Three cheers to Baby Bachchan!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has delivered a baby girl. We do a quick round-up of reactions, right from the suggested baby names to ‘do we have a future Miss World’?
Manpriya Khurana

Twitter must have swelled to capacity with the exclamations and the congratulations over the new born baby. But weren’t we tweeting already over the million dollar question — a boy or a girl? Among the compulsive betters, those hooting for the boy have already lost. By now, it’s stale news that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has delivered a baby girl!

Since we’ve shamelessly tracked her baby bumps, talked about it all her expecting months, tabbed her baby shower, betted on the gender, debated over the delivery date and now are already predicting her future…whether she’ll win the Miss World crown!

In keeping with the ‘festive spirit’, we bring you a quick round up of random reactions, right from the suggested baby names to ‘do we have a future Miss World’ in place? Shrugs Glory Khanna, psychology student, DAV college, “I was somehow expecting it to be a boy, but when I came to know that it’s a girl…my instant reaction was - how sweet.” She adds, “There have been people going crazy over names, with a deluge of Facebook links on the subject. Everyone’s like - whatever the name, the initials of the baby should be AB only. But if I come to think of it, the name should begin with J, at least someone to give company to Jaya Bachchan.”

And then there are those who don’t understand the ruckus around. After all, what’s the big deal? We’ve had stars have babies before and it’s already a nation of billion plus. Laughs DJ Rohit, “Yeah, I came to know they had a baby girl because I saw a couple of tweets in the morning. But honestly, I don’t have an opinion on the subject because I don’t follow them keenly.” As if we’ll let him put a rational end to our excitement!

As of now, the doctor, the engineer, the manager, the real estate investor, they all have an opinion and an interest (if not a stake) over the future of the child. Shares Vimal Roy Bhola, from Rudra Events, “If I could, I’d name the girl Parineeta. And if she inherits either of her parents’ looks, I think she has the potential to become a future Miss World. Come to think of it, she is a very blessed baby because she wouldn’t have to go anywhere for any sort of training or guidance.”

Amidst the ruckus, we hope it puts the spotlight back on where it ought to - girl is the new boy! Opines Pushpinder Sharma, president, Panjab University Campus Students Council, “Here in north, where we are already battling female foeticide, I hope they play the right role in propagating the girl child. I’m sure their fans will follow them and their thought process. Apart from that I congratulate them.” What will happen once the baby’s pictures are released, our guess is as good as yours! Meanwhile, we hope the star couple plays the rightful champion of the girl child cause and take their stardom to another level.

Tapestry of dance
Tradition comes alive when the need to reconnect arises. And this dance troupe from Tibet tells us how folklore is not just about entertainment, but a way of life...
Vasudha Gupta

The pace at which the Lady Gagas and Rakhi Sawants are busy ruining the essence of dancing in India, the day is not far when traditional forms of this art will be history. Keeping this in mind, the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youth (SPIC-MACAY), in association with the Department of Evening Studies and the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), has brought together dances from the Roof of the World.

Transporting us into the world of Buddha and Tibetan folklore, Tenzin Lhaksan, secretary of TIPA, shares his views. “The institute is inclined towards not only teaching, but also acting as the cultural ambassadors of Tibetan dance forms. We aim at keeping our rich culture alive,” he says.

The dances from the Tibet will be an amalgamation of three forms. “Tibetan culture is such that each district has its distinctive music, which is passed on to the next generation. Being hill people, it is sometimes the only form of entertainment we have,” he adds.

The event will focus on promoting the ceremonial dance, which is also known as the dance of the gypsies. If it exists today, it will surely have history behind it. “It is believed that this dance brings good luck,” says Tenzi. “The lyrics are spiritual in nature and the dance has evolved over the past 1,000 years,” he adds. Like the Indian calendar, which swells with events, days and religious dates, the Tibetan calendar is pretty much the same. “There are changes, which have been done to the art form, nevertheless it remains alive,” Tenzin smiles.

