Fast forward
Gone are the days when Karva Chauth was only for the married women. It's now a popular festival in colleges; among those dating and those committed
Vasudha Gupta

We have spent all our lives watching women in the family getting up at 4:00 in the morning, eating a sumptuous meal and spending the entire day without a morsel…for the sake of love! This is perhaps one customary tradition that has not changed much except the fact that the younger generation is becoming increasingly inclined towards worshipping for the sake of tradition!

One step into any local girls' college, the banter grips over. The chit-chat, the twisting of locks while talking on the phone and the endless laughters take over. It is the one question, which scares some and brings a smile on the other's face. Are you fasting on Karva Chauth?

From the shy glances, to saying no, when a part of them wants to say yes, we got several responses. A chosen few mustered the guts to talk about their fiancés and loved ones. "I have been in a strong relationship since the past seven years," shares Bhavneet Kaur, a second-year Student at Government College for Girls, Sector 11. Planning to marry next year, she has been fasting since three years. "I am waiting for the sargi to come tomorrow," she smiles.

Plus, the college just adorns a more festive look. "So many girls in the hostel fast. They just don't want to talk about it," smiles Jyoti Bhardwaj, a second-year student from a local college. "Everyone puts mehendi and a majority of them fast for their boyfriends," laughs Ridhi Nagpal, biting into a samosa.

Unaware of the traditions, many Punjabi girls also observe the fast. "I started fasting since last year and just wanted to be with the crowd," says Satveer Kaur, a BA second-year student in GCG. Being a Punjabi, she has been religiously following the rules and learning from the group. "We had sargi at 5:00 am. After the gobi ke pranthe we had in the mess, rest everything was just the wait for the moon," she says.

With kathas happening in the dorms and the common room, the festivities don't leave any one out, "Oh, there is not a girl who does not fast," she breaks into a shy laughter. The picture in the markets is no different. A young, vibrant Aakanksha Sharma, a student of Punjab Engineering College has been fasting since eighth standard. "I feel you should always keep this fast because one day everyone gets married and has a husband, so why not start early," she says. "Plus, there should be something to tell him that you have waited for him," she adds, with a smile.

A few others keep it for their boyfriends. Fasting since the past four years, Devika Gupta's eyes light up when she talks about her sister's best friend, her boyfriend. "I am pretty sure we will get hitched," she laughs. "I get mehendi from Sector 22 and just love the entire feel of the festival," she says. For a few others, it's just been something that started and has made a pattern in their lives. For young Sakshi Bajaj, a second-year student of BA, it's been an easy task after she kept it six years back. "I put mehendi and enjoy dressing up; going for katha and wait for the moon," she says.

So, if it is a special someone you have been waiting for, this might be the right opportunity to emotionally create a connect!

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Date with tradition
Mona

This Saturday is a special one — some of the late-sleepers get up before the dawn breaks, foodies give up not only on food, but even water and the trendiest ones take pride in donning traditional attires. Well, it's Karva Chauth, progressives may label it whatever, but the festival has only gotten bigger with time. And how about women going on a shopping spree as their husbands (or would be) carry the bags?

Apparel outlook

So what if you have had the Karva Chauth ensemble in place, there is Diwali approaching and then Bhaiya Duj, and then there are many weddings that one has to attend! If a colourful, traditional sari is on your mind, head straight to Gurjari. On at Panchayat Bhawan-18, this Government of Gujarat's exhibition gets the bandhinis and gharcholas right from the land of colours. Available from Rs 3,000 onwards, pick up the traditional colour combinations — reds and yellows and blues.

If you are a suit person, Queen's Suits and Saris-7, Panchkula, has a lovely collection of Anarkali suits. "We have tied up with some young upcoming designers from Kolkata who have given us this really vibrant, new collection," says Naresh Gupta from Queen's. "We are also doling out special discounts for the Karva Chauth," he says.

