Wedding in vogue
Since the season is on, we catch up with wedding planners on what rules this time….

One of the many venue options with traditional wedding themes

Elsewhere, it's an event; while In India, wedding is a season. Across the world, marriage is not a word but the proverbial sentence. While in India, it's a statement. Statement of who you are. And whoever wants to keep it subtle? For the loud and aloud school of thought, getting married is no 'mean' business. The wedding planners from the region give a low down on the latest.

For beginners, white is no more a taboo. "Earlier there was this Indian mindset of white not having anything to do with the wedding evening, but now that's' changing. The entire venue's base is kept white and then lighting is reflected to give it the desired colour. We also keep changing the hues throughout the evening, since it's just the lighting that's reflected heavily," shares Preeti Tholia, designer, with Wedding Seasons. There's too much to take care of and fitting in the traditional ceremonies in contemporary style is what figures the top of the list. Each season, the trends come in, go back, get rehashed and come back again. She adds, "There are people who want the royal wedding, then some want it the typical Bollywood way, it all depends on the clients' budget and needs. There are a lot many these days who want an Italian theme with extremely heavy floral work."

For most clients getting married is like getting harried. Laughs Guneet Singh, managing director, city based Absolute Perfection, "We have two kinds of clients, ones that demand a simple sophisticated wedding, others who want everything bling and bright. Though both are high end, their tastes vary widely. Once this crazy NRI client wanted elephants at the last moment." As for the fads for the upcoming wedding months, "People ask for choreographers from different places. Entertainment is always high on the minds, a lot many ask for famous Punjabi singers."

Many of the themes come back, others fade into oblivion, still some others spring from the past and evolve. Opines Shweta Arora, events manager with a city based wedding planner, "Each season, themes and trends come and go, but there are certain traditions and ways of celebrations that are constant. If we especially talk of the big fat Punjabi wedding, entertainment and bling factor remain constant." She adds, "For the receptions, Punjabi singers are a hit each season." Like we said, getting married is no mean business. Says Manmeet Singh, director of Wedding Bells, "This season a lot of experimental themes are in vogue especially for the pre-wedding nights. There's Sultan of Sixties, then Arabian touch theme for cocktail parties. In the London theme, we make a London bridge and the couple stage is like Buckingham Palace." Speak of the around the world wedding, he adds, "There's also Las Vegas theme for cocktail parties, in which we arrange for casino games, jacks and kings and queens." Shares Shweta, "Designing a venue is like constructing a house from scratch. There are far too many alternatives." Like we said, getting married is no mean business.

Speedy Sunday
Cannonball Club organises its second Supercar event in Chandigarh
Sabia Talwar

A plush red carpet spread on the ground, 15 to 20 luxury cars from Chandigarh and around drove in the hotel alley. The sound of the roaring engines of the speed machines made young boys curious and enthusiastic to put their hands on to the steering wheel for once. This was the scene at the CannonBall super car Sunday at Hotel JW Marriott -35, Chandigarh.

The man behind the club, Paritosh Gupta from Delhi says that the club started around three years back and around eighty speed car owners from all over India are a part of this club. He adds, "The inspiration behind the name of the club came from the classic movie, Cannonball Run, which was about cars. The main motto of this club is to bring together speed car owners in Chandigarh who share similar attitudes and go driving for fun."

Flashes of the camera made sounds for the perfect click, capturing the mean machines. Cameras on phone were equally busy. Models of Porche like Carrera S, 911, Boxster S, Ferrari, Audi, and Mercedes like SLK 200 were parked in line for the flag off, not for a race but for a safe drive around in the city.

Says Sandeep Wahid from Phagwara, "I have the only Porsche Carrera S in the lot and I think driving it is a different experience. The power is in my hands and I love driving on national highways." The ceramic brakes worth a ten lakh do make a difference for a car that costs Rs 1.5 crores.

On the other hand, a 24-year-old is totally in love with his car. Shares Vishal Goyal from Chandigarh, "My passion for cars only came up when I got my Audi TT sports car. Once you start feeling the rush you start knowing more about these mean machines." Car owners waited for the brief, the sound of the engines grew louder and faded away into the roads of the city.

With music in her genes, Anmol recorded her first song at a young age of eight for David Dhawan's Biwi No.1 and then for J P Dutta's Umrao Jaan, when she was 15.

"The film industry is open to newer talents. Everyone, be it a star kid or non-star kid, all are 0 here. There is space for everyone. It is your talent that matters the most," Anmol said in an interview.