The group of 19, dressed in traditional costumes, will also dance to romantic and love songs. The summer marks the beginning of fresh love among the youth. “Marking this, the younger generation interacts and recites love poems, which will be the second part of the performance,” he adds. The performers have been gathered from various pockets of India and brought together to keep the art alive.

Buddha, symbolic of peace, which reflects in the Tibetan refinement, also travelled from India. This is where the ritual dance of Tibet was born. “It was during the 13th century that a yogi discovered this form of performing art,” Tenzing shares. Interestingly, the stories are inspired by ancient Indian mythological scripts. “The style and characters come from here and they are adapted to Tibetan forms,” he says. Using traditional instruments, such as Drumian, Tambura, Yang Chin and Piwang for the music, it surely is a delight for the senses.

Talking about the University being the biggest point for the students of the region, Usha Tewari, Chairperson of the Department of Evening Studies, says, “It is important to promote traditional art forms in Chandigarh and keep them alive.”

Know the artist

Nainsukh (1710 - 1778) was trained in a traditional Pahari painters’ family-workshop at Guler in today’s Kangra district. He became the major retained artist at the court of Jasrota (J&K). Famous for his intimate, well observed and precise, sometimes humorous, often somewhat enigmatic, always sensitively drawn pictures, especially of his long-time patron Balwant Singh, Nainsukh is today considered the most extraordinary Indian artist of his time.

Women can detect your hidden ‘beauty’ online

Trying to woo a woman just by posting your best-looking snap alongside an online profile may not be the best idea after all--a study has found that women can identify a physically attractive man just by reading his profile.

According to the university study, good-looking men were able to convey their confidence and attractiveness in their written self-description and the women volunteers were able to recognise their beauty without being shown the man’s photograph.

Men whose photos were rated as attractive had written profiles that were also deemed to be attractive, despite words and images being rated by different judges, the study conducted by Villanova University in Philadelphia, US, found.

As part of the study, 100 men’s profiles were divided into four sets of 25 with each of the 50 female rating one subset of 25 photos and a different subset of 25 profile texts. As many as 50 female university students were asked by academics to examine profiles and pictures of 100 men aged 22-25 who had posted on a popular dating website. Each of these students was given 25 photographs and advised to rate how attractive they found each man if they were to consider him for a date, short-term sexual encounter or long-term relationship. They were also asked to observe how confident and masculine he seemed from the picture. — IANS

Green thumb
Exotic touch
Satish Narula

Nothing can match the pleasure of plucking a fruit or a vegetable from one’s own garden. The freshness is the best reward.  Besides, growing one’s own vegetables gives one a surety against the consumption of vegetables obtained from market and suspected to be loaded with insecticides. Try your own hand this winter on growing your own vegetables.

During the winter months when you go to the market, you find an abundant flow of vegetables like radish, turnip, carrot, peas, cauliflower, cabbage etc. One starts thinking whether it is wise to put in the labour and expenditure to grow something which is easily available in the market.  Yes, besides the above said advantages, one can try one’s hand on the growing of some exotic vegetables like the red, yellow and green capsicum, Brussel’s sprout, broccoli, asparagus, parsley, leek, lettuce and the baby corn.

Now, the question arises what extra or different a gardener has to do to get the extra benefit of growing these exorbitantly priced vegetables in the garden.  Almost nothing! These vegetables are easily grown in this climate and not much extra technology is required to do so. For the coloured capsicum, seeds are grown and seedlings transplanted before the winter sets in.  The seedlings are then protected against the winter frost and one starts getting to see the brightly coloured fruit on the plants that give early crop. At that time, the rate of vegetable touches the sky.

Broccoli can easily be grown like cauliflower, cabbage and knolkhol.  See, the accompanying picture.  Leek has the same way of growing as the onion which will be grown in the coming months. Baby corn is another form of maize and can be grown as such.

