura superstition, Rahul held up the amber coloured drink pointing out to the slight smokiness. "It s apparent that the bouquet is not as pronounced as in the Zura 10," he says. As the chit chat among the finest grew the Malts began settling in to make way for a great evening. Hope the bubbly is not feeling out. vasudha@tribunemail.com

Presentation concerns
Researchers have confirmed what many people have long suspected -- mouthwatering images of food in advertisements is fuelling obesity epidemic. In fact, the effect of the hormones is so powerful that a photograph can make you want to eat a slice of cake just two hours after breakfast, says the study. The researchers suggest that people trying to shed the flab should avoid looking at pictures of tempting food. They have based their findings after conducting an experiment where they monitored the reaction of healthy men to images of food. The subjects were shown pictures of appetising food while having their hormone levels measured. The findings revealed that levels of ghrelin increased when the men were shown the food pictures. Lead researcher Petra Schussler said: "The findings of our study demonstrate, for the first time, that the release of ghrelin into the blood for the regulation of food consumption is also controlled by external factors. "Our brain thereby processes these visual stimuli, and the physical processes that control our perception of appetite are triggered involuntarily. This mechanism could prompt us to eat a piece of cake just two hours after breakfast. "We recommend that, where possible, individuals with weight problems should preferably avoid looking at images of appetising food." Co-author Axel Steiger said that the pervasive presence of appetising food in the media could contribute to weight increase in people. — PTI

Stress buster
We have winter in full swing, cold air whipping our cheeks and our layers of woollens always increasing. Yet once the sun is up there we remove these layers and soak in the warmth and the vitamin D.
Stress builds up when we have to change our everyday habits and adjust with all kinds of climatic changes. Here in India where we know we live in different climatic seasons in different parts of our country, our bodies and most specially our skin goes through a specially stressful period. Most of us don't even notice it yet all weather conditions leave a serious impact on our thinking process which in turn changes our mind and body's state too. Skin responds in its own way to this environmental stress and it is up to us to help ourselves maintain a healthy and glowing skin and save it from the stressful changes that are happening around. Keeping our inner selves aligned with the outer environs is what makes us balanced human beings in a constant state of perfect health and therefore we must keep our selves alive and rejuvenated. A regular inner and outer balance in our daily regimen will keep our skin stress free and glowing. So just go for a few sensible ordinary rituals. Watch what you eat Eating lots of fruits and vegetables will keep your system cleansed, your mind stress free and your system eased naturally. A fresh mind contributes to a healthy skin. Drink loads of water Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day and trust me it does wonders for your skin. It flushes out the toxins and keeps your body in a natural state of mind body health. Think positive Make being positive your life mantra. Thinking positive always keeps your mind secreting certain hormones which rejuvenate mind body and soul and definitely make you look younger. Discipline yourself Putting yourself into a routine always gets the stress bug away from you as you don't have to worry about what you will do next. Being casual sometimes can be very stressful in itself. As we allow the winter months to go along for us to be gearing up for a new look can be a real way to beat winter stress. We must make stress be constantly on the run to give us that constant state of exhilaration. Make up and clothes can go a long way to change our stressed feelings but the real thing is the glow from within. Make sure you have adequate ways of doing so. Practice yoga As numerous studies have shown Yoga takes years away from your face the natural way. The effects of Yoga on your skin are long lasting. Gives a natural face lift by reducing wrinkles. Gives a natural healthy glow by balancing the hormones and increasing circulation. Keeps the skin rejuvenated while preventing dryness or sagging. Helps secrete certain oils Delays process of greying of hair by increasing blood supply to hair follicle. There are many asanas like Sarvanga asana Poorna Halaasan, Shirshasana, Matsayasana which keep us in great health by increasing blood circulation and making us feel and look years younger. Above all else it is a stress free lifestyle which promotes younger looking skin. Tension to a large extent contributes to us looking and feeling way beyond our years. Any which way one can adopt in order to remain calm and centred is increasingly recommended for a way to good skin. So many products in the market are there which give you slogans for beautiful skins, youthful looks great bodies. I am not denying that the cosmetics and products don't work but the calm and youthful resonance achieved through a stress free life is the most charming and attractive/ Do try to use all routines heading towards a stress free existence and get ready to accept the new and beautiful you! Soup-er soul warmer
Kandla Nijhowne Winter's onslaught is on, full pelt and mufflers, blowers and log fires are our 'hot' favourites! There' no better soul warmer than curling up with a bowl of soup on a cold winter evening. The earliest evidence of our ancestors eating soup? About 6000 BC! And guess what it was made from? Hippopotamus! We have a preconceived notion that soups are alien to our cuisine, forgetting the ever popular Mughlai shorba and the Tamil Mulligatawny! The latter translated literally from Tamil's Milagu Thanni means "pepper water". Mulligatawny is a complex soup, delightful in its flavours and aroma, and definitely worth a try! Just a reel role
George Clooney has revealed that he couldn't relate to his character in The Descendants but doesn't think that impacted on his performance. The 50-year-old actor plays Matt King, a wealthy man who sets out with his two daughters to find the lover of his ailing wife in the drama and though he had little in common with the character, he doesn't think that is important.
"This guy is really going through a phase in his life where he wants to do right to everyone, and I don't know if that would be part of my make-up. He's caught up in a strange place in his life and career," said he. "I enjoyed playing the character but I don't know if I can relate to him. But part of my job is to do what is asked of me in the script and not have to worry about whether it pertains to me or not," he said. "You don't have to actually shoot heroin to play a drug addict, you know." George also admitted he fears repeating the same career choices and would regard not varying his decisions as a professional "failure". — ANI

