Two cases of suicide reported in 24 hours

Ambala, August 4
Two persons committed suicide in the past 24 hours in Ambala City and Ambala Cantt.

The police said two cases of suicide had been reported. It said in the first incident, Vinod Kumar (31), a resident of Shastri Colony in Ambala City, who was working as an electrician, ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence. His wife Geeta was on the rooftop. On hearing her cries, neighbours assembled and rushed the victim to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Geeta said her husband had been under depression for a past few days.

In another incident, Ravinder (22), a resident of Kodwa Khurd village near Ambala Cantt, committed suicide by consuming poison after he failed to make it to the Army.

He was taken to the Civil Hospital, but doctors could not save him. Ravinder’s father Daleep Singh said his son was keen on joining the Army. He was disturbed as he could not clear the recruitment tests held in Ludhiana and Tejli.

Saplings planted

BASSI: Mount Litera Zee School Kidzee celebrated Environment Day on Wednesday. Karan Butalia, circle head, Axis Bank, Chandigarh, graced the occasion. 

Students presented a group song. Various competitions like poster making and slogan writing were held. Prizes were given to winners. Students also planted saplings on the school premises. — OC

Two get life term for murdering watchman

A local court today awarded life imprisonment to two accused for murdering a watchman posted at Leisure Valley in Sector 10.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge VP Sirohi awarded life term to Karnail Singh and Sukhjinder Singh under Section 302 of the IPC. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 18,000 on both the convicts.

Gum Bahadur, a watchman posted at Leisure Valley, was found murdered in his room on March 16, 2009. One of the accused, Karnail Singh, was arrested from Dera Bassi on April 11, 2009, after he was traced using the victim’s mobile phone, which was put on surveillance.

According to the prosecution, Karnail Singh along with his friend Sukhjinder Singh befriended Bahadur in December 2008.

There was a function in Leisure Valley during December 20, 21 and 22, where they both were hired by a private security agency.

The accused lived in Leisure Valley and got acquainted with Bahadur. They came to know that he had about four months’ salary with him and they continued to visit him.

On March 11, 2009, Karnail Singh was in dire need of money and he decided to take it from Bahadur.

On March 15, 2009, the accused and his accomplice met at Sector 30 and had drinks before going to Bahadur’s place.

They strangled the victim with a cloth and later slit his throat.

They also took away cash, a mobile phone, a TV, a DVD player, a gas stove and an LPG cylinder from his house.

PIL on stray cattle menace, parking problems

A local court today issued directions to the UT Administration and the municipal corporation to file their replies on August 16 on two public interest litigations filed against the stray cattle menace and the paid parking problems.

In the first PIL, advocate Pankaj Chandgothia and his wife Sangeeta demanded that a special cell be created with representatives from all departments concerned, including the administration, the MC and the police, to look into the problem of cattle menace. They also demanded that a compensation policy should be formulated wherein the administration should be liable to compensate any person who suffers on account of the stray cattle menace. The police should register an FIR in every such case.

The second PIL, which was filed by Chandgothia on the behalf of two city residents, was about the mismanagement of paid parking lots in the city.

16-yr-old held for rape bid

In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old boy was today arrested for attempting to rape a five-year-old girl.

The incident took place in Bapu Dham Colony in Sector 26 when the victim’s mother found her daughter missing. She caught the accused red handed-while attempting to rape her.

The mother had sent the daughter to a grocery store opposite her house. The accused, who is a class X student of Tagore Niketan School in Mani Majra, forcefully took the girl to a room. He is a son of the grocery store owner.

After the daughter failed to return, her mother went to the grocery store and found the accused forcing himself on the victim. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Man arrested for fraud

The police arrested Sandeep Singla, a local resident, for illegally selling shares of Anubhav Singla, a resident of Sector 9. A challan was presented in court today.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate ordered that Sandeep be taken in custody and kept in judicial remand till August 18.

In his complaint lodged with the police the previous year, Anubhav alleged that Sandeep had asked him and members of his family to open a Demat account with IndusInd Bank, Sector 11, with which he was employed as manager.

Anubhav had added that their family started transacting their account through Sandeep, who was residing with him at his house at that time.

He had reported that in 2003, Sandeep took certain voucher slips of various shares owned by him and members of his family without informing them and misappropriated between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 27 lakh.

