Saji Mohan Case
Key witness turns hostile

A key witness in a corruption case against former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Saji Mohan turned hostile here today.

Sources said transporter Aditya Thakur failed to identify accused superintendent Balwinder Kumar, who was present in the courtroom.

The UT police had registered case against former NCB Chief Saji Mohan and NCB superintendent Balwinder Kumar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act on January 30, 2009.

Saji and Kumar have been charged with conniving with each other to misappropriate Rs 13.85 lakh.

7-yr-old run over by truck

Panchkula, September 15
A seven-year-old child died in an accident on late last night. The deceased was identified as Karan and was residing in the slums of Chandimandir.

The police said he was sleeping on a cot behind a parked truck. In the night when truck driver reversed the truck it ran over the child. Karan was rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, but doctors declared him brought dead. The police has registered an FIR against the truck driver in the Chandimandir police station and started the investigation.

Lightning strikes house

Lightning hit a house in Budanpur village this morning and damaged the walls and roof of the house. Fortunately, there was nobody in the house at the time of the incident. This was the second incident of lightning in Panchkula in this month. Recently, three transformers got damaged in Sector 19 after the lightning incident.

PSEB clerks demand reinstatement

Mohali: The agitating clerks of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) today blocked the main gate of the board premises in support of their demand for reinstatement.

The agitating clerks were joined by employees of the board. The clerks lamented that last time they had withdrawn their agitation on the assurance of Punjab Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan.

Irritated over the empty promise given by the Education Minister that the issue of their reinstatement would be cleared in the Cabinet, the clerks were again protesting.

Fraud Case
Treetop protester in police net

The UT Police today arrested a proclaimed offender, Avtar Singh Saini, alias Nagla, in a case of fraud registered against him in 2009.

Nagla had hit the headlines in April when he staged a month-long treetop protest at Zirakpur.

The accused is a former director, Krishi Vikas Kendra, Punjab.

The Sector-39 police arrested Nagla in a case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC, lodged against him in 2009. The police said Nagla had been booked for cheating and criminal breach of trust on the complaint of Kulwant Singh of Dadu Majra, who was defrauded of Rs 24 lakh on the pretext of opening a gas agency.

The complainant had given Nagla Rs 15 lakh in cash and the rest of the amount through cheque. However, he was defrauded as no such gas agency was given to him as promised. The accused had been at large ever since the registration of the case. The accused and the complainant are distant relatives.

PU campus men, MCMDAV women swim to title

The campus team won first place in the men’s team event of the Panjab University (PU) inter-college swimming tournament at the PU swimming pool here today.

The campus team garnered 93 points while GGDSD College, Sector 32, secured second position with 89 points.

KLSD College, Ludhiana, and SGGS College, Sector 26, finished joint third, with both teams securing 24 points each.

In the women’s category, MCMDAV College for Women bagged the first place with 74 points and GGS College for Women finished runners-up with 45 points.

The campus team finished third in the competition with 37 points while KLSD College, Ludhiana, secured fourth position with 14 points.

IOC, BPCL win in hockey

Mohali, September 15
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Mumbai, and BPCL, Bengaluru, register wins in the 9th Olympian Dharam Singh Memorial Six-a-Side Hockey Tournament at Shivalik Public School here today.

In the first match of the day, BPCL defeated Haryana XI 13-8. Jarnail Singh hit nine goals, Prabhdeep three and Sher Singh one. For the losers, Gagandeep, Sanjay Ajmani, Kuldeep and Mukesh scored two goals each.

In the second match of the day, IOC defeated Indian Air Force, Delhi, 12-11. Ramandeep Singh scored six goals, Bhupinder Singh five and Bharat one. For the losers, Virender scored four goals and Lovedeep, Lovepreet Singh and Shahnawaz Alam two each.

13 shooters for inter-school meet

The Chandigarh Rifle Association has selected 13 shooters from the city to participate in the 15th All-India Kumar Surindra Singh Inter-School Shooting Championship, to be held at Pune from September 17 to 21.

The association has also decided to organise a Sunday shooting camps to promote shooting here.

The shooters selected are Mridula Mahajan, Sannbir Singh Chawla, Maheep Gill, Sidharth Khanna, Manoj Thakur, Shivangee Sanwaria, Shivesh Sanwaria, Kanwar Bir Singh, Pranav Kumar, Yashaswini Deswal, Neena Chandel, Harsh Beniwal and Anjum Mowdgil.

5 fencers among probables

Five students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, have made it to the probables’ list for the India sub-junior fencing camp.

Fencers Himani, Tara, Gunjan, Mohan and Amit were selected after performing well in the 13th sub-junior and 8th cadet national fencing championship in Kolkata from September 5 to 9, where the contingent of 33 fencers bagged one silver and five bronze medals.
