SPOOKED OUT: Students of PU School of Communication Studies

First day at college or university - what’s on your mind? The faculty or long lectures? Maybe! But chances are that most of your mind space will be occupied by the seniors you will encounter and the freshers’ party they will throw for you!

Different colleges in Chandigarh and various departments at the Panjab University are gearing up to welcome the juniors. The preparations include deciding the venue, which is obviously a disc, a wacky theme, dress code and prizes for Mr and Ms Fresher.

The second-year students of School of Communication Studies, PU, have come up with a special theme. For the past two years as well, they have shown their creativity through out-of-the-box themes like Kindergarten and Halloweens. Shares Ashima Chhabra, second-year student from SCS, “The theme we have decided for our juniors is ‘Superheroes and Supergirls’. We have collected necessary funds for that and the venue will most probably be Blade.” She adds, “We will also be giving some accessories related to the theme and gifts for Mr. Fresher, which will be a tie and cuff links, and a perfume for Ms. Fresher.”

The dentistry students from Punjab University are looking beyond cavities and are planning a rocking party. Samira Kaur, second-year BDS student, PU says, “There is a lot of enthusiasm when it comes to deciding about the freshers’ party. But, there are some disinterested people who don’t contribute money, so the sad part is that we have to take some contribution from our juniors.” She adds, “The venue is likely to be Arizona disc and the theme will be prom night.”

There is also an official welcome party by various colleges. Says Aakriti, second-year psychology student, MCM College, “We have already had our combined welcome party for the juniors. With no specific theme, there was a fashion show where the Ms Fresher was crowned.” She adds, “Though it is always fun to have welcome parties in discs, but even on college campus it is fun.”

Kuber Malik, third-year student law student at PU, shares, “Every year we have our freshers’ party at the law auditorium and the themes for the last two years were ‘Gangsters and Dames’ and ‘Nerds’. Though we are yet to decide on the theme for the upcoming party, juniors should be ready for some crazy fun.”

So seniors, get ready to put your best foot forward!

success mantra
The Queen Bee!
Minna Zutshi

She’s young. She’s glamorous. And she has a mind of her own. That sounds like the stereotype of a successful woman, but Ritu Kapoor prefers steering clear of all stereotypes. She’s the director of the Kashmir Apiaries Private Limited at Doraha in Ludhiana.

Ritu takes her role seriously. To make sure that hers was not the case of inheriting a silver spoon, she worked as a human resources executive at her father’s company for close to one year. Her father owns the Kashmir Group of Apiaries. “It was a valuable learning experience. It made me understand ground realities. I had workers and their families confiding in me. Had I started my business venture as a director, I would have denied myself an insider’s view,” she says.

Her next role was that of a facilitator for the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) that were being implemented in the Kashmir Apiaries. “I learnt that change is not very easy for people. Some take it grudgingly. Others accept it reluctantly. And many have serious reservations about it.” Crowned the ‘Honey Bee Queen’ at the 41 Apimondia International Beekeeping Conference in 2009, she’s the brand ambassador for Apimondia, which is the world council of the bee keepers.

She’s also working on a project related to modernisation of the bee-keeping techniques. Kapoor’s success mantras are refreshingly simple and sweet. Is this ‘sweetness’ courtesy the honey business that she handles? Her answer is disarmingly frank: “My success mantras have that ‘Art of Living (AOL)’ touch to them, because I’m an AOL teacher as well.” Here are the lady’s mantras for success.

Be ready to take risks

It’s the risk-taking ability that sets apart a leader from a follower. Many people just want to stick to the ‘given’ because they are afraid of walking the path less taken.

Innovate, keep innovating

If you cannot be innovative, at least be different.

A team player never loses

I have seen it in my own case. You cannot achieve success if you ignore your team.

Give your 100 per cent to what you do, even if your work is seemingly inconsequential

Half-hearted efforts lead you nowhere.

A positive attitude and an open mind definitely help

If you’re not willing to smile away your worries, you invite a string of failures. So be happy and wear a big, warm smile on your face.

Creating wealth from waste
Vasudha Gupta

Chandigarh currently houses a major chunk of the NRI population, which lives all over the world. But how many of them are willing to take a step ahead and make a difference to their hometown? Harsimar Singh is one such young girl. Living in Canada, she brought the idea of making a difference among the youth and created an organistion by them.

Keeping her faith in the ideology to uplift underprivileged children, Harsimar's Child and Youth Friendly Chandigarh on Tuesday organised an interactive session among 20 children of the SOS Village Rajpura with none other than Nek Chand. The young children were taught the basic concepts of recycling and making wealth out of waste. Sharing his experience about the same, Nek Chand says, "It is a learning experience for me when I teach young children how to recycle things. They tend to improvise and innovate." Since utilisation of waste is one of the most significant ways to reduce pollution, Nek Chand feels that the example has been created and now depends upon the youth to continue the efforts towards it.

