He came, we saw, he stayed…
We are joined by a fellow colleague who is, apparently, attending a press conference after a long time. "Is it like this these days? I mean this paraphernalia, so many people. Are they all journalists? There is no place to sit! Is it like this these days?" she wore this 'what's going on' look till the action actually began. A three-hour long wait and no one really irked. They didn't mind, surprisingly! There was a slight 'let's walk out' rumour in the ballroom at Taj on Thursday evening, but nothing really happened. The hosts announced 'he will be joining us in two minutes.' Hearts are racing, faster than Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari. Just then, an unmindful bouncer whispered in our ears — Abhi time lageyga, bhai is having a bath. What! Bath! And we are waiting here? Does he have any idea? The bouncer shrugged his shoulder, and went back to join the human chain meant to protect the celebrity from any public damage. More wait…the room roared, cheered, hooted, roared more and cheered more. Yes, it was him on the stage. The hero of the masses; the Dabangg star - Salman Khan. The cheering, shouting won't end. But we are ready, and so is the star, looking quite disinterested. (That Salman doesn't like press conferences is a known fact). "Ready is a situational comedy. There is nothing of the extra-marital affair thing. It is simple and fun," he talks about his upcoming movie 'Ready', which is already a rage for its songs and teasers. 'Character Dhila', the song, is soaring on the music charts. A journo, new to the ways of the sometimes weird, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, sometimes nasty Salman happens to ask him about his 'Character' in the song. (She shouldn't have, we all looked at each other). "Mera character iss song main utna dhila hai jitna apka." Yes, people this is Salman. C'mon you should have known! Salman is all by the heart, a fan shares the information with us. We nod in absolute approval. Even when Sallu bhai has always been unlucky in love, he has the knack of discovering new talent. Read Sneha Ullal, Asin, Sonakshi Sinha - ladies who have got a break in Bollywood because of bhai. "If something makes Salman's head turn, I am sure it would make the public's head turn as well," Salman answers unabashedly. You agree? Secretly, you could. A new face in his new movie, the norm is simple. He has nothing to lose, any which ways it is Salman who will hog the limelight! It is he who would be all over the posters, on CD and DVD covers. Another journalist happens to have some issues with no picture of Asin on the CD. "I will send you the entire CD on Asin, will this do," Salman has a solution to it. "Let me be all over the place. What is the problem with it as long as I decide to be that way? There was a time you didn't see me much, I wasn't doing great movies, but now I am so let me be." Salman is all heart, the fan standing close finds it right to repeat the observation. Probably! He runs the Being Human Foundation known to do a lot of charity. And yes he is a painter as well. He dabbles in production too. "Am I to be blamed for doing all this?" Salman again, on being asked when did he decide to do many things at one go. "Being Human is a charitable organisation, where the entire money is invested for the betterment of kids and others who need help. We are not making any profit out of it." So far so good, Salman, known to snap in the middle of the interviews is doing a good job, and so are we! It's a comeback, can't mess with it? "This is what the media thinks. I am shooting for Bodyguard in Patiala, so I thought I would come to Chandigarh to answer your questions. This is it, and you call it media savvy, I don't know what savvy means," Salman Khan adds. Salman hasn't seen any superhero so far and his latest movies, taking a clue from South Indian action movies, are trying to present him as one. "We haven't copied any plot from the South, anything good in terms of camera is what you see in my movies. They copy from our movies, we copy from theirs, this goes on," Salman winds up without any causality reported! Upcoming movies —Dabangg 2, Kick, Most Wanted, Tom and Jerry and co-producing Chillar Party in association with UTV. Get READY! jasmine@tribunemail.com |
An architect’s lens
Perspectives d'architecte is an exhibition of photographs put up by a young French architect-photographer Tiphanie Fievet. Pictures clicked on her travels, some 22 frames in black and white are up for display at Alliance Francaise de Chandigarh. An architect, Tiphanie's photographs are mainly buildings but not the outer facades. Mostly works of celebrated architects in her favourite cities in France, Tiphanie's lens explores the lesser known sides of the famous buildings - the backside view or angles not known. The contemporary architecture of Nantes where Tiphanie studied and Les Sables d'Olonne, her hometown are part of the frames displayed. The play of light and shadow accentuate the different features. "Buildings are not reflection of people who live in them. But as an architect my endeavour is to make homes that people are happy to live in or places that people enjoy being in," she shares. Her take on photography: "It permits the architect in me to detail the spaces already lived in and experienced by others." This young architect is all too happy to be in Le Corbusier's Chandigarh that she has mastery on. "It's heartening to see all the buildings that I have studied in detail in real. And, then I can capture them with my camera too," shares Tiphanie, ecstatic after a visit to Capitol Complex. Her impression on Chandigarh, "Corbusier's designs are similar in France and India though the buildings are vertical there and horizontal here," she shares. Does it work, the two countries being far too different in terms of climate and lifestyle? "Few things work like the optimum use of light and air circulation. I don't think concrete is a good option for Chandigarh according to this place's climate. But then we can give Le Corbusier the benefit of doubt. He hadn't been in this country for long when he started to work on Chandigarh," she adds. After her first exhibition as well as a visit to India that gets over a few days, Tiphanie is going back to her home town. "I want to work abroad, gain more knowledge," she says. But more importantly, Tiphanie is part of 'emergency architects' a self-initiated group that reaches wherever the world requires them to be - any country devastated by natural or any other reason that needs to be built again. "Just like they need education and business to start from the scratch, they also need homes and buildings to work in. And I feel happy to lend a helping hand," she says. The stunning 24-year-old Dark of the Moon star, officially the hottest woman on Earth that she was told to shed her 'baby fat' to be a success. Track: The 8th Note vs Willian Clark feat Sarona Tiram & Sapir Asy - To Be (Ricky Ryan & Vipul Remix).
