Engineered Route
Engineering courses will always remain popular, but today students are opting for diverse fields even in this very conventional sphere

If you thought engineering was all about computers and software, think again. The field of study has undergone immense changes and is now offering several off-beat options to make four years more than just books and experiments. We caught up with a few who have taken the variants.

"There is better demand for off-beat courses abroad. Due to recession, which recently gripped America, there is a need for professionals in the field," shares Abharika Rana, a student pursuing Food Technology in Panjab University. Taking up off-beat courses also ensures admission to the best post-graduation colleges. "IIM has a specific agriculture-based quota, which proves beneficial for those who study agri-based fields in graduation," says Rana.

Then are those who have taken up electronics instrumentation and control. Preeti Gulati, an ex-student of Thapar Engineering College, Patiala, shares her views on the interesting variants in the field. "The traditional domains of engineering have far too many involved, which becomes the prime reason why we need to move to varied specialisations," she shares.

'Boring' is another thing that sometimes tends to get attached with the stereotypical fields of engineering. "Now is the right time to make this area a bit more interesting and add industries like sound, leather and printing technology," she says.

Music is another field where engineering has spread its wings. Gone are the days when anyone holding a guitar could call himself a musician. Saurabh Aggarwal, a sound engineer, feels just that. "I always wanted to be a composer. Music has moved a long way from scribbling notations on paper," he shares. Sound is now so much more than just instruments. "To create, compose, mix, play and record a song and take out a CD can only be done by a sound engineer," he smiles. A pass-out of the School of Audio Engineering, he has also learnt the art of playing piano from Trinity School of Music, London. "I am sure I follow sound technology in a better way," he smiles.

It really does not matter if the mushrooming engineering schools don't have these varied fields. In the Punjab Engineering College there are a number of clubs and even activities are a serious business. From Robotics to the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE), the associations ensure strict entries. Gagandeep Singh Bajaj, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student, shares the story behind SAE. "We are basically the Indian chapter of SAE international and actively participate in several events. Sometimes we even make it to international events," says Gagan. Apart from honing regular automotive engineering skills, Baja (pronounced as Baha) is an off-roading-vehicle-making competition. "Students have to fabricate everything. From chassis, the body and the engine," he shares. "The interesting concept is that we work on the same software as the car manufactures. Solidworks, Catia and Lotus are a few," he shares.

The association is upbeat and hopes that a course in automotive engineering will soon be introduced in the college. "Yes, it will be a good idea. There is a severe dearth of hardcore professionals in the field, particularly due to increased specialisation," shares Amandeep Singh Saini, chairman, SAE.

So, if it is engineering you are headed towards, sit back and try to do it with a difference!

Young guns on campus
Manpriya Khurana

There’s always this rhetoric doing the rounds — after they win the elections, the four respective representatives are nowhere to be seen! With the voting done, results declared, even oath-taking over, it’s about time the feeling sinks in. Like with their predecessors or great-grand precursors, will they claim to be different or will they actually be different? Some things only time can tell, for others we need not wait. We bring you Panjab University Campus Students’ Council, up close and personal…

Right focus

Pushpinder Sharma, president
He plans to break a couple of myths and even barriers. “Let alone this allegation of not being seen around the campus, I don’t even want to hear that I’ve changed after winning the elections.” That’s Pushpinder Sharma, the brand new president. From a DR last year to being a campus president, was perhaps, the natural progression for this second-year student of Department of Laws. He adds, “We are going to campaign for a new hostel for girls. We will also demand ‘smart’ classrooms.” It is sports that keeps him busy at other times. “Throughout school I’ve been a sportsperson; I like playing cricket and basketball.” A graduate from DAV College and an MBA in marketing, it is judiciary examinations that he plans to pursue after finishing studies. Or is there an alternative career in the offing? “If I get a chance to get into mainstream politics, why not?”

