Jaguar Squadron in Ambala completes 60 years

Ambala, December 8
Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne, Chief of the Air Staff, and Air Marshal DC Kumaria, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, revisited their old Jaguar Squadron based in Ambala as it celebrated 60 glorious years of its existence on December 6, 2011.

The Air Chief was on a two-day visit to the base, home to 14 Squadron christened ‘The Bulls’ in the Indian Air Force in 1951. Accompanied by Kiran Browne, President, AFWWA, they were received by Air Marshal DC Kumaria and Air Commodore PN Kaushik.

He was presented with a Guard of Honour followed by wreath laying at the station War Memorial, the ‘Frozen Tears’. The day saw the members of 14 Squadron, past and present getting together and sharing the nostalgia.

Man found dead under mysterious circumstances

Mohali, December 8
A body of a man, believed to be in mid-forties, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in fields near Kandala village here this morning. There were visible signs of strangulation on the neck of the victim and his face was smeared with blood, indicating that his face was hit by some hard object.

Till late this evening, effort to track down the identity of the victim had failed as assailants left no clue behind that could help establish his identity. “It seems that the youth belonged to an affluent family, as he was wearing branded jeans trousers, shirt and shoes.

The body was dragged for a few metres before he was done to death as there was signs of the victim’s body being dragged. The victim was apparently killed in the fields owned by Jarnail Singh, who had informed the police. A dupatta was found at the spot, indicating the presence of a woman at the time of the crime.

SHO Sohana Deepinder Singh said a case was registered and the matter was being probed. It is being believed that the youth had forcibly been brought there.

10-year-old killed in mishap

A 10-year-old boy was killed when an identified vehicle hit him near Maheshpur village last night. The deceased, identified as Rahul, a resident of Sector 3, was crossing a road when the vehicle hit him. While no one noticed that the child was lying on the road, vehicles kept crushing the body. Rahul had gone to play with his friends. It was in the morning that the police was informed about the accident. The family members identified the body.

Student dies

DERA BASSI: A girl student of Sukhmani College for Hotel Management, Dera Bassi, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the railway track. The deceased was identified Arshvi Mishra, a resident of Hemsikha Colony, Pinjore. No suicide note was found near the body.

30 nozzles stolen from PU

Chandigarh: Thieves took away 30 nozzles from a fountain at the Rose Garden in Panjab University opposite the VC’s office. The theft came to the light only today during an inspection of the Rose Garden by Horticulture Division Engineer Hardeep Singh when the nozzles at the fountain were noticed missing. Even as the police has registered a case at the Sector 11 police station, the police is still not clear about the exact date when the nozzles were stolen.

Missing Newborn
Raids conducted at various places

Panchkula, December 8
Even as the district police conducted raids at Chandigarh and Mullanpur to trace the women who allegedly took away a newborn from General Hospital on Tuesday, it is yet to get any breakthrough in the case.

Following the release of a sketch of one of the accused, a tip-off was received that a woman working in Sector 17 of Chandigarh looked like the sketch. However, the woman was found to be innocent, said the police. Another woman at Mullanpur was also found innocent. It was on Tuesday that Panchkula DC Maneesh Chaudhary formed a team comprising DSP Kalka, Krishan Kumar Hooda, SHO Sector 14 police station Aman Kumar, SHO Sector 5 police station, Inspector Dilip Singh and Inspector Karambir Singh. — TNS

DAV Club rout sacred heart to lift trophy

Girl players of DAV Club, Sector 8, lifted the Deepak Kampania trophy by defeating Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, in the finals of the Chandigarh Junior Football Tournament for Girl’s held at Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today. DAV Club’s team routed the star studded Sacred Heart School in a sudden death by 4-3. After the goalless draw in the regulation time, the match predication of match went to tie-breaker.

Pooja, Manpreet, Harleen Randhawa and Kishmita were the main scorers for the winning side while for rivals Ekta, Soumya and Tanvi Bhargava managed to score for the team. Deepika Saantha, Manpreet Kaur (GMSSS-22), Harleen Randhawa (DAV Club) and Syeba (Sacred Heart) were declared as the best players of the tournament.

