IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Not far from Chandigarh is this place where silence prevails. One can only hear the sound of the wind, rustle of the leaves, occasional clinking of temple bells interspersed with the cries of the peacock — the temple of Jayanti Devi, some nine kilometres from PGI, offers an astounding view of surrounding fields, villages and small rainwater dams. The story behind the temple of benevolent goddess Jayanti is quite fascinating. It dates back to around 500 years. At that time, a small estate called Hathnaur was in north of the present day Chandigarh under the Mughals. When a princess from Kangra was to be married in this estate, she got very anxious. It meant going far away from deity of her clan Jayanti Devi. As legend goes, she prayed hard and goddess Jayanti, moved by the deep devotion of the girl, appeared in her dreams and promised to accompany her wherever she went. The idol of goddess came along with the doli of the princess after wedding. The king of Hathnaur established a temple for the Devi on a hillock in his estate. This benevolent goddess has a large following, and every year a fair is arranged in mid-February. The bumpy road to Jayanti Devi offers an interesting insight into 'urban-rural' society. A right turn from Mullanpur barrier makes one cross village Shingariwalla, which has huge mansions. What's interesting is these palatial houses have tractors parked inside and rows of buffaloes! A mitti hillock on one side and stairs on the other leads one to Jayanti Devi temple. One can buy 'prasad' from the shops lined along the stairs. The temple, on the top of the hillock, offers a breathtaking view. One can hear and even spot peacocks amongst the hills. One can also take the road down from the temple to the Jayanti Dam, which collects rainwater used to irrigate fields. The bank of this dam has its own share of visitors--- mainly love birds. An excellent spot for a picnic indeed. We recommend: wear your sports shoes and choose either early morning or late evening for the excursion. Be careful when you park your car, the road is narrow. And, yes, have at least two to three hours at hand if you want to spend some time soaking in the bounties of nature! mona@tribunemail.com |
Experiments by University of South Florida psychologists suggest that manhood was difficult to earn and easy to lose, and also showed that aggression was the preferred way for men to hold onto this precarious status. "Gender is social. Men know this. They are powerfully concerned about how they appear in other people's eyes," said Jennifer K Bosson. "And the more concerned they are, the more they will suffer psychologically when their manhood feels violated. Gender role violation can be a big thing, like losing a job, or a little thing, like being asked to braid hair in a laboratory," she added. In several experiments, Bosson and her colleagues used the hair-braiding task to force men to behave in a 'feminine' manner, and recorded what happened. In one experiment, some men braided hair; others did the more masculine-or gender-neutral-task of braiding rope. Given the options afterwards of punching a bag or doing a puzzle, the hair-braiders overwhelmingly chose the former. When one group of men braided hair and others did not, and all punched the bag, the hair-braiders punched harder. When they all braided hair and only some got to punch, the non-punchers evinced more anxiety on a subsequent test. Aggression is a 'manhood-restoring tactic', concludes the researchers. Interestingly, Bosson also found that people tend to feel manhood is defined by achievements, not biology, whereas womanhood is seen primarily as a biological state. Thus, manhood can be 'lost' through social transgressions, whereas womanhood is 'lost' only by physical changes, such as menopause. She said the main punishers of gender role 'violations' are other men. If Bosson is correct, the findings add weight to the notion that gender is a social, not a biological, phenomenon. — ANI. |
A new study has found that one in three women look after the household finances as they don't believe their other half can keep up with paying the bills. It said women are so doubtful of their husbands' abilities with money, that only one in five is willing to take financial advice from them. However, their men folk are not the only ones women don't trust. Some 90 per cent of those surveyed wouldn't rely on their bank to help them out of financial trouble either. And 87 per cent don't believe their local politician would be any use. Instead of turning to others, women are much more likely to try to solve their own financial problems. Almost a third said they prefer to use financial websites to get the advice they seek - and only 2 per cent believe a bank would provide help. The study was conducted by Good Housekeeping magazine. — ANI |

First-day-first-show Vikram Bhatt’s latest experiment, Haunted 3D, is a crowd-puller. While the show is running housefull, people seem fascinated with the concept of 3D. While some fell in love with the songs, a few thought that the concept of a horror love story was interesting. Starring Tia Bajpai, Mimoh Chakraborty and Mahaakshay Chakraborty, the movie has received mixed reviews. First ‘horror’ flick
The movie was interesting. Not only was the 3D effect gripping, the love story gave a different feel to the plot. The horror theme has really worked.
—Ressica Ahuja, Student of Carmel Convent Over-hyped
The movie was over-hyped and did not require certain images to be projected the way they were. At certain places, the 3D effect totally failed. The movie was scattered with grotesque screen shots. — Qudrat Paul,