This track remixed by Indian artist called Vipul Angrish is a soulful track I have heard so far. The track has been put together beautifully keeping everything in mind. Generally people end up spoiling the track by remixing, but this in addition to retaining the value adds a little more by brining the elements in harmony. Listen to the track when you want to sway away to peace. A must check out. (As told to Jasmine Singh) |

Kennel Club has launched an online dating site for dogs. The website has been launched to ensure pedigree puppies are healthy and free from genetic problems. Mate Select is the brainchild of the club - whose primary objective is ‘to promote in every way, the general improvement of dogs’and will connect pedigree dog breeders. It aims to put an end to genetic problems caused by some breeders mating dogs who are too closely related, or 'inbred'. The club is hoping that the website will make such problems less likely. "Mate Select is intended to help breeders and puppy buyers to safeguard the future health of pedigree dogs," the Sky News quoted Kennel Club spokesperson as saying. "It basically enables breeders to perform hypothetical matings online and see what impact a mating will have on the genetic diversity (ie the long term health and viability) of the breed that they love. "It will enable breeders to begin to assess the impact that a proposed mating between Kennel Club registered dogs will have on the genetic diversity of a breed. The service is intended to safeguard the future of pedigree breeds," the spokesperson added. Puppy buyers are also being taken into consideration. "It also enables puppy buyers to find out health test results for the parents of potential puppies that they buy," the spokeswoman said. "This will help to stop people falling into the hands of backstreet dealers, as the results of every single dog registered with the Kennel Club are on this site,” she added. —ANI |
Legend, lure...legacy!
Legend goes that Pandavas spent the last year of their vanvas (exile) here. Today, this place, not far from Chandigarh, has an open air museum. Bhima Devi Temple Complex, adjacent to Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, indeed offers a journey back in time. Beautifully carved stones, ornate pillars, gods, goddesses, gandharavas and apsaras...this vast open space has some of the beautiful sculptures that are said to be from the 8th century to the 12th century AD. One can’t help but marvel at the designs rendered on stones. The vibrations of the area are so rich, that a walk around transports you to the very time when Pandavas roamed around on this very land. Not far from here is a baoli (natural water source) that is supposed to have water more pure than what comes from the aqua-guard at home, according to the locals. Some other few ponds, with small fish and water snakes, this area has lots of places that, according to locals, have a divine touch.
