CME on urology
The Patiala Chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), led by its president Dr Jatinder Kansal, organised a continuous medical education (CME) programme on “Newer Horizons in Urology” for its members here on Monday. Dr Varinder Dhankar, a specialist in urology, highlighted modern medical and surgical approach to treat various types of kidney, urinary bladder and urinary system disorders.
He also dwelled on various corrective medical and surgical methods to treat impotence, and the side effects associated with modern medications. The scientific session was chaired by Dr Avinash Goyal and Dr RK Jindel. Punjab Medical Council president Dr Manhohan Singh, IMA’s Dr DS Bhullar, Dr Janak Sachdeva, Dr BK Chopra, Dr JPS Sodhi, Dr DC Sharma and Dr Sachinn Kaushal were among 200 who attended the
programme.

Pedestrian killed
Lalru, August 22
The victim was going on foot when the truck knocked him down, killing him on the spot. He was employed at a nearby sand store and was returning home after work. The driver fled the scene. The body was handed over to the deceased’s relatives after a post-mortem examination at the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. A case has been registered against the unknown driver.

16 get trapped in swollen Kaushalya
Kalka, August 22 While five youths trapped in the river were on a picnic, the others had gone to a temple near the river to pay their obeisance. According to sources, incessant rain in the higher reaches resulted in a sudden rise in the water level of the river around 6 pm, giving little opportunity to those in the river to escape. The victims raised the alarm, following which a team of 50 CRPF personnel headed by Deputy Commandant Sanjay Gautam arrived at the scene and saved five youths — Jaswant Singh, Ashish, Amit, Kasim and Hasim — of Pinjore with the help of a rope. Eleven others — Mahavir Rana, Krishan Lal, Mohan Lal, Geeta, Ritu, Jimmi, Pankaj, Aman and Manish — from the surrounding areas also got stuck in the river. They had gone to pay obeisance at Shivlotian Temple on the bank of the river. They were also rescued by the CRPF team. Ambala doctor held on rape charge
Ambala, August 22 The police today produced the doctor in a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. According to the police, the woman had gone to the doctor’s clinic to get some treatment last evening. While she was on her way to a toilet located on the clinic premises, the doctor allegedly pushed her
into his bedroom and raped her. Sources said certain influential persons of Ambala City attempted to negotiate a settlement
but the woman was adamant on filing a complaint of rape against the doctor. The woman alleged that the doctor raped her and later when she escaped from the clinic, she approached the police. The medical examination of the doctor and the woman was conducted at the Ambala City Civil Hospital this afternoon. On the woman’s complaint, the police has registered a case of rape against the doctor. Meanwhile, the doctor refuted the woman’s charges and said certain people who wanted to grab his land had hatched a conspiracy against him. |

NAAC team visits SD College
Ambala, August 22 The team validated the re-accreditation report submitted by the college on aspects like the teaching-learning process, governance and leadership, research and consultancy and best practices, etc. It also interacted with the college faculty, non-teaching staff, students, parents and alumni. Based on the recommendations of the team, the college will be awarded with a grade by NAAC. The Haryana Government has made it compulsory for all universities and colleges of the state to get accreditation. The process was first carried out throughout the country in 2003. In the second phase, institutes of higher education were volunteering for re-accreditation now. The team members included Prof N Sundararajan, Vice-Chancellor, Jain University, Bangalore, Dr Sudipti Banerjee, former chairman of commerce department, and MPR Lyngdoh, former principal, Shillong College,

Principal honoured
Charles J Osta, principal, Indian Public School, Ambala Cantonment, was honoured with the “Best Educationist Award” and a “Certificate of Excellence” during a ceremony at Krishna Menon Bhawan, New Delhi, on August 12. Statue unveiled
A statue of Kargil martyr GD Dhindsa was unveiled by Ram Kishan Foji, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Haryana, on the premises of Government Senior Secondary School, Pinjore, here. In his address, Foji stressed the need for curbing female foeticide.
He urged students to draw inspiration from martyrs and work for the uplift of the nation. He said the state government had raised the freedom fighters’ allowance from Rs 11,000 to Rs 15,000. A blood donation camp was also organised. Eighty persons donated blood. OC |
Man dies as SUV rams into truck
Mohali, August 22 The police said the incident took place when the victim along with his friend Jaswant Singh, a resident of Ropar, was going towards their native village in an SUV. As they approached Khanpur village, a speeding truck overtook their vehicle and then braked suddenly. The SUV rammed into the truck even as its driver braked hard to avoid a collision. The occupants of the SUV were taken the Civil Hospital. However, they were later shifted to the PGI, Chandigarh, where Vijay died during treatment. The police has registered a case against the unknown driver of the truck and started its investigation. |

Servant nabbed from Bihar
Panchkula, August 22 The accused, Akhilesh, had fled after killing 65-year-old Shanti Devi. He had also injured her daughter-in-law Isha and her two daughters. Soon after the incident, a police team headed by sub-inspector Harvinder Singh of the CIA staff was dispatched to the accused’s village in Gaya district. Akhilesh was arrested from his home where he had gone after committing the crime. Robberies on autos: Man held
Chandigarh, August 22 It arrested the accused, Laxmi Kant, who along with his accomplice, had robbed an apple merchant, Gian Singh of Shimla, and a student of the PU when they were in their auto-rickshaw. His accomplice, Shamji of Kajheri village, Sector 36, is absconding. The police said the accused disclosed that two of their targets were looking for prostitutes when they approached him at the ISBT-43. Laxmi then realised that they had huge money and decided to rob them. The two had robbed apple merchant Gian Singh of Rs 36,000 and a cheque of Rs 1.35 lakh from near sector 25 on August 15. They also attacked him in the process with a knife. Similarly, the accused also tried to rob PU UIET student Shikha Mittal on the dividing road of Sector 14 and Sector 25, but failed in their attempt. A resident of Sector 27 was also robbed on August 18 in Sector 37 but he had not intimated the police. Both victims were drunk when they were robbed. ASP Desraj Singh said the police recovered one auto, a cycle rickshaw, two robbed cell phone and a cash of Rs 12,000 from his possession. |

Youth threatens to end life
Chandigarh, August 22 He then threatened his family that he will commit suicide if his elder brother failed to apologise to him. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and persuaded him to come down after half-and-hour. Jaipreet, Vijay lift I-Day Cup
Chandigarh, August 22 The final appeared to be leaning towards a one-sided affair, with Ekam bowing out due to injury, leaving Binny to battle it out alone. It was no cakewalk for the winning duo. At the turn Jaipreet and Vijay had taken a two-hole lead.
