Woman delivers baby outside maternity ward

Ambala, December 6
A woman delivered a girl child outside the maternity ward of the Civil Hospital in Ambala City last evening, as the doctor on duty refused to admit her to the hospital.

Mamta, a resident of Ghanora village, came to the hospital, along with her husband, last evening. She complained of severe pain, but the doctor refused to admit her saying it would take another two or three days for the delivery.

Mamta went into labour and gave birth to a girl child outside the maternity ward. On learning about the delivery, staff of the maternity ward took Mamta inside.

Later, her husband Tulsi Giri said negligence on the part of hospital staff had put the lives of his wife and newborn to risk.

On the other hand, the hospital staff refuted all allegations.

3 youths assaulted in Sector 40

Three youths sustained serious injuries after they were assaulted in the Sector 40 market last night. Gursewak Singh (28), a resident of Phase I, Mohali, and his two colleagues were attacked with sharp-edged weapons owing to prior enmity with the attackers.

The police has registered a case of attempt to murder and various Sections of the Arms Act against Prince, Jannat, Jat, alias, Sunny, and Manvir Singh of Mohali.
It said Prince had a criminal background and was arrested in cases of snatching and drug smuggling on the basis of information provided by Gursewak’s uncle. He thus attacked Gursewak.

Gursewak was coming out of an eating joint along with two of his colleagues when he was attacked. Prince was also carrying a revolver, the police added.

A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station and no arrests have been made so far.

 

 

Cops accused of demanding bribe

High drama was witnessed at the Faidan barrier here this evening when the driver of a pick-up truck alleged that a traffic police head constable, along with two traffic constables, demanded Rs 200 from him for not challaning him.

Satbir Sharma, a scrap dealer, said his driver Sonu was going to load scrap from Jagatpura. He was stopped by head constable Krishan Kumar, who was with two constables Rajinder and Jameshwar, and despite showing all documents, they demanded Rs 200 from him which he gave, he alleged.

A resident of Industrial Area, Satbir, called up the police control room and lodged a complaint with the Sector 31 police station.

Meanwhile, DSP (Traffic) Vijay Kumar has marked an inquiry into the incident and action will be taken accordingly.

Three held for gambling

Chandigarh, December 6
The police arrested three persons for gambling and one for selling liquor here today.
Cash amounting to Rs 10,300 was recovered from the possession of those involved in gambling.

It also arrested a notorious gambler, Ram Dhari, a resident of Burail village, who was organising ‘satta’ at Burail village and recovered Rs 4,000 in cash. A case under Sections 13A/3/67 of the Gambling Act has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

The police also arrested Ashok Kumar, a resident of Kajheri village, who was organising ‘satta’ at Kajheri village, Chandigarh, and recovered Rs 3,500 in cash.

In another case, the police arrested Chand Miyan, alias Guddu, for selling liquor at Kajheri village, Chandigarh, and recovered 57 quarters of country wine.

Shahbudin was also arrested for gambling and Rs 2,800 in cash was recovered from him.

Besides, the police arrested Roshan Lal, a resident of Indira Colony, Mani Majra, from Daria village and recovered 200-gm charas from his possession. A case under Section 20 NDPS Act has been registered against him.

One booked for forgery

The police has booked a Sector-35 resident in a case of forgery on the complaint of his father.

Jagjit Singh Sandhu, a Sector-33 resident, said his son Harmanjit Singh had changed the design of his house fraudulently. Harmanjit is residing in Sector 35. Sandhu alleged that his son managed to change the design of his house by obtaining permission from the competent authority by forging his signature. A case was registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Three theft incidents

Three theft incidents were reported in the city on Monday night. Arminder Singh of Royal Marble Shop in Dhanas reported to the police that someone had stolen a marble cutting machine from his shop. Rajesh Kumar of Sector 31 reported to police that one LPG cylinder, a DVD player, a wrist watch and some clothes were stolen from his house. While Gurpal Singh of Sector 33 said Simranjit Singh, whose address he did not know, stole his Honda City car from his house.