Jewel deal

If your hubby dearest hasn't bought a present for you, big deal! Get dressed and head straight to favourite jeweller. Now that you fast whole day long, sure he wouldn't disappoint you by not buying the trinket you set your eyes on. Gold prices are hitting the roof, but smart jewellers have brought in gold in lesser carat, dainty designs and ranges to fit all pockets. Go ahead, splurge!

Sajana hai mujhe…

Of course, when the moon finally appears you should be looking no less. Various parlours are doling out attractive schemes. "We are offering one free service with each one that you avail," says Mahboob Khan from Tressed Up-9. Avail a free massage if you go for a haircut, bleach or facial, manicure if you book for pedicure and free top highlight if you go for hair colour.

If you are in a fix on your attire still, Priyanka Khosla, director, INIFD, offers a piece of advice, "Go slow on bling in dress and let makeup not be too loud. No wedding lenhaga for the Karva Chauth please," says Priyanka. "But, yes, indulge in mehandi as well as bangles," she suggests.

Watch your wrist
Keeping yourself away from luxury is difficult. We talk to people in the tricity who have a fetish for luxury watches
Sabia Talwar

Sometimes, luxuries flashed by people tend to cast a spell over others who notice them. Mostly, these include elegant and exclusive time machines, which look truly wonderful on one's wrist and are worth the cost as well.

And having this luxury piece gifted by someone for your birthday makes it completely priceless! Says Harsh Chopra, a Panchkula-based businessman, "I'm into buying luxury watches, as I feel they add to a man's personality. I already have in my collection FCUK and Tommy Hilfiger watches." He adds, "The new entry is a Tag Heuer watch, which my dad gifted on my twenty-first birthday. It costs around Rs 50,000 and I hope the collection keeps growing."

Buying a branded watch with one's own hard-earned salary is also a special feeling! Shares Ripul Grover, who is working for a private firm in Chandigarh, "When I started working, I always thought of buying good branded watches with my salary. I have a Tag Heuer, Fossil and recently I bought a Frank Republic." He adds, "I like to wear watches according to occasions and want to have a collection of at least twelve watches; that too with my own savings."

The only accessory a man can truly flaunt is a good wrist watch. Shares Jayanth Pathak, a Chandigarh-based banker, "I recently booked a Tag Heuer Carrera at Ethos for around Rs 2 lakhs. I already own an Omega C master and a Longines." A nice watch tends to complete a man's wardrobe and one should have a decent collection of watches, he opines.

So, where can you go looking out for such watches? Ethos, a Swiss watch studio in Sector-8, Chandigarh offers fashion brands like CK, Guess, Balmain and many more. Apart from these, there are high-end brands like Tag Heuer, Omega, Longines, Rado, Raymond Weil, Edox, Breitling, Louis Erard and Claude Bernard. Says Yashovardhan Saboo, CEO, Ethos Swiss watch studios, "We have watches ranging from Rs 7,000- Rs 5.5 lakhs. There is a fine mix of businessmen and young professionals who buy from us because we have both fashion and prestige segments." The real rationale behind the high cost of theses watches is that these go through multiple checks, very high quality material is used in them and all the processes are done by hand.

Shares Vinod, owner of Packards Time and Tune, Sector-17, Chandigarh, "We have around twenty brands of watches at our store, including Citizen, Rado, Tissot, CK, Police, Fossil, DKNY and the all-expensive Raymond Weil as well as Victorinox. There is a lot of demand from the locals as well as residents from nearby cities."

So, is it time for you to buy a luxury watch for your wrist?

Of sex and mama’s boys

Can teenagers' attachment to their mothers protect them from the negative impact of TV on their sexual attitudes?

It depends on their gender, according to a new study by Laura Vandenbosch and Steven Eggermont from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. For girls, a good relationship with moms is protective. For boys, however, a strong attachment with mothers increases the likelihood that they will have stereotypical sexual attitudes, as portrayed on TV, the journal Sex Roles reports.

