All in one go!
Multi-tasking is an integral part of our lives today, but strangely women who multi-task more do not enjoy it
Mona

Writing an email when answering a phone call and at the same time trying to have breakfast or steering the wheel in a crowed street — multi-tasking in today’s world is a given for most of us.

‘There is time enough for everything in the course of the day if you do but one thing at once, but there is not time enough in the year, if you will do two things at a time,” advised Lord Chesterfield years back. But gone are those times and rules that dictated life!

In the rush of life when deadlines loom large, competition forces one to work on several fronts simultaneously and social media demands your attention at each minute of the day, so one has little choice but to multitask.

“Where is the option?” questions Dipin Dingra, operational manager, Dell, Authorised Service Centres. “The minimum working hours today are nine, which take up most of the day — when does one finish other chores if not while working?” asks Dipin who makes almost all his payments online, as there is hardly any time to go out and pay the bills. While talking over the phone, official chat and writing emails happen simultaneously, but Dipin agrees that each thing is not done efficiently. “In case we do one thing at a time, we will need 99 hours in a day! Today is the time to adapt to circumstances; move to faster options to live the day,” says Dipin, who has moved to snap deals online because he has no time to go shopping.

When it comes to multi-tasking, it’s more a prerogative of women. However, when we talked to women, strangely they seem to like doing one thing at a time. “I believe in finishing one task before taking up another,” says Sandhya Shrivastava, an artiste, mother, homemaker, professional, all rolled into one. “I have learnt it the hard way. Doing two things at a time generally spoils one if not two,” says Sandhya, who switched off the gas in order to take our call. How does she manage her time then? “It is comprehensive time-planning. Each minute of the day is accounted for. If on a day I take it easy and wake up 15 minutes late, the repercussions carry on till the night,” says Sandhya.

Sukhmanreet Mangat, teacher at Vivek, Mohali, is another one who likes to do one task at a time, “Doing many things at one time certainly impacts one’s performance.” Not only does Sukhmanreet pursue one task at a time, she also ensures occasional breaks. “With the amount of stuff our mind is bombarded with, it’s imperative to take time off to be able to think clearly and coherently,” she adds.

However, there are many who complain of having no option but to multi-task. “Well, this is the need of the hour. One constantly needs to improve one’s skills,” says Rajesh Chadha, a trainer in strategic planning, soft skills and leadership management. “Multi-tasking comes with experience. If you want it in lesser time, training is the solution,” says Rajesh.

A recent study published in American Sociological Review journal brings out the gender differences regarding multi-tasking, “Working mothers are doing two activities at once more than two-fifths of the time they are awake, while working fathers are multi-tasking more than a third of their waking hours.”

The research also points out that multi-tasking is more stressful for women - “Only women reported negative emotions when they multi-tasked at home or in public, while men found it a positive experience.” One task at a time or many, the choice is entirely yours!

Cut to weddings

Veena Malik
Will Veena smooch?  Controversy and Veena Malik are never far-away. After the nude cover of FHM controversy, now Pak bomb Veena Malik is looking forward to Imagine’s upcoming reality show Swayamvar Season 4 Veena Ka Vivaah. After two failed relationships and a broken engagement, she hopes to get her guy on the show. Moreover, she was quoted saying she will even smooch the contestants on the show- if required!!

Weddings continue to bring together friends and family. It is mostly during the wedding season that the fashion scene in Chandigarh picks up, as brides go for over-the-top concepts, styles and cuts to ensure it is the best look they put together for their D-Day. This is one of the reasons why Gunjan Nagpal from Aura has decided to showcase her collection for the family of the bride!

A part of the Chandigarh Fashion Couture Show, the focus will be on Indian semi-formals. Talking about her collection, she says, “This is technically the last collection designers do for the brides. My focus is to offer something for the family and give them the right importance too,” she smiles.

In the industry since 2009, Gunjan’s fashion studio boasts of a variety of colours, concepts, cuts, styles and embellishments. “Today’s generation is earning and wants viability for their money. The young girls, due to the exposure they get, are focused on bringing value for money,” she says. For her collection to be showcased tomorrow, she has converted a gown into an Anarkali. “It has 35 metres of fabric. Also, another style that has become hugely popular today is the lehnga sari,” she says. Drape it like a lengha for a close friend’s wedding and like a sari for a colleague’s reception. “This option is great for those who don’t want to repeat their outfit,” she adds.

