Ganges traces the journey of the most venerated river in the world from Gaumukh to the Bay of Bengal

Starting from Gaumukh in the Himalayas, the mighty Ganga meanders through cities, towns and villages and empties into the Bay of Bengal near Sagar Island — covering a distance of around 2,525 km. Ganges on Tuesday at 7 P.M. on the Discovery Channel follows the venerated river, as it crashes turbulently down the Himalayas, then slows into comatose lethargy until it reaches Allahabad where it metamorphoses into an imposing river, thanks to the fresh waters from Yamuna. Less than a 100 km from Varanasi, at the border with Bihar, it changes shape again to its final adult state — a huge and dangerous river prone to floods and the ensuing havoc. Yet, the devout believe that it has descended from the heavens thorough the locks of Lord Shiva. In effect, the river takes a variety of roles — of a revered Goddess that cleanses people of their diseases, spreads prosperity in the fields and, according to Hindu belief, washes the soul of all sins. — NF
