Passenger killed
DERA BASSI, AUGUST 30 The deceased seemed to be 50 years old, who could not be identified. GRP officials said the body was recovered around 9 am from the tracks. The victim was wearing a white pant and white shirt. The police registered a case and sent the body for postmortem to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital, where it has been kept for 72 hours for the purpose of identification. |

One killed, 2 injured in accident
Ambala, August 30 The three members, who were resident of Badoli village in Kurukshetra district, were in the town to visit Mission Hospital, Ambala City, in connection with the interview of Pooja for the post of a nurse. The driver of the truck, who was going towards Rajpura, managed to flee from the accident site along with his vehicle, but was arrested by the ASI Harish Kumar, near Shambu barrier, in Punjab who chased the truck, which was impounded by the police. A case has been registered against the driver and the body of the victim was sent to the Civil Hospital for the postmortem.

2 get life term for murder
Chandigarh, August 30 The court awarded life term to Karamvir and Varun of Dadu Majra. The accused had stabbed a fruit seller to death near the Dadu Majra Colony. They had dragged Rajesh, the victim, to a secluded place, robbed him of cash and stabbed him repeatedly. The police had registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC, but converted it to Section 302 and Section 34 after the victim was declared dead. |

BKU leader’s bail plea dismissed
Panchkula, August 30 In his anticipatory bail application, Guni had pleaded that he was being falsely implicated in this case. However, the police in its reply stated that Guni, along with three of his accomplices, had conspired to implicate Ashok, Soni, Randeep, all residents of Pharal village in Kaithal district, and his political opponent Ratanmaan, a resident of Karnal, in a criminal case. The police further stated that the pistol, which was used in the crime, was actually bought by Guni Prakash, therefore, custodial interrogation of Guni was required to find out the place from where the pistol was bought. In this case, the police had already arrested accused Ramsarup, Sukhbir and Ombir. Fourth accused Guni was undergoing a treatment for a bullet injury at the PGI. Guni was admitted to the hospital with a bullet injury on his shoulder on July 31. He had alleged that Ashok, Soni, Randeep and Ratanmaan, along with another unidentified person, had attacked him. The police, however, found out that all accused were at their houses within an hour of the incident. Even the locations of their mobile phones were found to be in their respective village areas at the time of the incident. According to the police, on the night of July 31 Sukhbir injured Guni by firing a bullet shot on his shoulder at Barwala. |

Constable’s mobile phone stolen
Chandgarh, August 30 Constable Sewa, attached with the prisoner cell of the UT Police, found his cell phone to be stolen when he was in district courts today. The police said Sewa was on duty in the courts when an unidentified youth stole his cell phone. As he called on his phone, the person on the other side failed to respond. A case of theft was registered at the Sector 17 police station. On April 25, a challan book, a walky-talky set and a cell phone of head constable Om Parkash was stolen from the Grain Market in Sector 26. |

Man crushed to death
Chandigarh, August 30 The body of the person, appearing to be in his fifties, was found in a mutilated state on the road in the wee hours of Tuesday. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The Government Railway Police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. The police said the deceased was sleeping on a pavement and was crushed by a truck. |

Chandigarh, August 30 In the first semifinal of boys (U-17), St Soldier defeated St Anne’s School, Sector 32, 4-0. In a one-sided match, St Soldier scored through Parseej (fifth), Vishwajeet (14th), Abhijeet (19th) and Sumit sealed the team’s victory in the 25th minute of the game. In another semifinal, St Xavier’s School defeated St Kabir School-26

Chandigarh, August 30 In the final match, Government Model High School defeated the rivals 29-28, while Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Sector 40, secured the third place after defeating DAV Model School, Sector 15, 21-19. Blue and pink astroturf planned
Chandigarh, August 30 As blue turf and pink border will be used in the 2012 London Olympics Games, the authorities thought of getting the astroturf painted in blue and pink. The project will be completed by year-end. The stadium will have all modern facilities, including the seating capacity of 16,000. “It will have floodlights and other facilities matching the international standards,” said Pargat Singh, director, sports, Punjab, and chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of Hockey, India.k “An amount of Rs 110 crore is being spent on the project. Stadia in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, Mohali and Faridkot will also be upgraded, where the seating capacity will vary from 12,000 to 18,000,” said Pargat. |
