The recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week showcased some unique trends in fashion. However, it may have little impact on the bridal couture in this region, feel Chandigarh designers
Mona

As the curtains draw on the four-day extravaganza, Lakme Fashion Week - Winter/Festive 2011, the fashion fraternity is abuzz with the latest in the fashion scene. A kaleidoscope of colour, silhouettes and styles, the show has been a unique blend, courtesy, each designer's desire to be different.

We check out with our city designers what was it that clicked with them! Just back from the action in Mumbai, Ritu Kochhar, corporate director, INIFD, gives her take. "It was a curious blend of different styles. From long kalidar kurtis in the western look (Kareena sported one in off-white with silver work as Manish Malhotra's show stopper) to short knitted dresses, tight pants and dhoti salwars, different flowing styles ruled the ramp."

The same 'free will' extended to fabrics as well. Georgettes and nets were hot on the ramp as well off it. Velvet also registered its presence in Sabyasachi's creations.

When it comes to colours, however, there was a change, points out Mini, from Bling, "Blues that were hot last season are nowhere to be seen. It's comeback time for magenta, orange and turquoise. The hot fuchsia-orange contrast is hugely in."

As much for Indian wear, even the western wear was rich in using traditional crafts. Prabhbip Brar, assistant professor, University Institute of Fashion Technology, gives a thumbs up to collections by Chandigarh-based Raman Vij and her students Jai-Parvesh. "Structured knit dresses and smart jumpsuits are a trend that I vouch for. For they are no more dull and drab but experimental, with a zing in it," she says.

Babi Grewal found the show repetitive. One thing that caught her attention was long kalidars with achkans. Does the fashion week make an impact on the bridal collection in city? "Well, by this time, the collections by most designer for the wedding season are ready," puts in Babi.

And, more than the fashion weeks, it's the Bollywood that influences fashion scene. Says Mini, "I am inundated with offers to create three coloured ensembles- a different colour for kurti, salwar and duppatta like the ones sported by Kareena in yet to release flick Bodyguard."

Well, it's God's plenty as they say!

Go VIVID

Contrast is the name of the game

Team up purple pants with mustard top or off white lehenga with red choli and green duppatta. The unifying factor can be the embroidery or a brocade border.

Nets, georgette, velvet…

For evening outings, georgette or net are the preferred fabrics. For winter weddings, it's velvet that makes a comeback.

Bling is on big time…

Make most of the Indian embroideries, zari, gota patti. It's the season of opulence, so make your ensemble as heavy as possible.

SUCCESS MANTRA
A baker's love story…
Mona

Nikhil Mittal's face is an integral part of Nik Baker's logo. In just about five years, this brand has registered its presence and become one of Chandigarh's favourites when it comes to cakes. But success has not come overnight. Years of vision and dedication have gone into making what it is today. Nik shares with us his sweet story …

"Ever since my childhood, I have had a sweet tooth. Having cakes here I would dream of what cakes would taste like in London or Paris," shares Nik over a cup of cappuccino in his bustling Sector 35 outlet. It was his father who channelised his love for cakes and goaded him into the right direction. A year's course in bakery, some training in one of the India's best hotels and Nik was off to Australia for a course in patisserie.

Five years of studying and working in Adelaide, Australia, a visit back home made him give a shot at bakery business. Five years hence, Nik has two thriving outlets in Chandigarh. He is going to open one in Panchkula next week and will open his bakery institute next month. Also plans are in the offing to open a retail outlet in each metro in the country and he's already training a team that will man operations in Canada. He shares with us attributes that he thinks got him success in a short span.

Follow a vision: "It's important to have a clear picture of what you want to achieve," says Nik. In his case, it was his father who set out the path for him. "My father put my picture as part of the logo, just like Colonel Sanders (KFC). I did not believe in the idea to start with," he shares. But seeing the phenomenal response to his venture, he is proud of it now.

Give your 100 per cent: "Once the path is clear, follow it with utmost dedication. Gain the necessary expertise, take stock of the market and put your experience into practice," says Nik who literally breathes bakery. Apart from baking (of course he cannot bake each of his much demanded cakes), he loves training, and is writing a book and planning a cookery show. He works 24X7 and takes pride in it.

Build a team: Rome wasn't built in a day and neither by a single person. Nik has been cultivating his own team slowly and successfully. He has enlisted his own family. His brother Nitin looks after the drinks menu, the most popular cake at the bakery Chocolate Praline comes from wife Charon's kitchen. And in the two state of the art plants the chefs, carefully groomed by Nik, run the show.

Offer something different: "What makes Nik Baker's different is the range of products that we have," says Nik who has 250 plus products to offer. A bakery caters essentially to breakfast menu, and, Nik has tried to get the best from Australian, German and Italian flavours with an Indian twist.

Be the best and be consistent: "Our products are perishable, so we have to be on guard when it comes to quality," says Nik. Work is at its peak from eight in the night and by nine next morning freshly baked stuff reaches the stores. "It was a challenge to procure the quality ingredients when we started. We had to face tough times but over the years it's becoming easier," shares Nik who believes in taking challenges head on.

