SWITCHING ROLES
Glamour world brings name, fame as well as the riches, but it is physically and mentally draining, says model- turned-anchor Natasha Suri
Mona

Reality bytes: Natasha Suri Photo: Pradeep Tewari A cheerful, bubbly girl with a 1000-watt smile, Natasha Suri's enthusiasm for life is infectious. Former Miss India (2006), Natasha was in Chandigarh on Friday to promote the latest show Big Switch 3 that she's anchoring.

Happy in her 'reality' show world that Natasha has embraced post her title and modelling assignments, she says, "I dreamt of being Miss India when I was 13. I am thankful to God to have realised that. After that whatever fortune that's landed at my door is a bonus and each day a blessing."

So how 'real' is the reality world on TV? "Pretty much! The situations are contrived but apart from that how a contestant behaves is entirely up to him and her," says Natasha.

Yet, how much of it is scripted? "Well, seeing people behave violently onscreen might make a viewer think that they are paid to do so. But, in my experience I have seen that it's not really the director or the producer who forces that but the contestant themselves either show their true colours or do that intentionally to get more footage," says Natasha, who gently steers the conversation towards Big Switch 3.

"The latest season of the show is not only an entertainer but also a show that has brought transformation in the lives of some rich youngsters," says the host.

The show has picked up eight brats from across the nation (including city's own Rohit Bajaj), stripped them from the luxuries that life offers and made them earn their living.

"It's been really a life changing experience for some. So far these rich kids had no clue of what it takes to earn money and the comforts it buys," says Natasha.

She talks of many incidents from the show that made contestants break down and realise the value of money and the need to respect others.

"There was this brat who worked as a courier guy and got the door slammed way too many times on his face. The only time when a person offered him a glass of water touched him so much he vowed to reciprocate the gesture in times to come."

Natasha has never been a brat but a hard worker through and through. "God has scripted my life well. I belong to a middle class family. I have passed through challenging times and tackled them positively. It was post Miss India title that I got money and fame. By then I was mature enough to handle it well."

More than herself, it's Rohit Shetty who plays 'Godfather' on the show that Natasha considers a better role model.

"His is a true rag to riches story. The man deserves every bit of the success that he has," says Natasha who desires nothing more but to continue making her mum proud!

Going Gaga

There are few stars who inspire the way Lady Gaga does. I was fortunate to have interviewed her at India's first F1 race. Her answers to life reflect how grounded and spiritual she is despite her biggest pop star status!

Natasha Suri

Hourglass figure

Natasha Suri with her hourglass figure (she stands 5'8" with 36-23-37 and weighing 52 kg) is surely a fitness idol. How does she maintain her body? "Well, I am paid for that," she flashes her stunning smile. "See, I don't eat rice and I do not have not a sweet tooth. That takes care of half of the things, for the rest I walk. I don't do gymming. The only time I hit the gym was for the Miss World pageant."

She tips the wannabe Miss Indias:

  • Eat every two hours.
  • No aerated drinks with meals.
  • Warm water followed by every meal.
  • Avoid 'nonsense' (read potatoes, fried) eating.
  • Eat nothing after eight in the night.
  • Walk a lot.

Sizzling hot!
Goan singer Edwin D'Costa adds pizzazz to the sizzler festival at Toy Hotel
Sabia Talwar

Edwin D'Costa Photo: Pradeep Tewari Chandigarh has definitely become experimental! Along with a sizzler festival The Toy Hotel-34 has roped in Edwin D'Costa, a Goan singer, to pep-up the weekend mood.

It's Edwin's first visit to Chandigarh and he is pretty much enjoying the city and the food here.

Says Edwin, "I'm impressed with the city and I feel proud to promote the Konkani language through my songs wherever I go."

He gives us a demonstration, sending us all into a foot-tapping frenzy with a Konkani song and the melody that he creates with the keyboard.

So, how long has he been singing?

"Since I was a child. My grandmother and my mother used to sing, so my talent is hereditary. I'm a versatile singer and can sing in Konkani, English, Hindi and Punjabi."

He proves his point by singing Ra.One's Dildaara and Rabbi Shergill's Bulla Ki Jana Main Kaun.

He adds, "Music is my passion and I love playing for audiences so I started playing for my uncle's band, Imaginations, in the early 1990s. They used to call me Bryan Adams, because of my powerful and husky voice."

And for him, music is not just food for soul but a need for day to day life too.

"I think even while having food, you need a good ambience and music makes you enjoy your food even more." Edwin has composed 16 original Hindi songs.

"I want to experience and explore before doing an album. Right now I enjoy singing live throughout the country. Hopefully I will go abroad for the same," he says.

Edwin composes his music, writes his lyrics and then keeps practicing them for perfection.

"My mom is my true inspiration. I also follow Bryan Adam's songs especially his song Everything I do, I do it for you and who does not like Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi."

