Jawa Yezdi Club Chandigarh is surely carrying the banner forward by celebrating its second World Jawa Yezdi Day on
July 10

It is often suggested - replace your old habits with new, but for some old habits there is always an exception. Like the habit of hanging around on an old bull like Jawa Yedzi!

Foreign Connection: Kjella Skjelvik from Norway has come down to Chandigarh to be part of World Jawa Day. A traveller-biker, Kjella owns two Jawas and terms it as an experience. “There are many Jawa Clubs across the world and I think it is getting popular in India as well.”

Cruising in Chandigarh, grabbing eyeballs, this habit could be real fun. And if you want to be a part of it, here is how and when. Jawa Yezdi Club Chandigarh is celebrating its second World Jawa Yezdi day on July 10, with the young and old fellas driving around and meeting up with their bikes in tow.

The club that came into existence last year now boasts of more members and also a level of increase in the inquisitiveness on the bike. “It is like an old habit, difficult to get over,” says Harpreet Shergill, one of the members behind bringing this club alive. “Jawa and Yezdi from 60s and 70s need no introduction.  Once known as the fast and forever bike on Indian biking scene, they were facing extinction until Jawa Yezdi Clubs Down South surfaced to save the marque.”  Jawa Yezdi Club Chandigarh looks forward to generating awareness about the bike, and getting it back on the road if possible. The members understand the tilt towards the new age bikes offering style, speed and comfort. But when it comes to Yezdi, the clubbers don’t think any bike can match up to this old machine.

Adds Pradeep Cheema, one of the club members from Punjab University who actively promotes Yezdi on Facebook. With more than 500 followers from Chandigarh alone, Pradeep has hundred and one reasons to like the bike. Well, not literally! He cites a few. “The bike would be available on a premium so it was called a dollar bike offering good reliability. This is one bike with two silencer mufflers, same kick and gear, and semi-automatic clutch,” he says.

Ditto for Kanwardeep Bhamra, who rides a blood orange Classic deluxe Yezdi, which has added a volume to his popularity chart. If this is too much raving about the bike, then this is just the beginning! For the members meet once a month at Lesiure Valley, Sector-10, to discuss about the Yezdi. The net result of all the discussion and bike ride is that almost 12 bikes are under the process of restoration on a Bobber or Café Racer pattern. (While a bobber is a mean-looking bare cosmetic bike with low-lying suspension and hanging handle bars,  a Café racer is basically a fast-tuned bike with ported cylinder and the bike supporting a typical single Café racer saddle, sans the lamp apparels.) Says Harpreet Shergill, “I believe youngsters would want to pull out their parents or grandparents Jawa Yezdi from the garage and get in back on the gravel.”

This year the club has also introduced t-shirts in light grey colour with the club’s White and Red Shield logo. On world Jawa Day, they plan to ride bikes on Chandigarh roads and showcase these at different places like Sector 17 plaza parking, Sector 34 Polka bakery market and Sector 32 Highway sweets parking. Be there to catch the smoking barrels!

The hand of god
There are some kids who are lucky, there are some who are not so. And there are some people who come as a blessing in their lives
Mona

Unclean, underprivileged kids braving the sun, the rain and the cold at the traffic signals move many hearts. While some feel great handing over change or eatables from the car window to them, others go a step ahead to ensure that these not-so-fortunate kids get a decent living. We get to you stories of a few who chose to bring about a change.

Sandeep Sharma, a yoga instructor, often got disturbed at the plight of some of his college-mates who came from not-so-well-off backgrounds. “Seeing them struggle tore my heart. It was then that I decided to do something that brought happiness in some dreary lives,” he shares. Sandeep chose to become a yoga instructor. Apart from the classes that he takes, he also keeps his date with Ashiana (an orphanage) kids at Panchkula. Summer sees regular workshops for the underprivileged kids. Just over with one such workshop at Mauli Jagran, says Sandeep, “This is what gives me satisfaction — to bring a smile on otherwise listless faces, giving them something they can use for life.”

Social work never figured or still does on Zulfikar Khan’s ‘to-do’ list. A known name now with Theatre Age, Zulfikar was all set for a Bollywood dream. After a degree in theatre, he moved to Mumbai. “Par vahan chan nahin mila (did not get contentment),” says Zulfikar. Once back, he started doing theatre; involved the shoeshine boys in the play and then, ‘one thing led to another’. Today Zulfikar and his band of children not only do theatre but are passing academic classes in flying colours, making careers in their chosen fields. What ties you to them? “I feel a person who has felt ‘hunger’ is more empathetic towards those who have the same plight,” says Zulfikar who rose above trying circumstances to become an inspiration to many others.

