Rajiv Bhatia

Zirakpur, September 12
An electricity pole in the middle of a newly constructed road near Hem Vihar at Baltana, Zirakpur, poses a threat to life of commuters, especially in the dark. During the past few days, many accidents involving the pole have been reported.

The situation becomes even worse during the night. There is no proper lighting system due to which motorists cannot see this pole easily.

The Zirakpur Municipal Council officials, however, are yet to wake up from their deep slumber as they have not taken any action in this regard.

Residents told The Tribune that they had submitted their complaint to the officials concerned and also informed the area councillor many times, but nothing has been done so far.

Mahesh, a resident of Baltana, stated that on Thursday night, he along with his four friends, all residents of Baltana, had a narrow escape when the car they were travelling in rammed into the pole. Rain further led to poor visibility, he added.

He claimed that the accident resulted in sparking and they could have been electrocuted.

Another resident of the area claimed that many accidents had been reported in the past few days.

He claimed to have informed the MC officials and the electricity department about the pole fitted in the middle of the road, but nobody took any action.

An official of the electricity department stated that he would visit the site and ask the official concerned to shift the location of the pole.

No takers for shooting in city
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 12
The city might have produced an ace shooter like Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra, yet there are no takers for the sport here.

The sport was handed over to the Chandigarh Police in 2001 by the UT sports department, after giving the reason that shooting dealt with firearms, and it still didn’t have good facilities in the city. Interestingly, even after being handed over to the Chandigarh Police nothing was done.

“I don’t know when the officials of the UT sports department will understand that it is a ‘sport’ and that too a recognized one, it is not a ‘law’ that the police should take care of it” said Lt Col (Retd.) JS Dhillon, coach of Abhinav Bindra and vice-president of the Chandigarh Riffle Association.

The Patiala ki Rao Shooting Range in Sector 25, which is the only range to have all the shooting facility in India, is in a dire need of revamp.

The range is marred by wild growth in the shooting area, broken target machines and pulleys, stinking toilets, dry taps, stray animals and poisonous reptiles.

“I am exhausted after getting false assurances from the authorities from past 10 years. I have written many letters to the dealing hand but nothing has happened so far. The only assurance I gat is, “Sir kam ho jayega (work will be done)” said Dhillon.

No individual or team in the city has won any medal at the national level for a long span of time.

“Abhinav has his own shooting range and that was provided to him by his family. If one thinks that on can bag medals after practicing in a range full of wild grass with no upgraded equipment and unhealthy environment, it is next to impossible” said Dhillon.

According to Dhillon, the sports department should take back the sports under its wings and start renovating the shooting range.

“On one side, the administration is making tall claims about promoting sports and on the other, it has failed to maintain the existing sports facilities. The maintenance of the ranges needs a lot of effort, including financial contribution”, said Dhillon.

Adding further “I pained to see the range in a dilapidated condition, which has hosted two national championships and several state competitions. If we have good shooting facility it will encourage the sport” said Dhillon.

No progress so far

Shooting was handed over to the Chandigarh Police in 2001 by the UT sports department, after giving the reason that shooting dealt with firearms, and it still didn’t have good facilities in the city. Interestingly, even after being handed over to the Chandigarh Police nothing has been done so far.