Further more, it is not difficult now-a-days to contact the right source for getting the information on horticultural problems which is easily available.  For getting information on such crops and others, one can contact the vegetable department of PAU or the sub-stations of university spread in almost every district of Punjab. The specific information on the growing of vegetables and fruits is bound in the form of very lowly prized bulletins available at Punjab Agriculture University.

Sweet nothings!
Baklava, originally a Turkish sweet dish, is now a mouth-melting dessert of the region
Vasudha Gupta

Have you ever walked into a bakery feeling sick and tired of the tasted varieties of cakes, pastries, cookies and the small chocolate delights lined up behind the counter? If the boondi ka laddos are too traditional for you, why don’t you give it an Arabic twist and try out the varieties of baklava, particularly today on the National Baklava Day?

As several countries take credit for the delight, Turkey steers clear and takes all the credit for introducing the world to the mouth-melting dessert. Talking about how they were introduced to the concept of a Baklava, the chefs from the town had all kinds of fun-filled responses. Nikhil Mittal, owner of the Nik Bakers, shares his side of the story. “It was in Australia that I worked in a Greek Café and saw it for the first time,” he says.

The traditional way of serving this delight is hot out of the oven with loads of sugar syrup on the top. Made carefully, with thin phyllo dough, the entire dish is made with countless hours of toil and labour. “Just one small tear here or there and two-three hours of effort go waste,” he says. Running out of stocks for the expert spelt running into losses. “On Diwali, we had an overwhelming number of orders; I procured the dough from New Zealand and ran out of it at the last minute. A special order was brought in at double the cost. I just could not bear to send customers away,” he laughs.

Not only is this bakery going to dole out a special offer for the National Baklava Day, even the five stars are planning their bit. Making five varieties of exotic Baklava, Chandigarh Baking Company, (CBC) the very fine bakery of JW Marriott, is busy packing and sending customized orders to the hoity-toitys of the city. “We use all kinds of nuts and dry fruits in our baklavas,” says Santosh Rawat, Pastry Chef. If it is further variation you are looking at, try out the chocolate and raspberry baklavas. Apart from the dessert delicacy, the sweet dish is also eaten on Ramadan. “It also has religious significance in the middle-east,” he adds.

Introduced to this during his training period, the chef swears that it is the fastest moving dessert in CBC. “The crowd in Chandigarh is innovative and creative, so it perfectly gels with their taste,” he says. For Ramit Kohli, sous Chef, Taj, Chandigarh, it was during his stint with Taj Delhi nine years back that he came face-to-face with this dessert. “I had read several books and had a rough idea about it, but it was only then that we introduced it in the menu,” he says. Now, the dessert is made on order and its only today that it will feature in the coffee shop menu.

Make space, for the Arabic delight is here to stay!

Fun Facts

One of the oldest known recipes for a sort of proto-baklava is found in a Chinese cookbook written in 1330 under the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty under the name güllach (Buell, 1999). “Güllaç” is found in Turkish cuisine. In Turkey, Gaziantep is famous for its baklava and regarded there as its native city, though it only appears to have been introduced to Gaziantep from Damascus in 1871. In 2008, the Turkish patent office registered a geographical indication certificate for Antep Baklava.

Anna Kathuria
Brand value: Anna Kathuria

Fashion and haute couture are an integral part of growing up. Yet, there are only a few who have the knack of  deserving a second glance. It could be their natty sense of dressing up or even an attitude they wear on their sleeve.

English honours student Anna Kathuria belongs to the fashion brigade, and won’t be caught dead in the run of the mill kind of stuff…

Your sense of style?

For me being stylish definitely means trendy and aware of the latest in fashion. But one has also to be different and unique. To a certain extent, simplicity works wonders.

The latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

My one-piece black dress which I bought on my trip to London.

Brand crazy or street pick ups?

Only brands for me.

Your style icon would be…

Can’t decide between the three—Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu.

Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity?

I don’t feel like judging any body but I certainly would not follow Rakhi Sawant’s way of dressing!

Which look would your prefer–sporty, chic or glamorous

Glamorous of course!

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension?

Shocking punkish colours for they are not feminine at all.