True activist

Simarpal Kaur Johal, vice-president
The only girl in the gang or that’s precisely the reason why she’s there? “I wouldn’t call myself political. I’m more of an activist. I got into this community welfare thing because I’d noticed that girls would feel comfortable approaching me.” Simarpal Kaur Johal, the vice-president in the council and first-year MA student from the Department of English, likes to take it up from where it began. “I never expected it. A couple of political stints and my party nominated me. But yes, I was the president of Youth Red Cross Unit in college.” And now, she plans to deliver all that she promised. “Girls hostel is first on my agenda. As a fresher, I faced a problem there.” She adds, “I’d like to equip the whole campus with hi-speed wi-fi.” Hope the plans are finally practiced. Nudge a little more and you discover, “During free time, I write Punjabi poetry.”

Responsible job

Gaurav Kumar, joint secretary
For the joint secretary of the council Gaurav Kumar, first-year student of MA psychology, the feeling is yet to sink in. “I’m excited, but it’s such a big responsibility.” Also an opportunity that he plans to make the most of, “If there’s one issue that’s really close to my heart, then that’s placements.” “I don’t really admire any political leader, but I quite like Anna Hazare, especially the scourge that he stands against - corruption. I myself stand in queues and never use any kind of approach.” The boy from Sirhind, district Fatehgarh, likes to study Osho books, apart from the ones that are a part of his subjects. “I aspire to be a criminal psychology counsellor.” We hope he proves to be a good ‘counsel’ member.

Science man

Harmeet Singh, general secretary
Last, but not the least the general secretary of the four-member team is the only one from the sciences department. Shares the MSc chemistry student, “I want to improve the infrastructure of the sciences department; give the laboratories a facelift, get some equipment approved and organise more industrial tours.”

He adds, “You’d notice I’m not a typical student leader. Nor do I have those traits, but I want to bring a change by bettering the infrastructure in the sciences departments.” Apart from music, it is sketching nature keeps him driven about life. University is what he plans to explore in all its facets—as a student, student representative and finally as a professor. “Teaching has always been my passion. After this I’ll enroll for a doctorate.”

Big move on small screen
Divya Dutta is set for a stint on television as the host of the quiz show Filmon Ka Board Exam with Extraaa Shots Challenge
Jasmine Singh

Divya Dutta
new role: Divya Dutta

Anna Hazare could do it for a good while, but let's admit nothing can replace the hype and hoopla of Bollywood as well as cricket! Which actor is three timing, who is filing for a divorce, which star kid is seen hanging around at which club….we have to know it all.

Carrying forward the baton is MAX that announces Filmon Ka Board Exam with Extraaa Shots Challenge, a quiz show to be hosted by Divya Dutta. The actor has changed (she still returns our phone call though), she is more confident and looks great. Ever ready to share dope without mincing words, Divya Dutta has made Bollywood notice her and how…

It's my time

I am in a career that is very uncertain. I started movies in a normal way and now I have roles being written for me. Directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Yash Chopra do not give me roles because they see me as a character artist. They know I will deliver whatever is given to me.

Commercial cinema calling

Everyone goes through different phases in life; mine is changing for good. I was getting roles, but I waited for right kind of roles to come my way. I could see that audiences have liked me in Veer Zara or Delhi 6, so, now I would be doing commercial roles. It is a conscious decision, and I would be doing it for the time.

The extra shots

Oh! We all love everything about Bollywood, the trivia, the gossip. Extraaa Shots Challenge is a new quiz show that would make viewers know of 'behind the scene' happenings of movies. I loved to take on the role of a host because I am a big movie buff myself.

Filmy trivia

Most of the times we know about movies, but there are some things that we don't know. For instance, I did not know that Jaya Bachchan was pregnant when shooting for Sholay. It will be an interesting show where film buffs will try to outdo each other in a three-round challenge, using their knowledge of movies.

Yes, I have changed

As I said, I was getting lot of television, but I waited for the right kind of role. This one seems great. I have become more confident after the success of my movies; people say I have never looked better. I am a little more worldly-wise now!

Passion cricket

As long as India is doing well I like cricket. I am a cricket fan, not a religious one though.

International fashion designer Emannuelle Junqueira showcased her charming Spring/Summer 2011-2012 collection with a theme, ‘Brazilian beaches’, in feminine colours of rose, off- white, lime- green, greenish-blue with combinations of black.

