All about nosey neighbours

A research has revealed that most of us see our neighbours as nosey, too chatty and people who always steal parking spaces, but the biggest complaint involves them making noise at unsociable hours.

According to the survey of 2,000 people carried out for HSBC, around a quarter of homeowners become irritated when someone plays loud music or a musical instrument within earshot of their abodes.

Although many of us like to chat, nearly one in five find their neighbours a little bit too nosey. The same number gets aggrieved when they return home to discover their favourite car parking spaces are occupied.

The survey also reveals that another major nuisance is the children next door. Roughly, one in six are unhappy with the noise and games played by their neighbours’ children, and their pets are a source of irritation, too.

"We can choose our friends but one thing we have little control over is who moves in next door to us," the Daily Mail quoted HSBC’s head of lending Martjn Van Der Heijden as saying. While some people choose to strike a friendship up with their neighbours, living in close proximity can also cause its fair share of irritations.

However, there are a number of ways to settle these problems, including the help of an independent mediator, adds Heijden. — ANI
