SUCCESS MANTRA Mona Manmohan Lal Sarin is a known name in law circles. Practicing senior advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh, Sarin has been Advocate General of Punjab as well as that of Haryana. He has earned esteem not only as a lawyer, but also as a social worker and cultural ambassador. As part of various international conventions, he has read papers at various conferences in different parts of the world. He has co-authored various books on topics such as rent restrictions, Hindu Marriage Act, Petroleum Laws and Compulsory Acquisition of Land in India. Sarin has also been active as the editor of a number of law journals. He is the founder-secretary of the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation, Chandigarh, which was set up in 1995 for spreading legal literacy. Sarin has been closely associated with Alliance Francaise Le Corbusier de Chandigarh, St John's Old Boys Association and Blood Bank Society, Chandigarh. "Being the son of a successful lawyer who worked 18 hours a day, I, as a youngster, used to swear that I will never become a lawyer," he says. But a meeting with BRL Iyenger, senior advocate, in the 1960s, changed his mind. "According to Iyenger, every case is a new challenge, a different battle and every judge treats it differently," he recollects. Today, he is happy that he took up law as his profession. "In law, it's satisfying that one is one's own master; can choose the kind of work one likes to do and one gets to meet people from all walks of life as clients - politicians, businessmen, students, rulers and, yes, even judges," he says. In his remarkable innings, he considers having become Advocate General for both Punjab and Haryana as a very satisfying experience. He shares the five mantras that will help any lawyer succeed. Work hard: To succeed in a legal battle, one has to be thoroughly prepared. Hardwork is the first pre-requisite to becoming a successful lawyer. Sincerity: We work closely with clients and it's sincerity that matters a lot. Honesty: Honesty towards the court is something that needs to be taken very seriously. Law as a service: Law is one field that needs to be considered a service rather than a source of livelihood. And one needs to give the best possible to every case. Professional ethics: Not looking for monetary gain in the initial stages of the profession is important. Once established, the rewards come automatically. Following professional ethics and not taking to short-cuts is extremely important. mona@tribunemail.com |

POETRY IN MOTION...
Each time Saleem Arif comes up with a production, the idea is to reconfirm the conventionalist's approach to theatre — interspersing drama with poetry and prose. To make it happen in the best possible way, he turns to the best in the field, Gulzar. And this time, what he has brought to the Chandigarh Theatre Festival is Lakeerein, seven poems by Gulzar that mirror the evolving relationship between people of India and Pakistan. Each poem is thematically linked to make it a complete story!
"That's the beauty of Gulzar's poetry. He beautifully presents the inherent relationship between poetry and drama — a combination that has been replaced by drama and prose," Saleem is quick to share his observation. "Language is very important for theatre, but unfortunately we have lost it. What now exist are hollow dialogues that are unable to bring out the feel of the play's subject and expressions of the characters." The trends in contemporary theatre are attributed to Western influences, wherein plays are adapted as it is and just translated. "Since it's not easy to rhyme words while translating English poetry plays into Hindi, simple lines are written. In poetry, there is so much to read between the lines," says Saleem, who was accompanied by actor-wife Lubhna Saleem and actor Yashpal. Coming to Lakeerein, the play is divided into three parts but is joined well by Seema Singh's ghazals. The first story is inspired by the 1965 Indo-Pak war — how two friends grow up on the different sides of the border and then work for the armies of their respective countries. The second story is Peer Sahib, which is based on the experiences of Kuldip Nayyar during the Partition of India. The third story has a modern-day angle — it's about how people and soldiers who live in the two countries lead their lives. "The play is a journey of our thought-process - from finding it extremely difficult to accept the harsh reality of Partition to the existence of two rival nations," says Lubhna. While Lubhna keeps herself busy with TV productions and commercials, besides theatre productions, Saleem turns to what he is expert at — designing sets, studios and backdrops. He has to his credit flicks like Guru, Maachis, Gadar, Hu Tu Tu et al. The number of projects have been less though, "From all that I have been offered, I picked up only those projects that challenged my creativity; helped me graduate to the next level of designing," which is natural for someone who began his career with mega-projects like Ghalib and Bharat Ek Khoj. Thus, at present, he is only doing Chanakya, a period drama that requires sets with a look that is larger than life. jasmine@tribunemail.com
Nothing theatrical
When the subject is Gulzar's poetry, the approach has to be really measured. "Every line you say, every expression you give, every gesture you make has to complement the poetic expression," says actor Yashpal Sharma. When to restrict the actor inside and when to let it go — the transition has to be very smooth. Yashpal realised it the moment he went through the script of Lakeerein. "To act on poetry is the toughest test for any artiste. And when it comes to poetry by Gulzaar, it gets all the more challenging. It doesn't need an actor in the first place to make the audience feel the emotions of the poet." So, when it happens, Yashpal restricts the actor inside him, but there is no denying the fact that stage gives him better creative satisfaction. "Films do justice to my ability. They help me experiment with my way of acting. Theatre gives me flexibility." The reason he hasn't been a part of many Bollywood projects! |