Sharing her thoughts on the NGO, Harsimar says, "NGOs are a very common concept. The idea is to make an impact." Here's hoping the grand old concept of recycling finds more takers.

Listen to the rain!

The Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi and Indian National Theatre are jointly organising Varsha Ritu Sangeet Sandhya to celebrate the monsoon season.

Hindustani classical music has created the most poignant compositions about the rainy season. These have been set to ragas that conjure up a wide range of rich emotions-majestic (veer rasa), yet full of pathos (karuna), joyful (sringar), yet plunged in loneliness (viraha-sringar).

The chief representative ragas of the monsoons are those from the Malhar family—Shudh Malhar, Megh Malhar, Desh Malhar and Gaud Malhar. From these rose other derivative Malhars. Experts say that the word Malhar itself signifies "that which washes away the dirt". Saili Kalyanpur, a leading disciple of Ashwini Bhide Deshpande of Jaipur Atrauli Gharana will present the ragas of the season on August 20.

At Jaisukhlal Hathi Sadan, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan-27, 6:30 pm onwards

Khan-phobia
I'm terrified of working with SRK: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif
Back-to-back: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif will be seen in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan with Imran Khan, Ek Tha Tiger with Salman Khan, and a romantic film with Shah Rukh Khan. She talks about working with the Khans and doing back-to-back Yash Raj films.

Young vs seniors

You cannot compare working with Salman and Akshay to working with Ranbir and Imran. It is very different. Senior actors are very good at what they do which is why they are still ruling the industry. There is so much to learn from their zest, enthusiasm, and experience. As far as Imran and Ranbir, are concerned, we are pretty much the same age. When we meet on the sets, he kicks me and we can joke around with each other.

Speechless!

I didn't grow up watching Shah Rukh's films and he didn't see me when I was growing up (smiles). I am excited about working with him but also terrified. I have to deliver my lines and I don't know how I will do it. The director is going to tell me to look longingly at him and I really hope words come out of mouth. The other day I met him at an event and wanted to tell him something but the words didn't come out of my mouth.

Phase-Yash Raj

I think it is just a co-incidence that I am doing back-to-back films with YRF. I have such phases. There was a time when I did back-to-back films with Vipul Shah. I vibed well Kabir Khan during New York and he spoke to me about Ek Tha Tiger at that time and I agreed to do it. Abbas Ali Zafar, the director of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, has been a friend and he assisted on New York. It was natural for him to take his script to YRF to produce it. I feel very lucky to be in a movie directed by Yash Chopra.

Comic turn

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is an over-the-top comedy like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. I am comfortable in the genre but Imran took a while getting used to it. The movie is also in the vein of Chupke Chupke. It is a fun film.

Madding crowd

If sources are to be believed, Kareena Kapoor is a tad miffed with Katrina Kaif being part of Bodyguard and Priyanka Chopra being part of Ra.One. She is very clear about doing solo heroine films and her rivals have a cameo and/or song in both the potential blockbusters.

Work-in-progress!

Bodyguard is releasing this Eid which means two weeks later. The film is still being shot. Salman is shooting 14-16 hours a day and everybody is super-motivated to complete the film in time for its release. The song promos are on air and promotions will begin next week. It is a given that it will be a blockbuster ala Dabangg and Wanted which also released on Eid.

Absolute-ly gorgeous

Kareena Kapoor has been signed on as the face of Lakme's Absolute range. She is finale designer Manish Malhotra's muse and her Absolute look will be unveiled at the grand finale on August 21. Usually, the Lakme finale shows don't have celebrity showstoppers because the Lakme faces take centrestage. With Manish and Kareena, things will be different. —HRM

Ebony and ivory

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who will marry rocker Kris Humphries on August 20, has reportedly asked the wedding guests to wear black or white colours for her marriage.

Kim, who will wear a Vera Wang gown for her marriage, does not want to 'blend in' with friends and family at the ceremony. "Kim knows better than anyone how to stay dramatic and there is no way she would let herself blend in with everyone else at her wedding by wearing a white dress," a website quoted a source as saying. "If I know her, I bet she will wear red or some colour so she pops against everyone else who will be in black or white," the source added. — IANS

Once bitten, twice shy

Actor Selena Gomez, who is said to have parted ways with teen pop sensation Justin Bieber, has vowed never to change herself for a guy again.

"I wasn't myself for a year. I think that was really damaging. I felt like it was me who was always trying to be perfect for him," a website quoted the 19-year-old as saying. "Everyone around me hated him but I didn't listen. I think I had to go through it because now I'm the strongest I've been. I dare someone try and change me again," she added. Selena also admits that she lost her sense of fun until her romance with Bieber was over. "I always dressed nice. I don't think he ever saw me in sweatpants - and I love sweatpants. I'd always be well-mannered and go to his favourite restaurants or whatever. There was a point where I lost myself completely," said the actor. "And when that one ended, I didn't know where I was," she added. —IANS

Anushka Sharma Pancake problem

Last week, there was a story about Katrina and Anushka fighting over a make-up man.