Punjab is the land of vibrancy; from food to clothes — everything has the element of colour in it. Talking about the options of colours for weddings, Gunjan suggests blues, pinks, and yellows. “A lot of young brides are opting for a three-coloured lehnga, where the choli, the skirt and the duppata is a combination of colours,” she informs us. Working extensively with appliqué, zardozi and swarovski, she does not reject the use of red. “It will always remain a true blue bridal colour,” she smiles.

If there is a hint of modernity, traditions do not remain far behind. Jewellery still revolves around kundan and polki sets. “It is amazing to find the young blood so aware of where they are putting their money. No doubt white gold looks better, but gold surpasses everything,” she says. Mostly in weddings, the male fraternity tends to feel a bit left out. “Yes, I have several brides coming and asking for colour-coordinated outfits. The best option for that remains Delhi,” she says.

Also the collection to be showcased at Tao tomorrow will include Neelam Gupta’s Khadi collection from her brand Shokh and Indian wear by Neharika. In this wedding season, as the bride is going all the way to Kolkata for her outfits, why should you be left behind? Go on, play with colours!

Bride & beautiful
After Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan and Ratan Rajput, it is Veena Malik who is set to find the man of her dreams through Swyamwar Season 4. We ask Veena how she is feeling about the whole idea…
Sabia Talwar

Veena Malik, the sensuous Pakistani actor, has been in the news quite on and off. She grabbed the headlines when she was a contestant in the Bigg Boss Season 4 because of her closeness with actor Ashmit Patel; then she became a vegetarian for the PETA campaign and recently posed nude for the FHM men’s magazine. Phew! Being in India has been a roller-coaster ride for Veena.

Veena has been shuttling between Pakistan, Dubai and Mumbai and is in the limelight again — she will be the would-be bride in the upcoming Swayamwar Season 4 Veena ka Vivaah.

Says Veena Malik, “The love of India keeps bringing me back and to Mumbai. As of now I’m really excited about my Swayamwar, as there will be entries open to guys from all over the world.”

She adds, “Finally seventeen contestants will be short-listed and again three of them will reach the finals. The one who wins will be my prince charming, who I think will be the most compatible with me; I will surely marry him.”

Veena has been into acting since she was fourteen-years old; she started modelling and acting back in her home country.

And how was her experience inside the Bigg Boss house? “It was awesome and I thank Bigg Boss as he introduced me to India, and also for giving me a friend like Ashmit. I did not take part in Bigg Boss with an aim of getting an entry into Bollywood. ”

So if she is that close to Ashmit why doesn’t she marry him? “We like each other very much, but you can’t marry anyone and everyone who is close to you. At the end, you have to marry one person,” quips Veena.

She is also busy with her Bollywood movies like Daal Mein Kuch Kala Hai and Zindagi 50-50 by Rajeev Roya and a 3D horror thriller; these are in their post production stage.

“All the above are woman-centric roles and for the horror movie, I have done a lot of action stunts. I’m also doing an item number for a movie starring Riteish and Genelia. The item number is just for fun I don’t want to be tagged as an item girl at all.”

Veena clears the air about the FHM shoot, which has landed her into a controversy, “I had done a cover shoot for them but I’m not nude and I’m wearing clothes. As for the matter, my lawyers will look into it as I’m busy with my Swayamwar.”

Veena Malik is just another nervous would-be bride with the wedding jitters and on the show, she will be sporting Indian costumes designed by Sabah Khan.

We can’t but ask Veena her fitness mantra! “According to me, one needs to be positive for keeping fit. I eat very less, but whatever I eat I make it a point that it is healthy. More than you’re eating habits it’s your lifestyle that matters.”

“I don’t do hard gymming at all but a bit of cardio exercises. I’ve turned into a vegetarian, which makes me feel ultra-light,” she signs off.

Jaskiran Khatra
Art Work: Jaskiran Khatra

Religion has the innate capacity to bind people from different parts of the world. This is perhaps the reason why Jaskiran Khatra, a homemaker based in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, tirelessly works with a local artisan to create images of religious symbols with sea shells.