Women wearing skirts are perceived as more successful than those sporting trousers favoured by the likes of Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel, a research suggests.
They seem to be the attire of the high-flying career businesswoman, but trouser suits don't seem to be best way to make a favourable first impression. Research has revealed women who wear skirts and jackets are viewed as more confident, higher-earning and more savvy than their trouser sporting peer, the Telegraph reports. Scientists also found that opinions of others, based purely on the clothes they are wearing, are formed within seconds of first meeting. Karen Pine, a psychologist who co-led the research at the University of Hertfordshire, said: "We make rapid judgments about people within the first few seconds of meeting them based on their clothing. "It was surprising that the skirt suit elicited more favourable attributes than the trouser suit as other studies have suggested that women who dress in a more masculine style were perceived as having greater professional status." "What we found suggests women can still dress in a feminine way yet still be perceived as confident and successful. The skirt suit seems to balance professionalism with attractiveness," concluded Professor Pine.

Celeb point Divya Dutta And my phone hasn't stopped ringing. Badi sunder lag rahi hai, badi acchhi hosting ki…" I hear everyone say and I am loving it! Life is also full of surprises. It gives you something when you least expect it. I was watching KBC and wondered how I'd love to be a quiz mistress too! And in about two days, I got a call from Sony Max to host Bollywood quiz for them. I thought and then I thought again, 'what was there to think about'? This is what I want to do. I am a film buff and so is most of India. So what can get better than this? So, I said yes. And the tayyari started. Kapde kya honge? Make-up kaisa hoga? Set kaise banenge, what will be the rounds? Before I knew I was on the set, shooting! All the team members were in my vanity room to check the look of their quiz hostess. They seemed pleased. I still wasn't sure. Is this outfit good enough? I mumbled like an actress who needed assurance. And then it was time to play the game. I was having a ball. Enjoying playing with the participants, having masti, pulling them up and making them comfortable if they were nervous - it felt great. By the end of the day I realised I needed a super doze of energy to constantly stand, be chirpy and talk constantly. But it was fun. And before I knew, we were visiting cities to promote the show, interacting with journos. I did what I had not done before, travelling two cities in a single day. Literally living out of a suitcase-press conferences, photoshoots, visits, I didn't have time to breathe! As I landed in Mumbai, I got a call from a big director, "Have you seen your big hoarding in a red sari? I said no. He said it's ravishing. You have never looked better. And then it didn't stop - phone calls and smses were pouring in. Everyone called to say how lovely the hoarding was. I have been often praised for my work and also for being cute looking. Words like ravishing, gorgeous, stunning never came my way until now. They were welcome but yet I needed to get used to them. I got embarrassed like a school girl. Having received so much love from the audience and critics, I am now getting used to the adulation. Guess, some one up there had planned my life backwards and I am so thankful. As I see my life-size hoarding in a red sari, saying watch Xtraaa Shots challenge on Sony Max every Sunday, I have my hands folded because I know someone up there is smiling at me. The soap story
When it comes to your body, a lot of thought goes into what to use. The skin, perhaps, is the most sensitive part and that is the precise reason why there is a marked shift from soaps to body washes and shower gels.
We wonder how safe these are for the most sensitive part of the body - the skin. "Body washes are totally safe because they are low in detergent content as compared to soaps. They have a PH content of 5.5, which is required for the skin." She adds, "There are a range of body washes and shower gels of various brands available in the market and one can pick up any, but those who are allergic to flavours or smells should avoid using them or just get a mild one," says Maleeka Sachdev, a dermatologist in Sector 18, Chandigarh. Soaps generally make your skin dry, so using body washes can be a better option. Shares Megha Bajaj, a Chandigarh-based model, "I use body scrubs like Eternity Moment by CK and Body Shop body washes in cherry blossom, tea tree, grapefruit and papaya flavours. They have natural ingredients and no harsh chemicals." She adds, "I prefer them over soaps as they are gentle on the skin and keep it soft." The reasons don't end here. Says Namrita Sehgal, partner in a Chandigarh-based company, "I switched on to body washes because they are more hygienic and have an excellent aroma. My favourites are Victoria Beckham, Next, Body Shop, Marks and Spencer, and Boots." Products arranged in a manner that provide a different ambience to your bathroom are surely welcome. Aesthetics do matter, after all! Shares, Geetika Sharma, a Chandigarh-based housewife, "A variety of body washes and shower gels also decorate my bathroom; I love to keep them in wooden trays along with scented candles and artificial flowers. These are gentle on the skin and provide a wonderful aroma. I generally buy LUX and Body Shop body washes." At the same time, some suggest using a combination of soaps and body washes. Says Salochna Ahuja, a leading beautician in Sector-8, Chandigarh, "Body washes should be used, but along with soaps. As body washes are cream-based, they are safe to use. There is a varied choice in the market; picking one totally depends on your skin type." So, is it time to bid adieu to
soaps?

