10 challaned under Tobacco Control Act
Patiala, June 23 Giving information in this regard, nodal officer Dr Vikas Goyal said under the directions of Civil Surgeon Dr Jatinder Kaur, the three-member team, including Deputy Mass Education and Information Officer Kishan Kumar, District BCC Facilitator Sarabjeet Singh, issued challans to 10 shopkeepers under the Tobacco Control Act, 2003, and collected a fine of Rs 1,700 as they had not put up proper boards on their shops. He further informed that the content on the board should include that tobacco was not sold to anyone under the age of 18 years and that tobacco caused cancer. He said Patiala was already number one in Punjab in issuing challans to defaulters and the department was committed in making Patiala a smoke-free district. |

Cop, another arrested
for rape
Kurali, June 23 The accused have been identified as Jagtar Singh Manhera and Amandeep Singh Nadiali. Nadiali was a police employee, who joined the police force few days ago, and was posted at Bahadurgarh village, Patiala. Both were produced before the court today and sent to judicial remand. Meanwhile, member of Punjab State Minority Commission Dalip Singh Pandhi today met the family of the victim and assured justice. He said that the Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, should have issued Rs 25,000 compensation to the victim’s family and added that matter would be taken up in the next meeting of commission scheduled on June 29. “We will also ensure that the victim is summoned to the police station only in the presence of a policewoman,” he assured the family. |

PTU stance confusing
Dera Bassi, June 23 According to information available, these include 13 colleges affiliated to Punjab Technical University
(PTU). Some have even been put in the list of top 20 colleges on the basis of academic and overall performance by the
PTU. This is being done against the recommendations of the AICTE. Some students of Dera Bassi and
Lalru, wishing to get admission in engineering, say the stance of the PTU is causing confusion. The AICTE has not been granting extension in approval to some colleges due to complaints against the institutes. The students have demanded that PTU clear the air for aspiring engineering students. Around 117 institutes and colleges in different parts of India, listed among defaulters by the
AICTE, have been asked to appear at the AICTE head office in New Delhi with relevant documents on separate days. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Technical Education, says the matter has not been brought to his notice till now. The PTU Registrar has declined to comment on the
issue. Buta Singh, PTU Dean Academics, says they have not received any notification in writing. He has admitted that colleges concerned have been asked to present their documents at the office of the
AICTE. On the list of top 20 colleges, he says it is based on data. He has asserted that action will be taken if the university receives information on the issue in writing from the government. |

60 conferred certificates
Kharar, June 23“ Gabria distributed certificates and stipend to 60 students, who underwent training under a special programme - Hunar Se Rozgar - of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Gurvinder Singh Bahra, chairman of Rayat-Bahra Group, said the programme was meant for youth in the age group of 18-25 years. Gurvinder Bahra said all students had been recruited in hospitality. Students with 90 per cent attendance were paid Rs 1,500 for food and beverage course and Rs 2,000 for food production course. |

Railway employees stage dharna
Kalka, June 23 Informing this, Subhash Sharma, branch secretary of the NRMU, said the union leaders severely condemned the Railway Board, New Delhi, for its lethargic attitude towards various pending demands for the past couple of years. They alleged that more than 2 lakh seats were lying vacant since past more than a decade, but the railway board had not taken any initiative to fill these seats. Similarly, the discrepancies of Sixth Pay Commission have not rectified till date. They also demanded that more than 15 per cent of senior supervisors should be given gazetted status. Youth commits suicide Ambala: Manoj (25), a resident of Yamunanagar, who was employed in a private nursing home as a laboratory technician at Naraingarh, committed suicide by consuming celphos tablets. According to the police, Manoj committed suicide since he was mentally disturbed over the dispute of his sister Pravesh. She was married to Jagat Singh some time back. But Jagat Singh, along with other family members, allegedly tortured him and his sister Parvesh. He was mentally disturbed. A case under Section 498-A of the IPC and divorce was pending in the court. The police has registered a case against Jagat Singh, his brother Balwinder Singh and uncle Satbir Singh, all residents of Yamunanagar, in this connection. Student dies in college Dera Bassi: A student of final year of BTech of computer science engineering in Swami Parmanand College was found dead in the college’s bathroom. As per information, Anoop Sehgal, a resident of Ambala City, went to his college yesterday for the last exam of his degree after completing the training. During the examination he went to toilet but did not return. Later he was found dead in the toilet. The police had registered a case and the body was sent for the postmortem in the Dera Bassi, Civil Hospital. SHO, Dera Bassi, said there was no sign of injury on the body. |

