Fair game

Young gun:Jaipreet Ghuman

Golf is a game for girls and women and yes, men too. Or, so the women would have us believe. Men, because statistically speaking, it's a male dominated field out there, starting right from the caddy to the golf professional. From the proverbial "golf widows" to women golfers, some from the city are gradually and literally painting a greener canvas.

There are some who picked it up because they felt left out, others because the game picked them up, while the rest because they wanted to. Shares Saaniya Sharma, 25, a professional golfer, "I have been playing golf for eight years now. My father introduced me to it and I turned a professional in 2007." Currently, the girl ranks third on the Money List, is looking forward to the new season that starts in August and recently qualified to become a certified class D coach."

Did that come as a breather where a caddy and a coach are terms associated with men, something for which the city still has a long way to go? She adds, "In South East Asia it's common to come across women caddies and definitely there's no dearth of women golfers outside India. Here we are gradually picking it up." And the numbers are improving. "Definitely the statistics have gone up. I would say it has tripled but not many have made a mark because the game has been picked up as a fad. Women generally play social golf, not competitive golf," Paulin JM Singh, accredited club maker and into the game for over a decade now, puts it bold and blunt. "My husband introduced me to golf. I have been playing since 1997 and currently I'm the women's champion in the city. My daughter Jaipreet Ghuman is also into the game." While a lot many play, not many of them practice. She adds, "Golf does require physical strength and stamina and is a totally an outdoor game, I have played even during the scorching summer."

They might play just during 'fair weather" but sooner than later, they take over. Opines Ajay Gujral, golf teaching professional, "They are much faster at picking up the basics. The game is more like a craft, it involves proper technique and is not like weight lifting. So ladies naturally take to it faster." No painting the stereotypical picture here but the natural inclination for the game doesn't end there. Says Moon Sandhu, teacher, golf beginner, "Women are more patient, so, eventually they come out as the winner. At the age of 67, my mother-in-law won the Chandigarh Ladies Golf Championship in 2007." Do we have competition here? Opines Saaniya, the longest hitter in the female category herself, "For long hits you need strength, but ladies cover up in the short game."

Something that a started as a trend is well on its way to becoming a tradition. Dr Puneet Kapoor, yet another beginner, sets a reverse example, "I joined it during the vacation and now hooked onto it. In fact, I pushed my husband and made him join the club." Laughs Manraj Kaur, yet another golf regular, "My husband was on his way to becoming a 'golf widower' till he realised how much fun and me and my friends were having on the lawns and so he decided to join the club too. However, I feel men get very competitive playing golf, while we are much more composed and patient. That's why we enjoy it more and end up playing better, with less effort." Is anybody feeling threatened?

On A song: Perter Pardesi

The bright faces that make a Chandigarh di kudi or munda are of those youngsters who come down to The City Beautiful from the heart of Punjab to study."With due respect to all the hit songs and singers who've made songs on Chandigarh, I feel that the city was being projected in a very negative light," says Peter Pardesi.

He has attempted to break the jinx with his new track Main Chandigarh Bol Reha Haan. He adds, "I came to Chandigarh from Jallandhar four years ago and I feel it's a beautiful place, with clean roads and green environs. It also provides the right academic infrastructure."

"I have done a lot of songs before and uploaded them on the Internet but this is my first song as a professional singer. And I wrote it in 20 minutes flat." The video of the track is being shot.

He says, "Do you know almost every person from north who living abroad aspires to have property in this city. Such is its importance?"

The song struck the right chord with the listeners. "I have tried to show a true picture of Punjab and the significance of the city. So far there have been 2,500 hits and downloads.

As for the video, "It'll highlight Panjab University, the High Court and all important landmarks."

Youngsters bunk, have fun and not study in almost every city of Punjab, for that matter in India, he feels. "Did any other city carve a distinct identity out of it?" Like they say, no publicity is bad publicity. Well there will always be two schools of thought on the subject, he feels. "The track ends with the lyrics that every coin has two sides," Peter says. As of now he's just tried to flip the coin!

On a foot tapping note…
The International Children's Festival of performing Art will showcase dance forms of 15 countries
Ashima Sehajpal

The books that are hated form a chain and go back to Bookland. Scared of their parents, children follow them to the fantasy world to bring them back on their shelves. They hear the books sharing their stories, grievances and experiences with each other.

The moral they learn is that to love books they first need to take care of them. This 45-year-old story, Kitabe Karti Hain Batein, takes a tangible shape on stage. Courtesy, the Interntaional Children's Festival of Performing Arts.

