Chhatbir Zoo to get leopard cats from Gangtok

Chhat (Banur), May 1
Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park will soon get a pair of red panda and leopard cats from Gangtok.This was stated today in a press release issued by the zoo director Basanta Raj Kumar.

He said a team of forest department officials, led by Punjab Forest and Wildlife Minister Tikshan Sud, today visited Gangtok Zoo.

Authorities in Gangtok Zoo agreed to give animals for display at Chhatbir Zoo. Leopard cats, an endangered animal, are rare animals of Himalayas, which could be reared in Chhatbir Zoo.

It is a schedule-I, Appendix-I species in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which underscores the need for its conservation.

The director said the Gangtok zoo was in a position to spare a pair of red pandas, which are subject to necessary approval by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).

Woman succumbs toburn injuries

The woman suffering from burn injuries, following a dispute with neighbours at Daun village, succumbed to injuries at the PGI, Chandigarh, this morning.Earlier, the police had registered a case of attempt to murder against eight persons, including the victim’s neighbour and a panchayat member.

Now, suspected persons have been booked for murder. The victim, Surinder Kaur (58), had received 50 per cent burn injuries after some village folks allegedly beat her up and set her ablaze.

Surinder Kaur, in her statement with the duty magistrate, named all neighbours, including some women, who beat her up and set her on fire before fleeing. She alleged that the accused resorted to stone pelting while she was alone at her house on April 25.

The accused, she alleged, had a dispute with her and they were trying to pressurise her to reach a compromise, but she refused.She alleged that panchayat member Baljinder Kaur, Jhelu and his wife Baby, Swarno, Pimpo and Rajji and others attacked her house.

DC issues notice to ‘callous’ officials

INLD leader, advocate Vijay Bansal, has served legal notice to the Financial Commissioner-cum-principal secretary, department of Revenue and Disaster Management and Consolidation, Haryana, principal secretary, department of Information and Public Relations, Haryana, financial commissioner, department of Town and Country Planning, Haryana, and Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman, District Disaster Management Committee, Panchkula, over their apathetic attitude towards disaster management in the recent years.

Bansal said the Disaster Management Act, 2005, was enacted by the Government of India to provide requisite institutional mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the disaster management plans. The aim was to ensure measures by various wings of government to prevent disasters and for undertaking a holistic, coordinated and prompt response to any disaster-like situation. The Act also provides for the constitution of the national funds at the state and district-levels. It also provides for specific role for local bodies in disaster management, including Panchayati Raj Institutions as well as urban local bodies like municipalities.

The notice also interpreted that Panchkula was vulnerable to earthquakes and prone to destruction, because of Pinjore fault lines.

The Geological Survey of India gave a detailed report that Chandimandir and places close to Nada-Sahib were more prone to destructions.

67 students donate blood

Sixty-seven students and staff members donated blood at the blood donation camp held at IIT Ropar.Deputy Commissioner GK Singh inaugurated the camp and called upon youngsters to donate blood for the cause of humanity. He said a donor did not feel any weakness and the donated blood was revitalised in the body within 15 days.

The NCC in charge of IIT Ropar, assistant professor Dr Navin Kumar said the camp was held in collaboration with the Rotary Club and the event would be an annual affair.

Cash, gold worth lakhs stolen

Thieves targeted a house at Sector 21 and decamped with cash and gold worth lakhs while the family was not at home.According to the police, the thieves targeted the house of Parvinder Singh. The family had gone out of station when thieves broke into the house. They broke open all cupboards and ransacked the house before leaving.

They took away three watches, two diamond pieces, four diamond rings, one gold chain, one gold locket, silver jewellery, two diamond sets, two pairs of earrings, Rs 70,000, one video camera and three cameras.

The police were informed and they reached the spot with a dog squad. A Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory team also visited the spot and took samples for examination.

A case under Sections 454 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Sector 19 police station.

Youth held for bigamy

Chandigarh, May 1
A 26-year-old youth, Sachin Kumar, a resident of Ropar, who wedded a Sector 38 resident though he was already married was arrested by the police on charges of forgery and rape. He was apprehended after his second wife got to know of this fact and complained to the cops after informing second wife, Savita.