Your take on accessories?

Accessories help to accentuate the look but they must be well co-ordinated and trendy. Like karas with western attire are in fashion these days.

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

What ever I wear, I wear with confidence!

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Go for your goal
Simmi Waraich

I am overweight. My family keeps telling me to lose weight. I feel low and depressed because I am unable to control my urge to eat. Nor can I exercise. I want to lose weight but end up getting angry at my family when they tell me I am fat.

Seema, Ludhiana

Each of us has a conflict between our short-term desires and long-term goals. We would prefer to eat that cake now and yet we worry about how we are not getting thin. To resolve these conflicts and achieve our goals, we need to alter our environment (in creative ways) so our desires and goals are aligned.

First, it makes sense to do it right now, this minute, because now is the moment we have the energy of motivation.

Second, we need to stop putting ourselves down. If our family tells us we are fat and need to lose weight, don’t take it personally. We would not take it personally if we were too thin and needed to gain weight. So, first let go of the conditioning. If you are fat, it’s okay. You are not going to get thin overnight.

If you get cravings for food, imagine yourself eating a plateful of it. Like, if you feel like eating a cake slice, imagine eating the whole cake in your mind. Then delay it for 10 minutes. Have a glass of water. Then ask yourself if you really want it after 10 minutes. Keep a diary and monitor your cravings and how you dealt with it. Take time, make a realistic plan. Talk to yourself to follow it for three weeks. The main aim should be controlling the urge to overeat and to exercise, losing weight is secondary. If you make losing weight primary, the focus shifts and it becomes more difficult. See what makes you binge eat, are there any triggers you can identify? If you generally feel low about yourself, that could be the main trigger. So work on your self-confidence and self-esteem first.

My girlfriend got pregnant as we were not careful. I told my parents and she had a medical termination of pregnancy. My family and her family are supportive but I have been feeling guilty. So much so that I pray the whole day. I keep asking for forgiveness and it is affecting my work and health. I don’t feel like doing anything or meeting people. Do I need help?

Vishal, Chandigarh

Yes, you do need an assessment. Do not ignore your mental well-being just as you would not ignore it if you had fever or jaundice or any physical illness. You maybe slipping into depression—getting help for it in the form of medication or regular counselling are important. At times, a life event such as this can trigger a depression. Try and maintain a routine, including regular exercise, stay with friends and family and identify thoughts that are upsetting you and learn to develop rational answers to the thoughts. If you feel, however, that you are not being able to control them, see your doctor or psychiatrist.

Sleep talk

Now a robotic bear that stops you from snoring

A research group from Japan has come up with a robotic bear that flips over people’s heads in their sleep to open the airways and stop them from snoring.

Waseda University researchers built a bear that works as a pillow with a built-in microphone to detect loud snoring, which then reaches out with its paw to turn the snorer’s head sideways.

The motion should push sufferers of sleep apnoea, the loud form of snoring that can be dangerous not only to relationships but to health, into a position where they no longer snore.

The bear named Jukusui-kun meaning ‘deep sleep’ was shown off at the International Robot Show in Japan. Rather than wires trailing through the bed, information is conducted through the sleeping body to a sensor beneath the sheets. A hand sensor monitors blood oxygen level and pulse rate and communicates to the system when snoring is causing dangerous drops in blood oxygen. — ANI

Abhay on the go!

Abhay Deol
DIFFERENT TAKE: Abhay Deol

Abhay Deol has proved his flair for commercial cinema with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. His next film is Shanghai. He talks about movies, friends, and equations.

Career graph

One-and-a-half-years ago I was in New York, chilling and polishing my acting. Shooting for ZNMD was like a holiday. We had such a great time in beautiful Spain. Then I shot for Shanghai, Singularity is also complete, and now Rock The Shaadi begins. I will take a break after a couple of movies release.