Anmol, who has sung the hit number - Talli Main Talli Ho Gai from the movie Ugly aur Pagli, is set to follow her father's footsteps, as for her new song, Anmol has composed the music, written the lyrics and has also sung.

"This is not my comeback song. The idea came when I was in school. It was a rough draft then. When I went to England for further studies, I completed the composition of this song and made my father hear it. He liked and instantly decided to produce the song," Anmol said. — PTI

Single and loving it
Bipasha Basu
Bong shell: Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu is happily leading her single life. She talks about her movies, her co-stars, and people she finds sexy.

A role you wish you would have done…

I really like Priyanka's work in most of her films so I am very fond of her. She's a fine actress.

Over-rated actress according to you?

I think everyone gets fame according to their talent.

Your favourite Bollywood real-life couple?

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.

The worst Hindi film you've seen lately?

I don't want to upset anyone but I recently watched Ishq Hai Tumse and it's my film only but I hated it, it's terrible but still my audience loves me which is a good thing.

Favorite co-star?

Everyone is sweet and very helpful. Recently, I was shooting for Players with so many male stars: Abhishek, Neil, Omi and they all were just pampering me like I was their child. It is one of the most memorable films I have ever done. Apart from them, Ranbir Kapoor is a lot of fun to work with.

Best style icon?

I think Sonam Kapoor, no one can beat her when it comes to style. She has an elegant look and she carries herself very nicely and is very particular about style. She has got a great face and she looks amazing. She has a child-like image so I wish she dresses her age, a little younger.

Bollywood's sexiest actor?

There are so many. I just I hope I don't miss out any name. SRK is the king of Bollywood and he is very cute, so are Imran Khan and Shahid Kapoor.

Cold war

Everytime whenever PC is with media, she is always asked one question and that's about her competitor Kareena Kapoor, so even this time when asked about Kareena Kapoor, and whether they were friends or not she said, "Kareena and I were never friends; we did hang out together but besides that nothing much."

Truth and dare

Asin with Simi Garewal Salman Khan asked Asin to eat a bug as a part of his prank on her. Recently, one of the most loved hosts of Indian television, Simi Garewal put actress Asin Thottukmal on the grill.

The actress told the host how she feels lucky to have starred with the reigning Khans of Bollywood - Aamir and Salman. And also how Salman challenged her to eat a bug during the shooting of one of the films. A challenging case of truth and dare, shall we say?

Proud to be a veggie!
Veena Malik
Going green: Veena Malik

Looking ravishing in a designer blouse and posing next to the words "I am Veena Malik, and I am a vegetarian", sultry Pakistani actor Veena Malik appears in a brand-new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to be released in October, which is celebrated as Vegetarian Awareness Month around the world.

"Going vegetarian is one of the smartest decisions I've ever made", says Malik, who won her first style award in 2007 for being the most stylish celebrity on the red carpet. "I feel better, I'm healthier and I have the satisfaction of knowing that my food choices also help protect animals and the environment."

Last October, Malik appeared in the Indian television reality show Bigg Boss and was one of the final six contestants. In February 2011, she served as captain of her team on the Cricket World Cup reality show Bigg Toss and faced off against Rakhi Sawant and her team. Malik will soon mark a milestone in her career when she makes her Bollywood debut in the film Daal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai.

Vegetarians are, on an average, fitter and trimmer than meat-eaters, so the best thing that people who want to look their best can do is to keep meat off their plates. Also, vegetarians are less likely to be afflicted with heart diseases, diabetes and cancer - all of which are major health problems in India.

Going vegetarian is also the kindest gift that you can give to Mother Earth. A recent UN report concluded that a global shift towards a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. And, of course, meat is murder of animals. Every vegetarian saves the lives of approximately 100 animals each year.

Malik joins a growing list of actors, athletes and other celebrities - including Lara Dutta, Shahid Kapoor, Pankaj Advani, Anil Kumble, Amrita Rao, R Madhavan, Murali Kartik, Rahul Sharma and Monica Dogra - who have starred in pro-vegetarian ads for PETA India.

Over to Cruise
Tom Cruise
Immortal star: Tom Cruise

Hollywood star Tom Cruise is reportedly all set to play the lead in a big-budget sci-fi war project, We Mortals Are. The film which was previously known as All You Need Is Kill is being produced by Warner Brothers and prior to Cruise the role was offered to Brad Pitt, a publication reported.

"The studios are interested in him again," a producer said. Last month, the production house wanted Pitt along with his Mr and Mrs Smith director Doug Liman but the plan did not go through. Pitt was reportedly in dilemma whether to accept the role because the studio also wants him to be in The Mission. Cruise will play a young Army recruit who dies on the battlefield against an alien invasion. The film is based on the Japanese manga by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and would be released in 2013.