Talking about her experience in exploring the dying art of Andaman Islands, she says, "When I first moved to Port Blair, it was overwhelming to witness the sanctity and devotion with which people prayed." Coming from a Punjabi family, Jaskiran felt left out when despite having five Gurdwaras, there was little awareness of Sikhism there. "South India is very proud of its religion, which strengthens beliefs in one's own religion as well," she smiles.

Keen on creating Guru Nanak Dev's image with sea shells, she approached several artists, who declined to do the kind of effort it really needed. "It is only Vijan, who has been religiously making the images for me," she says. "It is only because he is married to a Punjabi woman that he took interest in my kind of work," she adds while showing us an image of Guru Nanak Dev made in luminous mother-of-pearl.

If there is anything good produced anywhere in the world, China is sure to come out with a copy of it! "Yes, that is our biggest problem. Mother-of-pearl can be cultivated, but natural, sea-water mother-of-pearl will always be genuine," she informs. Considering that it comes out from the sea, there is a probability of it going extinct. "That is the only reason why the government has banned the sale and purchase of mother-of-pearl. Only licence-holders can indulge in exchange of the precious shell," she smiles.

Apart from a few customised pieces, she also has Khanda and Ek Onkar engraved on shells. "Not many artisans take it up as the tools invariably cause the fingers to bleed," she says. Not a viable option for mass production, Jaskiran respects that Vijan makes only one piece in around four months. "It is not possible to place a bulk
order as the engraving is very intricate and fragile," she says.

In Chandigarh for the next two weeks, she hopes to spread as much information on the dying art from the land of the sun and sand!

No more thank you!

Switch to unpleasant behaviour and avoid saying 'thank you' and 'sorry' during workplace interactions unless justified, if you want to climb the corporate ladder and earn big bucks, a new study has suggested.

A recent study examining the relationship between agreeableness, income and gender revealed that the workplace does tend to reward disagreeable behaviour. It showed that disagreeable men tend to earn more than agreeable men, and disagreeable women, though they earn less than both nice and not-nice guys, earn more than agreeable women.

The study analysed data from three separate surveys conducted over the past 20 years, including responses from thousands of workers of various ages, salary levels and professions. The authors also asked 460 business students to weigh in on hypothetical personnel decisions.

"Niceness in the form of the trait of agreeableness does not appear to pay," researchers said.

The study also found that the rewards of disagreeableness for women are limited, far more so than for men.

"If a man is disagreeable, he is thought to be tough and leader-like," one of the study's co-authors, Timothy A Judge said.

"If a woman is disagreeable, the 'b-word' is applied to her." The study has been published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. — ANI

Resort to the best...

The India Resort Fashion Week kicked off on Wednesday with designer James Ferreira's trends inspired by African influence of the mosaic cut, a riot of colours, pink primrose, orange, leaf green, dust gold, electric blue, gold yellow and reds with beige and whites at Grand Hyatt, Goa.

James started the catwalk with model Bhavna in white in asymmetrical tops paired with transparent skirts. The collection wrapped dresses in orange, purple, green, indigos, and non-colour beiges, whites, greys and blacks.

His menswear collection was exciting and even more trendier with Pakistani salwars, shorts over pants as bottoms paired with solid transparent shirts.

The resort look in women was the out of bath look with wet scrunched hair adorned with white jasmine flowers, very fresh and inviting.

Designer Aarti Vijay's imaginative spirit comes alive in her Fairytale collection of dream sequences in pristine whites with sequins, laces, nets and silver metallic tops.

Aarti's show started with playsuits in whites with silver metallic insets which is Asian (Japanese) influence of a sash belt.

The leggings with bustiers and transparent coats with gold and silver borders were dreamy and flowy. — TNS

Master Chef
Say cheese
Kandla Nijhowne

I have a confession to make...I suffer from Turophilia! I can see some eyebrows shoot up a mile in alarm. Let me put you at ease, dear readers! Turophilia is a love of cheese, bordering on obsession. Now, I can visualise countless hands going up in unison, voting into the cheese-lovers lobby! Cheese goes back a long way, with remains of it even found buried along with the Egyptian mummies. Strangely, cheese consumption helps fight tooth decay. I found this very unbelievable, given the sticky, gummy richness of cheese! I could safely have sworn cheese causes tooth decay itself.

Try this all-in-one cheesy casserole on a wintry day!

