Brush with an artist
“I am the bridge over which coming generations of artists will pass,” said world famous painter Cezanne. Sunirmal Chatterjee, teacher–artist who continue to inspire generations of artists and architects, is one such example from Chandigarh. “All my works are dedicated to my dear students of art and architecture from whom I have learnt a lot,” wrote Chatterjee. On Teacher’s Day, Retrospective of Sunirmal Chatterjee, an exhibition curated by DS Kapoor, principal, Government College of Art-10, brings together some 180 works by this teacher and artist
par excellence. Chatterjee, who taught at Government College of Art-10 and Chandigarh College of Architecture -12, continues to inspire his students even though he is not with us any longer. The exhibition inaugurated by none but his students, opened to a packed house on Monday. A painter who dabbled in oil and water colours, print, paper cuts, collages, clay figurines and murals, Chatterjee’s works are a result of successful experimentation. Much impressive is his cut paperwork in which he used bits of paper in fish forms, balancing out the positive and negative forces of life. Not only as an artiste, Chatterjee is fondly remembered as a teacher par excellence, who imparted knowledge by demonstration and gentle persuasion. Extremely patient with students, Chatterjee is known as the one who didn’t mind adjusting his
pace according to the students’ potential. Balwinder Singh, former principal, Government College of Men-11, recounts the event that left a lasting impression on him from his college days. “In the mid-sixties, during harsh winters we would sit lazing around in the sun and not attend classes. One fine day, the peon conveyed the message that Chatterjee wanted to see me in class,” shares Singh. When Singh entered the classroom, he found Chatterjee busy carving a piece of wood. Putting down the tools, Chatterjee asked, “Do you know why I am carving this piece?” When Singh answered in the negative, he replied, “I thought that seeing me work alone would embarrass you and bring you
to the working table,” recalls Singh. Such were the ways of Chatterjee, who was emotionally attached with each of his students - felt their pain if they struggled and took immense pride in their success. The present exhibition reflects his drawings and sketches on tours with his students to Goa, Nainital and Himachal Pradesh. It brings out the versatility of the artiste. This exhibition makes its curator DS Kapoor, principal, GCA-10, a proud man. “This brings alive Sunirmal Chatterjee’s philosophy of art. This eternal spring of creativity will serve as a significant guiding force in art as well as architecture.” (On till September 10)

