All in a NAME
It’s not only the music that makes a band click. The names of individual members are equally, if not more, important

Narcissus (in black) with crew member
In tune: Narcissus (in black) with crew member

When Shanti Swaroop became narcissuscallicantzaros, not that it became a cause for concern but it became a reason to pause, reflect and ponder. Actually real names never suited a rapper’s personality and profession."

There are brand new reasons. "It can’t be an easy name for a lot of reasons. People find it easier to register anything new and out-of-the-box. Secondly, many of us promote our music through the Internet. We want that whenever they type our names on Google, only our names and music should open. So that there’s no duplication and confusion," shrugs Narci, aka Shanti Swaroop, Bsc student, and part of the rap crew United Cloudz. He adds, "Any new person finds it a little odd but this name’s actually inspired from a character in the Greek mythology. He had a curse that beauty would be the cause of his death."

Did he say curse? That brings us to a certain Dr Curse, a B.Tech student from the city, from the crew Rap Rehab, which means, "all the rap addicts are welcome to the rap club." The invitation is understandable, for a name of the band and so are the songs. Shares Dipesh Kumar, city student and crew member Rap Rehab, "One of our songs name is Mishty Sizzle, which is about the girl I loved the most. The second one is titled ‘Back from the Hibernation’. The song titles are theme-based and depend on the lyrics." As far as the individual names, he’s rechristened 7D. Seven dimensional, perhaps! "It stands for the seventh defaulter because way back in school we had a band named Defaulters and I was the seventh one to join. Also, the first alphabet of my name is D."

Then there’s the age old theory of "grabbing attention" and "being remembered." On a recent trip to Chandigarh, a pair of DJ’s (never mind the real names) would rather be called with their stage names ‘Rich and B**** as, "It’s fun to see people react to our on stage names." Opines Sachin Gahlan, student musician, "I kept the name Dr Curse because whoever tries to trouble me, I always act like a curse for him or her; each attack of theirs is reversed. As for my friends, they call me DC."

More than the names, it’s the reasons getting weirder by the day. Any update on what the musicians are up to? We guess there must be a somewhat similar story behind Mayank becoming Diabolos. Take another. Shrugs Amit Rana, or D Hades, from ‘Bringing Rap Souls Back’, "We have not yet officially recorded our songs, haven’t performed around much and are relatively unseen. D Hades literally means unseen." Shares Anurag Rungta, Class XII student, "When we keep our band names, we have to go by what the group decides. It’s only with our individual stage names that there’s complete freedom and liberty." As far as his name is concerned, it’s pretty unprintable! He laughs, "For instance, if someone were to announce on stage Anurag, that wouldn’t carry the required punch. If someone were to announce Andy that’s better and twist that to something freaky, people remember!"

It’s a beautiful day
Re-treat in the jungle!
Jasmine Singh

How nice it would be to find yourself surrounded by a dark forest, with a warm light breaking through the thickness! How nice it would be to be one with the sounds of birds, of wind criss-crossing through the tall trees…if you feel enticed, and yet refrained because planning a visit to such a place will require filing leave application in the office, then here is a simple solution called Siswan Jungle Lodge, Chandigarh-Siswan Dam road, village Nawanagar. A bang 23kms from the landmark PGI (Post Graduate Institute of India), and 21 kms from Mullanpur border, Siswan Jungle Lodge is a place tucked away in nature.

An endeavour of Sanjay Sethi, who started the project of converting a one-room accommodation on his property into a lodge, the only thing that still pulls him to this place is the serenity and a ‘being-with-yourself’ experience that it offers. “From Siswan Dam to the lodge is forest cover, so the entire drive to this place is picturesque. In 2006, when I started this project, there used to be only a forest trail, where I used to drive my Scorpio. Now, you can drive up to Siswan Jungle Lodge,” he says.

A walk through nature takes you to the lodge, created for people to relax and enjoy the ambience. The Siswan Lodge is tastefully done with eight rooms packed in luxury and comfort. If by luxury you mean television sets, well the place doesn’t have that! After repeated requests there is now a plan to install TV sets, but you wouldn’t want to switch one even if you were provided one in the rooms!