In AUTO mode
It's love at first sight. And we did see many a boy go weak in the knees after a mere glimpse. No wonder, we even overheard somebody saying, "I was waiting for this moment and now when it's in front of me, I'll make sure I take it home as soon as possible." The beauty in question: the Honda CBR bike, which was the cynosure of all eyes at the ongoing Auto Mall in Chandigarh. Before its launch on Friday, the person concerned informed us, "The demand for the bike is so much that one has to wait for at least two months to take it home, which is justified considering the fact that the Honda CBR is the first 250 cc engine bike in India. Adding more to its statistics, the Rs 1,68,000 bike is equipped with six gears and has a maximum speed of 200 miles per hour. To our surprise, this wasn't enough of speed that a bike can promise. From the same house, two more bikes were on display, 1,000 cc and 12,00 cc, costing Rs 10 lakh and Rs 17,87,000, respectively, which offers the thrill of driving at a speed of 250 and 300 miles per hour. But luxury often costs more than usual! The same goes for the luxury segment cars at the exhibition as well. The beige interiors of Suzuki's luxury machine, Kizashi, explains why it cost over 17 lakh. The car has ample security features, the count of which go beyond the seat belts. It is equipped with three types of airbags, lane change indicators and much more. Tata's Aria is a SUV that pledges the finesse of a sedan. The eight-seater has the latest feature of climate control, GPS navigation system, rain-sensing auto-wipers. However, the high point of the SUV is its reverse guide camera. It created quite a buzz at its launch last year for being India's first hybrid car. Prius by Toyata, which promises to be the car of the next generation for its eco-friendly features, runs on electric motor besides petrol. Costing over 27 lakh, the car, however, has failed to find enough buyers. "We are expecting the sales to rise in the next few years. An eco-friendly car can't be ignored for long," says Lukesh, dealer of Pioneer Toyota. ashima@tribunemail.com |

Kalki’s Shanghai experience
Lady luck is smiling on Kalki Koechlin. After giving a powerful performance in Dev D, the actress has now grabbed another good role in Dibakar Bannerjee’s political thriller Shanghai.
Produced by PVR Pictures, the movie is the official Hindi adaptation of Greek novelist Vassilis Vassilikos’ political thriller Z, about the real-life assassination of a dynamic politician. The movie has been adapted by Bannerjee and his team to the Indian context and the director says Kalki’s role will not be what audiences expect of her. "Everyone remembers Kalki’s Dev D image. But this time around she is going to be very different. In the film, she is a very, very intense and a very, very angry girl who has just come down from her university in America," Bannerjee said in a statement. "She is here because of some reason. She is also a woman with a past who is trying to come to terms with her life in this small town where she is not supposed to be at all," he added. Kalki, who recently tied the knot with Anurag Kashyap and will be seen in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Shaitan, will be seen opposite Emraan Hashmi. "She hates Emraan’s character for trying to rope her - a foreign national — into some kind of a sleazy deal in this small town. It’s almost as if they are from two different planets and when that happens anything can happen," said Bannerjee. The Shanghai cast also includes Abhay Deol, Farooq Sheikh in a negative role and Bengali movies star Prasenjit.

Veggie surprise!
Veggies gear up; a food festival that celebrates ‘ahimsa food’ kicks off this Friday! The 10-day festival has an apt name too - ‘Googly Food Festival’. A googly in the true sense, the festival will have all kinds of vegetarian delights but with a non-vegetarian taste! And well, they will look like non-vegetarian dishes too! Confused? Don’t be. Chef Ashish Bali throws more light, “It’s a pure vegetarian food festival where soya is the base of all dishes. We have not even used egg in any of our food preparations. The food is pure vegetarian, but the taste and the look is just like a non-vegetarian dish.” Sounds as pleasing as it tastes! And now let’s talk about the dishes they have to offer. From starters to soups to main course and desserts, the food festival also includes salads, live counters, continental, Indian and Oriental dishes. For the starters, you can try their Masala fillet with Sechuan sauce or Tandoori nuggets with Garlic mayonnaise jalapeno balls. If you enjoy soups then there is roasted pumpkin and garlic soup with pepper ham (mind you the ham is made from soya). In salads, there is a variety to choose from - a healthy sprout chat, monk fish salad, Cantonese cucumber, cold meat platter and more. For the main course, if you want to try Indian then take your pick from seekh kebab masala, classic bites begum bahar, veg prawn malai curry (you have to eat it to believe it because the prawns are made from humble soya champs) or shami kebab biryani. From the Oriental, try veg fillet in hot garlic sauce, stir fried garden greens with masala sausages in brunt chilli flavour, Singapore noodles in masala fillet or chilli pepper ham in black pepper sauce. For the Continental delights pick from grill mock chicken in barbeque sauce, caponata with classic bites or tandoori ham with rosemerry potato. To savour the sweet tooth there is Malpua with rabri, lords cham cham, fruit custard (sugar free), baked yoghurt, apple straddle etc. Though the idea behind this festival is to promote vegetarian food the lunch buffet is priced at Rs 495 plus taxes and dinner is priced at Rs 545. Do you suspect that your partner is unfaithful? Don’t worry - here’s a new gadget that is designed to recover information that has been wiped from an Apple iPhone. Manufactured by Paraben, the USB stick - called the iRecovery Stick - can also retrieve deleted contact details and even mapping solutions, which show the destinations that the phone user has visited. Unsurprisingly, it’s proving very popular with those who suspect their other half has something to hide. “This gadget is good for everyone from suspicious wives and husbands to girlfriends and boyfriends,” Ray Couch, spokesman for the manufacturer said. “It’s also aimed at the employer who suspects foul play from a member of staff and even the police,” he said. The USB stick gadget works by connecting to a computer, which is, in turn, connected to the iPhone. Once the two devices are connected, the built-in software on the iRecovery Stick retrieves the deleted data on the phone. The gadget, which costs 199 pounds, has sparked the interest of detectives, who can use the technology to retrieve evidence that may have been deleted from a suspect’s phone. It can also be used in more mundane circumstances, such as retrieving data has been accidentally deleted, including songs on iTunes. — ANI |