Following his heart
Mona BN Goswamy, widely regarded, nationally and internationally, as India’s most distinguished art historian, has trodden an unconventional path. Trained initially as a historian, in his career he has taken some sharp turns. For instance, he got into the prestigious civil services (batch of 1956) and was an IAS officer for just a little short of three years, when he took the decision to give it all up – status, power, privileges, money – and returned to academics. Joining the Panjab University and taking up a PhD in ‘The Social Background of Kangra Valley Painting’, he began his academic career first as a research fellow (at Rs 300 a month!) and then as a lecturer in the Department of History. But art beckoned him and gradually, as the opportunity arose, he shifted to art history - teaching abroad, becoming a professor at home and eventually becoming instrumental in founding the Department of Art History at the Punjab University. “We virtually invented the discipline here, as we went along”, he says. A prolific writer, Goswamy has over time become a leading authority on Indian art. He has also curated major exhibitions of Indian art the world over. The latest exhibition that he has been responsible for was at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, a show that has been widely hailed. He is now travelling to New York to open the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art. In recognition of his work, honours and awards have been pouring in: the Rockefeller Fellowship, the Rietberg Award from Switzerland for Outstanding Research in Art History, the Padma Shri (1998) and the Padma Bhushan (2008). As we catch up with him at his home in Chandigarh, he shares his time with us, but adds self-effacingly: “I do not think I have achieved much....” He was clear, however, about what has kept him going. Conviction in what you do: Leaving the prestigious Indian Administrative Service and taking a leap into the world of academics was ‘not easy’, but he was convinced about the decision. “It is not that the civil services are unimportant, but I felt that I could realise myself more in the academic world.” Courage to follow your instinct: Again, to move from history to art history was not easy, for the discipline was virtually unknown in India at that time. But exposure to art abroad, the excitement of doing field-work, the challenge of making good in what was then a “brand-new field”, propelled him in that direction. Learn, keep learning: “I believe that one should constantly expand the frontiers of the mind. I knew nothing about Western music or dance, or even art, when I went abroad for the first time. But I made it my business to learn as much as I could and absorb. Cultivation of the mind is everything.” To be able to read, see and hear something new each day, even if it is for ten minutes or so, is to grow in life. A verse from Faiz, a passage from Coomaraswamy, a raga sung by Kumar Gandharva: this is all that it takes! Keep the urge to inquire alive: “One expands the mind as one asks questions.” Not every question has an answer, but the very act of asking questions is vital. For that is how the riches of the mind grow. To grow, remain rooted: Though he never says it but his humility is all so perceivable. Not once, does he make a show of his knowledge or position. Probably, that’s the reason for all his success. Apart from being on various key positions, Goswamy is working on Pichhwais, paintings on textiles, an art popular in Rajasthan; apart from writing, lecturing and curating exhibitions around the world. mona@tribunemail.com |
In the sad list
Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic Schindler's List has beat tearjerkers such as Love Story, Terms of Endearment and Titanic to be the saddest film of all time. The 1993 film, starring Liam Neeson as German businessman Oskar Schindler, won seven Oscars — including Best Director for Spielberg.
It tells the tale of how Schindler saved hundreds of his Jewish workers from being sent to their deaths at Auschwitz. More than 20 percent of moviegoers who took part in a poll by Entertainment Weekly magazine to name cinema's weepiest production singled it out. The 1957 Disney film Old Yeller was second, while Terms of Endearment, with Jack Nicholson and Shirley MacLaine, came third with 14 per cent of the vote. Brokeback Mountain came fourth while another film set around the Holocaust, Life is Beautiful, came fifth. —

Role of honour
After playing a Naxalite in Red Alert - The War Within, actor Sameera Reddy is getting back into a glamorous image in her next action thriller Tezz.
However, the 32-year-old actor says that it isn’t the lure of looking glamourous that makes her choose her roles now. “After being in the industry for so long, I have the understanding to know whether a film really needs me or not,” said Reddy, who made her debut in 2002 with Maine Dil Tujhko Diya. “Today I can’t be picking up a film just because it comes from a top banner. I have to like the overall quality of a film rather than consenting to it just because someone tells me that I have to be scantily dressed,” Reddy said. The actress says she plans to pick up only meaty roles in future irrespective of the banner. “There are certain films that I did because they came from reputed banners and boasted of good co-stars. I may not have had much to do in these films but I thought the overall impact would be worthwhile. However I can’t continue to do that now,” Reddy said. In Tezz, Reddy will be seen doing some action along with co-star Ajay Devgn. “I always wanted to do a full on action movie and Tezz gave me that opportunity to merge performance with the look. Here I have gone quite sleek with that ‘bike-n-babe’ combination. The look I am carrying has a very Angelina Jolie kind of feel to it,” the actor said. Meanwhile, her Bollywood career hasn’t made her bid goodbye to South. She is already shooting a Tamil film with Madhavan Vettai, her Telugu film Nadunisi Naaygal with director Gautham Menon released early this year. “Even Madhavan is doing regional films. And then Prabhu Deva made Wanted with Salman but is still continuing his stint in South. After all these films have a great reach today so it would be foolhardy to let something good pass by,” Reddy said. —PTI

Departmental stint
Mega star Amitabh Bachchan will be seen doing a cameo in Ram Gopal Varma’s upcoming film Department. The film, which was earlier offered to Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role, will now see actor Rana Daggubati instead because of date issues with junior Bachchan. “Ram Gopal Varma’s Department - where I have agreed to do a friendly appearance - begins next week and that should come as a somewhat better proposition for me,” Amitabh wrote on his blog.
The two have worked together before in movies Sarkar, Sarkar Raj and Rann. Amitabh will be seen playing a gangster-turned-politician in the film. The cast of the film also includes Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Nasseruddin Shah and Anjana Sukhani. — PTI