According to the police, Kumar first married on October 15 last year and then married again on November 15. He is unemployed and owns a small piece of agricultural land in Gharuan village in Ropar district. The suspect was produced in court, that sent him to 14-day judicial custody. — TNS

Skating: Rolling Tigers lift Gold Cup

Rolling Tigers Academy, Panchkula, lifted the Gold Cup by emerging overall champions in the All-India Gold Cup Sardar Sewa Singh Memorial Speed Skating Championship 2011 that concluded at The Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, today.The skaters from the academy clinched a total of 94 medals (43 gold, 31 silver and 20 bronze) to be declared as the overall champions.

Rohit clinches U-18 title

Rohit Dhiman, a trainee of the Total Tennis Academy, won the top honours in the U-18 category by beating Parminder Singh 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-5 during the AKSIPS Total Tennis Tournament being played at Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 45.

Rohit, who displayed great match temperament, took around three hours to beat his rival. Earlier, he got the better of top seed Sachit Malhotra and Chirag Bajwa. In the title clash today, Dhiman lost the first set in a tie-break 6-7(2-7), but came back from behind to take the second set 6-4. In the decider, both players tried hard to take point from each other. Parminder took lead 2-1 and was serving to retain the serve, but all went in vain as Rohit started playing better and took 5-2 lead in the third set. Left handed Parminder found his rhythm in spin serve, which Rohit had no answer to level the score 5-5. At 5-5, Rohit controlled his unforced errors to take next two games in a row to take the set, game and the title.

Sonali Bansal of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, clinched girls U-18 title after thrashing Neamat Aulakh of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The U-14 final matches in boys and girls categories will be played between Chirag Bajwa and Rohit Dhiman at 3 pm on Monday.

Chandigarh trounce Mohali

Unbeaten knock of 78 runs by Yuvraj Gill helped the Chandigarh District team beat Mohali District team by 113 runs in the CCA Cricket Tournament for U-14 being held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36.

After winning the toss, Chandigarh team elected to bat first and mustered a total of 246 runs for 6 wickets in the allotted 40 overs.

Gill displayed a fine touch during his sensible 78-run knock. Shubham Chand supported him by chipping in 55 runs off 36 balls.

For Mohali, Avinash claimed 2 for 56.

In reply, Mohali team were restricted to 133. Gurpreet Singh emerged the highest scorer with 28 runs, whereas Anmol hit 25 runs.

Chandigarh’s Ishan Mavi produced good bowling spell and finished as the highest wicket taker with 3 for 20. Yogesh Aggarwal claimed 2 for 21.

Wrestling meet this month

The Chandigarh Wrestling Association will be organising the state championship in sub-junior and junior categories this month.

This was stated by association general secretary Darshan Lal while releasing this year’s sports calendar.

“Besides the scheduled meet, we will also organise coaching camps to prepare our wrestlers for sub-junior and junior national championship this month,” said Darshan Lal.

He added that the Chandigarh Sub Junior and Junior Boys and Girls Freestyle and Greeco Roman Style Wrestling Championship would be held on May 14 and 15, while a 15-day coaching camp for the state team would be held from May 20.

The CWA will give cash prizes to winners on August 15.

The events as per the calendar for 2011-12 are:

l Sub-junior Boys & Girls State Free Style & Greeco Roman Style Wrestling Championship on May 14.

l A 15-day coaching camp from May 20.

l Junior Boys & Girls State Free Style & Greeco Roman Style Wrestling Championship on May 15.

Arvinderpreet Singh of Punjab accumulated eight points to emerge champion by defeating Ritwan Sauntra of Jammu and Kashmir in the final round of the first Chandigarh below 2200 All-India Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament 2011 that concluded at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here today.

Sumit Grover of J&K finished second with 7.5 points. He defeated Vikas Sharma of Punjab, while Pardeep Arora of Punjab with identical 7.5 points stood third. Ravinder Singh Palli, Mayor of Chandigarh, distributed prizes and trophies among winners. — TNS