To Sushma Gupta, it was her domestic help’s little girl, that paved the way for work that became her lifeline. “I learnt about Jagriti, a school for the needy on the premises of DAV-8, Panchkula. Going, teaching there, helping in all those little ways brought immense joy,” shares Sushma. Soon, she was garnering help for the kids and got immense support from her family and friends.

Rahul and his wife Nandita, trained dancers, believe in the immense power of classical dance. Today, their class has disciples from good families as well as not-so-good, financially. Many girls, who work as maids, come to forget their dreary chores in these dance classes. “My mother has taught me to treat each human being as equal,” says Rahul. Many times, people object to having a mixed class, but, Rahul sticks to his principles. “I don’t mind losing a few hundred to a practice that gives me joy, which money can’t buy,” he shares. “Most satisfying is to see the positive change that the rigorous discipline of a classical dance brings,” he says with glint in his eye.

For Janhvi Sharma, a member of ‘Make A Difference’ (MAD), it was a chance workshop with the group. “I am no Mother Teresa,” she clears at the very outset. “I had some ‘vella’ (free) time so I decided to do something positive with it,” says this 22-year-old psychology student. Today, she is an active member of MAD, through with her core team with baseline tests and all set with a plan to give English language proficiency to kids in shelter homes, in and around the city. “MAD is my baby now and I wish to bring a change in these kids’ lives,” she chirps.

If only many more think like her, there wouldn’t be any gloomy faces at the signals!

The shoe story
Shoes are the most important accessory and girls know exactly what they want when it comes to footwear
Shuchita Sharma

So what is a girl's best friend? Of course, diamonds and chocolates top the list? Okay we get it, the list is endless, but footwear features somewhere at the top. Girls wherever they are just love shopping and shoes are almost always a part of the shopping expeditions. Be it ballerinas, flip-flops, stilettos, juttis or boots, they have to be on their shoe rack. Shoe fashion changes as often as the dresses, so in order to keep up with the latest fashion, shoe-shopping becomes a necessary evil. So here, we meet girls in tricity who don't mind splurging on the right shoes for their pretty feet.
Shoe therapy: Kavya Chandel with her collection of shoes.
Shoe therapy: Kavya Chandel with her collection of shoes.

Tarranum Chawla, a media student in Chandigarh, owns more than 20 pairs. She says, "There has to be a pair for every dress. You need different kinds of shoes to go with several outfits. So I have some formals, some casuals, boots, some slippers for random outings, and juttis." She says she doesn't mind street shopping if she likes the shoes, but prefers shopping from Mochi on a regular basis. As she shows her collection, the rack seems undersized to accommodate so many pairs. We find one in each colour, each style and each design.

Kavya Chandel, a commerce student, has another story to share. She says, "The first glance does it for me. The footwear I like on the first look, I don't hesitate in buying them, whether they are from a showroom or from a shop on the street. I have numerous pairs which I have worn just once or twice." Black seems to dominate her shoe rack, and heels are present in greater number than other types. As she is not so tall, she shares, she prefers wearing heels for the complete look. Also, her mum is shoe-freak too, so maybe it is in the genes.

We found Heena Kukreja in a popular market, searching for the perfect pumps for a formal party. After exploring various shops, she finally sighted them in Sector 17. As if to compensate, she bought three different pairs. A lawyer by profession, she said, "I liked three and could not choose between them. So I bought all of them. You never know, when I come to buy them, they might have been bought by someone else. So why take risk?"

“Even now if she goes to another shop, she will end up buying more pairs," says her friend. Be it a dance party or a graduation party, a movie outing or a first date, girls have to have the perfect shoe for every occasion.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Be a pillar of strength
Simmi Waraich

We are a simple middle class family. Our son has been using some capsules and medicines for 2-3 years now. His friends are not employed and blow the money they get from their parents. Once he jumped from the first floor when we had a fight. So I do not want to push him. I am trying to convince him to undergo treatment and his girlfriend is also trying to convince him.

Harmeet Singh, Bathinda.

Keep talking to him. If you are self employed, take him with you at times. Be a friend but do be clear about pocket money etc. Go out as often as a family. Also be a role model but do not be judgemental. Resolve family issues and be positive. Use caring statements for him when he is in a cordial mood- like "I care for you, Son." Discuss future plans and how to go about them. Ask him his concerns regarding treatment. Suggest talking to a psychiatrist in the vicinity.