From the ‘well-done-up’ rooms to walking through the meandering trails…it is here you would love to run through the jungle, with wind in your hair and sand at your feet! If you haven’t seen village life, it is through the trails that you would come across a chirpy village. Puff your lungs with pure oxygen. If the walk gets tiring, hop on the mountain bikes and see the place. Better still, chose a lazy corner for yourself; grab a book from the library at the lodge and flip through the pages. If while reading you are interrupted by the beautiful sound of chirping birds you haven’t seen before, don’t be startled. Siswan Jungle Lodge is a place where almost 45 species of birds have been sighted. It is at this place that you can see a superb view of the dense forest that surrounds the dam.

Once you have soaked the nature, it is time to satisfy your appetite. The Jungle café with its open view offers exquisite Indian, Continental and Chinese food. With a cup of hot coffee in one hand and an eye on the nature around... Siswan Jungle Lodge is surely a blissful experience!

Sorted out!

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan today said that issues between his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and producer of the film Heroine have been sorted out.

Earlier this week, director Madhur Bhandarkar had said on his blog that he was in a shock after his ambitious project, Heroine, had to be canned following the news of Aishwarya’s pregnancy.

Bhandarkar had said he was depressed for weeks as Heroine was his most ambitious project to the date. “This is a matter between the producer and Aishwarya, and I cannot comment on it,” Bachchan, who was here for the promotion of his new film Buddha Hoga Tera Baap, said, when asked for a comment.

“When I was asked (previously) what I have to say, I had said that they (Aishwarya and Bhandarkar) would sort it out, and in fact they have sorted it out,” he said.

“(Despite this) if some person expresses his feelings about it he has the right to do it. And then others will also express their feelings on the issue and this way whatever is the truth, will come out,” Bachchan said. — PTI

Emma casts a spell

Actress Emma Watson says that little children sometimes get scared of her as they think that she has the powers of her Harry Potter alter-ego and is going to cast a spell on them.

"Sometimes you can't convince them, because they believe in it. They really believe in it. They really think that I'm Hermione in real life, which I love. It's funny," she added.

chill out
The abiding charm of Srinagar...

"You should not go there; don't you know that people are being killed there every day?" - was the first response of friends when I told them that we would be going to Srinagar for a conference. My father, who is an Army veteran, ridiculed our fears and exhorted us to go in his typical military style - "It is not just the responsibility of the Army to guard the country - all you civilians must do your bit too!"

So along with my wife, I set off. The Srinagar airport was a small charming one with lots of Army people around. A short cab ride with a talkative driver and we were at our hotel on the picturesque Dal Lake. The scenery was breathtaking and the weather a pleasant change from the stifling heat of Ludhiana. After a refreshing 'qahwa' tea we were all set. The last time I had been there was in 1986 and nothing seemed to have changed.

A shikara ride was a fantastic introduction to the city. Charmingly persuasive shopkeepers in shikaras managed to sell quite a few knick-knacks to the ladies who were very impressed with the wares, which ranged from jewellery to saffron to clothes. Bargaining is the order of the day, we realised very soon, and enjoyed by both the buyer and the seller!

Houseboats with outlandish names like Neil Armstrong, Lucifer, Prince of Wales, Queen Elizabeth, Noorjahan dotted the lake. We went inside some and were amazed by the luxurious and reasonably priced accommodation on offer. The Mughal gardens and Chasma Shahi spring - of the times of Shah Jahan and Jehangir - are very well-maintained and have a lot of tourists, quite a few from South India - one wonders why they don't feel cold and look very comfortable in t-shirts even in the snow! A visit to the picturesque Shankaracharya Temple and Awantipur (excavation of early Hindu temple) was stunning.

This was followed by the mandatory visit to Gulmarg, which took our breath away. The gondola ride to the top was scary. This is the highest (13,400 ft) cable car in the world! The snow even in summer was heavy and the weather chilly to the bone. Pahalgam, with its lovely gurgling streams, Lidder River, meadows and the adventurous horse ride to Baisaran charmed us. Mixing with the common man was not difficult. Although some cynicism crept into their conversation, I could feel that they were positive that the present impasse would be resolved. Contrary to popular belief, the local ladies were well-educated, bright and articulate.

They were not averse to giving their strong and very sensible views on any topic under the sun. The only difference I could make out from their so-called modern big city sisters was they were very modestly dressed - but still looked very pretty! There was no obvious divide among the locals. A number of Sikhs belong to and live in Srinagar. The Sri Krishna Vaishno Dhaba on Mandir Road is frequented by both Hindus and Muslims. We were in for a pleasant surprise in Pahalgam when in a Shiv Mandir (Mamlashewar) - we found a devout Muslim conducting all the rituals. It was a real eye-opener.

