The Good Doctor
Dr Nitin Behl

The region is home to some of the best medical schools in the country offering a wide choice to students. The government as well as private institutions are evolving constantly by adding new specialisations and facilities for the docs of the next generation

Welcome to the world of doctors. Medicine is one of the most highly sought after professions among students mainly due to the fact that it offers prospects of a financially as well as a socially satisfying career. Despite an increasing number of students opting for engineering courses, the medical profession is like gold whose value increases with each passing year. In order to step into the hallowed portals of a medical college, a student is required to clear a tough competitive examination. Those who clear the entrance exam are then required to undergo rigorous five-year training followed by a year of internship before they earn their degree. The recent trend towards specialisation has made the study period even longer. The decision to choose medicine as a career is, therefore, not an easy one and not all students who are academically excellent may seek entry into medicine. They also have certain apprehensions in their mind while joining a medical school.

What makes a good medical college?

A doctor's profession involves a lot of hard work and at the same time, it gives the satisfaction of healing patients at times even saving lives. To be in this profession is more a responsibility than a privilege

It’s a very important question for medical students and their parents. Hospital infrastructure, teaching faculty, student-teacher ratio, patient influx, available technologies, campus facilities are some of the various factors which make a good medical college.

A constant endeavour of the college should be to make advanced medical technology affordable and serve people from all strata of society. Students should pick up not just knowledge, skill and attitude but also take lead in providing healthcare and engage in globally-competitive research. A good hospital is different because of its internal culture of excellence. Students should also get trained in philosophy, ethics and patient management, foraying into new specialisations, research and treatment modalities. More and more colleges, now are trying to provide all these and much more. Better campuses, internet facilities, wi-fi connectivity, cultural and sports facilities are some of the ingredients that add an extra punch to
medical education.

Government vs private

Another question commonly asked by students is whether to opt for government or private medical college? Traditionally, medical education in government colleges was considered the best. The government-run institutes score better on infrastrucre, have established hospitals, qualified teachers, good influx of patients and importantly lower admission fees. But in recent years private colleges are doing their best to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure, better student-teacher ratio, "poaching best doctors", campus and hostel facilities to enhance their reputation and improve the quality of medical education. Colleges like Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, Manipal University, Mangalore, are some of the examples of better private colleges. A thorough checking of the affiliation and necessary certifications is a must for those choosing private colleges as the authorised medical councils recognise a college only after it fulfills the quality education standards.

The test of best

Many websites and magazines have tried to come out with list of colleges considered as the best but there is no standardisation in their listing. Still, for the students some of the best colleges (not in any order) are All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Madras Medical College, Chennai, Grant Medical College, Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai, overtook Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Some of the better colleges in north India (excluding Delhi) are DMC, Ludhiana, GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak.

The demand for medical professionals is increasing tremendously with the unfortunate upsurge of diseases and ailments day by day. With an upsurge in the number of super speciality hospitals within the country and abroad employment oppotunities have also increased manifold. These, along with liberalisation of economy bring better opportunities for the professionals in terms of remuneration, research and working facilities.

After M.B.B.S students can also opt for newer courses like clinical research, hospital administration, biomedical research, biotechnology, genetic engineering and nuclear medicine.

Other than Allopathy, medicine also covers different systems like Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani etc.

Dentistry

Apart from the choices in MBBS, dentistry also offers a lot of career options. Dental disorders have become common now and the awareness about various treatments has increased the scope manifold. Today dentists can change a patient's appearance by using a wide variety of cosmetic dental procedures. Specialised subjects like periodontics (care of gums and the diseases that might afflict them), oral pathology (diagnosis for diseases that affect the mouth) and orthodontics (straightening and aligning teeth and jaws) have all enhanced the scope in this field. There has been a massive upsurge in the number of dental colleges in the region, especially in Punjab over the past few years. The Christian Medical College, Ludhiana and Government Dental College, Amritsar are among premier institutions in Punjab for budding dental surgeons.

Good opportunities are available in public and private sectorfor those with a BDS degree. They can join dental departments in hospitals, nursing homes, dental clinics and health departments as well as in teaching departments of dental colleges apart from running own clinics. Research work in pharma companies producing oral care products and medicines is another option. Qualified dental surgeons can also become consultants to glamorous people, including models and film artists which could offer them huge money. Apart from making professional career in India, one can go abroad for better pay-package and career prospects. It has been found that the average annual earning of a dental surgeon in US is around $ 110,000 or so which is much higher as compared to that in India. Developed nations like UK and Australia also offer handsome salary to Indian dental surgeon for their expertise in the field.

So here’s wishing all the medical aspirants, best of luck for their future. One must remember a doctor, like anyone else who has to deal with human beings, each of them unique, cannot be a scientist; he is either, like the surgeon, a craftsman, or, like the physician, an artist. This means that in order to be a good doctor a man must also have a good character, that is to say, whatever weaknesses and foibles he may have, and he must love his fellow human beings and desire their good before his own.