The Kolaveri Di finds a mention here too. Says Edwin, "I myself think that the song is very cute, though I can't understand much of it. But then that's what music is all about, the beats are to be enjoyed and there has to be a connect."

Edwin stared with playing a guitar and has mastered the keyboard.

What about playback singing? "I'm young and want to build up my contacts. Performing live is helping me become a seasoned singer," comes the reply.

Edwin's father insisted that he better have an all-round development and pushed him into joining the Army as a musician in 1996. "I was a soldier in the Karnataka Bligam base camp and was part of the band Yash. I then went to the Middle-East and joined the catering business," adds Edwin.

Edwin's music can be enjoyed at The Toy Hotel along with an exotic variety of piping hot combinations of sizzlers. There is the grilled chicken sausage sizzler which is served with mushroom sauce, the braised lamb leg made with exotic vegetables and deviola sauce, the tagletilli pasta with mushroom which is tossed in olive oil and served with mushroom ragout, the crespelle primavera and many more. Well, with this music and food combination, the winter chill will certainly become bearable!

Fair web
Now, a social network only for women

A 30-year-old Canadian woman has come up with a social networking website exclusively for females.

The site Luluvise.com bans males from joining.

It connects though other networking websites LinkedIn and Facebook. Since its launch Wednesday, it already has 1,000 users in 69 countries.

"Luluvise uses Facebook to make registration easier. We do not post to walls or make Luluvise information public anywhere or to other Facebook users," creator Alexandra Chong was quoted as saying.

More than 500 men submitted their emails to get access to the site, but instead received an email reading: "Hey Dude, you're a dude."

The daily, however, said it was relatively easy for men to get around the ban. All they need to do is set up a fake Facebook profile as a woman, and make friends with themselves on that social network. — IANS

Tough call

Actor Shiney Ahuja, whose career received a body blow after he was accused of raping his maid, says that he is sceptical about filmmakers approaching him for their projects.

“Initially... I couldn’t explain or express my reaction. More than my reaction I was just praying to God that does not come in print tomorrow. If it comes in print, I thought I would get up early... my 60-year-old dad goes for walk. If he reads it I don’t know how much more he could take. I was very very worried about him,” Shiney said.

“But then I realised that may be in the past two years several things have been written about me to which I have said that I have not done... news comes in and so does the apology, but then the damage is done,” he said.

“When time is not good then there is nothing one can do.I cannot blame one person or community or family... they have gone through a lot. When things are like that one cannot do anything,” Shiney said. Shiney, who made a name for himself in B-town with films like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Gangster, was sentenced to seven years in prison by a Mumbai fast track court for raping his maid in 2009. The actor is currently out on bail after he challenged the sentence in the Bombay High Court.

He is now making a comeback in Bollywood with Bharat Shah’s horror film Ghost after a gap of three years.

On whether he would be able to score again with film-makers Shiney told in an interview, “I don’t know if anybody will call me... may be somebody will. I am waiting for the film to release. I would approach people whom I am in touch with like Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Basu and few others and love to work with them.” “From the industry everybody I have worked with, like Anurag, Sudhir and now Bharat Shah have stood by me. I don’t know what would have happened if I did not have this film,” he said.

Ghost would see the 37-year-old actor share screen space with actress Sayali Bhagat. The film made by producer-turned director Puja Jatinder Bedi.

There were reports stating that even director Puja and co-actress Sayali made allegations of sexual harassment against Shiney. However, Sayali later clarified that nothing of that sort happened. — PTI

No bikini for Simran!

Life’s good: Simran Kaur MundiSimran Kaur Mundi makes her debut in Jo Hum Chahein opposite Sunny Gill. She talks about her journey with this film.

Audition

Actually I was the first girl they wanted to audition and I turned out to be the last. They called me when I was in London as I was planning to move base there. I came back and auditioned and they cast me in the movie.

Character

The character Neha Kapoor comes to Mumbai to become an actress. Both of us are similar as we are level-headed, grounded, focused, and determined, and we believe in serious relationships. The difference is that I have not gone through the emotional journey which Neha goes through in the film.

Film industry

I think it is a good time to be in the film industry because audiences are now open to complete and different cinematic experiences. Jo Hum Chahein is a complete commercial entertainer which has all the elements such as drama, romance, comedy, etc.

Preparation

I did a month-long workshop with Sunny Gill, my co-star and we really got to know each other and get comfortable. I learnt to get over my inhibitions and how to use the memories of my life to act in scenes. I think we are all actors as we do act or pretend at different times in our lives.

Reservations

I have an intimate scene in Jo Hum Chahein and when I did it, I was single. I will not be comfortable doing an intimate scene now. That was the first and last for me. I wore a bikini during my Miss India time and that is it. I have never worn a bikini ever. — HRM

Karisma-tic world

Happy Mum: Karisma KapurKarisma Kapur is thoroughly enjoying being the mother of 6-year-old Samaira and 18-month-old Kiaan Raj. She talks about motherhood, films, family, and more.