Festive eye
Capturing the colours of the Hola Mohalla festival with his lens for the last 13 years — devotion of the visitors, mock drills by Nihang Sikhs and the sumptuous langar — Maninder Singh Sodhi, a mechanical engineer from Ambala, is living his passion for photography.
The three-day Sikh festival is celebrated at the Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, every year. The festival was started by Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth Sikh guru, in 1701. "Since childhood, I was into photography and my father was a great inspiration. He was awarded by the President of India for excellence in photography," says Maninder. He adds, "Slowly it became a passion with me and the festival really fascinated me. I could not miss capturing and showcasing it." The photo exhibition portrays varied elements of the Sikh traditions and minute details have been highlighted. Among the works are - The Daredevil, where a Nihang Sikh performs a stunt on a running motorcycle, Seva, a tribute to selfless service and Arrival of the Punj Pyaras. Says Maninder, "I'm very careful in choosing my photographs and prioritise keeping the 'human' factor in mind." The sensitive issue of equality for women in society is also shown through his frames. The Khanda holds special significance for the Sikh community and a frame explains that it is a combination of three symbols. A double-edged sword, which signifies the knowledge of God; a chakkar that stands for eternal nature of the Almighty and two swords on each side - depicting political sovereignty Miri(left) and spiritual sovereignty Piri (right). Some photographs have people playing with dry colours such as those used during Holi, which stress the point that all religions are equal. "I'm just depicting the rich cultural heritage and tradition of India. I want to send a cultural message across the country as well as abroad," shares the avid photographer. Get absorbed in the colours of joy and humanity! sabiatalwar@gmail.com (On till September 26)

Master
Chef Kandla Nijhowne A column discussing lentils and legumes? Don't let your brow furrow with a frown! I know it sounds as boring as skimmed milk but there are ways to cook the everyday daal into something quite exotic. Lentils provide us with good amounts of nutrition but most kids don't exactly love daals with a passion. Cooked lentils make a delightfully tangy salad when combined with shredded veggies, chaat-masala and lemon juice. When I baked lentils into this saucy, nutty loaf, my children ate it without batting an eyelid. You could also add odd oats for fibre and melonseeds for crunch. Give it a shot. It's a dish fit for a party. Baked lentil loaf