Vandenbosch and Eggermont surveyed 1,026 sixteen-year-olds from nine schools in Belgium. They examined their recreational attitudes towards sex, according to a Katholieke statement.

For example, commitment to partner or views on casual sex, their attitudes towards traditional gender role norms, the amount of television they viewed over a week and their level of attachment to their mother.

On average, teenagers watched over 23 hours of TV a week, or more than three hours a day. Overall, boys and girls said they were rather satisfied with the relationship with their mothers. — IANS

Appetite vs hunger
Roopa Pahwa

People who struggle with their weight typically have problems managing appetite and hunger, and often confuse the two. Hunger and appetite are not synonyms. In fact, hunger and appetite are entirely different processes.

Hunger is the need for food. It is more of a process to drive you to eat because the body needs certain nutrients for maintaining life. It refers to physical discomfort caused by prolonged lack of food. One common sign is a rumbling stomach, including hunger pains or a "gnawing" feeling in the stomach, general tension, restlessness and 'light headed' feelings.

Appetite on the other hand is the desire or craving for food. It may be prompted by the sight or smell of food. So, we could say that appetite is generally an emotional drive, whereas hunger is considered a biological drive.

Shutting down the appetite is one sure way to lose weight permanently. You need to work slowly at reducing your appetite and need to start to listen to your body's hunger signals. However, if you cannot control your appetite, then you cannot control your weight. The more you eat, the more you will want to eat and you will start craving more and more food.

Ways to reduce appetite and control hunger

If you want to stay in full control of your appetite, and control your hunger, here are a few tips you should try:

n Replace your normal dinner plates with smaller ones. People will often eat all of what they're served, so use smaller plates if you are cutting calories. You will still feel like you have a full plate of food, but will be eating a lot less.

n Spice up your food. Spicy food makes you feel fuller. If you can't eat spicy foods, settle for more flavourful foods. Strong flavours satisfy the tastebuds, which signal to the appetite that it's being satisfied.

n Eat slowly. The brain actually takes ten minutes longer than the stomach to receive the message that it is full. Thus, eating too fast might cause you to eat beyond the point of fullness without even realising.

n Eat without distractions and concentrate on your food. Eating foods without the TV on, without the computer in front, is a good strategy to be aware of what we are eating. Mindless eating while distracted by another activity will often lead to eating more than you realise.

n Avoid taking second helpings. And the easiest way is to eat your food in thali style. Decide how much you want to eat. Serve up your plate with the correct portions in the kitchen and only eat that. Do not place platters of food on the table.

n Don't starve yourselves. Starving is the greatest enemy of healthy eating habits. It creates a feeling of energy deficiency and people try to eat more after periods of starving to "make up for the lost food". Nothing increases hunger/appetite more than starving for an extended period of time. Eating number of small meals a day is one way to avoid starving.

n Drink a lot of soup/broth before a meal. Vegetable/chicken broths are tasty and very easy to prepare. The key is to drink enough so that you almost start filling full and then proceed for the main course dishes.

n Drink a glass of water before every meal. It fills your stomach and gives you a sense of fullness, which in turn decreases your appetite. As water does not have any calories, it's ideal for people who are already over-weight and are controlling their appetite in order to lose weight.

n Eat food with low glycemic index. Food with high glycemic index cause a sudden rise and fall of blood sugar level. Typically, falling blood sugar levels trigger the 'need' to eat more food and that creates a sense of immediate hunger. Apples, bananas, green vegetables, and beans are some examples of foods with low glycemic index.

n Increase your dietary fibre and protein intake. Dietary fibre increases the feeling of "fullness" and suppresses appetite. On the other hand, foods higher in protein will take a lot longer for your body to break down, and this means that you're less likely to be hungry shortly after eating them.

n Chew on some sugarless chewing gum. Studies indicate that having chewing gum reduces hunger and controls appetite. This is because chewing gum may distract the mind from impulsive eating and curb appetite by offering oral satisfaction to the mind and taste buds.

stress buster
Get real
renee singh

We sat over a cup of Coffee at Barista, my friend and I, she wanted a general breather as her kids had just finished their exams and her stress levels needed some solid honing down. I thought the caffeine, the ambience and the chat should generally soothe her nerves until she said 'Phew, now I am going to be under the onslaught of another type of stress'. Coping with technology in her kids lives seemed to be next on the agenda.

