Imran Khan is quite excited about his latest release Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, which also stars Katrina Kaif and Pakistani singer Ali Zafar.
"I play the role of Khush Agnihotri. I could easily relate to Khush, who is a boy from a simple middle class family in Dehradun. Ali Zafar, who is my elder brother in the film, is extremely stylish, charming, and out and out a ladies’ man. In the film, he is in search of a nice girl, whom he wants to marry following a break-up in London, where he was staying. It is a comedy of errors, like, say, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Chupke Chupke, or Rajkumar Santoshi’s Andaz Apna Apna." According to Imran, he prepared for his role of Khush Agnihotri by observing the director Ali Abbas Zafar, who, incidentally, is also a bachelor and has a brother. "Interestingly, Ali Abbas Zafar is also very keen on searching for a bride for his elder brother." "It helps if you do rehearsals before shooting for the film. Since Katrina was not available for rehearsals before the shooting began, I made it a point to rehearse with Ali as well as my other friends on the sets, when we were shooting in Pataudi, the scenes which did not require Katrina to be with me. Luckily, Kat came to Pataudi two days before we started shooting her scenes in the film and I could rehearse my scenes with her before we actually shot them." As far as his performance goes, Imran concedes that though normally he is called upon to underplay his characters on screen as an actor, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is one film that needed him to be loud, almost to the point of being theatrical. "Right at the outset, Ali Zafar Abbas told me that it would be interesting to make my character different from the kind of characters that I had played till date. To tell you the truth, I was quite skeptical whether I would be able to do it the way Ali Abbas Zafar wanted me to do it. He helped me delineating my role in an entirely different style as an actor, though I had my own share of fears in the beginning when I set out to get into the skin of my character." Imran does not mind experimenting working with new directors. Imran confesses that out of the eight films in which he has worked, six have been helmed by first-time directors. If Abbas Tyrewala directed his first film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Puneet Malhotra directed I Hate Luv Stories. If Danish Aslam directed Break Ke Baad, Abhinay Deo directed Delhi Belly. If Ali Zafar Abbas has directed Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Shakun Batra is directing his next release Short Term Shaadi. Imran admits that like his uncle Aamir, he, too, would like to take up direction when he feels time is ripe for him to take the step. According to Imran, "a first-time filmmaker has a raging passion to prove himself. I feel that we actors, who are in a position to support new directors, should come forward to support them. With an all-time hit film like Delhi Belly behind me, I am glad that I am ncccow in a position to support a new director. As an actor, I like to experiment by working in commercial as well as experimental films. It is my good luck that even if I do an experimental film, it ends up as a commercial success like, say, Delhi Belly. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is out and out a commercial film." Imran denies that he has lampooned the Khans in a sequence in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. All three Khans — Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan — have been inspiring us for the past 20 years with their films. With a song in our film, we have actually made an attempt to salute the Khans. In the song, I mimic each of the Khans, as far as their style of dancing is concerned." Imran confesses that he still continues to have butterflies in his stomach before his film is released. "I feel the day you are not afraid as an actor, it only means that you will stop working and start getting stagnated in your career."