Glitter & gold
Angelina Jolie says she created her jewellery line for fun and to raise money for charity. The 36-year-old, who has her own range of accessories, said it has never been a huge ambition of hers and she did it because she wanted to design pieces she could wear, a website reported.
"I did it for fun. The proceeds go to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, a foundation I started with Gene Sperling. I like certain types of jewellery I wasn't finding, big chunky stones with gold. I worked with a designer, saying, If I had an ideal ring, it would look like this. Or, I'd love a pair of earrings that look that," said Joile. The Tourist actor, who raises six children with partner Brad Pitt, has always been known for doing her bit for the social causes and said the charity is for education rights for children. "These are the children who need a safe place to learn, a place to heal, a place to build a better future.” — PTI

Visualise, commit and execute
Jesse Grewal To be good at the short game one must practice a variety of shots. The most important part of your practice is to hit different type of shots - chips, pitches and lob shots. It is also important to use different clubs for the same shot - hit chip shots with a less lofted iron, some with the pitching wedge and others with the sand and lob wedge. One should also try a few chips with the rescue as this is useful when the ball is resting against a thick fringe. Similarly pitch shots should also be hit with different clubs.
Most of us practice from a good lie. We tend to create a good lie most of the time and do not get to practice from bad lies, thick grass and sloping lies. Once you practice from different situations it helps us to be able to visualise the shot better on the course and helps in our decision on club selection. This helps our confidence and results in better shot making on the course. Assess every short game shot from the lie, the ratio of flight and roll required for the shot, the condition of the surface and slopes on the green. For an average golfer the first choice should be whether one could putt, the next choice a chip and if both are not the appropriate shots as there could be a bunker or thick grass forcing one to take the aerial route then we would pitch. Choose a landing area on the green which is relatively flat so that we can predict the way the ball will respond. If there is a slope between the hole and you, either land the ball closer to you with a less lofted club and let it roll through the slope or lob it over the slope and try and land the ball near the hole. If one is forced to drop the ball on a steep slope take a less lofted club if it is into an upslope and a more lofted club onto a downslope. The three steps one should go through on every shot is first visualise the shot, then commit to it. Many of us get double minded when we are about to hit a shot. We may have visualised that the shot required was a pitch and after selecting the club and got ready for the shot suddenly felt that a chip would be safer. Then we either change the club or proceed to hit an uncommitted shot. Once you visualise a shot commit to it and you will execute it with success. |

Romancing the book
Remember the classic romantic novel series Mills and Boons, better known as MBs, which no female missed out during those years of growing up and dreaming about their ideal man?
Times have moved along and so have the content of MBs, where female protagonists have become more powerful and ambitious. Harlequin Mills and Boons (HMBI) have entered the Indian market since 2008 and are releasing twenty titles every month. The distribution pattern is like a monthly magazine. The company is now promoting Indian writers, who are nurtured under an editorial board based in the UK. The list includes names like Milan Vohra, Aastha Atray and Poonam Dabbas. Manish Singh, country manager, HMBI, shares more about the series and the expectations from the Indian market. Is there a demand for such kind of romantic genre in India? "This is second on the list after the children fiction category. The genre certainly has an amazing demand globally as well as in India. Emotions like love and romance have a great connect with the audience," he says. Established as a brand around a hundred years ago, the originality of Mills and Boons is maintained by certain guidelines and the talent of the writer is balanced with it. If Indian writers are generating content for these books, Indian models can pose for their covers through the 'Friends for Life', an online model hunt contest, through which three male and an equal number of female models will be selected. "This will make the releases by these Indian authors more worthy, as Indian models will be seen on the covers." The series are categorised under Modern, Romance, Desire, Special Moments and the latest one - Nocturne. Did the advent of Twilight prompt MBs to take out the paranormal series? "For sure; Harry Potter and Twilight are the inspirations. But the only difference is that our books cater to the 16- 60 age-group readers. Nocturne series move faster, are action-oriented as life and death is at stake," shares Manish. The settings are not only exotic, but Indian as well and they do well abroad. What about the bold portrayals associated with the series? Says Manish, "The relation between a man and a woman is blissful; writers know exactly what type of characters to infuse and every series has different levels of sensuality."