Cheesy broccoli and rice casserole

1 cup raw rice grains

3 tbsp melted butter

2 cups chopped broccoli

1 cup diced onion

200 gm mushrooms, chopped

½ cup diced celery (optional)

1-1½ cup processed cheese

½ cup milk

1 tsp prepared mustard

Salt and pepper

Method

n Boil rice in three cups of slightly salted water and drain.

n Steam the broccoli florets till tender but not mushy.

n Fry the onion, mushroom and celery (if using) in the butter.

n Season with salt, pepper, mustard and add cheese.

n Warm through for a few minutes till the cheese melts somewhat.

n Stir in the milk, the rice and the broccoli.

n Check seasoning and tip into an ovenproof dish.

n Bake in a pre-heated oven (175 degrees) for 35 minutes.

This warm, cheesy delight needs no supporting cast. It is great, served by itself!

Driving force

If you are one of those who always wondered why many women struggle while parking their cars, it's better to understand that it happens simply due to lack of confidence, says a US study.

A research has suggested ....lack of confidence is a factor in women's tendency to struggle in tasks requiring spatial awareness, a newspaper reported, adding that tests showed how women improved in these activities when their self-belief was given a boost.

University of Warwick psychology researcher Zachary Estes, working with Sydney Felker from the University of Georgia Health Centre, looked at the ability of 545 US students to perform a standard 3D mental rotation task, while at the same time manipulating their confidence levels. Estes, whose research paper is published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, said: "Prior research shows that women tend to do poorly on tasks that require spatial awareness."

"...We wanted to see why that was so. We manipulated people's confidence in our experiments with spatial tasks, and it does seem that confidence is a key factor in how well women perform at this kind of task.""Our research suggests that by making a woman feel better about herself, she'll become better at spatial tasks - which in the real world means tasks such as parking the car or reading a map.""So, a little bit of confidence-boosting may go a long way when it comes to reversing the car into a tight parking spot," said Estes. — IANS

Piaa tu ab to aa ja..

After doing southern movies, Piaa Bajpai shifted to Bollywood and has quietly finished shooting for her first Hindi movie.

“The shooting of the Hindi film is almost over with just a song pending. The producers are not keen about revealing anything about the film until the formal announcement is made. I am keen on doing more Hindi films,” said the actress. Piaa had huge success in Tamil movie Ko opposite young hero Jiiva, but didn’t do any Tamil film after that, but worked in Malayalam movie Masters.

“After Ko, I wanted that my next film in Tamil should take me to the next level. I got many offers but didn’t sign any project as I was getting the same bubbly girls roles offer.

“I didn’t want to be stereotyped. And certainly I didn’t want to be another Saro (her character in Ko),” said Piaa, adding: “When a good film from K-Town will come my way, I will consider it.” Piaa has always been maintaining that Bollywood is her ultimate goal.

PC goes for the Kill

Priyanka Chopra is known for her glamour, her sportiness, and her ability to kick butt convincingly. She just might do a Kill Bill style film with Farhan Akhtar.

Farhan Akhtar, the director of Don and Don 2, has been impressed with Priyanka’s ability and grace to do action scenes. She is very agile and flexible. She was good in the martial arts scenes in Don and has done even better action scenes in Don 2. Farhan says, “Priyanka has a super sense of timing. She is very quick in her reflexes. She blew us away with her bare-fisted hand-to-hand combat with some goons in one scene. She took my breath away. I am thinking that it is a good idea to cast her in action film, something on the lines of Kill Bill.”

He adds, “It is just an idea and details need to be worked out. All I can say that after Don 2, I won’t make another Don film for a while and I am looking at something new.’

Sources close to Priyanka say that she loves action and adventure. She is very versatile. She had more stunts than Abhishek in Drona and was almost the hero of that movie. She has amazing energy and is very keen on doing on action film, especially after doing sequences in Don, Drona, and Don 2.

‘Kolaveri’ magic once again

Emulating a successful trend is a common phenomenon in the film industry. Composer Yuvan Shankar Raja is all set to cash in the success of Tamil song Kolaveri by composing and crooning something similar for the movie Vettai.

