WHAT is the criterion of judging an athlete today? He/she could be decorated with Khel Ratna if he or she wins a gold medal without being caught in a dope test. The best coach is the one who supplies his athletes with performance-enhancing supplements that cannot be detected in tests. When an athlete is caught during the international games our heads hang in shame. Sports Minister Ajay Maken suspended foreign coach Yuri Ogorodnik after a number of athletes were caught in the dope scandal. The Sports Authorities of India, the National Anti-Doping Agency and many other sports bodies and officials sprung into action soon after, as if all of them had taken steroids. The blame game has also started. But the need of the hour is to set up a state-of-the-art research centre where such drugs and dopes be invented, which, when given to players should win them gold medals right away without their ever being caught. The National Institute of Sports should be re-christened as the national institute of steroids. Here more stress should be given on training sportsmen on honing drug-taking techniques rather than honing their athletic finesse. A sprinter didn’t move after the get-set-go stuff. When asked what happened, he said, “I am just trying to remember if I have taken my dose of performance-enhancing dope.”