In today's techno era kids are facing many challenges which we as children never needed to cope with, so, somehow I feel we ourselves need to get savvy on how to deal with this new techno era download.

My friend was just complaining, 'My 12 year old daughter never listens to me as she is constantly with some gizmo. Sometimes, she is emailing or on the phone texting, chatting on her cell blogging or some such thing. If I try talking to her she snaps back and is always irritable. I really don't know how to deal with this'.

Well aren't we all going through this anxiety laden situation all the time as parents. Stress over kids has become a constant part of our daily routine.

Technology is here to stay and upgrade itself constantly. It is upto us as parents to realise how to deal with our kids stress levels. Frankly, I personally feel that technology is wearing down our kids mentally, emotionally and physically.

Get rid of techno mania

Make appropriate choices

Kids should be exposed to technology in small doses so that they get a chance to learn how to handle it.

Do not allow them access to cell phones 24/7 at an early age.

Even Internet access should be time bound and monitored.

Set clear limits

No electronic devices at the table at meal times.

No cell phones during homework hours.

Give them a ten minute break during study time so that they go back rejuvenated to the study table and frankly you'll notice that they finish their work much faster.

Tell your kids to get a 'real life'

I know this is hard but kids need to balance their real life along with their techno existence. Interactions with family and friends are extremely important.

We are allowing our children to lose their touch with the real world by letting them have fun with their gadgets all the time. As parents help the kid lead a healthy stress free life in a happy zone.

Know when to shut down the fun

During vacations, I noticed my nephew having a tough time falling asleep as the lure of the video game was a constant temptation. He would lie in the bed after the lights shut off playing his games. I got home a puzzle and helped him with it. Now he has learnt to unwind with the puzzle and it makes him relaxed and sleepy in no time.

Kids no longer have to remain victims and at the mercy of what the environment throws at them. We have to facilitate them to handle techno stress and remain happy.

Action and reaction

Violent video games prompt aggressive behaviour

Does watching intense gunfights in video games prompt us to act more aggressively in real life?

The Norwegian killer is said to have played violent video games before he killed dozens of people in Oslo's government district and on the vacation island of Utoya earlier this year.

The shooting sprees in Erfurt, Emsdetten and Winnenden in Norway have revived the debate over whether violent games result in violent behaviour, the journal Biological Psychology reports.

"Compared to people who abstain from first-person shooters, they show clear differences in how emotions are controlled," reported Christian Montag from the Institute of Psychology, University of Bonn, (Germany) who led the study, according to a Bonn statement.

First-person shooters feature a first-person point of view with which the player sees the action through the eyes of the protagonist. The group of subjects aged between 20 and 30 years played first-person shooters for about 15 hours per week.

The researchers also recorded their responses using one of the brain scanners. The images included photos used in the violent games and also shots of accidents. When the subjects regarded the real, negative pictures, there was greatly increased activity in their amygdalas, a brain region involved in processing negative emotions. —ANS

Producing magic
Rahul Mittra, the producer of the film Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster, in Chandigarh, shares how the city is very close to his heart
Vasudha Gupta

So what if the costumes have not been designed by Neeta Lulla or Manish Malhotra? The crux of the story is that two weeks down the line, when bigger movies are falling apart, Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster is still doing a roaring business. "I anticipate that it should work well at least for the next five weeks," says Rahul Mittra, the producer of the film.

In Chandigarh to talk about the success of his film and give a sneak peek into his upcoming projects, he is at ease in the city he loves. "Chandigarh is very close to my heart. The culture, vibes and the dynamics of this place are conducive for a person like me," he smiles.