Bhima Devi Museum has a neatly labelled collection of relics from the past. Sun God, door jambs, miniature jalis, Ganesha in different positions, Nandi, elephants, a scene from a marriage ceremony, it’s as if time has stopped. These not so ordinary stones are the evidence of our rich past. Next to this archeologically significant site is the famous Yadavindra Gardens. In the foothills of Shivaliks lies this beautiful garden, as if another page out of 17th century history! Said to be built by Mughuls, Fidai Khan Aurangzeb’s architect and foster brother, there are the Rang Mahal, Shish Mahal and Jal Mahal - palaces built in the terraced gardens. Tall trees on the sides, well manicured lawns — the seven terraces that start with the highest one takes you through steps to an open disk-like theatre. Work is in progress to beautify the fountains, so not all of are them functional now but one can enjoy a walk among fruit-laden trees. If you happen to be there during the day, you can see innumerable bats fluttering from tall trees becoming one with the leaves. Palm trees, cypresses, mango and dense groves of trees among the graceful arched balconies, descending terraces next to the purple-green Himalayas create a magical effect. There is a toy train and camel rides for kids. Oasis, another restaurant by tourism department, and numerous chaat, ice-cream and snack corners surround the garden. Haryana tourism’s Motel Buderigar with an attached restaurant is also at the gardens. Taste royalty by staying in one of the Maharaja suites overlooking the gardens. Around 20 kms from Chandigarh, it takes as many minutes to reach the garden if one is not caught in the traffic jam. Though one can go, check out the place within hours, we recommend a night stay to savour the beauties of the place - an early morning walk amongst the ruins, a day spent in royal suite followed by a late evening walk in the garden! mona@tribunemail.com |
A short message
‘Talking through children’ is what Shikha Sharma, 23-year-old upcoming documentary-maker, wanted to picturise. And her sincere effort is reflected in the 10-minute film Metamorphosis, which she has made for her graduation. This film, themed around compassion for animals, also won Shikha Silver Filmi Chashma Award of Rs 50,000. Born and brought up in Chandigarh, Shikha, Vivek High alumni, is now freelancing in movie-making after graduating from Symbiosis International University. "It’s the school that prepared me for a career that is different than regular medical-engineering fields. A film appreciation course by PK Nayyar in Pune helped me find my calling,” says Shikha, who is in Chandigarh to spend some time with her family. Exposure to European and world cinema made Shikha realise how interesting films can be. “I am most touched by children’s observation of life and their incessant questions,”says Shikha. Metamorphosis has 11-year-old Mihir Joshi as the protagonist. His four-and-half year old brother Arnav Joshi and Shivani Karadkar, who plays the mother, are the other actors. Shot in Pune, this short film conveys a very powerful message through children and their take on life. “Film-making is an unconventional field; it’s not easy putting an idea across. Lots of technicalities are involved,”says Shikha, who has written and directed the movie. She is also thankful to her family, primarily that of teachers, who let her explore her dreams. “I am happy that my family trusts my vision and are all supportive,”says this girl who wants to work more on children cinema. “Sometimes children can be the best teachers for they are unspoilt, uncorrupted by the ways of the world,”she shares. |
Shekhar Kapur, the ace director of acclaimed films such as Elizabeth and Bandit Queen remembers the writer Bandit Queen, Mala Sen who died on Monday because of cancer. Mala Sen was 64 at the time of death and was being treated at Tata Memorial Hospital. Shekhar says, "Bandit Queen would have never made without Mala Sen because the whole film was her interpretation. As I was never allowed to meet Phoolan Devi because she was in jail so it was Mala who used to meet her. She spent years trying to understand Phoolan's heart, soul and mind. The two women bonded so well that Mala understood the depth and pain of Phoolan." It was Mala who crafted the world of Phoolan. Shekhar explains, "What I made in the film was completely according to Mala's interpretation because she saw the woman. There was so much to take from Mala's interpretation. She and Phoolan understood that India is a male-dominated country and they could empathise with each other. So, I knew Phoolan because of Mala and without her I couldn't have made the film." Bandit Queen was one of the best and most controversial projects by Shekhar Kapur which was released in 1994. The film was critically acclaimed and won many national and international awards. This was a film which Shekhar made without any commercial purpose as he just wanted to make a film based on the life of Phoolan Devi who was killed in 2001. |
Choreography took a back seat in his life long ago but actor Arshad Warsi wants to return to his first love with a film on dance. Before entering Bollywood, Arshad worked as a choreographer for stage shows. He also ran a dance school and won an English Jazz Dancing Competition when he was 21. "I have given such a fabulous idea on a dance film to someone. Since I have been a dancer, I know what a dancer is all about. Somebody is working on it. I have just given an idea, a writer is doing the job now," Arshad said. "If the movie has only dance then it becomes boring, there has to be something more than dance. That's why I haven't done any film on dance as most of the scripts are on same lines. It's just the same, like a small-time guy works hard, becomes a dancer and wins a competition. So it has to be something more than this," Arshad said. The 43-year-old actor says he won't direct the film. Arshad's first film as a producer, Hum Tum Aur Ghost, failed to create magic at the box office last year. "Choreography has now taken a backseat. I have realised that the only way for me to do choreography, is to do it for films," Arshad said. |