"It's a bakery that runs with my blood and I am all set to achieve newer milestones," says Nik with a winsome smile.

Not sexy enough!

Hollywood producer Paul Breuls has claimed that British actresses can't be sexy as they are too inhibited. Tinseltown's most respected producer has revealed that although British actresses may be the most sought after, yet starlets like Gemma Arterton, Emma Watson, Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall cannot be sexy as they are very inhibited.

The producer of Devil's Double, a biopic of Saddam Hussein's sadistic eldest son Uday, had considered some British as well as Hollywood's most celebrated actresses for the role of Sarrab—Uday's intensely sexual concubine and the film's leading female role.

Sadly Breuls decided the British actresses weren't sexy enough and chose French actress Ludivine Sagnier instead.

"The role is very demanding sexually and it's difficult to find actresses who are willing to take that leap into the sexual unknown, especially in the States or in England," he said. "Ludivine Sagnier has done some of the most sensual work in French film. She's uninhibited,” Breuls added. — ANI

The bunker shot

There are a few variables in playing the bunker shot. One must understand the reasons for these variables and be able to choose the ones that work for our individual styles. The first being the point of contact with the sand. Some players prefer to hit the sand approximately two inches behind the ball and vary the distance the ball flies by changing the club. They could use a lob wedge for the close shots, a sand wedge for the medium distances and a pitching wedge for the longer bunker shots.

Another kind of player could play different distances with the same club but hit only an inch behind the ball for the longer bunker shots and take a lot of sand - more than two inches for the closer shots. This could be risky for players who are not consistent with their impact. The first method would be easier for weekend and infrequent golfers who do not have a lot of time for practice. To be consistent only put one variable into the shot - either one-impact approximately two inches behind the ball and different clubs or one clubs and variable impact positions. Do not have variable clubs and variable impact positions.

The second variable is the position of the club face at address and subsequently at impact. We use an open club face at impact so that the bounce of the club works in the sand. Why is this necessary and what does bounce do? If the sharp leading edge of the club hits the sand it tends to dig deeper into the sand and the club loses speed. With an open face and the bounce working the club slides through the sand and tries to come upwards and therefore does not dig too deep into the sand. This works very much like the front of a ski which is curved upwards so that the ski does not dig into snow or water. Earlier, sand wedges had a lot of bounce or a curved sole with the leading edge much higher than the middle of the sole. With these clubs it was not really necessary to open the face. These clubs were mainly used in the bunkers.

As the greens got faster the requirement of backspin increased and players were forced to play sand wedges from the fairways. On the harder lies it became impossible to hit with a sand wedge with bounce as this would top the ball. So the amount of bounce on clubs was reduced and this has made it necessary to open the face in bunker shots. One should have a sand wedge with some bounce (high bounce) and a lob wedge with less bounce (low bounce) which should be used on tighter lies on the fairway. Use the sand wedge with adequate bounce in the bunker.

House full
DJ Ashish Nagpal's music is all about House, electro or funky
Manpriya Khurana

It's either an abbreviation or some twisted initials or a wackier, wilder version of a name. When it comes to disc-jockeys and their stage identities, unusual is the key. So, when a nice and neat name is tossed around, it in fact merits a mention. Laughs DJ Ashish Nagpal, "I never felt the need to give into the trend and tweak my name. I like things simple and straight and that's how my music is."

Speaking of which, his music that is, it's House for one. "Though I play all kinds, but if you ask me what is my kind of music, then it's House music-- electro and funky House. That's apart from the commercial music," he adds, in Chandigarh to play at Tao.

"Chandigarh is receptive to all sorts of music. For example, if you play an old track in Delhi, it might not be taken well. But Chandigarh crowd understands retro." He sums up his five visits to the city, "First time I came here in 2008, and there have been lots of changes since then. Of course, the club scene is not as big as Delhi or Mumbai. But it's picked up a lot. Of course, Bollywood and Punjabi still dominate, but the crowd is open to music. I took over the microphone a lot many times to explain and they received all sorts of music well."

When he's not playing for anyone else, it's soft tracks and Progressive House with a lot of funky beats that make it to his playlist. "I like a lot of pop too, Kylie and Madonna are my favourites. Then there're the tracks by Whigfield." He adds, "Whatever you personally listen to, finally somehow reflects in what you play. There needs to be this knack for music to become a good DJ."

He adds, "I did my MBA in 2005 but I got into deejaying during my graduation. I was a drummer throughout my school life. You do need training, but training doesn't make you a disc jockey."

Currently a freelancer, his last job was as a resident DJ with Delhi's F-Bar. "I'm finalising a deal with a couple of Bollywood producers. I really want to introduce B-town to House music with the funky touch to it. There's an album in the pipeline which will again have Bollywood with a lot of international feel to it." So far so good. As for the city, he's under "a contract to do a gig a month, hopefully many more visits to the place ensue."

Tying the knot with weight

Are you getting married or divorced? Well, it can affect your waistline according to a new research. According to researchers, who used survey data on more than 10,000 people to investigate whether marriage and divorce led to weight gain or loss.

Women tend to gain weight after their wedding day while men are most affected by marital breakdown.

