Panchkula, September 7
District and Sessions Judge Manjit Singh today dismissed the bail application of Sahil Puri, an accused in the Panchkula gangrape case. After hearing the arguments from both parties- the applicant and the prosecution- the court had reserved its order on the bail application.

Puri in his application had stated that he was being falsely implicated in this case. But the Panchkula police had opposed his bail application stating that the investigation of the case was at a very crucial stage and bail to the accused would ultimately hamper the probe.

On the complaint of the victim’s family, the Panchkula police on June 28 had arrested Sahil Puri, a resident of Sector 2, and a mechanical engineering student at a Baddi-based private university, and Marshal Arora of NAC, Mani Majra, a BA student of a private college in Chandigarh.

An FIR has been lodged under Section 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her into marriage) and 376-G (gangrape) against both the accused at the Sector 5 police station.

The victim’s father said the accused were known to his son and often used to visit their house. He said on June 26 he had gone out for some work and when he returned his daughter was missing. He said after looking for her for some time, he informed the police and soon the two accused threw her near the gate and fled in a car.

As the girl was in a semi-conscious state, they could not get any information from her. He said her daughter narrated the whole incident to them on June 27 and thereafter they lodged a complaint with the Sector 5 police station.

Judicial custody for mastermind
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 7
A local court today remanded the PGI admission scam mastermind, Gaurav Shalin, in 14 day judicial custody after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not press for his further police custody.

The CBI produced Gaurav Shalin in the district court after the completion of eight days of police remand. CBI counsel Tarun Goyal moved the application for accused’s judicial custody, which was granted by the court.

Gaurav was arrested on August 30 on charges of running the entire racket involving admissions in the PGI for MD/MS courses in 2009. On September 28, 2010, the anti-corruption branch of the CBI had arrested two junior resident doctors of the PGI, Dr Amit Musale and Dr Sujay Sonawane, who had allegedly secured admission by paying hefty sums and cleared the entrance examination with the help of impersonators.

According to the CBI, Gaurav had got Amit and Sujay admitted to MD pharmacology and MD paediatrics, respectively, at the PGIMER, Chandigarh, by using unknown persons to impersonate the two in the entrance examination.

Amit and Sujay used to convince aspiring candidates of the legitimacy of the admission process being followed by Gaurav.
