The chocolate factory!
Chocolate has found its way into spas, restaurant kitchens and is now set to rock your wardrobes as well
Ashima Sehajpal

brownie point:A model displays the chocolate creation

One century, 63 years, 5 months and 21 days after the first chocolate bar was created by a certain Joseph Fry and Son, the sinfully sweet dessert has taken a surprising form of a designer costume!

Designed by Damanpreet Kaur, a student of IIFT, Mohali, the creation has melted chocolate spread uniformly on a sheer fabric to make an off-shoulder dress out of it. This chocolate experiment also invariably takes us three years back in time when Kareena Kapoor endorsed the limited edition of a chocolate bathing soap. She featured in layers of chocolate draped around her in the shape of a tube top!

The brown dessert has more dimensions to it that extend beyond the chocolate cubes wrapped in a golden foil paper. It's more than being about syrup used as topping of the Vanilla ice cream or flavours of chocolate shakes and ice-creams. For Damanpreet, it's an overtly interesting subject. "Everybody loves chocolates. So, why not express the love by wearing it. It might not be a very practical creation, but it for sure has earned maximum attention."

There's time before chocolate finds space in our wardrobe but as of now it's a hit in the beauty industry. Used extensively for spas, chocolate beauty treatments and therapy enjoys the maximum demand in the industry. Confirms Richa Aggarwal, Director, Cleopatra, "Eighty per cent of the people who visit us demand only the chocolate spa. They know that chocolate is a mood elevator and that would help them relax."

Also known for its aphrodisiac properties, the spas are recommended by the beauty experts also for its anti-tan quality. "Chocolate spas are the best bridal spas; it detoxifies and rejuvenates the skin. Its hydrating properties keep the skin glowing," adds Richa. For the same reasons, choco-soaps are a rage at Fab India. These easily outdo the sales of other such toilet accessories.

While experiments with chocolates continue in the beauty industry, it's also being used extensively in the food industry to invent new dishes. At the recently opened Chocolate Room in Sector 9, not only a variety of pastries and moose are available in the chocolate flavour, you are spoilt for choice even in case of chocolate pizzas. So, there's a hot chocolate chilli pizza, hot chocolate mushroom pizza, vegetable pizza! "The response in the very third week is overwhelming. We thought that it would be quite a risk to mix chocolate with the Italian cuisine, but, surprisingly, people were game for it," says Pavittra Bajwa, owner. And on the cards is an experiment with Mexican cuisine and chocolate. In addition to over a dozen chocolate shakes, the menu offers the new concept of chocolate shots, inspired by the famous tequila shots. "The shots are available in seven different flavours, with the primary base of chocolates."

Vipul Dua, who introduced the dish at his oriental restaurant, Purple Rice, knew that chocolates would make people experiment with the dish, "And it actually happened. People used to check the menu and get stuck on the chocolate spring rolls. This is still the most preferred dish in desserts. Second in demand are chocolate spring rolls, which are served in martini glasses."

Even as the dark brown chocolate continues to amaze in different forms, the original cubed chocolate remains our first love…after all, who minds 'kuch meetha' after dinner! ashima@tribunemail.com

SPA-rkling show
Aamir Ali visited Chandigarh to inaugurate a luxury spa
Vasudha Gupta

"Happiness is the most important thing in life. That's why I enjoy going to spas. It's the one place where you can relax and be happy," laughs Aamir Ali. Known more for his roles on television, Aamir Ali was in Chandigarh to launch the Cleopatra Luxury Spa in hotel Bella Vista, Panchkula, on Saturday."As an actor we are keeping up with the time schedules and working 12 hours a day. At times, I want to forget about the stress and relax. That's where spas work wonders," he says.

Talking about his acting career, Aamir spoke extensively about his love for television and his new-found affection for the big screen. His role in the movie I hate luv stories was something that he experimented with. "Dharma Productions is a big brand. I was just plain lucky to bag the role. Everyone in the cast was below 29 years of age. This made it fun," he says. Dressed in a casual shirt and jeans, he spoke about his latest stint in television-comedy. "There was a time in television, when serials running for 6-7 years worked. Now, people are impatient and discard the age-old sagas," he says.

For Aamir, it is important to move out of the comfort zone and experiment with different roles. That explained his latest move a fun-loving character in FIR. "The director of FIR has been working on the show since the past four years and is an intelligent guy. He knows how to bring his character out on the screen. This makes it comfortable to work with him," he shares. Not only woman-oriented serials, or comedy, the actor has aced reality serials as well. For him, Nach Baliye was a great platform and helped him connect with the audience base in a better way. "Actors need to go out of the set moulds which have been created for them. Unfortunately, when it comes to television actors, as soon as serials end, the character dies from the minds of the public. Very few have the chance to explore various roles and make an impact outside the set mould. That is the point where the actor breaks the cliché and stands out of the crowd of actors," he says.