Made on the lines of Broadway shows, this musical drama has 120 students of Ryan International School participating in it. "The idea is to involve as many students, hence the large number of students," reasons Utkarsh Marwah, director of the play and the festival. The drama is just one of the activities of the festival.

As many as 3,000 students will be taking part in various activities such as contemporary dances and folk dances from Sri Lanka, Sweden, Finland, Turkey etc. Artistes from 15 countries have been invited for this cultural bonanza. "Such programmes teach children respect other cultures.

It gives them practical exposure. The festival aims to establish that music has a universal language," which is well proved when artistes share their experience with the students. Upekha Daniel from Sri Lanka teaches Kandyan dance, the traditional dance form of the country. "Students know a lot about Latin and street dance forms of the West. Knowing about a Sri Lankan dance form was a new experience for them," says Upekha. She adds that the dance form shares certain similarities with Bharatnatyam, "Only we have more lifts and faster movements."

Sonja Kaufeler from Switzerland says that it's fashionable to know the traditional Swiss dance back home. "I realised that youngsters here are more eager to learn the Western dance forms. To ensure the popularity Indian classical dance, it's important to make it a part of school curriculum"

The artistes, however, have a complaint in common, which they think is hilarious. Zoe Kindler from United Kingdom takes the lead to explain, "Since contemporary dances require chemistry between the boy and girl, it requires them to be comfortable. Children as young as 10 are so conscious of dancing with someone form the opposite sex. The teachers here really need to work on this."

Zoe is teaching gymnastic movements and the basic steps of contemporary dance. Mara Loch from Austria is also teaching the same dance form but on the background score of a raga. Heidi Mikki from Finland says, "Students not only learn a new dance form, but also get to learn about different cultures. So, why not have more of such programmes." Ask students the same question and they reply, "Why not!" as well.

The festival is on July 22-24 at Tagore Theatre

Out of control

Rajniesh Duggal almost got burnt shooting for the promotional video song Yaadein for Vikram Bhatt's production Phhir. The model-turned-actor had to stand on a table with a blaze in the background when the flames got out of control. The theme of the video is the black and white sides of life. Luckily the blaze was doused in time and Rajniesh did not have to see his face blackened too!

Over the weekend

Priyanka Chopra shot at FilmCity for Ra.One over the weekend. She is doing a few scenes and a song with Shah Rukh Khan. They brought in her birthday.

I'm appealing: Sonakshi

Sonakshi Sinha's next release is Joker with Akshay Kumar.

Sonakshi Sinha is all set to endorse her own brand, not literally but through her movies, endorsements, and public image. She has tremendous belief in herself.

My brand

I want people to think that I am the perfect sister, wife, daughter-in-law, and the like. I want people to want wives and daughters-in-law like me. I am traditional and I want to project that image or Brand Sonakshi through everything I do. I am an icon and I want to be responsible.

Of curves and confidence

Even when I was fat, I knew that I was appealing but I didn't know to such a huge extent. Losing weight has given me immense confidence and in any case, I never wanted to be stick thin. I am happy being the way I am and I want to project an image of a healthy Indian woman. We are blessed with curves and real women have curves.

Still and steady

I know that with Dabangg, my life has changed overnight but I am still the same Sona. My parents and friends have ensured that. I still have the same friends. There is pressure and I can get carried away but my conservative upbringing keeps me grounded. Also, I have never been a party girl.

On the cards

I feel lucky to have done Dabanng. I have Dabangg 2 with Salman Khan, Joker with Akshay Kumar, Kick with Salman Khan, Rowdy Rathore with Akshay Kumar, and Race 2 with Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham. The last film is a multi-starrer. All these films are huge commercial ones and it feels great to be paired with people I have grown up watching.

Me against myself

Shah Rukh Khan has agreed to star in the remake of Angoor directed by Rohit Shetty. He is also doing Yash Chopra's romantic film with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. So he will battle against himself at the box office! Either way, he wins. How cool is that?

Three to tango

Two good: Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan

Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Sanjay Dutt are action heroes with a huge fan base. The three of them will co-produce and star in an action film.

A source says, 'The three of them are very good friends and have mutual respect for each other. Ajay Devgn had said on a chat show that Salman Khan has a huge number of fans and that he (himself) and Sanjay Dutt are not affected by flop films because they have an unshakeable fan base. Salman respects Sanjay Dutt and thinks he is a true hero.

Salman has also been raving about Ajay Devgn's physique and upcoming film on Twitter. Ajay has been recommending Salman's production Chillar Party to his friends and family. Salman will arrange a special screening of Bodyguard for Sanjay and Ajay.' He continues, 'All of them are very busy currently with action films but they take time out to meet each other. Ajay Devgn visited the sets of Bodyguard and both Ajay and Sanjay made special appearances in Salman's Ready. Ajay gave Sanjay bulk dates for Rascals and Sanjay had also re-adjusted his schedule for All The Best. They meet often in Bandra because Sanjay and Salman stay there and Ajay stays in Juhu.