Kids are different persons

I am a 40-year-old woman active in social work. My daughter got married to a boy who was from a very different background- he is from a poor family and his parents are very different from us. I never expected this from her and it has upset me a lot. My husband and I are very upset- I cannot sleep at night and feel like staying aloof. I have lost weight too. I do not feel like seeing her.

gurpreet, Panchkula

It is a difficult time for you and your daughter. We as parents do have expectations from children and often forget that they are their own people.

It may be that at times children make decisions we do not understand. Still she is your daughter and your relationship with her should include being with her in times when you disagree as well as agree with each other.

That is what family is all about. Every person is different- be with her through this time just as you would have through good times. Get counselling for yourself and rule out depression.

Playing baddie!
Vasudha Gupta

With the entire industry focused on positive characters, there are very few who actually plan on making it big playing shades of gray! One such 28-year-old is Kartaar Cheema. Ready to play the bad boy in Yaar Anmule, he is excited about his rich, handsome and good-looking role in the Punjabi flick.
Role bound: Kartaar Cheema
Role bound: Kartaar Cheema

Coming from a humble background, he is bent on ensuring he manages to make his parents proud. Kartar completed his Masters in Theatre and Television from Patiala University and knew this was the right field for him. “I have always been inspired by absurd theatre. Fortunately, my professor, Parminder Singhji, constantly motivated me,” he says. Now living in the hub of the entertainment world, he is trying hard to ensure Mumbai grows on him.

Focusing on negative roles in Hindi cinema, he is upbeat about signing his first movie in B-Town. “When it comes to shades of gray, it’s really not everyone’s cup of tea. It needs a lot of guts,” he says. Despite being an ardent fan of Bhagat Singh, he is adamant on not even trying for a positive role in Bollywood. His justifications are crystal clear, “ Hindi cinema is such that you have to be par excellence to be able to survive. When playing shades of gray, the probability of survival is longer,” he clarifies.

Kartar has 200 Punjabi videos to his credit and has worked in six Punjabi movies. Since firsts are always special, for Kartar it’s been his first Punjabi video. “It was Yaar Jattan de munde. My first movie, Kabbadi-Ek Mohabbat is also very dear to me,” he shares. Elaborating about Siyasat, where he played the lead role, he says, “The one word used by my character in the movie Daaneya, has now become a popular takiya kalam,” he laughs.

With a dream project based on Bhagat Singh in his mind, he is certain to open his production house. Talking about his fascination with the young freedom fighter, he says, “When you look at his approach in life, Bhagat Singh started a huge revolution with a harmless bomb. To have such a level of maturity in thoughts at such a young age is rare.”

Love for theatre is something that Kartar hopes to sustain in his life. “Theatre is something that has an impact on people. It is usually based on a social message. I hope to come back at a point where I have the capability to attract the audience and ensure my message in conceived in the right way,” he says. A multifaceted personality, Kartar has always found inspiration in Punjabi literature. Sharing his thoughts on the same, he says, “When you talk of writers like Avtar Singh Pash and Bhagat Singh, they have made a lot of contribution in promoting Punjabi culture through their writings.”

Talking about change in Punjabi cinema, he feels NRIs are playing a big role. “Cinema undergoes a change when concepts stop attracting an audience, this is where changes happen. The problems arise when budgets are less. Sikh culture has overwhelming number of warriors, the stories of whom can make for exceptional scripts,” he opines.

ROAD RAGE
Ride a magnet
Mukesh Kharbanda

The energy drink of our vehicles seems to be getting costlier with each passing day. Should the notion be to keep feeding them or graduate in technology for the future? Ever thought of sitting in your car the same way, putting the regular driving gear but reaching a magnetic track to swoosh towards the desired destination?

Imagine a scenario where you won't have to deal with the deadly traffic, park your car at the metro stations to board crowded trains! You can cruise past the roads in the comfort of your own car on the magnetic tracks build for travelling without consuming any fuel! The high-speed convenient smooth travel in the future might be a solution to all our fuel consumption worries. You would enjoy the path tread without having to worry about re-filling stations and ever-blazing fuel prices anymore!

Fuels derived from resources other than petroleum are on the run to decrease our dependence on imported oil. Research institutes to NGOs to the government agencies, everybody has realised the urgency of the matter and are putting in their all to develop these so called alternative fuels. Grants for such researches to tax benefits to the ones using them, steps are being taken. Despite all this, alternative fuels, be it hydrogen, CNG or electricity, have failed to convince the masses until now.