Bowlers of Punjab team stood up to the decision of their skipper and bundled out the team of Andhra Pradesh on the first day of match Cooch Behar Trophy for Boys (U-19) elite (C), being played at PCA Cricket Stadium, Mohail, here today.

The wicket taking spells by Sandeep Sharma, Kamal Passi and Vinay Chaudhary helped the team to stand strong in the match.

On other hand, the Andhra batsman Srikar Bharat, who remained unbeaten on 122, was equally supported by Naren Reddy but the duo failed to guide the team to achieve a big total.

The team pilled up on the total of 241-runs in 78.2 overs.

Earlier, Sandeep Sharma trapped opener Udaya Sriram on the first ball of the innings.

Later, he took the second wicket on the fifth ball after Mohit Handa caught Panith Manyala.

Even after the regular fall of wickets, Srikar Bharat scored an unbeaten 122 off 217 studded with 12 boundaries and one six whereas his partner Naren Reddy completed his half-century off 59 including 8 boundaries.

For Punjab, Sandeep Sharma took 4 for 83, Kamal Passi 3 for 77 and Vinay claimed 2 for 38.

In reply, Punjab team scored 20 for no loss in 9 overs till the end of day with Manan Vohra (9) and Ankit Pursharthy (10) on crease.

Good news for sportspersons
Government may introduce ‘Right to Play’ in Haryana

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said the state government was considering to introduce “Right to Play” according to which access to optimum physical activity through sports would be ensured as a matter of right.

Hooda announced this while interacting with players and mediapersons at the sports complex in Sector 3 during the second round of Sports and Physical Aptitude Test (SPAT)-2012.

As many as 4 lakh players registered online in the first round of SPAT-2012, out of which 2 lakh qualified for the second round. The third and final round of the programme will be held from January 20, 2012, to January 25, 2012. Under the programme, 5,000 participants will be selected in which players aged between 8 and 14 will be given a scholarship of Rs 1,500 per month and players in the 15 to 19 age group will be given a scholarship of Rs 2,000 per month.

The Chief Minister said Haryana Premier League would be held in the state soon and various competitions would be organised during the league.

While calling upon players, parents and representatives of Panchayati Raj institutions to take up at-least one sport, Hooda said under SPAT-2012 the state government had provided Rs 10 crore as scholarship amount to 5,000 promising players.

Apart from this, 195 Rajiv Gandhi Rural Stadia were being set up, out of which 138 stadia had already been completed, he added.

“Twelve academies in different sports disciplines have also been set up in the state. The state government has given cash prizes worth Rs 32.42 crore to 6,976 players,” he added.

CC-42 Weightlifters bag title

The weightlifters of Coaching Centre, Sector 42, clinched the team championship title during the first day of Senior Chandigarh State Weightlifting Championship for Men and Women, being held at Weightlifting Hall of Sports Complex, Sector 42, here toady.

The weightlifters of the coaching centre scored a total of 131 points to bag the championship while the team of PGGCG, Sector 42, finished second in the championship with 127 points.

St Kabir cagers shine

Hosts St Kabir School drubbed New Public School, Sector 18, in a match of St Kabir Basketball Tournament being played, here today. In the match of girls’ category, the winning team defeated New Public School (NPS) by 34-10 with Rupika contributing 18 points.

She was equally supported by Sidhi (10 points) and Pooja (4 points). For NPS team, Amandeep and Komal chipped in six and four points, respectively.

In another match, St Anne’s School Sector 32, overcame St Xavier’s School, Mohali, by 39-19. Asmita contributed six points for the winners while Mannat added 12 points for St Xavier’s, Mohali.

In boys’ (sub-junior) category, the winning team overruled the opponents by 25-2 and 25-7 while in another match, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16; beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, by 25-14 and 25-16.

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, managed to register win over Sports Complex, Sector 46, by 25-17 and 25-22.
