Five get life term in Malhi murder case
Ropar, June 15 The court held accused Bachittar Singh and Lakhvir from Bhauwal, Lakhwinder Singh from Saidpur, Ajwinder Singh and Baljit Singh Beihara guilty of murder and awarded them life imprisonment as well as Rs 5,000 fine. Those who fail to pay fine will have to serve one year of imprisonment. Malhi (27) was shot dead when he returning with his three friends after attending a marriage at Anandpur Sahib. All four were on two motorcycles. Around 11.30 pm when they reached near Sangatpur village, some car-borne youths attacked them. The assailants fired three shots, killing Malhi on the spot. The shots were fired from a .12 bore gun. The police had recovered a mobile phone, sharp-edged weapons and a pair of slippers from the crime scene. On April 29, the police arrested four persons, including Bachittar Singh, Baljeet Singh, Lakhvir Singh and Ajwinder Singh, from the Morinda railway station for the murder. They were planning to leave the state. |

Police to submit report on Agnivesh’s remarks
Ambala, June 15 Viresh Shandilya, national president of Anti-Terrorist Front of India (ATFI) and general secretary of the World Brahmin Federation, had filed a writ petition under Sections 295 A, 153 A and 153B of the IPC demanding action against Swami Agnivesh for his objectionable comments made on May 18 in Srinagar along with separatist leader Shahid Ali Shah Gelani against the Hindu religion, terming the yatra a religious stunt. The comments had evoked criticism for hurting the sentiments of the Hindus. Rakesh Kumar, secretary, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), also criticised Swami Agnivesh for conspiring to separate Jammu and Kashmir from India and called for his social boycott. Vishwa Hindu Parishad members also warned the state government against creating hurdles in the ongoing yatra. |

Son assaults mother over land dispute
Ambala, June 15 According to sources, Surjit Kaur, wife of Karnail Singh and a resident of Ghel Kalan village, sustained serious injuries when Hans Raj attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon over a land dispute. Surjit Kaur was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala, where her condition is stated to be stable. A case has been registered against Hans Raj with the police. |
Four arrested for robbery at eunuchs’ dera
Panchkula, June 15 The CIA team arrested Jagan, alias Longa, a resident of Pinjore; Mitta, a resident of Mundi Kharar, Mohali; Latta, a resident of Kharar; and Kala, a resident of Kurali; and produced them before a local court, which remanded them in three-day police custody. The incident dates back to May 4 when over 10 masked robbers, armed with pistols, swords, baseball bats and sticks swooped down on 10 eunuchs along with their dera head inside their dera and robbed them of Rs 50 lakh in cash and jewellery, including 800 gm gold. The accused had scaled over 8-foot boundary wall of the dera and entered its main room where the eunuchs were asleep. They had also taken the eunuchs hostage for an hour inside the dera before fleeing with the booty. The police said the other accused involved in the robbery were at large and were in the possession of the booty. The robbers had carried out surveillance of the dera and had the knowledge of the absence of security personnel inside the dera, the police added. |

3 booked for assault
Zirakpur, June 15 Cylinder blast
A major tragedy was averted in Nagla Bazigar Basti in Zirakpur when an LPG cylinder burst in their house on Wednesday morning. Household goods were destroyed in the blast. According to Ramakant, owner of the house, the incident occurred when he was preparing tea and the cylinder burst causing fire. A fire tender from Dera Bassi controlled the fire in half an hour. |

Anandi Gulati case: One more arrested
Chandigarh, June 15 The accused has been identified as Vishal, a property dealer from Jalandhar. He was produced in court and was remanded to police custody. The police said Vishal along with co-accused Simarjot had blackmailed Anandi’a mother Shashi Gulati and told her they would post obscene pictures of Anandi on a social networking site. However, they were not in possession of any such picture, the police had said. They had demanded Rs 25 lakh from the couple. Simorjot was arrested last week. |

Soccer meet for senior players in July
Chandigarh, June 15 The authorities have finally decided to organise a soccer tournament in July for senior level players. As there used to be no tournament for senior players, many of them opted to move to other cities. Earlier, the authorities while releasing the annual calendar for 2008-09, had decided to include a tournament for the city colleges. The prize money for which was Rs 1 lakh. However, this year the authorities are still undecided about the prize money. According to the annual calendar 2011-12, the senior -league (above 22 years) will be organised in July and August. The tournament will be held at the football stadium, Sector 17. The team will be charged an entry fee of Rs 500. On the other hand, the association has planned to introduce another football tournament for financial institutions, corporations and corporate houses. However, the final decision will be taken after the executive committee meeting of the body. Participating teams will be allowed to include some players from outside in their teams. The matches will be played on holidays and weekends. The matches will be played in four quarters instead of a lemon break.
