Three hurt in brawl

Dera Bassi, November 12
Three persons were injured during a brawl, following a dispute over the place of installation of an electricity transformer in Karkaur village last evening. The injured were admitted to GMCH, Chandigarh, and Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

As per the information, one of the injured, Balwinder Singh, was shifted to the GMCH, Chandigarh, while Ajit and his brother, Kaka, had been admitted to the Civil Hospital.

The dispute over the place for the installation of transformer turned violent last evening. Balwinder Singh and his supporters were adamant to install the transformer in the street, while residents had been opposing it saying the street was not wide enough where the transformer could be installed. To sort out the problem, electricity department SDO Mahinder Pal also visited the spot.

Dera Bassi police officials said the persons, opposing the installation of the transformer, manhandled Balwinder. Two persons, belonging to other group, also sustained injuries.

Doctor arrested under MTP Act

Ambala, November 12
The police has arrested a doctor of a private nursing home, Ambala City, under the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTP Act) for allegedly aborting an unmarried girl (21) here this morning.

The raiding team consisting Dr Sangeeta Goyal, Dr Ashok Sharma and Dr TS Sahani recovered a five-and-a-half month male foetus from the nursing home. Investigating official Sub-Inspector Mahavir Singh told the doctor had been booked under various sections of the Act.

Civil Surgeon Dr Satish Aggrawal said on a tip-off, a raid was conducted on the nursing home. He said the police personnel in plain cloths were deputed in the area to keep a vigil. Sources have informed that the girl who got the pregnancy terminated was in the clinic at the time of the raid.

The doctor of the nursing home, Dr Satyapal said the girl came to his nursing home in a serious condition and there was no option but to operate her to save her life.

10 ‘thieves’ booked
But police fails to nab them

The CIA wing has booked 10 persons in cases of theft. The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, Jarnail Singh, Prem Chand, Nirmal Singh, Sajan Singh, Gurmukh Singh, Khushpreet Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Gagandeep and Bhagwandas.

A police official stated that a team at the bus stand here got information that the accused, involved in various cases of theft, were roaming in the area.

The police team raided the spot, but the accused fled the area, he added. A case under Sections 379, 380 and 382 of the IPC was registered against them.

Dowry case

The police today booked Lakhvir Singh of Ropar in a dowry case on the complaint of Harjeet Kaur. In her complaint, she alleged that her husband was harassing her to bringing more dowry.

Army recruitment drive

A team from the Western Command Headquarters headed by Col Anil Sharma conducted preliminary interviews at the Shri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET), Dera Bassi, to screen final and pre-final year students of all branches for TGC-115, SSC (W) T-10 and UES-22 schemes.

More than 60 students from SSIET, Punjabi University, Patiala, and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engineering and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib, participated in the drive.

They were subjected to group discussion and personal interview rounds before shortlisting them for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews. — OC

HC issues notice to Panchkula police
Rape victim, a TV actress, seeks fair probe; replies sought by Jan 27

In a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Panchkula police in the TV actress rape case on a petition filed by the victim, seeking a fair investigation.

The victim sought the issuance of directions to the Haryana Director-General of Police and the Ambala Commissioner of Police to protect the life and liberty of hers and of her husband.

She also pleaded for directions to the Panchkula police for a proper investigation. Even after registering a case against the accused, Atul Kumar, the police had failed to take any action.

While the accused had not been arrested so far, police officials had been pressurising her and her husband for hammering out a compromise with him, she alleged in the petition.

The high court asked the State of Haryana, along with the Haryana Director-General of Police, the Ambala Commissioner of Police, Chandi Mandir SHO Jungsher Singh and inquiry officer Satpal Singh, to file their replies by January 27 next.

The 27-year-old woman was allegedly drugged and raped on October 27 on the pretext of providing her a chance to work in Bollywood.

She alleged that Atul gave her a soft drink laced with a drug and she fell unconscious on consuming it. She added that Atul parked the car at a secluded place near a hillock and raped her.