Double shift
Depression among women has doubled since the 1970s, thanks to pressures of juggling work and children.
Women are more than two-and-a-half times more likely than men to suffer from depression, especially during the "reproductive years" between 16 and 42 years. Women aged between 25 and 40 years, under "tremendous burden" of balancing home and family life, are three to four times more likely to become depressed than men. Prof Hans Ulrich Wittchen, study author from Dresden University of Technology, Germany, said both the genders were equally vulnerable to mental health problems but that some disorders affected one sex more than the other. He said: "Marriage appears to reduce the
risk of depression in males, for females it increases the risk." "In females, you see these incredibly high rates of depressive episodes at times when they sometimes have their babies, where they raise children, where they have to cope with the double responsibility of job and family." The study of 30 European countries including Britain, published by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, found that 164.8 million people - or 38.2 percent of the population - suffers from a mental disorder. All major mental health disorders were included, including depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, insomnia, addiction and schizophrenia.— IANS

Screen presence
Deepak Verma Connecting with people is fun, and mobile phones are offering colourful ways of connecting. Coloured screen is a jazzy option provided by mobile phone companies. Whether it is a simple 'on and off purpose' mobile or a hi-end one loaded with umpteen options, coloured screens definitely add a sparkle. And top it, colourful jackets is yet another option that can spice the calling experience. A bold screen with various patterns is what most users like to go for. Downloading wallpapers is passé. The best thing is to go for coloured display screens. The Corby mobile phone is one such device that believes in colour. It has a bi-colour cover that can be interchanged with funky patterns depending on how you want it to be. You can go for colourful jackets also which are fashionable and give an easy and firm hold. Available in various colours like vibrant pink, electric red, aqua blue, pearly white, night black, coloured jackets are a rage with youngsters. Men, however, don't find it is macho enough to carry mobile phones with coloured screens and colourful jackets. The other good thing about coloured screens are their display patterns. You can also create your own designs using various applications. Also available are colour options on the screen. Starting from as low as Rs 50 to Rs 500, these jackets can be purchased from any mobile dealer. As for the screens, most GSM mobiles have an option of coloured display along with other features like torch and backup light. Check out Olive V-G2100, it virtually paints your life in vivid colours. Nokia has discontinued the production of 7710 with coloured LCD screen. (Verma is a Delhi-based tech expert) |

There’s a Sea change
The sea is hundreds of kilometers away from the city. But the specialties of sea are closer home. Fish, prawns, lobsters and pomphrets come ‘swimming’ to the seafood lovers in the city. Although chicken tandoori and butter chicken remain the favourite pick in city menus, but seafood has also made the people drool and slurp.
If you want to revel in the southern twist, the malabari and chuttinad cuisine might be your choice. Malabari would tickle your tongue with tamarind taste while chuttinad would spice up your senses with the southern touch. Gassi is another specialty to go for. “Although these specialties are selling throughout the year, fish masala, fish kadai and tandoori are popular around this time in the city,” says Atul Chakravarti, manager at Swagath Restaurant. Jumbo prawns and squid, Bombay Duck are also the most sought after. Says Nitin Khera, who took to seafood only three years back, that he is a die-hard fan of seafood. I never used to like seafood, but ever since I tasted silver pomphret, any kind of seafood at least once a week is a norm for me now. Rajeev Bhatia, a resident of Dev Nagar prefers seafood over meat or chicken as it’s a healthier alternative. “Although taste-wise, nothing can beat the butter chicken and the fried leg pieces, but I now go for seafood more because it’s mostly fat-free” he says. “I take seafood because it’s a rich source of protein, iodine and is good for heart too,” says Binny Walia, who started having seafood after she started following a fitness regime. Park Plaza has a special menu with popular fish, lobsters, silver pomphret, squid and red snapper to offer to its customers.