Spa-tial treat
Steam sauna, mineral water pool, ice therapy, aromatic massages and pebble walk. These are common therapies at spas.
But when these are for the asking inside an airport, overlooking the apron, it's a delight for jet lagged passengers. Crafted by celebrated German designer Paul Haslauer is such a spa at Vantaa Airport here where Finnair's business and first class passengers get free access while others too can use the services by paying a fee. "We have combined natural elements of ice, steam, mineral water and pine needles with scientific methods to come up with this first-of-its kind airport Spa," Markku Remes, customer experience development manager, Finnair, said. "We also have a variety of therapies here-from Finnish saunas and ice baths to icy water walk, steam baths and also a mineral water pool to soothe your aching joints and muscles after the stress of a long-haul flight that just vanishes," Remes said. "You can, in fact, experience the freshness of Finland's natural environment here. You have the pleasing scent of pine twigs, the glitter of ice, the lapping of water and the unforgettable swish of birch branches and leaves in the sauna." Spread over 1,600 square metres, the Via Spa, as it is called, is the main attraction at the new terminal at Vantaa Airport, built by its operator Finavia with support from flag carrier Finnair. The opening had coincided with Finnair's 85th anniversary in late 2009. The spa also offers new generation naturopathic treatments and all its products are made using pure, organic ingredients. Treatments include facials, rasul, reflexology, hamam and one specifically for jet lag. "The Via Spa environment is unique in the airport world," said Kari Stolbow, Finnair's director for the Indian subcontinent. "There is also this spectacular view of the taxiway over a mineral water pool to see flights go past," Stolbow added. According to Remes, the spa is so soothing that a number of passengers fall asleep. "We manage to wake most of them. For others, we have a ticket counter right there to take the next possible flight," he joked. Finnair's chief executive Mika Vehvilainen said that they would like to see similar spas at other airports as well, including India. "But it's really up to the Indian companies like Delhi airport to look into it."

star track A bevy of beauties has been making appearances around Mumbai. While Kareena danced in a red sari to Chhammak Chhallo, super-stylish Sonam attended a press conference and others just showed up at various events. We do a fashion round-up
Red alert
Kareena Kapoor: This Chhammak Chhallo has studs eating out of her hands. Super sexy Kareena looks sensational in her dazzling red saree. She is stunning and she knows it! Golden earrings, bangles, and a kamarbandh complete her desi look and make her look very sexy. Even though the pallu drape doesn’t cover her assets, she pulls it off and doesn’t look cheap.
Second time lucky
Mere Brother Ki Dulhan may or may not have become a hit but Ali Zafar has walked away with accolades. The powerhouse of talent from across the border talks about his journey and his next film. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan
I was happy to know that audiences liked the film as it is a complete entertainer. Whoever gets frustrated or angry during the whole week can come and enjoy the film as it’s a light entertainer and the film takes various turns till the end. I received many calls from people in the industry saying they loved my role and acting. I am very happy with the response. The great YRF tag
When I was signed for this film, I was very excited and during that time I met Adi sir (Aditya Chopra) and he showed a special interest in me. He said he knew I was talented and he loved my previous film, Tere Bin Laden. So it was a nice experience working with Yash Raj Films. London, Paris, New York…
It’s a film produced by Shrishti Arya and directed by newcomer director Anu Menon. It’s a story of two people: Nikhil and Lalitha (Aditi Rao Hyadri) who come from totally different backgrounds and are completely different individuals but get attracted to each other despite their differences or perhaps because of them. We are shooting in London, Paris, and New York. It’s basically a love story and shows the romance as well as the suffering and pain in heartbreak. Getting intimate
It is a love story so there are intimate scenes. The scenes show the love between the characters and were definitely needed in the script. They are not vulgar sex scenes. Journey called life
My life itself was an inspiration to me. You must be thinking that I am lucky to get my second release with YRF but I have been on an artistic platform for more than ten years. When I was 18-years-old I started making portraits for a hotel’s lobby. I use to get Rs.500 per portrait. Using that money, I bought my first keyboard. Then I entered the music industry and I was lucky to meet the right people and get the correct work. Bollywood was always there on my mind, I always dreamt about entering this industry. B-town residents
Every hero and heroine here is really good and each one has its strengths. Recently, when I was in London, I met Priyanka Chopra. She was so sweet and I discovered she loves singing and we share some common interests. Working with Katrina was a different experience and we bonded a lot. I am a big fan of Madhubala and Madhuri Dixit. I hope I get a chance to meet Madhuri Dixit someday. London, Paris , New York will release in

