Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 13
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the UT administration to explore the feasibility of issuing licences to tea vendors and other ‘pavement developers’ on the high court grounds.

The Bench of acting Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Gurdev Singh issued the directions after the Chandigarh administration informed the Bench that ‘pavement developers’, including tea sellers, have been removed from the parking area of the high court and they had taken away their belongings and material.

“Let the possibility be explored so that a hygienic atmosphere is maintained and those who have been asked to take away the belongings are considered for giving them licence of eateries and booths,” the Bench asserted. The assertions by UT senior standing counsel Sanjay Kaushal came during the hearing of a public interest litigation against the mushrooming of ‘pavement developers’ selling tea, snacks and other foodstuffs using kerosene.

The petitioners, Jasbir Singh Chahal, and another, had alleged the use of kerosene by ‘pavement developers’ was a potential danger to the building as well as to the vehicles parked close by.