Every person has a sense of style. Yet, there are only a few who'd attract a second glance or make heads turn. The magic could lie in tousled hair or it could lie in torn jeans! This week's face in the crowd Aanchal Bajwa, IT student, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, is the best possible amalgamation of varied style statements Your sense of style is…
Being a different person everyday. If you open my wardrobe you'd think it belongs to 20 different people. I simply love to experiment. I cannot stick to one style for a very long time, monotony bores me. Latest addition in your wardrobe…
Well, that will be a black jump suit from the French Connection. Brand freak or street junkie?
I simply love to shop till I drop--be it off the streets or from big designer stores. As long as it's worth being in my wardrobe I don't care where it's coming from. Choose a look; sporty, glamorous or chic
Even though I love to adapt all of them one day or the other, but my most favourate will be the chic. It's very smart and yet something you can carry out more often without having to wait for an occasion. My style icon would be…
Definitely Malaika Arora Khan. For her impeccable sense of style. She knows what to wear when and how to carry it off with so much of grace and elegance. So who's the worst dressed celebrity around?
Vidya Balan undoubtedly tops the list. She has never managed to get it right. Second would be Rakhi Sawant, but only if she is first considered a celebrity. One fashion trend you just don't understand…
Bollywood actors wearing extremely low neckline T-shirts. I just can't seem to understand why! Your take on accessories …
They definitely can do wonders if you use them right. They are capable of turning a very simple and dull look into a smart and classy one. But what we don't have to forget is to accessorise in moderation, never over do it. One thing that boosts your confidence