Woman duped of Rs 50,000 at bank

A nurse with Fortis Hospital in Mohali was duped of Rs 50,000 at Syndicate Bank, Sector 17, where she had gone to deposit the money, today. Bhavnesh Mohini reported to the police that a person approached her in the bank and offered to help deposit the money.

As she handed over the money to him, she was told to get a photocopy of her ID. She went out to get her ID xeroxed but on return found the person missing.

A case has been registered at the police station-17.

Two duped of Rs 24 lakh
Two travel agents arrested

Two persons have allegedly been duped of Rs 24 lakh by travel agents here. Following a complaint by Jaspreet Singh of Yamunanagar district, the police has registered a case against Jujhar Singh, his wife Gyan Kaur and their son Avtar Singh, residents of Sector 20, and their partner Vivek.

While Jujhar and Vivek were arrested this evening, the other accused were still at large. Jaspreet reported that he met them a few months ago for visa for himself and Vikramjeet Singh of Yamunanagar.

He added that he paid them Rs 24 lakh for the purpose and the accused provided visa papers for both. He said that they were told that the documents were fake when they reached the Delhi airport to board the flight.

Man booked in dowry case

The police has booked a Pinjore resident for demanding dowry and torturing his wife. The complainant, Anjali of Sector 11, married Rohit of Pinjore in 2006.

In her complaint, she stated that Rohit and his parents started harassing her and demanding dowry. The police registered a case against the husband.

Local badminton player Rupinder Singh defeated Kenneth Wong by 2-0 in the boys’ U-19 category during the ongoing XXIII Chandigarh State Badminton Championship being held at the badminton hall of Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

Rupinder thrashed Kenneth (21-9, 21-14), while Kailash clinched four titles in the girls’ singles, doubles (U-17) and (U-19) category.

Government Model High School, Mani Majra (GMHS- Mani Majra) defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 47 (GMSSS-47), in the first match of the Inter-School Volleyball Tournament being held here today.

GMHS-Mani Majra beat GMSSS-47 by 21-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22 in the second match of the day. GSSS-27 defeated GMSSS-26 by 25-21, 25-17 and 25-18.

SGGS lads claim top spot

Athletes of SGGS College, Sector 26, with 95 points and Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, with 76 points finished first in the men’s and women’s category, respectively, of the 64th Panjab University Annual Athletics Meet on Panjab University campus here today.

In the men’s group, SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, finished second with 33 points, while DAV College Sector 10 with 17 points and Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Abohar, with 15 points finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the women’s category, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, finished second in the competition with 45 points, while GTB Khalsa College for Women, Dasuya, secured 31 points to finish third in the event. GGS College for Women attained fourth place with 15 points.

Kashish Khanna (shot put winner) of PU Campus was adjudged the best athlete in the men’s section, while Nainy Bala (200 m winner) of Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, became the best athlete among women.

Also, Sharandeep Kaur (100 m winner) of Dasmesh Girls College of Education, Badal, and Rahul (javelin throw winner) of SCD Government Evening College, Ludhiana, were declared best athletes in the evening and education college category.

Government Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra (town) got the better of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, in a match of the ongoing Inter-School Football Tournament for Boys (U-14) being held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here today.

The winning team overpowered the rivals by 1-0. Bhupinder scripted the team’s win after scoring a goal in the 29th minute. In another match, Government Model High School, Sector 42, got the better of Government Model High School, Sector 38 (W), by 6-0, while Shishu Niketan School, Sector 43, defeated Shri Arbindo School, Sector 27, by 2-0.

Haryana Police to face BSF in final

The Haryana Police defeated Punjab Police in the semifinal of the 60th All-India Police Hockey Championship in Ranchi today. The winning team outplayed Punjab Police by 1-0.

The team will now face BSF in the final. “The team has played well and we hope that the team will also win the final,” Ranjeev Sigh Dalal, director-general of the Haryana Police. — TNS