SRK’s foreword for Anupama Chopra Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has penned the foreword for well-known film critic and author Anupama Chopras new book First Day First Show. She feels only SRK could do justice because he has had an exemplary journey in the industry. "I asked him to write the foreword because he is somebody whose career I have followed very closely and who in a sense to me is one who actually exemplified the journey. The three Khans have really spearheaded Bollywood. So for me he was the best person to encapsulate how much things have changed,"he says. Giving a sneak preview of the book, Chopra says, "Its the collection of the work that I have done. The idea was to put the articles together so that it shows how much Bollywood has evolved in the last 20 years. It sort of becomes the history of modern Bollywood. It's to see where we were in 1993 and now it seems like another world." Chopra, who won national award in 2001 for the best book on cinema for Sholay: The Making of a Classic,” says revisiting her work was a nostalgic experience. Mesmerized by Shah Rukh's success, Chopra had written his biography "King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the seductive world of Indian cinema". "It was amazing to go back and revisit the articles you have done 15 or 16 years ago. There was a profile I did of Shah Rukh in 1992 and 1995 when he was shooting for Aziz Mirzas Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Ram Jaane. But it was great fun," says the 48-year-old journalist. |

There is nothing more feminine, versatile or sexier than a skirt. It can be worn long, short or just right and it almost always looks fabulous and guarantees attention. We take a look at Bollywood beauties flaunting their shapely legs in skirts. Priyanka Chopra: We completely heart her hair and make-up; she looks fabulously stunning! The knotted white blouse is elegant and the golden embellished skirt is glamourous and classy! Thumbs-up for the true star! Neha Dhupia: She channels the sexy secretary look perfectly. The nude pumps are delicious, the shirt hugs her torso well while the sequins add a glamourous edge to her outfit, and the skirt shows off her legs. The poker-straight hair completes her formal avatar. What's not to like? Rani Mukerji: How lovely does she look! The lacey top is elegant and charming and the pearls are a matching touch. The tight skirt is slimming and black pumps complete her look. This look is formal, elegant and charming. Shraddha Kapoor: The short textured black skirt shows off her long legs to perfection. She looks pretty and the silver necklace jazzes up her outfit but we wish she had worn simple black pumps instead of high-heeled lace-ups. Katrina Kaif: She looks gorgeous, as always. But the light green blouse doesn't gel with the pleated skirt which shows off her lovely legs. The matching flats are too tacky and would look best with jeans. This semi-formal look doesn't work for Katrina. Shilpa Shetty: She looks great but there are too many distracting frills on her outfit. She should have kept either the skirt or the top plain. We like the snake-print peep-toes, though. —HRM |

Aishwarya Sakhuja popularly known as Toasty from Saas Bina Sasuraal on Sony is playing the perfect bahu onscreen and has found her perfect man in Tej (Ravi Dubey). However in real life Aishwarya is still on a lookout for her ideal man. Read on as the pretty actress discuses dating, love and romance. What is your idea of the perfect romance? My idea of an ideal romance does not necessarily involve flowers and chocolates. If my man is caring enough to pick me up from the sets of my show without having to ask him, that is what I call romantic. Which qualities define your ideal man? Does an ideal man even exist? (laughs). Honestly, he should be understanding and should accept me with my flaws. He should not expect me to change myself in anyway. It will be great if I find that kind of compatibility. How would you want him to woo you? He should not play the tricks. I don't like men beating around the bush. He should be straightforward if he likes me and tell me on my face that he is interested in me. Not just that he should do something about it and make me feel special. How would the perfect date be? My perfect date will involve a dinner and movie. I am a big foodie and he should take me to a fancy eating place. I am also a movie buff and will watch even an old film as long as it is good. So it does not really matter whether he takes me for the colour version of Mughal-e-Azam or the latest release, Pirates of the Caribbean. Which is your favourite love story and why? My mom and dad's love story is my favourite. I have seen them face hardships as well as having a good time together. Theirs makes the perfect love story. Which romantic movie has touched your heart? It has to be Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. I loved the way Aamir Khan wooed Juhi Chawla in that movie. They made the cutest onscreen pair. Who was your first crush? Defiantly Aamir Khan. I remember writing so many letters to him but unfortunately he never replied. However, that did not deter me as I kept writing romantic letters to him. Which is the most memorable mushy scene from your show Saas Bina Sasuraal? There are lots of scenes to choose from but one that I recall right now is the scene where I reveal to Tej about how I fell in love with him. I remind him that he used to come to meet me with broken shirt buttons and keep calling him tuta button wala ladka (laughs). |
