‘Rehris’ along highway removed

Zirakpur, August 17
To ensure the smooth flow of traffic on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway here, the local administration, along with a police team and MC officials, conducted an anti-encroachment drive this evening against vendors who had parked their ‘rehris’ along the highway.

The traffic police challaned 11 vehicles for wrong parking and impounded four vehicles. The Zirakpur police registered four cases against vendors for obstructing traffic on the highway.

An MC official said they had announced through loudspeakers and informed vendors not to park ‘rehris’ along the highway. Dera Bassi SDM Rajesh Tripathi and Zirakpur MC executive officer Paramjit Singh Sarao supervised the drive.

Cross-examination begins in Nari Niketan rape case

The defence counsels today started the cross-examination of UT Police inspector Uday Pal in the infamous Nari Niketan rape case. The court has deferred the hearing for further cross-examination for Thursday.

The victim had already identified all accused, including Bhupinder Singh, Jamuna Parsad, Kamla, Vijender and Maya of Nari Niketan and Naresh, Bhagwandeep, Davinder and Chotu of Ashreya in the Chandigarh district court.

The victim was raped during her stay in Nari Niketan. Later, she was shifted to Sector 47-based Aasherya, a home for mentally challenged. She was found pregnant on May 16, 2009, by Aasherya authorities.

The UT Administration had moved the High Court for the termination of her pregnancy on medical grounds. The HC had ordered to terminate the pregnancy, but it was later stayed by the Supreme Court. After that victim gave birth to a baby in December 2009.

Three arrested in vehicle-theft case

Ten days after four assailants snatched a carriage auto from its driver, the crime branch of the police arrested three out of the four persons involved in the auto robbery case at Kaimbwala village.

The accused have been identified as Balbir Singh, Singhra Singh and Sanjeev Sanju. All are in their early twenties and hail from Mohali district.

On August 7, Anuj Kashyap, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, reported that two persons had hired his carriage auto and urged that they need a three-wheeler to transport their luggage from Sakitri to Sector 18. When they reached near Kaimbwala, the boy sitting with the driver asked him to take a turn. He turned his three-wheeler as per his direction.

Anuj was then forced to stop the three-wheeler. Two more boys joined and all of them bashed Anuj up and forcibly took away his purse containing Rs 3,000, a driving licence, other documents and a mobile phone. They also tied both his hands with a rope and fled with his carriage auto.

Inspector Amanjot Singh, in charge, crime branch, said the accused were arrested and it was revealed that they robbed the three-wheeler to carry sand from small canals of Kanay ka Barda near Karora village. They even got the auto modified and reduced it body to half. They used the auto for transporting sand to construction sites of Naya Goan and Khuda Lohara.

Interrogation of the accused is still on. The accused have a tainted past and have been arrested by the Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh police for various cases of vehicle thefts, burglaries and snatchings. Another accused, Ajay Thakur, alias Aju, is yet to be arrested.

School watchman commits suicide

A watchman employed with Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence on the school premises last night.

The victim, Pritam Singh, was found hanging from a ceiling fan by students who had come to collect keys to the sports storeroom in the morning.

The police said the deceased had a verbal confrontation with his wife, who is expecting, over some issue last night and she left for her parent’s house in Sector 24.

The body will be handed over to the family after post-mortem. The police has ruled out any foul play behind the incident and has initiated inquest proceedings.

Septuagenarian dies in mishap

Mohali, August 17
A 70-year-old man died after being hit by a car near the Phase-4 market here yesterday. The deceased was identified as Sukhey of Sector 53 in Chandigarh.

The accident took place around 7 pm when Lalu, along with his father Sukhey, was moving towards the Chandigarh side. The car of the accused hit Sukhey, who fell down on the road and sustained serious injuries.

A passerby immediately informed the police. They took the injured to the GMSH at Sector 16 in Chandigarh, where he died during treatment. The person driving the car could not be identified.

Shivalik school gifts hockey field with AstroTurf to students

In an effort to boost the sports culture in the region, Shivalik Public School, Phase VI, Mohali, has come up with an AstroTurf hockey field on the school premises here.

Shivalik Public School became one of the first schools of the region to have an AstroTurf hockey field.

