High Court reposes faith in administration
Chandigarh, July 8 As the case came up for hearing this morning, the special Division Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Augustine George Masih called for placing on record a list of urgent requirements of the child and mother, to be provided with the intervention of the court. Before parting with the order, the Bench added it had no reason to doubt that the UT Administration would immediately swing into action and do the needful. The case will now come up for hearing on July 22. The High Court has already directed the UT Administration to open a bank account in the name of newly born child. The Bench had directed that the Chandigarh Administration, being the
principal guardian of the victim and her child, would open an account in the name of newly born child in a nationalised bank and inform the particulars to amicus curie in the case - senior advocate RS Cheema and Tanu Bedi. The Chandigarh Administration had earlier stated it would take full responsibility of upbringing the girl child, Pari, and her mother, the rape victim. The mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped by a sweeper of Nari Niketan. She complained of abdominal pain after shifting from Nari Niketan to Ashreya. After she was medically examined, she tested positive for pregnancy. The matter was then reported to the police. Passing orders against the termination of pregnancy of the victim, a Division Bench of the Supreme Court headed by the then Chief Justice, KG Balakrishnan, had held the medical opinion
given by the PGI favouring the continuation of pregnancy. The court also laid special emphasis on the desire expressed by the victim to deliver her baby. |

It was contended that presently a total of 13 million gallon water per day (MGD) was being supplied to Mohali, which included 10 MGD from Kajauli canal water and three MGD from the tubewells, whereas the requirement as of date was of 28 MGD. The Kajauli water works are located on the Bhakra mainline (BML) canal near Morinda in Ropar district from where the water requirements of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, including Chandimandir Cantonment are met.