Going back to the film, he talks about the four basic elements, which worked for his movie. "I was very clear of not going overboard with my budgets," he says. Made in a humble budget, a lot of focus was on getting the grammar of the film correct. "I knew I hit the bull's eye with my title, the script, the art work and of course the promotions," he says. The film had hit the floors with only three songs and there is no doubting the fact that Jugni is still topping the charts.

"I was very particular that I needed something Punjabi in one of the songs and wanted Babbu Mann to do it. When I discussed the twisted Biwi with Jaidev and heard the initial cut a day later, I knew it will rule the roost," he says. The comparisons with the original Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam were obvious. Apart from the basic concept, nothing is the same. "The viewers have to understand that is a 30-40 year old concept; the dynamics of relationships have changed today," he says.

Ready with two scripts, he is excited to start working on them. "I will ensure the film is high on basics, rest everything is secondary," he informs us. While his untitled venture is a thriller, the other Jai Ram Ji Ki is an out-and-out 'gangster' film. "Randeep and one more big name will be the leads of the film," he winks. Who, the next obvious question? "I will tell you as soon as I freeze it," he smiles.

There are very few people who leave the city and never come back. "I hope to shoot it here," he says. "My school or Sector 17," he adds. Bringing the focus on dialogues, Mittra was certain to create the right mood in the film. Working with off-beat actors was more of a pleasure than a pain for this producer.

"The great thing about Trigmanshu Dhulia is that he creates the world around him. He was instrumental in making it easy for the actors to get under the characters' skin," he says. Inclined in making art with his heart, Rahul will ensure that he doesn't lose his focus in movie-making. "As long as my basics hit the bull's eye and I give the technicians their due, I know my kind of cinema, with twists, turns and sharp contrasts, will work," he says.

Here's hoping you treat your biwi right on Karva Chauth before she tosses and turns in the hands of a Gangster!

Wives of substance
From Kajol to Aishwarya, we take a look at what married actresses are doing these days

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

The married superstar is in a league of her own. She bagged the most glamorous film of her career, Heroine, well into her marriage and at the brink of her pregnancy. The stunner is heavily pregnant and has maintained quite a low profile. She only attends pujas with family members these days and covers herself in loose Indian outfits. She is due in November. The to-be mother lost Heroine when her pregnancy was revealed. She will be seen next in a romantic comedy with hubby Abhishek directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The Bachchan bahu is not only an actress and a star, she also looks into ABCL and has plenty of endorsement deals.

Kajol

The former Bollywood sweetheart is now mother to Nysa and Yug. Her last film was Toonpur Ka Superhero. She is very happy being a devoted mother, wife, and daughter. She does films as she pleases and only for her husband and best buddy Karan Johar. There is no news of what she is doing next.

Raveena Tandon

The pretty mother-of-two has been happily married to distributor Anil. She was recently in the news for her weight gain and subsequent loss. She tries to be stylish but doesn't quite get it right. The pretty woman was last seen in an item song (of sorts) and a short role in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap. She is making a full-fledged comeback opposite Sanjay Dutt in Alert, a psychological thriller.

Ayesha Takia

The effervescent powerhouse of talent is happily married to long-time beau Farhan Azmi. She doesn't care about being in the limelight and is enjoying taking part in his hotel business. The stork has not visited her yet. She does films as and when she pleases and will be seen in Nagesh Kukunoor's Mod this week.

Shilpa Shetty

The hottie with the hourglass figure is known for her business acumen. She has collaborated with a chain of spas, bought a cricket team, and invested in an international food chain (with hubby Raj Kundra). The style icon is a regular on the party and fashion circuit. She will be seen in Desire next and has a desire to be more active in films. There were rumours of her being pregnant but she squashed them.