Colours, contrast and bling

The Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) kickstarted with a heady mix of colour, contrast and bling for the modern woman. The first show of the day saw collections by female designers Nandita Basu, Malini Ramani and duo Gauri-Nainika.

Unlike the past seasons, where the first show attracted fewer people, this edition has witnessed a large crowd. People were seen waiting outside the main show area (MSA). The venue at Pragati Maidan was decorated with mannequins and cartoon characters, installed to grab the eyeballs of those who were outside MSA.

Gauri-Nainika, who are known for their feminine gowns, started the spring-summer 2012 edition of the fashion extravaganza, with creations in colours like red, purple, olive, plum and jade green. Model Sapna Kumar started the presentation with a Romper dress. Models then sashayed on the runway wearing high-waist jumpsuits, halter-neck jumpers, full-length skirts and even fish-cut gowns. "Inspired by the European fashion history, art, music, books, old Hollywood and red carpet glamour, we always go for extremely feminine and romantic design philosophy with styles that are luxurious and understated," said the designer.

Apara Mehta speaks fashion
Fashionista: Apara Mehta
Fashionista: Apara Mehta

Famous for her role in classic series Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Apara Mehta loves shopping and has her own individual sense of fashion. She has even played a role of fashion designer in one her plays called Aaye Dur Se Milne Huzur. We caught up with Apara to talk about fashion.

Fashion to me…

…is being myself. I like to have my own style and somewhat I’ve been successful in that. I have my own style of dressing. I don’t really believe in trends or copy what others are wearing. I buy what I love.

My favourite shopping destination

Every year, I am in USA for at least 45 days out of which I have to work 40 days. Still, I make sure that I have enough time to go out and check different stores. I know all stores. In fact, I know about the stores more than locals. It often surprises them. But that’s where I have been shopping for years, which is how I know the best places.

Not brand conscious

I am not concerned about brands at all. I don’t think it really makes a difference to wear branded stuff as long as it’s looking good on you. I never look at the cost while buying. Regardless of it’s a Rs 200 salwar or Rs 2000, if it fits and compliments me, I buy it.

I design my own stuff

I am not much of a designer person. I design my own kurtas and salwar-kameez. I am often in Ahmadabad and Surat. That’s where I usually shop for fabrics for my clothes and get them stitched from my own tailor.

My usual outfits

Because of my Gujurati background, I am very ethnic as you always see me in ethnic clothes. My usual outfits are saris, salwar-kameez, and denims. In fact, I’ve more denims than my daughter. I keep shopping for more and more. — HRM.

If your birthday is October 10...

Your birth on the 10th day of October shows tone of independence and extra energy to your life path. The number one energy suggests more executive ability and leadership qualities. This one energy may diminish your ability and desire to handle details, preferring instead to paint with a broad brush. You are sensitive, but your feelings stay somewhat repressed. You have a compelling manner that can be dominating in many situations. You’ll be tempted to say what you think to a rival. Watch your tone and try to act in a responsible way. If you still haven’t met the right person, this is an excellent time for opportunities and you’ll start a long term relationship. You’ll receive unexpected praise and bring about huge changes in your day-to-day life, thanks to the favorable position of the stars. Don’t let your lover’s bad mood affect you and try to calm the situation down. Make a real effort to compartmentalize; apply yourself when you’re working and really let it go when you’re not. Exercise as a transition time helps. Keep major goals, both personal and work-related. As problems arise, you will be forced to use your own imagination.  The person that you usually rely on when you are in a pinch might not be available to help you.  Carefully consider all pros and cons before signing anything! You appear to have several good opportunities. Spending will go on the rise. Vehicle repair or purchase along with travel expense is a likely source. October will open up some lucrative opportunities with attractive financial possibilities. If you are planning to buy a studio or premises of your own, it will now be easier to arrange for loan, which can supplement your savings. Health wise, it is time of abdominal disorders, eye infection or dental problems. Later you would discover yourself and make certain resolution. You need to take care of your health as slight headache, fever or such minor problems are in store for you. Your best chances for romance come in little private places or out-of-the-way situations where you and a partner can enjoy quiet time together. Mood: Emotional but happy. Compatible signs: Gemini and Virgo. Lucky Colors: Burgundy and Maroon. Lucky days: Tuesday and Thursday. Lucky Numbers: 2, 10, 12, 15, 25. Lucky flower: Sunflower. Lucky gem: Cat’s Eye.

Rekha (Bhanurekha Ganesan October 10, 1954) shakes to inform that number 10 is common with you.