At a recent interview, Katrina said, "I have met Anushka and she is a lovely girl who is just starting out. I have been in the industry for a while. I am not asking that people should glorify me but I expect them to give me a certain amount of respect. I understand if somebody sees me with a guy and writes stories but I have no idea where the make-up story came from. I think I am well-behaved."

Deepika Padukone Not so good, not so bad

The reviews for Aarakshan have been average and the movie hasn't really hit the mark. Deepika couldn’t save the film. It has been a disappointment. Watch it, if you must, for Amitabh Bachchan.

Flavours from Rajasthan

Photo: Himanshu Mahajan

If you want to celebrate saawan in the traditional manner and give loads to your tastebuds to savour, the best place to be is the Punj Spice at Park Plaza where the ongoing Rajasthani Food Festival— Raseelo rajwado padharo mahare desh— brings the royal taste from the state for you!

As one digs into the sumptuous Rajasthani food, one realises that the secret behind these curries is rooted in pulses or gram flour. This reminds you of the rich dry fruits, spices and yoghurt used abundantly in such delicacies. The food also boasts of sun-dried snacks - be it dal baati and churma or the missi roti.

The gram flour provides crispness and is used in delicacies like gatte ki sabzi, pakodi; powdered lentils are used for preparing mangodi and papad. Bajra and corn are used for making rabdi, khichdi and roti. To add some extra flavour, one can choose from various chutneys made from spices like turmeric, coriander, mint and garlic.

Last but not the least, there are desserts like Mawa Kachori from Jodhpur, Malpuas from Pushkar, Rasogullas from Bikaner, and Ghevar from Jaipur. The man behind the delicacies is Master Chef Chhaina Ram Parmar from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The authentic Rajasthani food can be relished till August 21 at a price of Rs 695 for vegetarian food and Rs 795 for non-vegetarian.

Sukriti Khandpal
Starry eyed: Sukriti Khandpal

Sukirti Kandpal, the pretty Piya from Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahaani is truly, madly and deeply in love with beau Rishabh Jain in real life. She is glad that destiny brought them together. We get Sukirti to speak about her boyfriend and share her views on love, romance, dating and marriage. The actress also laughs off a recent incident where some random fan uploaded pictures with her claiming to be her boyfriend.

What was your reaction after the recent incident where some fan uploaded pictures with you and claimed to be your boyfriend?

Rishabh and I were taken aback by this incident. It is funny how people want to claim to be my boyfriend and post pictures too. I guess they can now see who my real boyfriend is and that will put an end to the extremely hilarious drama about who Rishabh Jain is.

What do you like about Rishabh and what annoys you about him?

What I like about Rishabh is that he is a very hardworking guy. I haven't met another guy yet who works as much as him at 25. Rishabh's construction company was started by him alone and it makes me very proud of him. Sometimes he makes cute faces, which are so adorable and he drives his cars superbly too. He's a complete package. Cuteness, hard work and thrill all in one. I dislike his habit of smoking and not taking care of himself, which gives him a lot of health problems. Also sometimes, he thinks my hemlines are too high and I wear really short skirts (laughs).

What do you think he likes and dislikes about you?

I think what annoys him about me is for sure that at I don't answer anything in one go and he has to ask me the same thing repeatedly. I know he will have a big smile on his face after reading this. I would like to tell him that often he asks so many questions that I tend to forget. You will have to ask him what he likes about me, I can't answer that.

Do you believe in the concept of love at first sight?

Probably not. I don't believe in love at first sight because love is a very big thing for me. I think first sight is about looks and looks have never been enough to make me go weak in my knees. It's such a pity that a lot of nice looking men either have no personality or are so full of themselves that they don't know they are repelling the girls (laughs). As a fact, the first few years of knowing Rishabh, I never spoke much to him rather I showed a lot of attitude.

Which are the most memorable gifts Rishabh has given you?

Rishabh has gifted me a lot of things. Out of which I love the tiger stuff toy he gave to me and the Ipad the best.

Which has been your most memorable date and why?

My most memorable date was last year when Rishabh and I went out and saw Kites. A lot of people didn't like the movie but I really liked it. It was an amazing day. — HRM.

Living life Kat size

Shah Rukh Khan's television production Live My Life on UTV Stars sounds exciting as it involves stars sharing their lives for two days with an ardent fan. While SRK has roped in several top stars, at times the production team find themselves in a fix. It happened when they had to shoot with Katrina Kaif who refused to spend two days with a male fan. She requested a female fan tag her around. Being a popular star Katrina's request was granted and the episode was shot amidst fervour.