Aamir is busy focusing on his FIR and remains tight-lipped about his upcoming ventures. Apprehensive about theatre, he feels he is impatient to tackle the patient process of mastering theatre!

With the popularity of small budget films and their contribution in taking Indian cinema to another level, we ask the actor will he be keen on the same. "I have made several mistakes and worked with producers who do not really make efforts. So many times producers have money, but movies never launch. This is where the credibility of production houses steps ahead," he says.

Shares Richa Aggarwal, proprietor, Cleopatra Spa, "These days, men are more concerned about looks. We have a huge client base of men who are regulars at our spa.” Associated with the International Spa Association, Richa has brought the concept of a luxury spa to Chandigarh.

Fondly called coupes, these lean, mean, sleek two-door convertibles spell luxury in the true sense of the word
Vasudha Gupta

Good things come in small packages: the phrase holds true not only for the brown paper packages tied up with strings, but also for these lean, mean convertible machines. Fondly called coupes, they spell luxury in the true sense of the word. These sleek two-door drives are acquired not only for the brand value but also evoke a sense of jealousy among peers and friends.

Akhil Jain with his BMW Z4 Photo: Vinay malik

An owner of a SLK200, Amit Kothari shares his views on his favourite four-wheeler. "Owning a luxury sports car was a cherished dream. It was only after the availability became a little easier that I decided to get one. They are easy to flaunt and gather the right kind of attention," he quips. "We also have a club with around 10 active members who own convertibles and coupes around the town. We regularly go for drives and share information on how to take care of our cars," he shares.

"The club is called Tyre Burners," says Vishal Malhotra, Director, Passion Drives. "I own a dealership of used luxury cars and came up with the concept of the club. Today, the club is three months old and our base is growing," he adds. Talking about what makes sports cars exclusive, he says, "Punjab and Chandigarh have several luxury cars, they are now common and don't spell élan. The true followers of exclusivity buy sports cars and adore them. The club has owners flaunting BMWs, Mercedes, Audis and also a Bentley.

Leave aside Ludhiana; even Chandigarh has such a club. Akhil Jain, all of 23, got his BMW Z4 when he found the other luxury cars conventional. "Mercedes is known for its plain interiors. I wanted something with a little bit more definition, and chose this piece of luxurious metal," says Akhil. Member of Elite Rides, Akhil spoke about the list of dignitaries that make it to the club. "It's only if your car is above Rs 40 lakh that you can try to be a member. We will soon change the policy to ensure that it retains the air of distinctiveness," he shares.

Sachin is not one of those who gifted his wife, Reena, a precious diamond necklace. Instead, he registered the praise he had heard from his wife about the Beamer and gift wrapped it for her. "It was the best present any wife can expect to have. I was not even remotely expecting it two years back. Today, I am a proud owner of a hard-top convertible and love to flaunt it at my kitties," she gushes.

Sachin shares his side of the story, "It is the only car with the number of the model on the number plate. Most of the other luxury cars tend to gel with the mature crown. BMW tends to retain its boyish charm and is definitely a killer. More than my wife and me, my six-year-old son loves it," he smiles.

Rahul Gupta bought his hard-top convertible BMW primarily for the attention it draws. "Hard-top convertibles tend be easier to maintain than the soft-tops. People don't mind ruining the car out of jealousy here. So it's always better to protect it and your self when it comes to off-beat cars," he says. So, if you think you can handle the excessive attention, these adorable automobiles might just be what you need. 7

All set for Toronto

Bollywood’s famous Deols - veteran actor Dharmendra and his sons Sunny and Bobby - are set to enthrall fans in Toronto with their signature dance steps at the 12th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards to be held next month. Actress Priyanka Chopra will add glamour to the event.

“Dad is celebrating his 50 years in the industry. It’s a great moment for all of us. So we are going to be all together and looking forward to it,” actor Bobby Deol said.

Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby, who were recently seen together in comedy film Yamla Pagla Deewana will perform to peppy songs from the movie, as well as on some of Dharmendra’s classic numbers.

“We will of course perform on Yamla Pagla Deewana songs. We would also choose some songs from dad’s films on which we can perform,” said Bobby.

Even at 75, the evergreen Dharmendra is quite excited to take to the stage to celebrate five decades of his contribution to the film industry.

“I am loving it. Wherever we go we are going to enjoy because we all love you and you all love us. That’s the beauty,” said Dharmendra.

The three-day IIFA weekend is to be held June 23-25.

According to Bobby, IIFA is different from other awards because it takes Bollywood beyond Indian shores and popularises its song and dance culture in different countries every year.

“IIFA is different because it reaches to different parts of the world. India becomes the talk of the town in those countries. They get to know more about Indian culture and it’s a great way of spreading across to the world, what Indians are all about,” he said.