A ray of hope, a concept that might turn the tables in our favour is Maglev. This six-letter word derived from Magnetic Levitation, is a system of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles, predominantly trains, using magnetic levitation from a very large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. Energy in Maglev transportation is used to accelerate the train and may be regained when the train slows down via regenerative braking system. The main part of the energy is needed to force the Vehicle through the air drag. The Maglev trains are powered on electromagnetism. This method has the potential to be faster, quieter and smoother than wheeled mass transit systems.

This model would require a lot of research, capital, planning and impeccable execution but is a faint ray of hope to deal with the array of swayed scenarios, awaiting us in the near future.

it’s rocking
Sing along Senorita

What makes this one, song of the week is the fact that one feels like plugging to it again and again. Senorita, sung by the actors, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol is surprisingly a melodious track. It has a certain feel good factor about it. The Goan and Spanish music influences in the song make it different from the usual Bollywood tracks. Video is an add-on and so are the A-list actors. Fans tell us more why they loved the song.

Dual profit

I love humming this song. It has fresh music, trademark factor of music produced by the hit trio, Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The actors have done a good job with the mike. It thus sounds original and the experiment has paid off. The song is already a hit online and even the video is fun to watch. I even liked it more than Ik Junoon, the hit track from this album.

Ashish Sharma, an IT firm employee.

Sing it again

We all knew that Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar can croon a bit as they have done in their earlier flicks, Kites and Rock On respectively but the real surprise was Abhay Deol. All the actors in the film have done full justice to the song. Senorita is a catchy number. The remixed version is even better. Spanish lyrics make the track really special in the album. Another hit from Shankar Ehsaan Loy.

Anuj Bajaj, a businessman

Fresh take

Be it the music, lyrics or video, Senorita has everything that makes a song climb the charts. It's a great dance number, lively enough to make people plug in to it again and again. The actors have done a great job. Hrithik is at his best when it comes to dancing and Farhan and Abhay are looking very charming in the song. What more you can ask for from a track by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Senorita is a lovely song.

Bollywood impact

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty feels Bollywood is pure magic and he apparently realised this when he was caught in paparazzi frenzy over glamorous actress Celina Jaitly!

Premier speaking recently to reporters recalled the moment wherein he realised how impactful and magical Bollywood was, when people were going crazy over the beautiful actor. “I found myself surrounded by dozens of photographers in the cool night air. The cameras flashed in my face and it was mesmerising, overwhelming, intoxicating until one of the photographers distinctly told me, ‘’Sir, you’re ruining my shot of Celina Jaitly’’. I was zapped. I have never been able to recover from that...but that gave me a good sense of how crazy people are for Bollywood,” McGuinty said. Well, looks like after Egypt, the gorgeous actor is taking Canada by storm!

Fun and fearless

Daring debut: Mahesh Bhatt’s upcoming film Murder 2, the sequel to Murder, is studded with lot of fresh things. Right from the thrilling script to hot pairing of Emraan Hashmi & Jacqueline, it has it all. But what caught our attention is Bhatts’ new find - the very beautiful Sulagna, who makes her debut with Murder 2.

Unlike other debutantes, who have less scope to show their bit with the first film itself, Sulagna has a significant role in director Mohit Suri’s sequel. The delicate looking lady will be seen doing some dangerous stunts. However, she never showed a sign of panic and performed the daredevil stunts. Everyone from the Murder 2 team swears by her bravery. After all, the pretty and petite, Sulagna comes from a much disciplined army family background and is well acquainted to deal with it.

Even Sulagna feels the reason behind her bold and fearless attitude comes from the fact that she has been brought up in the army environment. Says Sulagna, “Yes, I think somewhere my exposure to army world proved very helpful while performing the stunts.”

A toast to a decade

Director Farhan Akhtar is all set to celebrate 10 years of his directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai, a film that showcased the Indian youth in a new light. The director will take people down the memory lane by screening the film along with its cast and crew at Taj Enlighten Film Society’s Naya Cinema Festival.  Pranav Ashar, founder member of Taj Enlighten Film Society confirms, “The festival is called Naya Cinema Festival which will be held from July 15 to July 31.

Farhan’s Dil Chahta Hai was released exactly ten years back on July 24 and we plan to have a screening exactly on the same day. The festival will celebrate directors whose debuts or second films have been path-breaking. Among the confirmed names are Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane and Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. The festival will be held at Cinemax, NCPA, Edward cinema and some other places.”