Man hit by car, dies

Zirakpur, August 4
A 65-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a car on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway near Royal Estate yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Mam Raj, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, Bishanpura. The incident took place when Mam Raj was crossing the road. He fell down on the road and sustained serious injuries.

A passer-by informed the police and he died on way to the GMCH-32. The body was handed over to the family after conducting the postmortem. A police official said a case had been registered against Jhirmal Singh, a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib, on the complaint of Naunihal Singh, a resident of Bishanpura.

Thieves’ night out

Chandigarh, August 4
Three house burglaries and four vehicle thefts were reported in the city last night. Yogesh Kumar of Sector 27 reported that thieves decamped with a gold necklace set, two earrings, three gold rings and some silver jewellery from his residence.

Ashok Kumar Gupta of Sector 33 reported that gold and diamond jewellery and a cell phone was stolen from his house. Gurpreet Singh of Sector 40 reported that the theft of two LPG cylinders.

rdeep Singh reported that his Safari car (PB-65-K-0093) was stolen from Sector 37. Ravinder Singh of Sector 29 reported that his motorcycle was stolen from the Sector 7 market. Harbans Dadwal of Raipur Khurd said his Maruti car was lifted from his house. Joginder Pal of Ram Darbar reported his Activa scooter was stolen from his house. Rama Shankar of Hallo Majra reported his Mahindra pick-up van was stolen from his house. — TNS

Teacher, student succumb to injuries

A private school teacher and a student of Class XI, victims of a road accident, succumbed to their injuries yesterday.

They met with an accident on August 1 when their scooter was hit by a speeding CTU bus near Kohinoor dhaba on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway here.

The deceased were identified as Mandeep Kaur, a student of GS Memorial School and a resident of Preet Colony, and Shikha Sharma, a resident of Savitri Enclave, Lohgarh village.

St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, registered wins against their respective rivals during the first day of Inter-School Football Tournament for Girls (U-17) being held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 here.

In the first match, St Stephen’s School defeated Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, 1-0, while Government Model Senior Secondary School-23 were given a walk over against Vivek High School, Sector 38.

In the third match, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, defeated St Soldier School, Sector 28, 2-1.

MDAV-22 defeat GMHS-38

Maharishi Dayanand Adarsh Vidyalaya, Sector 22 (MDAV-22), defeated Government Model High School, Sector 38 (GMHS-38), by 10 points during the ongoing inter-school kho-kho tournament for girls (U-17), being held at MDAV School.

Government Model High School, Sector 22, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 29, by one turn and two points in the qualifying round.

Earlier, SGGSS, Sector 35, defeated Government High School, Sector 24, by 11 points. Government High School, Sector 46, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 22, by one turn and nine points.

In the final of Girls (U-14), Ryan Public School defter St Kabir School, Sector 26, 4-0 to finish as the winners, while Delhi Public School, Sector 40, defeated St Kabir School to attain third place in the tournament.

Saupin’s trounce Mount Carmel

Saupin’s School, Mohali, defeated Mount Carmel School in a league 
match of the ongoing second St Joseph’s Cricket (U-13) Champions Trophy here.

Kunal of Saupin’s School helped the team defeat the rivals by a margin of 119 runs.

Kunal scored 51 runs and took 4 for 14 during the innings.

Earlier in the match, Saupin’s managed to set a target of 154 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Kunal scored his half century studded with five boundaries, while his counterpart Jashan contributed 22 runs to the team’s total. For Mount Carmel, Sarab Sachdeva and Anuj took two wickets each.

In reply, Mount Carmel School were bundled out at 35 runs. Pranshu contributed eight runs, while for Saupin’s, Kunal was the pick of the bowlers for his 4 for 14.

Results: Saupin’s School (Mohali): 154 runs in 20 overs for 7(Kunal 51, Jashan 22 and Gurmehar 22).

Mount Carmel Convent: 35 all out in 12 overs ( Pranshu 8, Gurmehar 3 for 10 and Kunal 4 for 14).

Government High School, Sector 32, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56, to lift the title of UT Inter-School Throwball Tournament for Boys(U-14) being held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, here.

In the final match, GHS-32 defeated GMSSS-56 2-0, while DAV School, Sector 15, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 12, 2-1 to finish third.

In the U-14 category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 47, defeated Carmel Convent School 2-0.