Films I love

I am dying to watch Rockstar. You know I made my debut in Socha Na Tha. I enjoyed working with Imtiaz Ali and I knew he would make it big. I have loved all his films as he has a different vision for romance. He understands love so well that I doubt today any other director can make such sweet love stories. And I know Rockstar is one of the best films ever and of course it has Ranbir too who is a great actor. No other films have excited me. Even The Dirty Picture looks interesting.

Relationship with Dibakar

Even I read that story and it was funny. I don't know who spreads such rumours. Dibakar and I understand each other very well. He is one of my favourite directors. We have a kind of understanding with our work culture that whenever he makes movie if it has any kind of role for me, he asks me. But that doesn't mean he will not make films with other people or I will get jealous. C'mon, we are grown up enough!

Shanghai calling

It's an amazing film based on some true events. I am sharing the screen with Emraan Hashmi in the film. Initially I didn't know him much but he has grown to become a great actor and he has his own style of screen presence. And the story is so strong that it needed a strong actor like Emraan. It will be another hardcore film by Dibakar.

On the personal front

You know I keep it personal but let me clarify that I am not getting married and I am not denying any relationship. I prefer to keep my relationship to myself. If I talk about it, how is it personal? — HRM

HAIR CARE: Manasi Scott

Singer Manasi Scott made her debut in the Bollywood film Jhootha Hi Sahi as the second leading lady. She is known for her sensuous voice but more of that she is known for her beauty. So we caught up with her and asked her for tips to maintain hair.

Always wash your hair after it's been sprayed, no matter how tired you are, never sleep with back-combed or product sprayed hair.

Heat is awful for the hair and my hair gets blow-dried almost everyday. A serum/pre product is very important like a leave-in conditioner or protein spray. You should always coat your hair before exposing it to heat.

Protein in your diet!! If you are a vegetarian then a protein supplement is essential and also Vitamin B12.

For frequently couloured hair, like mine, extra care is more important. Change your shampoo and conditioner monthly. I go between Bumble and Bumble and L'oreal. A great repair-moisture replenishing shampoo, conditioner and hair masque is must.

Eating right

Miranda Kerr
Balancing act: Miranda Kerr

Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr says she tries to eat healthy to maintain her trim figure.

The 28-year-old said she has always eaten healthily as she knows it's very important for her body, but allows herself the occasional treat. Kerr has a 10-month-old son, Flynn, with husband Orlando Bloom.

"My grandparents had a vegetable patch and taught me a lot about growing food and eating organically. I eat super-healthily, lots of vegetables and fish, but that's not just because I'm a model. It's to give my body the fuel it needs. And I don't deny myself anything. Life is about balance, and you have to be able to have some treats now and again," Kerr said.

The model also said she maintains her stunning figure by exercising regularly. "I do a lot of yoga, pilates and strength training all year round."

Malaika Arora Khan loves showing off her hot bod and doesn't miss one opportunity. She is short but her shapely legs drive men crazy!!

Priyanka Chopra is quite tall and her legs are one of her assets which is why she is seen in mostly cocktail dresses that highlight her dusky and shapely legs. She's sexy and she knows it!

No show

Madhuri Dixit’s legs look too skinny for her own good so she should keep them covered. She is very Indian in her appearance so these dresses don't suit her. The dress is outdated and ill-fitted to begin with. The look is so dated and tacky!

If your birthday is November 17...

Your birth on the 17th day under Scorpio advises to keep your loved ones close by your side as now is not the time to go solo. You'll be willing to talk about anything, so why not use this opportunity to have a heart to heart conversation? You can't fight it -- this just isn't your day! The good news is that your time is coming sooner than you think, but for now, you've got to deal with quite a few people who are pushier than you want them to be.

Although you are probably very honest and ethical, this birthday enables you to be shrewd and successful in the world of business and commercial enterprise. A sensitive nature, often repressed below the surface of awareness, makes it hard to give or receive affection. You're feeling ambitious right now, and looking forward to getting involved in a new project. Make it a shared effort, and you'll also strengthen your bond with your loved one.

The proactive steps you take now in dealing with it have long-lasting effects.