Says study leader Dmitry Tumin, Ohio State University, US, "Divorces for men and, to some extent, marriages for women promote weight gains that may be large enough to pose a health risk."

The likelihood of major weight gain after marriage or divorce increased most for people past the age of 30.

Shares Tumin, a doctoral student in sociology "For someone in their mid-20s there is not much difference in the probability of gaining weight between someone who just got married and someone who never married." She adds, "But later in life, there is much more of a difference." — ANI

A FORCE TO RECKONN WITH

Action director Allan Amin says he has extracted hard work from John Abraham in the upcoming film Force, where the actor will be seen performing some breathtaking action scenes without the use of body double and cables. Abraham has an image of a Casanova onscreen but Amin, who has worked with the actor in Dhoom earlier, says the film will launch the actor as an action hero.

Shares Amin "I have worked with John in Dhoom and his much improved body has led me to portray him in Bollywood's first realistic action film without the use of cables. He has done all the actions fabulously."

He adds,"John's toned and strong body is apt for the film. Though I feel it is not important to have abs to do action but if the actor has it there is nothing bad in it. It increases the visual appeal."

The action director, who started his career with Southern films and made his Bollywood debut with Bekhudi, is the man behind the sleek action in films like Dhoom 2 and Singh is Kinng.

Force will see Abraham lifting a 150 kilogram bike, jumping from a 150 feet high cliff onto an air bag and climbing up a speeding train.

"John will be seen doing action scenes which he hasn't done before. Unlike the usual trend of hiring stuntmen and using cables for all the tough stunts, he has done it all by himself. It's all real," Amin said. —PTI

Cupid comes calling

Isn't it fun playing cupid for friends and family? Making plans to get two people together is exciting. Our TV stars too have tried their hand at playing cupid, while some have succeeded others were disasters. The stars recall their experiences and share it with us.

Priya Chauhan

I am from Shimla, so I have some really good looking friends back there. I remember once a friend had seen a photograph and requested me to introduce him to one of my friends from Shimla but she was not single. Then there was another incident where I tried playing cupid by arranging meetings between a guy and one of my friends whom he had fallen for. Unfortunately, she never understood that he loves her even after we tried dropping many hints. In fact she is still unaware of it (laughs) but I love getting people together it's a wonderful thing to do.

Vishal Karwal

I recall playing cupid for a friend when I was in college in Chandigarh. He had a crush on one of my classmates, so we came up with a plan according to which I took the girl to a restaurant and asked the guy to come there too. I pretended to be surprised to see him there and introduced him to the girl. They became friends and later the girl too fell in love with my friend. It has been quite a few years now and they are still very much in love. Whenever they have a fight, both of them call me to complain about each other and I think kahan phas gaya (laughs).

Parneet Bhatt

I have a close friend who had broken up with her boyfriend and I had never met the guy. Even though she had broken up with him she would keep talking about him every time we met. One day, we were at a party where I got drunk and again she spoke about her boyfriend. I was really irritated and literally pushed her in my car and asked her to take me to her boyfriend's house. I asked the guy what the problem is and he told us that he still loves her a lot and wants her back in his life. My friend got emotional hearing this and they immediately patched up. It's been over a year now that they are married. They still thank me for getting them back together but I feel that it was God's will and I was just his messenger. I am happy that God chose me to play cupid for the couple.

Aditya Redij

During college days, my friends and I were naďve, we had no idea about how to approach a girl. I was in Symbiosis college and one of my friends fell in love with a girl from the neighbouring BMCT college. Somehow, I came up with this crazy idea and told him that we will visit her college on a bike and that he should throw a love note towards her the moment he sees her. As we went to implement our plan, my friend threw the note and it mistakenly hit the girl's face. It was very embarrassing and my friend did not have the guts to face her after that.

Melanie Pais

I have tried getting a lot of friends together and luckily most of my attempts have been successful. I remember this couple who had split due to stupid and petty issues and my friends and I decided to play cupid for them. I called the girl and another friend brought the guy to a common place. Both of them were unaware of each others' presence and kept cribbing about each other. However the moment they saw each other, they forgot everything and flew into each other's arms. That was really a romantic moment.

Madhura Naik

I am currently in the process of playing cupid for my friend Priya Wal who plays Misha in Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahaani. I have chosen a guy for her but she has not met him yet. I keep telling her to meet him and hope that she does it soon. So let's see if my attempt at playing cupid turns out to be a success.

Sukirti Kandpal

I did not try my hand at playing cupid for others but luckily someone did the same for me. Destiny played cupid for me in the form of my boyfriend Rishabh and I am glad it did.

Sara Khan

I call myself cupid queen because I always make people realise how much they love each other and get them together. If I have to share one instance, then it will be about my close friends, singer Lucky Ali and his wife Inaya. Even though they love each other, they fight like cats and dogs and every time, there is a fight both of them come cribbing to me. Inaya comes to meet me while Lucky messages me about the fight. I try to help both at the same time and of course one is not aware that I am helping the other too. After the issue is solved, I always get a message from both thanking me for playing cupid and getting them back together (laughs).