The idea to offer the audiences a complete package as an action film starring all three of them dawned upon them during one of their casual meetings. They are developing it. The film is only in the planning stages.' The three of them refused to comment on their plans. — HRM

Company's sake: Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor held a special screening of Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara at Ramoji Rao City Studios in Hyderabad.

She is there to accompany Saif who is shooting over there.

Vivek turns baddie

Vivek Oberoi's career will go places as he is playing the baddie opposite Hrithik Roshan in the sequel to Krrishh.

The role was turned down by Ajay Devgn and SRK.

He has a distinct look in the anticipated film.

Setting on fire

Raghav Sachar, who gave his voice in hits like Kabul Express and Sunday, is back with his new album Set The Fire and few Bollywood projects in the pipeline.

"I am very excited about my new album. The idea just came up when I was giving a live performance. I wanted to capture the energy of it," Sachar said. Sachar has also been offered his first ever full fledged project as a music composer in Vikram Bhatt's next Phhir. The movie stars TV actor Roshni Chopra and 1920 actor Rajneesh Duggal in the lead. Bhatt's last release was a 3D horror movie Haunted. Sachar, 30, feels that today's songs don't have any classic value attached to them.

"There have been times when I am working and there is a difference in opinion with the music director but I have to work according to him. Creativity gets compromised then ," he says. — PTI

Craig is getting personal

James Bond actor Daniel Craig is in no mood to divulge details of his surprise wedding to Rachel Weisz, saying he wants to keep his personal life "private".

The 43-year-old actor, who tied the knot with Weisz, 41, last month in a surprise low-key ceremony, insists it is "incredibly important" for him to maintain silence on the wedding episode to keep his private life out of the spotlight, reported a publication.

"I did it secretly - I can't tell you how I pulled it off. My private life is incredibly important to me, and certainly that aspect of it is more than incredibly important to me," he said. However, Craig's friend Jason Isaacs has said that the actor is "very happy" following the nuptials.

Craig and Rachel will be seen together in the upcoming horror film Dream House together, which was filmed throughout 2010 and is due to be released in September. The couple, who began dating in December, shocked everyone by tying the knot in front of just four people. — PTI

Empty nest syndrome!

Heartbroken: Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole is too heartbroken to use her new love nest in Los Angeles after spending three million pounds. Deluded Cheryl thought the Hollywood apartment would be the perfect way to tempt her former footballer husband Ashley to move to LA and re-ignite their romance.

But now she is devastated by claims that he was playing away with sexy Virgin Atlantic air hostess Kerry Meades, 29, while he was trying to woo her back. One pal said Cheryl felt "trem-endously let down" by Ashley's antics, claiming: "He'll never change - he just cannot keep it in his trousers." "She knows how much Ashley loves Los Angeles and thought it would be brilliant to have a place where he could come and stay with her," a publication quoted a close friend as saying.

"She thought he might be tempted to join David Beckham at LA Galaxy. But once again she has been let down by him, just as friends and family warned her. Cheryl is feeling a bit foolish as she thought Ashley had changed," the friend added. — ANI

Green Thumb
Leafy gully
satish narula

bloom time: A line of green foliage enlivens any driveway or backyard.

Its monsoon, the best time for a gardener to think and plant. While planning and planting, normally all the aspects are considered by gardeners but two places in the garden get a casual approach. These are the drive and the side lane of the house. Let us give these a look.

The area from the main gate to the garage normally gets a raw deal as the main garden is considered the lawn at the left or right of the drive. Similar is the case with the side lane as the front and the back of the house get all the attention and the side gully gets neglected. Due to this kind of neglect the garden seems to have been divided with no continuity whereas the link between all the plantations should be maintained to give this garden a one unit concept. Now when the space is a constraint the planting has to be done by creating the continuity from ground to the sky!

Two kinds of treatments are given to the drive way, one to two feet wide side beds are made along the boundary wall and building or the space is concretised. In the former the plantation is done for beatification and also with the purpose to provide a screen from the neighbour's garden.

The basic consideration for such planting should be that only those species should be planted which do not spread on the sides and interfere with the movement of vehicles and while boarding or alighting. For this lilies suit the location very well.