Gorgeous Miss Brazil, Debora Lyra dazzled the ramp as the showstopper during the Signature Premier ‘World of 8 International Fashion Tour’ held in Ludhiana on Sunday.

Indian designer Varun Bahl brought alive the era of French courtly debauchery with a colour palette spanning decadent pistachio hues to deep drunken wines and maroons, and glamorous golds to pure ivory shades.

He kept the Indian flavour alive with lehengas, farshi pajamas and anarkalis. Flowing lengths of air-like tulle, shimmering damasks, and cascading chiffons with majestic jackets and corset-like structures provided the perfect backdrop to this fusion of two cultures that have celebrated the sentiment of haute couture to the hilt through ages.

Bollywood star Kunal Kapoor walked the ramp as Bahl’s showstopper, setting the haute-quotient soaring high. It was the perfect amalgamation of the bold and the beautiful in the true sense. —Minna Zutshi

A heart's calling!
This world is a big movie, and, you don't get upset while enacting your part on a set, says Burcu Baldauf, a Turkish-actress-turned social activist
Mona

Burcu Baldauf had everything a 20-year-old can dream of - a happening career, a plush flat in her name, fancy car, free flowing money; name and fame. A Turkish actress, Burcu was trained in American Academy of Dramatic Art, Los Angeles. And, it was in a fancy LA restaurant that she realised that this is not what she is meant for!

"I worked on my career to earn all the riches that I thought would give me 'happiness', but that was not to be," shares Burcu over a cup of coffee in a Chandigharh bistro on Monday. The search for truth, that began early (she refused to take on religion in elementary school at five because she thought her religion teacher was confused), took its full form after that.

Burcu read about all the faiths - Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, Kabbalah - but nothing worked for her. "I was disturbed by the faction fights in every major religion," she shares. Buddhism appealed to her, but she couldn't agree with one of its principle that she couldn't grow a flower for the fear that she might develop an attachment with it! "I wanted to make a living and help people as much as I could," says Burcu. Close to a decade now, she has been doing precisely that.

Part of Samarpan, an NGO started in Goa and spread all over the country, Burcu has finally found her calling. "It was in Dr Patrick, the founder of Samarpan, that I found all the answers I was looking for. To date, I guess, he's the only one I have come across who walks his talk," says Burcu.

In Goa on a short vacation, a chance meeting with this healer changed Burcu's life forever. The actress gave up her career to support orphanages, old age homes and helping destitute build a life. In fact, that's what brings her to Chandigarh as well. Candle-making workshop with Burail Jail inmates, special children from Regional Institute for Mentally Handicapped-31 and slum children next to Ghaggar Bridge, Panchkula, has kept Burcu busy on her short Chandigarh visit.

"When I look back, I see how I was saddened by the relationship problems but now that I have learnt to give love; I have been receiving the same in abundance," she says. "You know when mind is not there, one can feel the purity of the soul. I was overwhelmed with the abundance of love I got in the workshop this morning" shares Burcu.

Goa is now home to her and she hopes that she wouldn't have to move out ever. Helping, healing is her motto; spreading love, peace, happiness and kindness - her pursuit!

Short game — drills
Jesse Grewal

There are various methods to learn - Analytical, visual and kinesthetic. The first involves thinking and understanding and creating the movement, the second is seeing and copying or using mirrors, video etc and the third method is using drills to create a muscle memory. Each of us learns in different ways and one must understand which method works well for one. Drills help us learn a motion without having to consciously create it. Repeated motion using a drill helps create a muscle memory which can be used effectively on the course.

Bunker drill for an upright swing - Place a shaft at an angle of 45 degrees (picture 1) and make a few swings without hitting the shaft on both the backswing and the downswing. This will help create a more upright swing and also make the necessary wrist cock. Once this feeling is ingrained hit a few balls with this method. You can also hit a few balls from the back lip of a bunker. To avoid hitting the lip you will have to pick up the club a little vertically and also not hit the lip on the downswing.