How I met your parents
Nargis Fakhri is one of the most talked about debutants in Bollywoood today. After all, she’s making her big screen debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali’s
Rockstar.
But not many people knew her when she had just begun filming with Ranbir. That’s when she found herself in a rather funny situation with her co-star’s parents. The team had just commenced shooting in Delhi and Ranbir’s parents – Rishi and Neetu Kapoor had come to visit the team on the sets. They were staying at the same hotel where Ranbir, Nargis and the other crew were put up.
Incidentally, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor were catching up with Imtiaz in the hotel lobby on arrival when they spotted a beautiful girl sitting across the hall, talking to someone. They were so captivated by her ethereal beauty and good looks that they immediately drew Imtiaz’s attention towards the girl and exclaimed that such a pretty girl should consider making a career in Bollywood. Imitiaz chuckled, telling Rishi and Neetu that she is indeed making her debut in Bollywood, and that too opposite their son Ranbir! That’s when the Kapoor couple realised that the girl sitting in front of them was Nargis Fakhri! An amused Imitaz immediately called Nargis over and introduced her to the senior

Shake it like Haydon
After her successful debut in Aisha, sultry beauty Lisa Haydon is back on the big screen in David Dhawan’s comic caper Rascals with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn. This time around the actor has even done a sizzling hot item number with the two rascals in the movie and is looking her sexy best!
News is that the actor has shed all inhibitions for the video of her item song where she has gone bare back in a particular sequence. Insiders claim she is looking every bit as sexy and sensuous as she has looked in all her swimsuit calendar shoots! When asked about the bare-back sequence, the pretty part Tamilian-part Australian girl says, “Coming from a modeling background, I have grown comfortable with my body. And now, as an actor, I am here to fulfill the director’s creative vision.” She also goes on to speak on her experience of dancing and being choreographed by ace dance masters Bosco and Caeser, “Shake It Saiyaan has a fantastic beat and the overall feel is a blend of various styles like hip-hop and jazz.”
When Shreyas ran away with Minissha!
Looks like we have a new prankster duo in B-Town in shape of comic genius Shreyas Talpade and his Hum Tum Shabana co-star Minissha Lamba! Sources say that the pair got along like a house on fire while shooting and recently on the last leg of the comedy film even pulled of a prank on the entire team.
One of the scenes involved the duo to be jet setting on a speed boat on the beach and Shreyas initially told the crew he didn’t know how to use one. So the crew was quite apprehensive about going ahead with the scene, but nevertheless they continued….after a few rounds on the waves, director Sagar yelled cut, but Shreyas continued riding the boat and sped away with Minissha until they no longer could be seen on the water. Given the fact that Shreyas had conveyed his fears about speed boats, the entire crew including Tusshar Kapoor was tense and frantically sent out search parties for the duo, fearing the worst…but after some time Shreyas came back with Minissha and a huge smile on his face! Apparently he has always been good at water sports and this was just a prank! Well needless to say that the crew was quite relieved and had a laugh on the totally unexpected prank! Catch Hum Tum Aur Shabana as it releases September 30.
Mutual admiration club
Everyone has been talking about the ever-growing fan club of actor Ajay Devgn. The latest to join the bandwagon is none other than cricketing star Virender Sehwag.
News is that the cricket maestro was recently shooting for a commercial at a studio in Mumbai when he came to know that actor Ajay Devgn is shooting in the same studio but on a different floor for David Dhawan’s comic caper Rascals. Sehwag being a huge fan of Devgn, instantly took the opportunity and dropped by on the sets of the movie. A source from the set says, “We were shooting a promotional video for the movie, when Sehwag dropped in. The entire unit was excited and both Ajay Devgn and David Dhawan had a hearty chat with him and he even stayed back and watched Ajay do some comic scenes.” Turns out that even Ajay, who is a cricket enthusiast, loves watching Sehwag’s game and when they met, they discussed everything from films to crickets and other common passions that they share. Sehwag also wished to meet Sanjay Dutt, but unfortunately he was not around at the sets on that day. Rascals is slated for a dussehra release on October 6.