Three booked for assault

A shopkeeper, Yadwinder Singh, and his father Raj Bahadur were assaulted in Sector 26 on Monday night. The accused have been identified as Hardeep, alias Kaju, Manoj and Sukhwinder Singh. They also damaged the shop and fled from the spot. The exact reason behind the assault could not be ascertained. The injured were rushed to a hospital. A case was registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Man hit be car, dies

Zirakpur: An unidentified man died after he was run over by a car near Nabha Sahib gurdwara on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway on Monday night. The body of the deceased was sent to a hospital.

Sources said the body kept lying on the road for over an hour. The police said on receiving information about the accident it reached the spot and shifted the body to the hospital. A case was registered.

Body found

An unidentified body of a man in mid-fifties was found under the Zirakpur flyover near Kalka traffic light point here this morning. The body was sent to the Civic hospital for identification. An inquest proceeding has been initiated.

Double delight for Amandeep

Amandeep Singh of Lawrence Public School bagged two titles in the 100m and 400m events during the ‘Idea’ Junior League Inter-School Sports Championship held at the Sports Complex, Sector 46, here today.

Amandeep secured first place in the boys’ U-17 category, while Mehal Khera secured third place in the 800m event of the same category. A total of 17 schools participated in the tourney.

Punjab restrict J&K to 126

With rain playing a spoilsport during a match between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, the host team restricted JKCA (Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association) to a total of 126 for five in the Vijay Merchant Cricket Trophy Tournament being played at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium, Patiala.

Due to the continuous drizzle, only 49 overs were played on the first day of the match.

Batsmen of the JKCA team failed to face the bowling package of Punjab’s outfit, as Khushpreet Singh took three for 46, while Arpit and Ashutosh claimed one wicket each.

For JKCA, Shubham Singh (32) and wicketkeeper Ateev Saini (40) will open the team’s innings tomorrow.

The duo scored an unbeaten 64 runs for the sixth wicket and helped the team to score 126 runs till the close of the day’s play.

DAV eves thrash Sacred Heart

DAV Football Club drubbed Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, during a match of the ongoing Junior Girls’ State Football Championship being held at the Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today.

The winning team thrashed the opponents by a margin of seven goals to nil. Pooja opened the account for the team in the second minute, while Taharni doubled the lead after scoring in the 10th minute.

In the second half of the game, Niti and Jagpreet scored two goals each, while Taharni scored the final goal of the game.

In the second match, riding high on Amanjot’s hat-trick, the team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, (GMSSS-37) routed Girls Football Club by 3-0. Amanjot took the team to register the victory after scoring in the seventh, 27th and 30th minute of the game.

Earlier in the league matches, Sacred Heart School ousted Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22 (GMSSS-22), by 1-0.

Women cricket team selected

The women selection committee of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has selected a 15-member women’s team for playing in the upcoming North Zone (T-20) League Competition to be held at Una, Himachal Pradesh.

The team will play its first match against Haryana on December 15.

Before participating, the team will undergo a coaching-cum-practice camp at the Gandhi ground, Amritsar, from December 7 to 13.

Aneesh pockets seniors’ title

Ace cueist Aneesh Saini routed Sameer Bhalla to win the final of the senior snooker and billiards category during the 26th Haryana State Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Billiards and Snooker Championship being held here today.

Sameer went down against Aneesh by 3-1. Aneesh Saini kept his cool and won the first frame on the blue ball, while in the second frame, Sameer Bhalla hit a break of 41 points but Aneesh Saini potted two pink balls top win the frame.

Sameer Bhalla came back in the match after making hit breaks of 32 and 42 but later in the fourth frame Aneesh made break of 46 points on yellow ball to name the match.

Earlier in the semifinals, Aneesh defeated Umesh Gupta on black ball of the decider frame, while Sameer overcame Divya Sharma by 3-0.