Ash is loving motherhood
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is enjoying motherhood completely. She is in no rush to lose weight or return to films. A source tells us, “Beti B is two months old now. Aishwarya is completely enjoying doting on her, as is the family. They have other commitments but she is dedicated to her daughter. She has been offered films and scripts but she is in no rush to do them. Films come and go but she has become a mother for the first time. She has made it clear that nothing is more important to her than her family. Her inspiration is also her mom-in-law Jaya Bachchan who left films to care for Shweta and Abhishek as they were growing up.” The source continues, “Among all the actresses who are delaying their marriages and motherhood, Ash stands in her own league. Not only was she the only super-busy working actress well into her 30s, she is still much sought-after. Filmmakers are giving her scripts with hubby Abhishek but she has turned them down. She might do her best buddy Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film whenever it happens. They both trust each other completely. He might make other films but he always has special projects for Ash. Abhishek isn’t pressurising her to look after the baby. It is completely her choice and her family members are completely fine with it. Ash knows her priorities very well.”

Keen project for Bips
It is rare for established actors to chase scripts, but Bipasha Basu did just that for her forthcoming film Jodi Breakers, in which she is in a unique pairing with R. Madhavan.
“This (Jodi Breakers) is a very interesting film and there is a story to it. Two years back I had read a very interesting script and then I got busy. This was the script that I had read. Two years later I woke up one afternoon and I called my manager to ask that where is that script? So, we traced the script. This is the first time that I ever got to chase a script,” Bipasha said here at an event. After featuring in over 40 films in her showbiz career of over a decade, what made the dusky beauty run after the script? “My character Sonali is such a refreshing character. I have not done a role like this in 10 years and thankfully I chased it and I got it. I knew Maddy was playing the male’s role and we had so much fun,” said the actress, who was last seen flaunting her perfect figure in Players. Jodi Breakers, directed by Ashwini Chaudhary, is slated to release on February 24.

Second time lucky
Deepshika Nagpal, popularly known for her role in the show Son Pari, married her long time boyfriend Kaishav Arora recently and is on cloud nine. The duo fell in love while doing a film and soon decided to tie the knot. Second time round, Deepshika says she has found a guy who completes her. Has the feeling of marriage sunk in? Not yet. Everyone keeps asking me how does it feel to be married? It feels great but I am also tired. I had the wedding functions spread over five days with Mata Ki chowki, mehendi, sangeet and engagement ceremony, wedding and reception. During the functions, we were both worried and looking after things as we wanted everything to go off smoothly. Now that we are married, we are just settling in and reliving moments. His friends call me bhabhi but I haven’t gotten used to that yet. Which was the best moment during the wedding? There are many, like my kids performing on stage during sangeet, and Danny Denzongpa and Ranjeetji- two villains of film industry came to give their greetings on the stage. It is a big deal for me that they were there for me but it was more surprising for people who saw them. I will never forget these beautiful moments in my life. Where are you going for your honeymoon? There are no fixed plans yet. As Kaishav is from Indore, we will go to Indore for a function and we plan to go to either Mauritius or Koh Samui in first week of February. What qualities do you like in Kaishav? He is a responsible person with maturity. His family is wonderful too. God gave me everything but Kaishav completes me. Why would you advocate marriage? Marriage is a beautiful institution but make sure to choose the right partner. Do not go for it under peer or family pressure. No one is perfect but if you accept someone with your heart, nothing will go wrong. — HRM
