2 killed in mishaps
Ambala, September 22 He was coming from the Sadar Bazar on his motorcycle when he met with the accident. According to eyewitnesses, the driver was driving rashly on the wrong side of the road. The car dragged the motorcycle several metres. The driver of the car and the woman accompanying him fled, leaving the car behind. Sandeep suffered head injuries and was rushed to the Civil Hospital at Ambala Cantonment. Doctors referred him to the PGI in Chandigarh, but he died on the way. A case was registered. Sandeep was staying in the staff quarters of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, where his wife Madhubala worked as teacher. In the other mishap, Baljit Singh of Badi Rasaur village, a security guard with a factory at Kala Amb, died on the spot when a truck hit him on the Naraingarh-Nahan road. Panchkula: A 55-year-old resident of Saketri was killed when a vehicle hit him here on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Sahu Baba. He had a shop near the Mansa Devi temple. He was on his two-wheeler when the vehicle, which could not be identified, hit him near the Parade Ground at Sector 5. He was taken to the General Hospital at Sector 6, where he was declared brought dead. |
Fresh case against Healthyway owner
Chandigarh, September 22 This is the 10th case registered against owners of Healthyway Immigrations. DSP Anil Joshi said the case was registered after scores of complainants approached them after the booking of Kakkar in a similar fraud case. The total amount of fraud is estimated at over Rs 30 lakh. All complainants alleged that they were duped by the company on false promises of easy migration overseas. The UT Police will now move an application in the court seeking his police custody again. |

Ransom call-cum-firing case cracked
Panchkula, September 22 The accused, identified as Atul Verma and Sachin, were allegedly members of the gang of Kuldeep Singh, alias Manga. Manga was lodged at the Ambala jail for the murder of a notorious gangster. Addressing a press conference, Panchkula SP Maneesh Chaudhary said Atul of Surajpur and and Sachin of Maheshnagar at Ambala Cantonment had confessed that they were directed by Manga and another gangster, Surinder Ganja, to fire upon the car. Surinder was also lodged at the Ambala jail. Surinder was Sachin’s neighbour and they were in touch over phone. Atul had served a sentence in a cheque-bounce case at the Ambala jail and came out about six months ago. He was known to Manga and came in contact with Surinder in jail. A few days ago, Atul received a phone call from Surinder and Manga, who asked him to fire upon the builder. After this, Sachin met Atul. Riding Sachin’s Pulsar motorcycle, they reached Bhalla’s house, where Atul fired upon the car.

Dilip overcomes Rajat in snooker
Chandigarh, September 22 Dilip defeated Rajat 3-4. Rajat after winning the first frame by 35-31 went down in the second and third frame by 31-5 and 41-0, while in the fourth frame, Rajat win with a break of 36 to win 45-0 and in the fifth frame, Rajat lost at black by 36-24. In the sixth frame, Rajat again played with touch and potted well to win 59-6, but in the last and final frame, Dilip overcame the rival easily. Chandigarh, September 22 In the first match of the day, PCC defeated IOC by 102 runs at GMSSS, Sector 26, to top the pool. Batting first, PCC scored 376 for six in 50 overs. Openers Ishan Malhotra and Ravi Inder contributed 92 runs for the first wicket before Ravi Inder got out on an individual score of 37 runs. Ishan Malhotra partnered with Karan Goel to made a 82-run partnership for the second wicket before Ishan Malhotra was bowled out by left arm spinner Vinay Chaudhary after scoring a 116 off 90 studded with 11 boundaries and seven lofty sixes. Organise tourneys to popularise snooker: Alok
Chandigarh, September 22 In the city to play the ongoing six-red ball nationals, the spiky striker of the table ball, who won the Asian Billiards Champion in April this year, said it was the right time to uplift the game by organising various competitions. “The country has a lot of talent. All one needs is to find and polish that and there is a need to increase the standard of the game also by organising the shorter version,” said Alok Kumar. In the recently held Asian Championship at Iran, the second rank holder defeated Pankaj Advani in the quarterfinal stage. He also got the better of Peter Gilchrist of Singapore and Praprut of Thailand in the semifinals and final of the tournament, respectively. Alok is a six-time national snooker champion, four-time national billiards champion and has also won the pool game thrice. Earlier, he has bagged the title of Asian Snooker Championship in 2004 and also won a silver medal in billiards at the Busan Asian Games, including bronze medals in the World Snooker Championship (2006) and Indo-Asian Games in 2007. The player, who lives in Mandi Gobindgarh (Punjab), said India lacked specialised pool players. “There is a need to increase the number of tournaments, especially in the northern belt of the country, to popularise the game. Being the secretary of Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association, we are also planning to organise various tournaments to increase the level of game,” said the champion. |