The police, the Army and the CRPF are in large numbers - but nowhere do they harass the general public. We came away with a sense of awe and a feeling that the artificial divide between Kashmir and the rest of India must end.

Coffee and more at Bakes and Beans
Happy hours: Coffee and more at Bakes and Beans

Having introduced the art of fine coffee drinking to Ludhiana 11 years ago, the good-old "Bakes and Beans" is the twin answer to hard rock café and the Indian Coffee House.

The vintage décor has memorabilia of the Eric Clapton era and here, people can be seen sipping coffee while indulging in good-humoured wit, which reminds one of the discussions of litterateurs and politicians of Delhi's Indian Coffee House.

Maintaining a typical 'Italian café' type ambience in the heart of Ludhiana, Bakes and Beans is frequented by people of all age groups. "I have fulfilled my own passion by introducing the nuances of coffee drinking here," says Gurlal Grewal, the owner. The menu at B&B quotes a Turkish proverb- 'Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love'. And their own add-on is - "Coffee can be mellow and milky for breakfast, long and cool on a hot summer afternoon and an intense contrast to the after-dinner chocolates."

Opine restaurant-owner Javed Grewal and businessman Pranay Sharma, relaxing over Bell Pepper non-vegetarian sandwiches with Americano Plunger Coffee, "It sure is a congenial place to unwind and discuss issues, both trivial and pertinent."

Salads too give that healthy and appetizing look and again taking words from the menu card - 'A well-made salad is almost lyrical in it's combination of fresh taste, textures and colours, expressing a particular mood or theme" And that's what dietician Monica Duggal says, "I especially bring my teenaged children here to teach them to relish nutritive and healthy salads." They were seen trying out the Greek pasta salad while we attacked the lemon chicken salad with its crunchy lettuce and springy chicken. With an addition of whopping variety of pizzas, pastas, soups etc, the meal promises to be different yet snacky and wholesome.

B&B is also serving 20 types of teas with different flavors and the owner hopes to make it to 80 varieties for the authentic 'Chai Lounge'. A dating couple could be spotted mulling over cold coffee frappe for more than two hours! "This is quite common here," says the manager Ajay. The joint also boasts of a fast-moving bakery with select items. "We especially come here from Phagwara to get our stock of the multi-grain brown breads and of course the brownies," says Shruti Mehra. The manager informs that the fresh bakery products are available only after 9.30 am, as the evening lot is all disposed off and much goes in for the happy hours after 10 pm!

Being casual

Every person has a sense of style in his own right. Yet there are only few who'd attract the second glance. It could be their tousled hair or torn jeans! Which is why we bring you the "faces in the crowd" of the campuses across the city.

Today's face in the crowd is Sahej Abrol, a first year B.Com (Honours) student at GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Your sense of style is…

Casual and elegant! I'm biased towards my favourite pair of jeans

Latest addition in the wardrobe…

Colour! I realised that I could do with some more. So I bought some bright coloured t-shirts.

Brand freak or street smart?

Street smart! It's very important for me to like what I'm buying. Once that's taken care of, I'm confident I would be able to carry anything off.

Choose one look: Sporty, glamorous or chic

Sporty

Favourite style icon?

Roger Federer

Who's the worst dressed celebrity around?

Lady Gaga, undoubtedly

One fashion trend you don't understand…

Among women its multi-coloured nail art and in men I fail to fathom shirt with shorts and slippers.

Your take on accessories

It's very important to choose accessories that complement your dress. If you can't find the perfect match, it's not worth it

Fashion to me is whatever I am comfortable with and it should suit me too. I think Kareena Kapoor is the most fashionable person in Bollywood because she looks beautiful in whatever she wears.

Los Angeles: It's one of the best places in the world to shop and many Hollywood and Bollywood celebs go there to shop. Some of the most visited shopping destinations in LA are the Grand Central Market, Universal City Walk and Chinatown.

London: I love London because of the designer labels you get all the designers based over there. It's a beautiful place to roam around too. I make sure I visit London at least once in two years.

New York: I feel New York is a Shopping Paradise. The streets of NYC come alive in the evening buzzing with activity. All 12 months feel like Diwali.

Dubai: Dubai is one of the favourite places for shopping. The Dubai Mall is home to about every major brand in the world. One has to visit Dubai during the Dubai Shopping Festival because it's huge and has every brand.

