The winter season is the perfect time to bring out velvet dresses from the back of the closet for all the holiday parties, cocktail parties and family gatherings. Velvet is great because it can be dressed up or down. Wear it with a T-shirt and jeans for an androgynous look, or wear over your red carpet styles to make it sweet and feminine. Velvet is generally chunky; so make sure that yours is well-tailored and cut a little trimmer to create a slim fa`E7ade.
It can make you look a cinema star on the Filmfare nights. As fashion designer Randeep Desai says, it is luxurious, sensual and is ideal for party wear in winter. But you have to wait for the evening parties to wear it, as the glossy velvet looks too shiny in daytime. Believe it or not, there are many types of velvets, cotton, silk and satin varieties. Of these silk velvet is considered best for making dresses. Firstly, recognise that velvet is often confused with velveteen and corduroy.`A0To these names you can also add finishing processes known as "devore" and burnout velvet or flock and embossed velvet, which can confuse even more. Basically, these are all pile fabrics that stand up from the back of the cloth.`A0The surface of the fabric is a series of loops which can be cut or left uncut, dependant on method of manufacture or end product. An uncut pile fabric will have a pile surface, whereas a cut pile fabric will have a nap surface. One advantage is that velvet has deep and rich colours like violet, purple, wine red, black, dark brown, Moroccan blue and olive green. While a wide variety of imported velvet is available, the Indian velvet is also very commendable. As fashion designer Umesh Jiyani states, the Indian velvet compared to foreign velvet has a two-toned shadow effect and gives your dress a vintage look in a positive way. But the imported velvet has solid shades. Recently, designers have turned to flocking velvet, a sort of satin materials with velvet motifs embossed on it. According to designer Payal Singhal, it is necessary that you have a slim figure for velvet to suit you, as it is a thick fabric. Again, velvet in its jewelled hues, suits the sub-continental skin shadings. But it has a tendency to make you look slightly larger. As such it is advisable to go in for a velvet jacket or skirt, but never a velvet combination of both. According to fashion designer Rina Dhaka, internationally velvet is in every winter collection. In India also designers have realised its plus points, as a rich fabric which adds sheen to clothes. Again, it depends on the combination in which you are wearing your velvet dress. Designer Asgarally says: " Try a velvet skirt with an antique sari border and team this with an asymmetrical georgette off the shoulder top to ensure that you have a delicate feminine look. If you have worn the same old outfit for the last few years, give it a fresh personalised look with embossing. It is easy and will give any antique piece of fashion a great new look. And when the compliments begin to roll in, be sure to tell them it is one of your own designs. Velvet picks up fluff, lint, dandruff, threads.`A0So, often, all these bits show to the detriment of the fabric.`A0Velvet is beautiful when the appearance is pristine and plush. Whatever you do, do not wear it with the same colour velvet pant.. — MF