Left arm chips — To improve the path of the club hit chip shots with your left arm only (for right handed players). Practice with this method improves the path of the club as it moves low and towards the target on the follow through. This also stops the scooping action as the left wrist remains flat at the end of the follow through (picture 2).

Use shafts for path - Another drill to improve chipping is to put two clubs parallel to each other and pointing at the target. Hit chip shots with the ball between them. The club will move slightly inwards on the take away but should move low and stay between the shafts on the follow through (picture 3).

The ‘in’ side
Cabinet show
Sukhmani

These days' china cabinets are used to display not only your grandmother's china but also your collectables, books, curios etc. A well displayed china cabinet can be made a focal point of the room and can add that extra touch of elegance to it.

n Check the design and theme of the room. Make sure what you display goes well with the décor or else it will look odd.

n In order for people to appreciate the display, do not clutter the cabinet.

n Balance your display. If you are showcasing your china, put bigger pieces in the center and smaller ones around it.

n Display like items together. If you have a collection of small porcelain dolls, group them together and add items that blend with them.

n Use mirror and light for reflection and to add a dramatic effect.

n Visually divide the entire cabinet into left, center and right side. It is important to co-ordinate each shelf with similar groupings.

n The middle shelf in the center of the cabinet is usually made to be the focal point. Try and display your main china here. Display your plates standing up in order to provide an interesting backdrop for the rest of your china.

n Symmetry is very important while displaying your things. Stock up heavy stuff in the center and smaller ones on the sides or have larger plates on the bottom and the size diminishing with every shelf above and vice versa.

n Display glasses in staggered rows or alternate having them upright and upside down.

n Always group smaller items in odd numbers for a pleasing effect.

n Among your china, now add a few decorative items like vase, figurine or candlesticks to add an interesting touch.

Remember, a well displayed china cabinet can add character to an otherwise boring and simple dining area.

Master Chef
The chronicles of Kiev!
Kandla Nijhowne

Our culinary tour to Russia can't be over without the Kiev connection! Chicken a la Kiev without doubt is the finest offering from them. It's a thin fillet of chicken enveloping parsley butter which oozes out when the roll is sliced open! The herby butter adds a unique dimension to the crispy surface of the chicken and the moist, succulent inner layers. It owes its name to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, but hasn't gone uncontested, since the Russians have alleged they perfected this recipe, calling it Chicken Mikhailovsky! The Poles say it originated in the Polish city of Kijow, while the French say it was invented in the 18th century!

Chicken a la Kiev

250-300 gm butter

2 tsp dried parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

4 boneless, chicken breast halves

2 eggs, beaten with 1 tsp water

2 cups bread crumbs

Oil for frying

Method

n Mix butter and parsley, and season with pepper and a pinch of salt. Place mixture on plastic wrap, shape and roll into small log. Place in freezer for 15 minutes.

n Beat to flatten each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap till evenly thin.

n Season with salt andpepper.

n Cut the frozen block of herbed butter into 4 long sticks. Place one of these on each flattened chicken breast and roll tightly. Ensure that the butter is completely sealed in by the flesh.

n Chill thoroughly for an hour or more.

n Lay out the breadcrumbs in a wide plate, and the eggs in a shallow dish, ready to use.

n Set up oil in a fry pan on medium heat.

n Dip each oblong cylinder of chicken in the egg, and then roll generously in the breadcrumbs.

n Gently lower the chicken breasts in hot oil, without overcrowding. (The latter could result in a big drop in the oil's temperature which would be undesirable.)

n Fry till golden brown. Then turn to cook the upper side. Be gentle, as the filling of butter may leak out if the casing is damaged!

n Remove to a plate lined with kitchen towels to soak up excess oil.

n Serve hot with mashed potato, green peas or beans, rice or dinner rolls.

Mahima Chaudhry (September 13,1973 Kelowna, British Columbia) was a model before she became an actress in Pardes (1997) as Ganga. She was chosen to be the female lead among 3000 applicants who auditioned for Pardes (1997). She changed her name from Ritu Chaudhry to Mahima Chaudhry since Subhash Ghai has a superstitious belief of launching big careers with actresses whose name start with M. She was nominated in Filmfare Awards for that role.