India: I shop in India very often because I live here! I love the designers and also stuff off the streets. I am a shopaholic so when I am stressed I go shopping.

Preity goes to Paris

Preity Zinta
PRETTY FRENCH: Preity Zinta

Director Prem Soni says that by the time the shooting of Ishq In Paris starts, lead actress Preity Zinta would have got her French absolutely right. He also says that in spite of the costs involved, there was no other city he would have shot the film in.

Ishq In Paris, an Indo-French project, is Preity's first production venture and she plays an half-Indian half-French girl who falls in love in one of the most expensive cities in the world to shoot in.

"From the start, we were very sure that Preity would get her French absolutely right with the correct accent and pronunciation. We did not want to dub her French dialogues. By the time we start shooting, I am dead sure Preity will know as much French as any native and speak the language fluently enough to pass off as a Frenchwoman," said Soni.

He thinks there's something distinctly French about Preity's looks and added: "So many people have commented on how French she looks. I couldn't have cast anyone else in the role."

So expensive is Paris to shoot in that Sanjay Gadhvi had to shelve his Katrina Kaif-Imran Khan romance 7 Days In Paris" due to the costs involved.

"I'm aware of this. But for Ishq In Paris, it was always Paris or nothing. I couldn't locate this love story anywhere else. I started writing the script two years ago. From the start I was sure it had to be Paris or nothing," says the director who spent his formative years in Spain.

Though the director doesn't want to reveal this, there will apparently be two different versions of the film - one for the Indian and the other for the international market. — IANS

Weight ISSUES

Minissha Lamba has been asked to gain weight on her derriere for her role in Zilla Ghaziabad. The director of the film is Anand Kumar. She says that she plays a village girl in the film about politics, crime, and mafia in UP.

She needs to look very sexy and rounded and is working on gaining weight for her role. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi and Arshad Warsi. — IANS

No time to date

Singer Peter Andre says he is not looking to get into any relationship anytime soon because he does not have time to date.

After separating from model Katie Price, the singer last dated model Elen Rivas, but their relationship broke down in April due to their hectic careers. "Why should someone put up with only seeing me on my terms? Any girl I see now, I can't see it developing into a relationship. How can it?" he said.

"I don't know where I'm at personally at the moment. (I'd like a girlfriend) but it's not practical. I think I'd be asking too much from someone," he added.

Andre also revealed he wants to have meaningful relationships with people rather than one-night stands.

"I'm happy with work but my personal life is all over the place. I just can't get it right. There's a barrier up. You meet people and then you get intimate before you get to know them but then my barriers go up," he said.

"I'm a very private person. But I'm in the sort of state of mind where I'm happy with just having fun."— IANS

Trouble for KBC 5

The forthcoming season of Kaun Banega Crorepati featuring host megastar Amitabh Bachchan began their publicity with some fun promos on TV. While most were cool with a nerdy guy winning and his office bullies ruing, an old man winning and his family repenting their bad behaviour towards them. But one promo which talks about freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose's slogan Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi doonga used in a funny manner has irked many people. Petitioner Mumbai businessman Mukesh Sharma has filed a PIL claiming the KBC promo is insulting to the historic slogan. In response, the Bombay High Court issued notices to Amitabh Bachchan, Sony TV and the censor board asking for their response on the same.

Though channel Imagine might rely on reality shows to bring in good TRPs they haven't had a good run since a while. Swayamvar season 3 too didn't get a great start but it picked up in the last week. Ratan Ka Rishta garnered a GRP of 107 and as per the TAM report, Ratan's Mehendi and Sangeet had garnered 2.3 and 2.8 TVR. Good going.

Marine Maldives

I enjoyed unwinding and swimming with the coastal fishes and also diving and seeing the marine life in Maldives. It has been the most peaceful holiday ever and I would love to go back there.

Adventurous Bali

Bali has great seafood. Then there is quad biking, river rafting, and all possible adventure sports that you can think of. One can also shop for relics.

Ali MerchantPlaying parallel lead

Ali Merchant recently made a comeback in Rajan Shahi's Ye Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus and now he has bagged yet another show. He will soon enter Imagine's Looteri Dulhan as the parallel lead. He will play Abhinav's cousin brother Ronit, a fun loving guy who will have a romantic track with Billo (Supriya Kumari). Looks like he is back on track. Now only if he would shed the orange hair he has been sporting off late.