SGPC demands early poll
Ambala, June 23 Talking to mediapersons here Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Chief Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal threatened to move an agitation in case immediate polls were not held. He said entire Sikh community was annoyed with the Union Government for delaying elections. He had urged the Gurdwara Election Commission for early elections to the SGPC. Though some parties and religious groups had been demanding some more time, the Shiromani Akali Dal was in favour of early elections, he said. He added that SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar had repeatedly requested Union Home Ministry for holding elections for which Gurdwara Poll Committee had already made necessary arrangements, but UPA Government was delaying the matter thus hurting mental and religious sentiments of the community. |
2 cases of cheating registered in city
Chandigarh, June 23 In a separate case, Jagat Pal, a resident of Kaimbwala, alleged that Pankaj Dixit, a resident of Kanpur, cheated him by taking Rs 1,02,800 for installing a mobile phone tower. However, he failed to install the tower and also fled with the money. |

Man hangs himself to death
Chandigarh, June 23 The police found the highly decomposed body of Vinay Kumar, who was employed with a private company, hanging from the fan at his first floor of the house. Vinay was suffering from severe depression and is survived by his wife and three children - two daughters and a son. The family told the police that Vinay used to isolate himself and stay in the first floor of the accommodation for days altogether while they stayed on the second floor. The police is also probing whether he had a family dispute as the body was at least two days old and his family residing in the same house on the second floor never got to know of his death. No suicide note was recovered from the spot and police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. |

Budding archers hone skills
Chandigarh, June 23 For archers, hitting the “red dot” is an ultimate stroke. The game might not need an extensive physical strength or hard endurance, but all one need is concentration to achieve success in the game. The game is among one of the expensive games and has many followers in the city. Not only young boys but girls also take part in the sports enthusiastically. The players are, however, using their own kit to practice at the centre. The coaching centre, which stared in March 2010 has achieved a lot in a short span of time. Many players of the coaching centre have represented the city at various national-level archery tournaments. “Our coaching centre is one among the best coaching centres, all we need is independent identity and a particular place where the players can concentrate to improve their skills. The talent is here, but all we need is to give a boost to the players, so they could achieve laurels at the national and international level,” said Vikas Shastri, former international player and coach at the centre. Besides being an expensive game, players from not only the city but from periphery areas also come for routine practice at the centre. A basic kit of an archer i.e. a wooden kit costs about Rs 5,000, whereas international standard kit for professional players starts from Rs 1.5 lakh. Earlier, archer Anil Kumar, who recently won a gold medal in the team event of Asian Grand Prix, was trained here, while trainees, Vijay Kumar and Pinki Rana, bagged a sliver medal in the recently held all-India inter-university championship. Notably, the team from the centre also competed in the recently held 34th National Games at Jharkhand. According to the coach, the coaching centre would be provided with a total kit of around Rs 7 lakh, which includes four bows, 12 dozen arrows made of hard aluminum carbon. Besides international-standard equipment, 12 sets, including fingertips, arm guard, chest guard, bow, arrow, bow stand made of Indian wooden style, would be provided to the players. Plans to shift centre However, range of the target area that is about 80 metres at present should be 90 metres, according to the rules. Keeping in mind the basic requirement, the authorities and coach are planning to shift the coaching centre to the Post Graduate College for Girls, Sector 11. Plumber’s son, archer in the making Harnam Chand, a student of Class IX of Government Senior Secondary School, Kaimbala, whose father is a plumber, comes to the centre for a daily routine practice. Interestingly, Harnam has represented the city in the recently held National Games (U-16) at Pune. “My father is a plumber by profession, but he gifted me an archery set, so that I could excel in the game. My only aim is to represent the nation at the international level and bring laurels to the country. I am working hard on my skills,” said Harnam, while regretting of not winning any top honours in the recently held National Games. |

Chandigarh, June 23 Sumit got the better of Rajat 3-1 to lift the title. Sumit had breaks of 40 and 38 to win the first frame 100-40. Rajat came back with breaks of 40 and 36 to win the second frame 100-66. In the third frame, Sumit came from behind and finished with a wafer-thin 100-99 lead. In the fourth frame, Sunit had a break of 48 to win 100-49. Chandigarh, June 23 The city team defeated Kaithal by five wickets. While batting first, Kaithal were bundled out on 102 runs in the allotted 40 overs. Piyush contributed 34 runs in the team’s total.