Speaking about the filmmaker-actor, Pranav said, “Farhan was the first one to become a member of this society. He has always been very supportive. In fact, when we approached him to inaugurate the festival, he immediately agreed. The film had received tremendous praise from critics for portraying contemporary Indian youth. Apart from the screening, he will have an interactive session with the audience and speak about the making of the film.”

Damage control

Shah Rukh Khan in Always Kabhi Kabhi: The producer appeared in a song called Antenna at the end of the film. The problem was that the movie already had a super boring and long video of the song featuring its own cast so one would not have the patience to sit through another video of a bad song. Even SRK couldn’t salvage this tuneless song and pointless movie!

No holds barred

Aamir Khan in Delhi Belly: The maverick producer deservedly indulged himself at the end of the film. I hate you (like I love you) is a fabulous song and we love the retro feel and look of the video! It is a fitting end. We love the way Aamir has uninhibitedly gone all out in the video with his wacky avatar and pelvic thrusts. He is clearly having fun!

Ever ready

Salman Khan in Ready: The song Character dheela hai is an item featuring Salman in different avatars opposite a sizzling Zarine Khan. It is his entry song. The lyrics are quite funny and the tune is ultra catchy. Salman looks very good in the video and adds his star power to it.

Rock star
John Abraham in 7 Khoon Maaf: We know he is one of the heroes of the film but he was topless through most of it and had a rock song called O Mama so we have branded him an “item boy.” He even had a scene where he wore no more than a guitar. Definitely an item boy!

Dream come true

Ali Zafar in Luv Ka The End: The Prince of Pakistani Pop literally plays Prince Charming in the movie. He plays pop star Freddie Kapoor who performs the song Fun fun fanaa at the end of the movie. He also asks newly single Rhea (Shraddha Kapoor), his biggest fan out on a date after dropping her and her friends home! Dreams do come true!

Chilled out

Ranbir Kapoor in Chillar Party: Ranbir looks completely at ease no matter what he does! He is the embodiment of a tapori in the song and a very likable one in that. He completely pulls off the vibrant and crazy clothes and his expressions are spot-on. We also like what the children say at the end of the video. This song is way better than Dhinka chika! The movie is being marketed on this Amit Trivedi composition. —HRM

Priya's dream role

Priya Bathija will be seen playing Krishna's (Vishal Karwal) wife Rukmini in the upcoming show Dwarkadheesh -Bhagwan Shree Krishna on Imagine TV. The actress has already started shooting for the show and is very excited since this her first mythological show. We find out more from Priya herself.

Why did you agree to play Rukmini in Dwarkadheesh?

The first reason is that I have never done a mythological show and wanted to experiment with my roles and look. I have played different characters in all my shows -be it Khwahish, where I played a Muslim or Kasamh Se, where I played Ram Kapoor's pampered Punjabi daughter or more recently Babba Aiso Varr Dhundo, where I played a Marwadi character. Secondly, Rukmini was Lord Krishna's wife and I feel blessed to play a character, who is also Laxmi Ma's avatar. It is difficult adjusting in Vadodara, where the show is being shot but the role is so great that I don't mind.

What was your first reaction when you were approached for the role?

Initially, I was asked to give a test and I happily agreed. My joy grew no bounds when I was shortlisted and later finalised for this role.

Have you done any research about Rukmini?

I did not know that Rukmini was Krishna's wife. I got to know after my parents informed me about the same. My father said that I am lucky to play such a role. I have now started reading about Rukmini's life so that I can play the role well.

Tell us about your look in the show?

Rukmini was a princess, so my look is very grand but it is too early to reveal more.

How is it shooting with the team of the show?

I have just shot for four or five days and it has been a great experience. We have a superb team and I want to thank everyone from the creative team to my stylist and makeup dada. It takes me about two hours to get into Rukmini's look and everyone has been so co-operative and helpful.

What kind of appeal do mythological shows have?

Mythological shows definitely have their own fan base. My parents and sister watch such shows religiously. This show is interesting because a lot of people know about Krishna's life before marriage but not many are aware of what happened after he married Rukmini.

How religious are you?

I am quite religious. In fact, I have got my mandir with me to Vadodara. I do pooja once a day but I am not over religious. I believe that instead of praying the whole day, one should have a pure mind.

Which mythological shows have you watched?

I have not watched too many but as a kid I used to watch Mahabharat with my grandparents and sister. — HRM