Darling daughter

Samaira is a very responsible elder sister. She is not interested in Bollywood films at the moment. I would love it if she becomes an actress if she decides later on. Ditto for Kiaan! Samaira didn’t know why my mom, her masi, and I are always chased for photographs and autographs. She thought it happened with everybody. I explained to her that we are a family of actors and that people like us are sought after and there is nothing to worry about.

Aunt Kareena

Kareena is a very nice masi to my children and she adores them. She has learnt about parenting from my experience and I am sure she will make a great mother when she has her own children.

Playing mom

I wanted four children when I was a teenager but I am happy with two as of now. I didn’t know I could be so loving and so self-sacrificing. I have realised how maternal I am. You cannot learn to be a mother, you just learn on the job. Every mother is different and every mother is the best.

Career call

I got many offers earlier but I turned them down to raise my children. Now, they have grown up a little so I have time to do films.

Simple steps

Model-turned-actor Karan Tacker is one of the cute faces on television. However, he doesn't workout as much as his colleagues do. He goes to the gym about thrice a week and follows a healthy diet. Karan reveals his fitness mantra…

What is your fitness regime?

My fitness regime is pretty simple because I barely get time to work out. I have good eating habits. I eat healthy to stay healthy. I avoid fatty and oily food. I go to the gym at least 2-3 times a week.

What do you think of TV actors and their fitness level?

Many of them are very conscious about their looks and health which is very good. We have a lot of fit people in the industry now. Karan Singh Grover and Gaurav Khanna are two names that stand out. Among girls, I know Dhrasti Dhami works out. She's really beautiful and fit. My costars Krystle D'Souza and Nia Sharma are very conscious about what they eat. Both eat salads on the sets and avoid unhealthy food.

Is it tough being an actor, working and maintaining a healthy body?

Definitely. I leave home at eight in the morning and come back by 10:30 pm. I work for 16 hours. After working for that long, I don't think anybody would have the energy to go to a gym. You have to be really focused to get that drive and maintain a balance.

Which is more compromised - eating habits or working out?

Of course, eating habits. As I told you, I work for 16 hours which makes it really difficult for me. Be it breakfast, snacks or lunch, I pack all my food from home and don't order anything on the sets.

Since when have you been working out?

I have been working out even before I got into television. I was into sports. My body type is more athletic than muscular.

Do you love going to the gym or are happier to do yoga, aerobics or other exercises?

I am not a yoga person. I don't really do yoga. Neither aerobics. Although, I do like to go for a walk or run. I do a lot of free-hand exercises like push-ups and all.

What are your dos and don'ts?

I don't have any dos or don'ts as such. I just listen to my body and do what it tells me to do. I eat healthy and do normal workout. I really enjoy weight training at the gym.

We Hate Such Stories

These movies could have been good but they were not.

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

Katrina was over expressive and the movie was plain noisy with mostly stretched situations and noisy music.

Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji

Ajay, Emraan, and Omi Vaidya! It is hard to imagine them as men to die for. We didn’t fall for Madhur Bhandarkar’s tacky rom-com.

Game

Abhishek Bachchan doesn’t impress or sell! Game was all gloss and no substance. Farhan’s corny lines were surprising.

Hum Tum Aur Shabana

Tusshar and Shreyas do not work unless they are in Golmaal. You hardly care which girl they like. Sagar Bellary’s film was very outdated and could make you deaf by the end of it.

Rascals

This is David Dhawan at his worst. Nobody acted in the movie and Kangna just flaunted her newly acquired hot bod and acted dumb! What was Sanjay Dutt thinking?

Desi Boyz

Only Akshay acted in this movie. John, Deepika, and Chitrangda were show pieces. It is called the best of the worst. The music was all copied from other songs.

Thank You

Anees Bazmee. We wonder why Anees Bazmee is paid to direct movies! The music was bad and the film was chauvinistic. What was Irrfan Khan doing in this?

You have never seen a mission more intense than this.

Best mission

The movie has a lot of style and action which provides enough entertainment. It is the best Mission Impossible of the series till now.

It is genuinely thrilling and is consistently entertaining. Given Tom Cruise's age, he is in spectacular shape and has acted very well.

Starring: Sunny Gill, Simran Mundi, Alley Khan, Achint Kaur, Yuri Suri, Samar Virmani and Mansi Multani.

Sleeping pill

It is a youthful love story and the star cast, Sunny Gill and Simran Mundi, brings freshness to the movie. But the story puts you to sleep.

Dev Kakkar, salesman, Samsung

Saving grace

Aaj Bhi Party song is the only good thing in the movie. Wonder when Bollywood would move away from the romantic plot.

Not worth it

Go watch Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl which is much better than this one. It is just waste of time and money.

Popular Snigdha

Snigdha Pandey, aka Rama Bhabhi from Navya, is thrilled to know that the audiences love her in the show. She plays a manipulative and cunning woman and the grey shades have worked for her. The trio has a blast joking and laughing when not shooting. Guess she is popular on and off screen.