She was also nominated for her performances in Dhadkan and Dobara. She has played a variety of roles and is known as one of the few actresses who have played every different role an actress could play. Her career may slowdown in 2015.

Twin Treat

Meghna Malik
Double deal: Meghna Malik

This graceful actress is creating waves with her performance as the strong matriarch Ammaji in Naa Aana Is Desh Meri Laado on Colors. Reveling in the double role, Meghna Malik talks about enjoying the show, shooting with Salman and her love for dance.

How tough is to shoot for the dual role of Ammaji and Anjali?

It is very tough to play a double role in television as we have to keep changing back and forth for scenes of both characters. But the current track thankfully has only one Ammaji and I will be seen in the get-up of Ammaji only. At present, there is a double role in the show but both have the same look. The different look of Anjali was revealed for a brief time during her introduction. So let's see when the two Ammajis come face to face.

Whose idea was to introduce the track of Ammaji's lookalike Anjali?

The credit goes to the story teller, who thought of introducing this new track. Obviously this idea was quite interesting as it made the audiences watch the show and kept them hooked to the show.

What is the story of Anjali and why is she playing Ammaji?

There is a reason behind her acting as Ammaji and she is doing this to save her little daughter Mausam. She has taken up the role of playing Ammaji before the world as a compromise. She doesn't want to do it but is forced to. The character of Anjali is completely different from Ammaji and being an actor, for me it has been really interesting to play Anjali's role.

What do you like about Ammaji?

For me, Ammaji is the most beautiful character ever produced on Indian television. This role gives tough competition to all male and female leads which are currently on TV. It is complex and has a larger than life feel. While playing the character, I have played different shades which I feel are the highlight of doing a role like Ammaji.

How was your working experience with Salman Khan?

It was nice and interesting but at the same time, I was surprised to see his dedication towards work. His dedication really inspires me to be a hardworking actor. He is very humorous and it was nice to see him as Ammaji's bodyguard. I was amazed to know that even he has seen my show on television. He told me that even his parents love our show and its presentation.

What shows do you like to watch on television?

I am not into fiction shows but whenever I get time to surf on television, I watch Kaun Banega Crorepati as I love the concept. It is nice to see Mr. Bachchan who is my favourite host.

Apart from acting, what are you most passionate about?

I love music and dance though I am not a trained dancer but I love dancing. My best experience of dancing was when I did a tango dance on Darling at Zee Gold Awards. It was awesome.

Star Track
The melody Maker

The Oscar-Grammy winner is excited about teaming up with Jagger, English singer Joss Stone, musician Dave Stewart and Jamaican reggae artist Damian Marley for SuperHeavy.

The band's 16-song album has two of his contributions -- Satyameva Jayate and Mahiya -- both with strong Indian influences.

"Some things in life are not planned, so I was doing a lot of movies in 2008. At the end of that there were a lot of dark things that hap pened in my life. I lost my sound engineer and we had those floods in Chennai and we had so many negative things. I was going through a lot of stress in my work," said Rahman.

"At that point of time I got this call from Dave saying 'AR would you be interested in collaborating with me and Mick?' I was like anything to get out of here at this point," he says about the band which was formed sometime during 2009, before his Oscar feat for Slumdog Millionaire.

It was completely a new experience for the 45-year-old musician, who last played in a band in high school.

"I don't know what I was doing; they called me so I would set all my keyboards because I was playing in a band ages ago in high school band and stuff. It's almost like a whole, full circle coming in a very different way," he says.