Karisma Kapur

The beautiful actress is now mother to Samaira and Kiaan. Her marriage to businessman Sanjay Kapur hasn't been exactly rosy but she has stuck it out. She has never looked better or more radiant. The blue-eyed beauty has emerged as a style icon and endorses quite a few products and graces magazine covers regularly. She is a regular on the party and fashion circuit and has even judged a few television shows. The National Award winner is making her much-awaited comeback with an author-backed role in Vikram Bhatt's supernatural thriller, Dangerous Ishq. Rajneish Duggal is her co-star in it and she might also do the remake of Satte Pe Satta and an item song in Housefull 2.

Lara Dutta

The former beauty queen is heavily pregnant and due in January. She got married to beau Mahesh Bhupathi only last year and they run a production company called Bheegi Basanti. Chalo Dilli was her production. She is focusing on wellbeing and has launched a Yoga DVD with more to come. She has not announced her plans post her delivery.

A bigger wedding for Tanu, Manu

Shahid Kapoor might romance Kangna Ranaut in director Anand Rai's sequel to Tanu Weds Manu. Anand has been meeting him these days because he wants his film to be bigger and better than the first one. We didn't think much of the film, anyway.

When Fraaandship turned ugly

The cast and crew of Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge had a great time shooting for the film, but there was one person who was very upset with them. It was the librarian and it was because of a shot they had taken. Apparently, there was a shot inside the Symbiosis library where books had to fall off the shelves to create a dramatic effect. So, the crew threw all the books down to get the shot right. And the shot came out right. But the librarian got mighty pissed. Apparently it had taken him two years to catalogue the books and arrange them. —HRM

chatter box
Take off time

Flamboyant entrepreneur Vijay Mallya will soon be seen in the desi version of the TV reality show —The Apprentice. He will be playing the role that Donald Trump essayed in the original series. In the Indian version of the show, the shooting of which will start in November, he will not make loads of money but will get profitable airtime deal for his various companies. It sure will be interesting to watch Dr Mallya on TV.

For the real effect

Soon Ram (Ram Kapoor) and Priya Kapoor (Saakshi Tanwar), in Sony's Bade Achche Lagte Hain would head for Australia for their honeymoon. The channel plans to shoot in real locations to add value to the show. But the surprise is that the stepmother, Eva Grover too will accompany them to Australia. They will head to Australia in the first week of November.

In the pipeline

Producer Aroona Irani is planning to launch the second season of her hit Zee TV show Naaginn. She is working on an idea for the sequel and has put forth the same to the channel. Though it is confirmed that talks of Naagin 2 are on but the details, story and cast will soon be worked out.

Calling it quits

In a surprising move, the lead actress of Zee's Bhagonwali, Nivedita Tiwari will quit the show, now when the show airs at prime time 10.30 pm instead of early evening 6.30pm. Rumours are that the entry of Supriya Kumari as Nilu is the reason. The production house is looking for a replacement and is in talks with Ratan Rajput for the role.

Triple celebrations

The Star Plus show Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hai team celebrated the launch of their show and clubbed it with two other reasons to celebrate. Other than the launch of the show, production company Cinevistas also celebrated the success of Dil Dosti Dance and producer Sidharth Malhotra's birthday. Dressed in a white top and jeans Drashti Dhami aka Geet danced away to glory. She ruled the dance floor as she danced non-stop with Anju Mahendroo, Karan Tacker and Abhinav Shukla. She says, "I have worked with Abhinav and Anju ji who played Dev and dadi earlier on my show Geet. I wish the team of Ek Hazaron the best."

If your birthday is October 15...

Libran women born on this day are elegant, refined, vital and sweet. To win her love, give her lots of expensive and refined presents. You are very responsible and capable. You like harmony in your environment and strive to maintain it. The period till December will see company of friends and very interesting social maneuvers. Beyond that a dynamic phase commences, when you would no longer be willing to take any form of inefficiency and laxity. Hard work, focus and high mental energy will see progress in work as well as other aspects of life. This is a favourable time for matters of the heart. Reach out to someone who is feeling blue. Ask a fun-loving friend to join the festivities. Your communication skills can help smooth the waters in a heated discussion.