WEight watch Avoid blunders
Exercise and nutrition always go hand in hand. Most of the blunders in the world of fitness usually stem from lack of knowledge or misinformation provided by uncertified gym trainers. The thing that bothers me most about fitness blunders is that sometimes people continue with the workout sessions even if their body doesn't respond positively. Here are three common blunders and what you can do to correct them. Believing that going on a diet will get the results you seek: It's what most of the people think, though it is a dietary strategy popularised before 1980s. People would go on crash diets and lose weight - meaning muscle and fat. They assumed just eating less would take care of everything. Today, we know a certain number of calories is important, but so is the count of protein, carbohydrates and fats in the diet. A slight calorie deficit (less than maintenance) makes sense, which can be made possible by eating small meals and snacks every two to three hours. This helps to control blood sugar; and it is a fact that this will help you lose fat and have more energy throughout the day. Striving for 100 per cent perfection of nutrition programme all the time: It's great thing to do if you have a strict timeframe for fat loss, but to be honest, it's a disaster waiting to happen. If you love food, you need not starve yourself instead have modest amount of everything that your like. For instance, a client of mine just couldn't give up the chocolate-chip cookies she had twice-thrice a week. I reduced the number to two cookies. Not only did she did lose body fat with this realistic approach, she also enjoyed her treat. We need to make progress, but it needs to be built over a period of time. Performing countless abdominal crunches thinking it will get rid of the 'paunch' area on the lower tummy/abdominal area: I am just tired of clearing this myth. Spot reduction is not possible on any area of the body. The only answer is to reduce overall body fat through a slight caloric deficit, and add resistance exercise (weight training) to stimulate the metabolism and cardiovascular exercise to burn additional calories. Performing crunches will never reduce the abdominal area because they only serve to strengthen muscle, not flatten a specific area. Just as 200 bicep curls will not make the arm smaller, nor will 200 abdominal crunches make the waist smaller. You cannot spot reduce any part of the body. It's just not physiologically possible. A new study has found that teenage boys eat more food after playing a video game. The Canadian study involving 22 normal-weight teenagers found that the boys ate 163 more calories on the day they played video games and did not make up for this by burning more calories while gaming or eating less later in the day. The study tested if video-gaming itself affects eating habits, said lead author Jean- Philippe Chaput, of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, Canada. However, Chaput said the boys' self-ratings of hunger and levels of appetite hormones were not affected by playing video games. Instead there could be a subtle 'mental-stress effect', with eating food potentially satisfying the brain's need for a 'reward'. "Most of the food we want are sugary and fatty," he said. Chaput said although the extra 163 calories "sounds minor, if it is chronic, it could have a major effect over the years". The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. — ANI |
Shraddha does an ‘Aaou’dition' The lead character of LKTE pretty much carries the story of the film. So when it came to the casting, we needed someone who was not just a good looker and dancer, but also someone who could act well. Considering the fact that whoever would be signed on to be the first lead of Y-Films would get into a contract for three films, it was a big thing. Naturally, it turned out to be a most gruelling audition process spread over seven days, five intense scenes including a massive breakdown, three dances, and more. But eventually, what got Shraddha Kapoor the part was more than her talent to act. Ashish Patil, the producer of LKTE is a big fan of Shakti Kapoor and he asked her to do an ‘Aaou’ like her dad. Without a moment’s hesitation, Shraddha jumped and not only did that but also a “Crime-master go-go”, a “balmaaaaa”, a “Nandu sabka bandhu” and lots more. She basically captured the personality, the irreverence of the Y-Films brand and turned out to be someone with no inhibitions. |
After months of media speculation, it’s official now! Yash Raj Films is pleased to announce its next project. Directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra, the romantic-thriller Ek Tha Tiger, stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. Yash Chopra, speaking about the project, said it was a very happy moment for him. “Everyone knows my association with Salim saab, having worked together on Deewaar, Trishul and Kaala Patthar. It is a very happy moment for me and YRF to have his son Salman with us for the first time. Over the years, Salman has become a matured and talented actor and both he and the beautiful Katrina have a tremendous connect with their audiences. Combined with Kabir’s edgy directorial skills, we can all look forward to a thrilling film. I really loved the script which is based on a story written by Adi and I am sure that the whole team will do an excellent job on this project.” Salman Khan was also honoured to be working with YRF for the first time. He said, “In the past Adi and I have met a few times on various projects but somehow, when Kabir and he came to me with this particular story, we all just knew that this was the one. It is a very ambitious project and will be a challenge for all of us, but that’s exactly what makes it such a big draw. Above all this, I’m honoured to be working with Yashji, who has worked so closely with my Dad in the past.” The story is by Aditya Chopra and the screenplay and dialogues have been written by Kabir Khan and Neelesh Misra. Aseem Mishra, who has worked with Kabir on New York, will be the DOP. The music will be scored by Pritam. The film starts shooting early July and is slated for a mid-2012 release. |

Hollywood actress Courtney Cox was spotted attending a dinner party with her best friend Jennifer Aniston’s former husband Brad Pitt and seemed quite comfortable with him.

Bollywood actress-turned-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt says she was offered a place in the fifth season of sensational reality show Bigg Boss but she turned it down for its very concept. “Was just offered the next Bigg Boss. Living in a communal fish bowl out of choice is not quite my scene (sic),” Pooja posted on her Twitter page Friday. It is possible that Pooja took the decision following her brother Rahul’s stint on the show last year. Rahul, who came into the spotlight for his acquaintance with Pakistani-American terror convict David Coleman Headley, charged with scouting targets for the 26/11 Mumbai mayhem, raised quite a few eyebrows with his entry on the show. But he maintained a quiet demeanour, and mostly kept to himself. He was voted out in the fifth week of the show. Pooja, daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, made her Bollywood debut in 1991 with Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, after which she featured in many films including Sadak, Sir, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Chaahat and Zakhm. She made her directorial debut with Paap in 2004, and continued remaining behind the camera for films like Holiday, Dhokha and Kajraare. |

Aamir’s wish Aamir Khan is best buddies with Salman Khan? At a recent event he remarked on Salman’s bachelor status. We have heard that Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor throw tantrums aplenty on the sets of Mausam. Sonam behaves like a delicate darling and diva, who needs somebody to cater to her every whim while Shahid arrives late on the sets of his father’s film. Moreover, they make fun of the back-up dancers. In fact, Sonam is unrecognisable without make-up on the sets. She does not resemble a Kashmiri girl (her character) at all. Song - Grenade Artist - Bruno Mars Genre - pop Why - I like this song because of its lyrics. They are the prominent feature of the song. It has some really simple yet thought provoking lyrics that strike a chord and keep resonating even long after you've finished listening to the song. It has really good music too.