With his version of Vande Mataram gaining an iconic status, the Chennai-born musician says it was a dream to weave the ethos of Indian culture, best represented in Satyameva Jayate, into a song. Rahman, however, did not have the lyrics ready when they started recording the song. "Dave said AR we want your voice in this album and want this to be a great Indian song too. A long dream for me was to take one of the morals of Indian culture, which is Satyameva Jayate and make it as a song and I said this is historic if Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damien Marley, Dave Stewart and me come together for a song like this is iconic in a way. "It was to act spontaneously at that point and we started doing the song and I didn't have any other lyrics than Satyameva Jayate. I knew that was the song but nothing else and then later we filled in the lyrics and we had the choir to make it more epic in a way. I hope people like it. There is Mahiya which is a romantic song," he says. Super Heavy, according to him, is a musical team with each member having a distinct style. "If you look at the five of us, we have all been driving our own thing and have our own following. So we brought very different influences to the table. I really hope that the Indian audience enjoys the album." Rahman, who once said he likes to compose music in the silence of the night, had some magical moments with his co-band members.

"The time we had was great - full of excitement, enjoyment, innovativeness - so different from how it generally works for me."

"We had jamming sessions where Mick would be playing something, Joss would be singing, Dave will join in, Damian will add to it and a melody would just evolve from all the interaction. And those were some magical moments for me - a long lasting memory." Rahman, who recently composed music for Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rockstar and Rajinikanth's Ranaa, says he will continue making music in India. "It's because of the constant support of my Indian fans that I am here and I will continue making music in Indian languages for them." — PTI

Ranbir's field day

Ranbir Kapoor
rustic touch: Ranbir Kapoor

Trust actors to go to any lengths to get into their character. And Ranbir Kapoor is not the one to be left behind! The actor, who will soon be seen in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar actually lived with a jatt family to experience their lifestyle as part of his character study!

In the film, Ranbir plays Janardan Jakhar, the youngest son of a traditional jatt family and therefore it was important for him to pick up their mannerisms to put up a convincing act.

Says a source from the unit, "Imtiaz and Ranbir spent an entire day with a Jatt family based on the outskirts of Delhi…they would hang around with the young boys of the family, sleep on the cots, eat out at the local dhabas and enjoy hookah in the evening" In fact, Ranbir even assisted the men of the house in milking the cows!

The source continues, "Ranbir had the time of his life trying to milk the cows! It was such an amusing sight…everyone was in splits! But all in all, they learnt a lot about the lifestyle of a typical jatt family which was important for filming; and also ended up having a great time doing things that they wouldn't otherwise get to experience." Now that's called mixing work with pleasure! —HRM

Rock solid

It is clear that as producers, Zayed Khan, Dia Mirza, and Sahil Sangha, are playing the quality and not the quantity game. So instead of packing the soundtrack of their debut production Love, BreakUps, Zindagi with fillers of dubious quality, they just have four rock solid numbers composed by Salim-Sulaiman and have lyrics by the great Javed Akhtar.

This first ever collaboration between Javed saab and Salim-Sulaiman has truly yielded wonderful results. Rozaana, the first track is sung by Salim Merchant himself. An upbeat peppy (and wonderfully written) song, it captures the magic that exists in our everyday life and celebrates the small things that add to making life our most memorable journey taken. It's one of the most uplifting songs that you would have heard in recent years, and is perfectly composed, arranged, and performed.

Rab Raakha features the inimitable talents of Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal who are given company by Salim Merchant and Shradha Pandit. It is a wedding song, but it is not the usual boisterous Punjabi number that often typifies wedding songs. Instead, it soulfully aims to capture the myriad of emotions that fill up our hearts during the course of a wedding. The lyrics span over the many moods, nuances and intricacies of the occasion once again celebrating the color, joy and love.

Talking about the album writer/director Sahil Sangha said, "We were convinced that the songs in the film had to add to the story rather than being forced into a soundtrack for marketing purposes alone. We are thrilled that Salim-Sulaiman have given us a soundtrack that we can always be proud of."

For those who have caught a glimpse of the visuals are as delighted by the look and feel of the songs as they are with the sound of them.

Love Love Love makes wonderful use of harmonies. Benny Dayal and Shradha Pandit are soulful, sensuous, and exultant, all in the same song. It is a tune that aims to make you fall in love all over again, each time you have listen. The lyrics and arrangement have an inherent sense of romance that highlights the nature of the relationships shared by the protagonists of the film.

