Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 10
Taking cognisance of a complaint filed by Tanu Bedi on the mismanagement of the Sector-15 old age home, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today put the UT Administration on notice.

In the complaint, she stated that the inmates of the state-run old age home were facing harassment at the hands of its manager.

She stated that woollens were distributed among them, but the manager snatched those.

She was told that this was not the first time such an incident took place. She was told that the inmates had to pay Rs 16 a day to go out.

They complained about the non-availability of medicines. She found two old women lying on the floor and their rooms stinking.

Shelter homes were meant for the destitute, but officials deputed there dictated terms and behaved as if they were offering big favours to inmates, she added.

Taking cognisance of the complaint, Justice Surya Kant referred it to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

“The contents of the complaint speak for themselves about the plight of the hapless residents of the old-age home run by the Chandigarh Administration,” observed Justice Surya Kant, who further recommended the matter to be taken on the judicial side.

As the case came up for hearing, a Bench comprising Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover issued notice to the Administration for January 17.