Road to fitness
Tall and handsome Nishant Malkani has girls swooning over his fit body. However, the actor reveals that he does not always follow a strict diet. Check out what Nishant's fitness fundas are.
Why is fitness important? Fitness is important to keep both body as well as mind active. A person who is not fit is not capable of leading a healthy life. What fitness tips will you suggest to fans? My only suggestion will be that please don't be lazy. Sitting around will not get you fit. Go hit the gym and start exercising. It is the best way of getting rid of daily stress in life. Which exercises do you prefer and why? I follow a balanced exercise regime of cardio as well as weights, which my personal trainer has set for me. Having a personal trainer is important because I am not certified in the field of fitness. Just like you need a doctor to guide you about what treatment you require in the same way you need a personal trainer to guide you about the fitness regime that you should follow. Do you have any problem areas and how are you working on them? My only problem area is my back. I have a weak back and tend to suffer from injuries in my lower back. In our field we have to stand for hours and also perform all kinds of stunts. You need a strong back for this. What food items do you include in your diet and what do you avoid? I include food that is high in protein and also simple carbohydrates like fruits. I try to avoid complex carbohydrates like white bread, pizzas and rice in my diet. What are your guilty indulgences? I am a big foodie so there are days when I cheat on my diet. I eat everything from butter naan to vada pav and pav bhaji. I also have sudden craving for sweets and I eat
everything from chocolate pastries to cheesecakes (laughs). Which actors from TV or films have a good body? Salman Khan has the fittest body. His body is so good and manly. He may not always sport a six pack but his body looks much better than many people with a six pack. Nobody on TV has an admirable body.

Quiz time with Saumya
Saumya Tandon is clearly enjoying her role as a co-quiz master with Derek O' Brien in Bournvita Quiz Contest on Colors. We exchange roles with her as we quiz her about the show.
How is it hosting Bournvita Quiz Contest? Hosting BQC is very special. I have grown up seeing the show and aspiring to be one of the sharp kids. I couldn't be there but life has a special way of fulfilling wishes, I am on the show as a co- quiz master. What do you like about the show? The show is a pure unadulterated knowledge contest for bright students. It is about knowledge, competition and a lot of learning. How is Derek as a co-host? Derek is adorable as a person and extremely helpful and charming. It was a treat to work with him. Recently he has been elected as a Rajya Sabha MP and he is so passionate about this quiz. Do you test yourself by guessing answers posed to contestants? I did test myself and felt like I should go back to school (laughs). I realised that as we grow up, we forget all the things we read in the school. Are there any other projects that you are working on? Right now I am shooting for a LG Mallika-e-Kitchen on Colors. It's a cookery contest, I did the previous season as well and this is the third season of the show.

Katrina ironed out facts for him by saying, "Jay, agle janam mein main tumse shaadi karoongi." But Jay was not ready to let the opportunity go so easily and decided to play along. He said, "Agle janam is just a code word guys. Katrina and I will go on a date soon." Jay then joined Katrina as she shook a leg to Rimsha's performance and kept telling her in absolute awe, "Kats you are so beautiful!" After watching him trying his best to floor Katrina, Imran and Ali decided to teach him a lesson and asked him to propose to Katrina in a filmy style. Jay's heart was in his mouth when he heard this but decided to give a fair try. He went down on his knees and proposed to his favourite actor, "Will you marry me, Kats?" The rest as they say is history, coz the moment Jay got up, Kats gave him one tight slap'! Jay was too stunned to move while everybody on the sets burst into peals of laughter. All's well that ends well… Katrina thanked Jay for being such a sport! Jay hope the mystery girl in your life is not reading this article.