The final track in the album is called Chayee Hai Tanhayee. It features Shafquat Amanat Ali and Shruti Pathak, is a beautiful song of longing and loneliness. The composers beautifully draw from qawwali rhythms but turn it into something absolutely contemporary- a soul searching song that explores the heart's desire of what could have been.

Love, BreakUps, Zindagi then, is truly a soundtrack that leaves you wanting for more, rather than one that makes you wait for it to get over. The film releases on 7th October 2011.

Inked for good

High School Musical stars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale have got new tattoos.

The former co-stars, who are now best friends, visited R&B star Rihanna's favourite artist Bang Bang to get inked.

Tisdale, 26, has jamais seule, which is said to be French for 'never alone', inked on her foot. Hudgens, 22, opted for Om, a mantra used in meditation, reported a publication online.

It is the second time Hudgens has visited Bang Bang's parlour as in February she had a butterfly tattooed on her neck. Tisdale is also a body art veteran; she had the word Believe written down her back several years ago and has Fearless on her wrist. The stars are in New York to attend Fashion Week festivities.

Hudgens, who played Gabriella Montez in the hit Disney franchise, recently took on a gritty role as a homeless pregnant woman in the upcoming film, Gimme Shelter. Meanwhile, Tisdale starred in Sharpay's Fabulous Adventures as well as landing a role in the TV series Hellcats. She also lends her voice to the animated comedy series Phineas and Ferb. — PTI

Till studies do us part

Emma Watson
IN LOVE: Emma Watson

Emma Watson is said to be so keen on her new boyfriend that she has asked him to move to Britain to be with her. The 21-year-old actor, who is about to resume her studies at Oxford University, wants her American beau Johnny Simmons to be with her when she does so next month.

"Emma is looking forward to her English degree at Worcester College," a publication quoted a friend as saying. "She is excited to be back but she misses Johnny. She would love him to come here," the friend stated. The Harry Potter star, who met the 24-year-old actor on the set of her new film The Perks of being A Wallflower, spent a weekend with him in Los Angeles last month, before flying home to prepare for her return to Oxford. — ANI

No kidding

Singer Peter Andre says he will not have any more children in the future and is happy with the kids he has with ex-wife Katie Price.

The 38-year-old believes his two kids, Junior, six, and Princess Tiaamii, four, Price, are enough for him and thinks it will be unlikely that he will have a baby in the future, reported a publication.

"Part of me craves getting married again. But having kids? I'm not so sure. I wanted so many when I had the first two but now I don't know. I originally wanted six! I'm one of six and my dad is one of 12," said the Mysterious girl hit maker. Even though Andre and Price are divorced, he still considers Harvey, her son from a previous relationship, his own. "I know Harvey isn't my adopted son but he is in my heart," he said. — PTI

Abhay’s mature act

Abhay Deol is looking forward to play a 40-year-old IAS officer in Dibakar Banerjee's upcoming political thriller Shanghai, an adaptation of Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos 1966 novel Z.

Abhay, who played the role of a thief in Dibakar's previous outing Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, says he did not hesitate to take up the role of a middle-aged South Indian IAS officer, who finds himself pushed and pulled by various forces while on duty.

"I love Dibakar's style of filmmaking and it was phenomenal to be a part of his Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. So when he told me to play someone much older than me in Shanghai, I did not hesitate. I wanted to be challenged as an actor," Abhay said.

Fresh from the success of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the 35-year-old has teamed up with Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechelin, his Dev D co-star, for the film. Shanghai is about common man's aspirations and dreams.

"The film is very different. The incidents are based on a small town in India. The film shows how most of us aspire to live a better life, get better roads and infrastructure. But then isn't it easier said than done?" Abhay is known for taking unconventional roles in his career but the actor says he does not set any boundaries when it comes to picking up projects.

"I don't have boundaries when it comes to signing a project. Manorama - Six Feet Under was an offbeat film, which was slightly serious and subtle. Then Ek Chalis Ki Last Local was an out and out comedy. Socha Na Tha was a romcom and a much more universal subject. Dev D was a drama," Abhay says. "The common link in each of these films is that they have been very content driven and the story as well as the character are strong," he adds.— PTI