In case one wants to go in for seasonal plants then depending upon the light and sun conditions, suitable dwarfing annuals should be planted. In case one wants privacy from wall. For higher 'green wall' the same climber could be trained on a wire or two raised on the wall. For such location, one could go in for golden shower or Quisqualis indica (jhumka bel) that spreads fragrance too. Another alternative is growing of Areca palm in the bed that keeps giving tillers to make the 'wall' green till a good height. In case of side gullies, more of the space is available for accommodating more of plants as there is no consideration required for movement of vehicles.

In case the driveway is concretised one could keep fancy stands and pots of either seasonal or the evergreen shade loving plants. In any case the size of the pot should suit the plant and also all the pots should be uniform. Do not forget to place base plates they will carry the excess water flow from the pot to be used after some time and also save the floor from stains.

Breathe that stress out

Bhramari Pranayama

Pranayama (breathing exercise) are world's oldest healing techniques which helps us to prevent irreversible damage to our health and well being by learning how to reduce stress without having to spend years visiting the doctor, taking harmful prescription drugs. For stress, Bhramari Pranayama is considered as the best breathing exercise. It has immediate relaxing effect on the brain. Bhramari pranayama is very useful for person in depression, anxiety, insomnia. It acts as a miracle in throat problem. The word Bhramari is derived from Sanskrit word Bhramar, which means humming bee, this is because while performing this pranayama one sounds like a humming bee.

Brahmari Pranayama forms vibrations in the brain. By these vibrations the cerebral cortex sends impulses directly to the hypothalamus, which controls the 'pituitary' gland, the master of all glands that's why mental tension, agitation, hypertension, migraine, paralysis, high blood pressure and heart diseases are positively affected. It also gives the practitioner the taste of meditation, as the effect is quite similar to that. It improves the glamour of the face. Its benefits do not end here- it improves one's concentration levels and memory also. In my personal experience the most beneficial aspect is the calmness we are able to experience. This is one of the ways we can achieve conscious relaxation.

To start with, sit in a suitable relaxed posture where in your spine is straight, like Padmasana or Vajrasana etc. Cover both the ears by pressing the thumbs of both your hands. Place your index fingers on the forehead and let the remaining 3 fingers close your eyes. Inhale through both the nostrils, taking a real slow deep breath. Keep your mouth closed and begin slowly exhaling, making humming sound of a bee like "hmmmm" while reciting AUM mentally. This completes on cycle of Bhramari pranayama now inhale again and repeat the process. One should start by practicing it 10-12 times which can be gradually increased to 25-30 times. Do take break whenever you feel like taking it. After you finish the desired number of rounds sit quietly while hands are placed on your knees. You will experience that the vibrations lasts for minutes after the pranayama is completed and you can feel the bliss. If children practice this pranayama regularly it helps them in studies by increasing their memory and concentration power.

Ginger power reduces side-effects of chemotherapy

Doctors at AIIMS are now working upon the herbal way to help cancer patients cope with the side-effects of chemotherapy. Oncologists at the hospital here have been experimenting with ginger root powder in order to reduce the severity of the chemotherapy induced nausea vomiting (CINV).

Nausea and vomiting are the major side effects that a cancer patient encounters after chemotherapy treatment.

"The severity of chemotherapy induced nausea vomiting was reduced by ginger, our experiments showed. After the success of the study, we can say that there is need to have ginger root powder available as capsules in varied dosages in order to use it as an add-on therapy in patients receiving chemotherapy with high vomiting potential," said Dr Sameer Bakhshi, additional professor, department of medical oncology, AIIMS.

A total of 60 patients, between the ages of eight and 21 years were randomly selected for the study.

"It was a double-blind randomised single institutional study carried out at our centre in 2009. Neither the patient nor the interviewer with the patients knew about the patient being administered with the dosage of ginger root powder," Bakhshi, who led the study, said.

He said dosages were administered according to the weight of the person. While those who weighed between 20 to 40 kg were given 167 mg of ginger root powder capsules, those in the weight category of 40 to 60kg were given 400 mg.

Don’t mix talking ‘n’ driving

Mobile phones, music, cosmetics, snacks and drinks are some of the things that distract drivers, putting at risk the lives of eight out of 10 motorists, a new survey says.

An alarming 82 per cent of drivers confess to having been badly distracted at some stage, the survey found.

Music is the single biggest cause and 61 per cent admitted that they get distracted while changing CDs, music on their iPods or radio stations.

Half said snacks and drinks are to blame and 23 per cent admitted to making or taking calls on a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

Among the under-35 age group, 36 per cent admitted sending texts while driving and two per cent said they looked at Facebook even while driving.

Five per cent of those surveyed admitted to applying perfume or make-up while driving and 15 percent said they did not wear a seatbelt.

Last year, 16,485 British motorists were convicted for driving without due care and attention. — IANS