The school that is known to uplift the sports culture is also planning to instal floodlights in the hockey arena, so that players get a feel of world-class facility being given to them, which will boost their performance in return.

“A lot of efforts were being put to purchase the turf for the welfare of players. At present, we have 30 players in all categories, including U-14, U-17, U-19 and U-21. The players will perform well if they would be given all facilities,” said school director DS Bedi.

As per the latest technology, water used to keep the field wet can be reused to avoid wastage of water.

“The step will suddenly boost the confidence of players and they are also undergoing training under two coaches, who are taking care of their fitness and helping them in overcoming their technical weaknesses,” said Bedi.

The school also takes care of the proper diet of the players, as they are provided with a daily dose of 200 liter milk and other protein elements.

Besides improving the infrastructure of the national game, the school is also coming up with an indoor judo and gymnastics stadium. During October, the Open National Games will be held on the premises, along with the CBSE North Zone Badminton Tournament in the badminton hall of the school. Earlier, two players of the school had made it to the Indian volleyball team.

SN Vohra hockey meet from Aug 20

The Rock Rovers Hockey Club affiliated to the Chandigarh Hockey Association (CHA) will organise the 10th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Sub-Junior (U-14) Hockey Tournament at the hockey stadium of the Sports Complex, Sector 42, from August 20 to 27 here.

A total of 13 teams, including Karnataka XI, Bombay Hockey XI, Delhi Hockey XI, SVM Public School, Jaipur; Maha Rana Partap Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana; BUSH Academy, Khadoor Sahib; MRS Hockey Academy, Amritsar; Mehta Gurukul Hockey Academy, Doraha; MBC Hockey Academy, Bassi Pathana; Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42; Shivalik Public School, Mohali; and Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, will participate in the tournament.

According to N Vohra, general secretary of the association, the teams will be divided in four pools in the league stage, while top teams of each pool will move to the semifinals.

The winners of the tournament will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and the runners-up will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 15,000. During the tournament, the elite panel would also adjudge best goalkeeper; best fullback, best halfback and best forward, which will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 1,000.

During the tournament, the team that would play a fair game will be awarded with the BL Gupta Memorial Trophy.

Players of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra (GMSSSM), and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 (GMSSS-8), has won laurels during the one-day Sqay Cup held at The British School, Sector 44, here.

Players of GMSSS, Mani Majra, won six gold medals, while GMSSS-8 players won five gold medals. In the open category, Deepak of Government High School, Sector 7, won the gold medal.

Athletics meet

The Chandigarh Athletics Association will organise the Chandigarh State Senior Athletics Championship in both men and women category from August 20 and 21 at the Athletics Complex, Sector 46, here.

The organisers during the championship will select teams of men and women to represent the city in the upcoming 51st National Open Athletics Championship to be held from September 10 to 13 at Kolkata.

According to officials, only bonafide athletes (residents/employees/students) of Chandigarh can participate in the championship. The interested participants can submit their entries with Iqbal Singh, UT athletics coach, at the Athletics Complex, Sector 46, before August 20.

Broaden umpiring structure, say experts

A total of 56 participants, including 23 PCA panel umpires and 33 fresh candidates from 18 districts, attended a three-day seminar on the panel of umpires at the PCA Stadium here today.

The seminar was carried out under the elite panel of umpires who had officiated international matches, which include Dr MS Mahal, HS Sekhon and Jasbir Singh.

The seminar was conducted by the PCA to broaden the umpiring structure in view of the matches to be played in the upcoming year.

During the seminar, about 19 candidates were declared successful after a written test and viva-voce and were later inducted into the PCA umpires’ panel.

These new inducted umpires will undergo training in the BCCI level-I umpires’ course to be conducted at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, from August 18 to 21.

According to MP Pandove, PCA secretary PCA, a test will be conducted later for the new recruited six umpires and only successful candidates will be shortlisted for the BCCI level-I panel of umpires.

Shooting meet from Aug 26

The Chandigarh Rifle Association will organise the 36th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship from August 26 to 28 at Patiali ki Rao Shooting Ranges, Sector 25, here.

The participants will compete in small-bore weapons (.177 air rifle, air pistol, .22 pistol and rifle and .32 centre fire pistol) events in the senior, junior and youth categories for both men and women.

The interested participants can send their entries at the venue of the competition before August 25.