Actress Priyanka Chopra said she has not yet decided the numbers she would be performing to at the IIFA event, but she hopes to do something unique.

“This is too early to decide what to perform in IIFA as it still has a month to go. I have performed in almost every award functions this year, so would like to do something different in IIFA,” said Priyanka.

Though she will not be performing with the Deols, the 28-year-old said she was looking forward to being with them as she shares a special bonding with the family.

“I am very excited. My relationship with the Deol family is very special because the hero of my first film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy was Sunny Deol,” she added. — IANS

Hangover magic continues

Director Todd Philips would be interested in a finale of The Hangover with a third part in the series. He says, “The third would be the finale and an ending. The most I could say about it, and I haven't discussed it with these actors — is that it is not following that template but very much a new idea.”

He adds, “As far as where it takes place, I'm very much open. I don’t mind being flown around the world with wine and women and then I will make my decision.”

With market analysts expecting Hangover Part II to make a tonne of cash when it opens on May 26, Phillips may just get his chance to turn his series into a trilogy. —HRM

Gambling instinct: Neha Dhupia

Neha Dhupia calls herself a gypsy. She loves travelling and every year she chooses a new destination. Neha works round the year and takes some time off for herself in the summer. Neha has finished shooting for Dear Friend Hitler. She talks about her recent vacation to Macau.

Macau: I love the city. It's so beautiful and it's a gambler's paradise. One week is less for you to visit the place. The more you see it, the more you want to know about it. The beautiful structures, the lanes, I just love it all.

Gambler: As I said it's a gambler's paradise but I am not so lucky in gambling and have lost many times. But thankfully I didn't put much money. The place also has grand resorts that offer every possible luxury you can imagine.

Highlight: I love the shows which are held for tourists. I will say it's a perfect place for tourists because they make so many options available to us. I went for The House of Dancing Water, a spectacular extravaganza, the world's largest water-based show created by Franco Dragone.

Food for thought: Yes, when you reach a place the first thing you want to do is eat local food. I love the food in Macau. You should try the very famous Portuguese Egg Tarts. They are simply mouth-watering. It is basically a pastry crust that is filled with egg custard, which is then baked and served.

Another slice of Pi

He has taken a big leap, straight into Hollywood. Ayush Tandon,12, stars as the child version of protagonist Pi Patel in director Ang Lee's new film even as another Indian boy plays his teenaged avatar.

The Mumbai boy has wrapped up his part for the 3D Hollywood movie, Life of Pi. He shot in places like Taiwan and Pondicherry (now Puducherry).

"People are very professional out there. They are always in time and they smoothly finish everything in the stipulated time. It was so wonderful to work with them," Ayush, who starred in Bollywood's 7 Khoon Maaf, said.

"It's a fantastic feeling that I have done a Hollywood film. My part of the shoot is complete," added the 12-year-old.

Lee, a Golden Globe and Oscar winning Taiwanese American film director, got international acclaim with movies like Sense and Sensibility, Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

"Lee was looking for the right child artiste for the role. He had visited many schools and auditioned. My audition was approved by the US (team). I was called for a look test in Taiwan and they selected me there," said Ayush, a student of Mumbai's St. Augustine's School.

He got special leave from his school to shoot for the movie, based on Yann Martel's Booker-winning novel of the same name.

"My school gave me permission and leave to go and shoot for the film as it is such a big project. I did 7 Khoon Maaf during vacations," said Ayush who would go to Class 8 this year.

Ayush is not permitted to speak about the film, but giving an inkling about his character, he said: "It's an Indian character who lives in Pondicherry.

"(In the film) My father has a zoo in Canada and we are shifting there in a ship and the ship sinks, but Pi escapes in a lifeboat. I am not there in the ship part. It's done by the older Pi. The story is all about his journey." Delhi-based 17-year-old Suraj Sharma will play the teenaged Pi in the film.

Even at this tender age, Ayush has an impressive body of work. He is the winner of Zee TV's dance reality show Chota Packet Bada Dhamaka and he has also done Sony's Comedy Ka Daily Soap. —IANS

Fun with fusion food
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Beat the heat

There are many ways to take the hot with the cool in an Indian summer. For starters: go green.Appropriate architectural design and home decor go a long way in keeping the heat away, thus decreasing your dependence on air conditioners and also the electricity bills.

"Strategies mainly include architectural and landscaping tricks such as green roofing, green terraces, and planting more trees in the surrounding area of the house. The idea is to minimize sources of heat and remove built-up heat from inside," Anumita Roychowdhury, head of the green buildings team at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), said.

"Simple steps such as installing white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect the heat away from the house is a part of keeping cool and saving energy," she adds.

Watch what you eat: Some simple dietary changes can also help in keeping the heat away, experts say. Green tea or a spoon of onion juice can be powerful anti-oxidants for the skin. —IANS