Yuvan’s version of the song is titled Papparappa, part of Madhavan-Arya starrer Vettai. The peppy dance number, sung by Yuvan himself, will be released officially on December 12. The team of Vettai will shoot an in-studio video of the song in the lines of Kolaveri and uploaded it on the video sharing website. “The team felt that this number from the album (which has a total of five songs) has the potential to become a rage. It’s a party number and with Yuvan singing it, we wanted to make it special. We also decided to shoot a video of the song during the recording,” said a source.

“It will be shot on Arya, Maddy, director Lingusamy, lyricist Na Muthukumar and Yuvan himself. We are trying to rope in Amala Paul for the video as the song is picturised on her and Arya in the film. We want to make this the ‘Vettai team song’,” added the source. —IANS

Now the Khans can add ‘Balan’ at the end of their names: Vidya
Bold statement

Riding high on the success of The Dirty Picture, actress Vidya Balan, who has taken everyone by surprise with her bold portrayal of the role, inspired by late South Indian sex siren Silk Smitha, says the reigning Khans of Bollywood can now use ‘Balan’ as a suffix to their names.

“I feel blessed for so much of appreciation and gratitude. I am happy that I got the chance to work with good directors and I should not take credit for it. I have never been part of any race for the number one position or anything of that sort,” Vidya said.

“It feels good that people are saying that Dirty Picture is not dirty. The film is a huge landmark for me,” she said. On being asked is she is the new female Khan in the industry, Vidya chuckled, “Well, the Khans can now add Balan at the end of their names, instead of me adding Khan to my name.” Reportedly, Kareena Kapoor also intends to get ‘dirty’ with her upcoming film, Heroine, to which Vidya says, “I don’t think anyone can get dirty like this.” On whether she is the female version of Bollywood’s serial kisser Emraan Hashmi, Vidya says, “The idea is not bad. If girls are trying to outdo boys in all areas then why not in this way.” — PTI

Dramatic turn

A charming face, a captivating smile and a grand persona. Mix them altogether and meet this Lucknow-born commerce graduate Mikhill Chandiramani, a model and a passionate actor, who is riding high on the success of producer-director Sunil Agnihotri's fantasy drama Kahani Chandrakanta Ki, reportedly inspired from the book Chandrankanta Santiti. The show airs on Sahara One Television. This young model has famous brands like Adidas, Reebok, John Players, Peter England, Blackberry and many more in his kitty. How did you get this role?

I have done films like It's a Man's World, Veer and Anees Bazmee's It's My Life, produced by Boney Kapoor. I also did theatre with Saleem Arif and Nadira Babbar. After seeing my performance Sunil Agnihotri offered me the role.

How did you prepare yourself for this role?

I am relying on the script. As an actor my job is to play the character well. I know the adaptation is real and I am giving my best to my favourite show.

There are lots of biggies like Shikha Swaroop, Sonia Rakkar, Rajendra Gupta in the show. How does it feel working with them?

I am very happy to have been given a big platform and to have been given the opportunity to share the screen with many experienced and senior actors. Working with them, taking guidance and learning from them have been a gift to me. We are never treated like juniors. It is like a one big family.

The show is getting popular among the viewers. How do you look at it?

I am very excited that Kahani Chandrankanta Ki is getting a good response. When I go anywhere, people recognise me. We all are working hard to make the show a hit.

How is it working with the director?

Wonderful. Sunil Agnihotri is an easy-going guy, very down to earth and systematic in his working style.

You have been a model. What does fashion mean to you?

For me fashion is style and comfort. — Dharampal

If your birthday is December 9...

Confrontation isn't your favourite activity, but dealing with an issue will help you and your subordinates get closer, especially if the situation is a long-standing one. Your romantic energy can't be denied. It's a really good December for you to meet your next flame or to reconnect with an old one. You will have a difficult time streamlining your dreams in January. You want to go in several directions, which makes it hard to pick a single path. Ultimately you have to find your own calling; nobody else can do this for you. Sneaking off to some private retreat will help on Christmas or on December 31. After enjoying a few hours of silence, the answer you seek will become abundantly clear.

Around March, you'll decide you need to reflect. This will allow you to evaluate and to immerse yourself in a new field. You'll be able to stabilise your relationships and feel intense emotions. Health condition may deteriorate in February, but you'll be perfectly fit in March. Spending some quiet time with nature will do more for your social life than going to a popular club or party.
