Free @ 40
Of course, we know, every movie is not a paisa wasool full-on entertainment. However, every movie sure leaves us with a lesson—to never watch a particular actor ever again or that all first-day-first-shows are not worth it. Surprisingly, yes can you believe it, an actor like Govinda and a lesser-known damsel Yuvika could give us an insight into the psyche of men in their forties. Their movie Naughty @ 40 might not last long on the box office, but the observation from the flick sure will. What’s with men at 40, why do they get naughty? We’ve heard men become responsible and mature when they touch 40 (we have heard more and seen less), then what brings the streak of ‘naughtiness’? Men and women pour their heart out! Did someone say life expectancy has increased, men have to be either in their 60s or 70s to be called buddha! “Absolutely right,” Ashok Tewari, 42, a liquor contractor from Chandigarh nods in approval. “Life actually begins at 40, when a man has dutifully followed all responsibilities. Men in this age are way past the constant blabbering from his wife, kids have chosen their career; logically, this is the right time to live for oneself.” Ashok sure wouldn’t be chained in the numerical 40 figure! And so will others in this age. Rather than sulking about every day gone by, they will live it for themselves in some naughty style. Meenakshi, 36, an architect from Ludhiana, on the contrary feels that naughtiness has nothing to do with age. “Men can be naughty at any age. I think those in their 40s begin to realise that it is a decline for them, and they want to make the best of this time. They fall in love with themselves all over again, which also means they don’t mind falling in love with someone else as well.” What Meenakshi says can be considered. A little secret here - men in their forties do acquire a characteristic charm! Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan are examples of charismatic men at 40. Women too get attracted to men at this age, courtesy a sound bank balance! “Freedom is a word spelt loud and clear for men at 40,” laughs Mukesh Bijpuria, 41, an ad-filmmaker. “Life is amazing at 40. Do your own things, travel, go for spas, splurge, might as well make a girlfriend, this age is to be lived to the fullest.” However, not all men are lucky at 40, some are still tied to many responsibilities. Besides, a lot depends on the mindset. Some men feel alive at all ages; some feel dejected the minute they hit 30. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

Both Sumit and Paras, left behind set roles their families had envisioned for them. “It was the call of music. I am glad I could make my passion my profession,” says Sumit. Happy at avenues that are open now for DJs, Sumit shares, “Today DJs are no more restricted to playing numbers. More and more of them are playing original tracks. We already have a number and a Punjabi video, and would carry on making new music,” shares Sumit. Their band’s song Sat Sri Akal has been received well by audience in India and abroad. Life of a DJ is pretty happening. Shares Sumit, “I have a Guinness Book record to my credit with nine other DJs for playing music for the longest party. I could make this happen because I followed my heart.” For those interested in this profession, Sumit has a suggestion. “It offers a world of opportunities, but go for it only if you have the passion.” He also has an academy called Gurukul where DJs are trained. It is based in Delhi and Mumbai, and there are plans to open a branch in Chandigarh soon. “Chandigarh is a city close to my heart because in the beginning of my career I won a championship here. Will Bips and John reunite?
Bipasha Basu and John Abraham were considered Bollywood’s hottest and strongest couple. That was before they parted ways earlier this year after dating for nine long years!
Neither party has confirmed the split. Sources close to both actors say that there is definitely love and a sense of longing between them so they might get back together. A friend of Bipasha informs us, “Bipasha and John were together for nine years and that is a long time to be in a relationship with somebody. It hurts both of them that the media is circulating stories linking them with other people. They need their space to recover from the break-up right now. Bipasha still loves John and John also feels the same way. It is just that their relationship did not work out and that is very sad.” Bipasha is currently shooting in Russia for Players while John is in the UK for Desi Boyz. —

Jiney lahore nai dekhiya…o jamiya nai' (one who hasn't seen Lahore, is not born) is an old Punjabi saying. And it seems all those who have not been (or even been) to Lahore have thronged 'Made in Pakistan', the second addition of CII exhibition in order to promote trade between SAARC countries on at the Himachal Bhavan-28. Some 60 glittering stalls, most manned by womenfolk have an array of suits, footwear, handicrafts, carpets and a special food court. A Rs 10 ticket makes you enter the arena bustling with people. The first stall has palmist and astrologer Shehzad Khan and a queue of women waiting patiently to know about their future. Rest, it's what womenfolk love - suits, saris, footwear, jewellery. If one thought Punjabis have enough of shimmer, the stalls here are a step ahead. Ornate silver gotta patti work on saris, suits some crisp cotton, others with elaborate embroideries, stoles with mirror work and colourfully embellished duppattas, there is a whole range. The footwear is as colourful as the jewellery. Prices are from Rs 300 onwards. Mashal has some amazing beadwork multi-utility pieces that can be stitched on suits or kurtas or even worn independently.
Interestingly, suits are high necks. And, many of them really long, "We bring what your heroines are wearing in movies," says a woman from the stall. There are marble and onyx pieces starting from Rs 50, small animal show pieces to kitchenware, vases and candle-stands. Handmade carpets from Afghanistan are priced from Rs 50 onwards. Hashmi Surma has a range of eyecare products. With some 200 years to their credit, Hashim Surma has some clients, with Vidya Balan touted to be one. "Our products have all natural elements saffron, pearls, silver and gold leaves along with the regular," says Mohammad Rashid. The fair also has food stalls from Pakistan. Kebabs, biryani and kormas promise to get you the authentic tastes from Pakistan. They have also included vegetable biryanis as demand for vegetable fare is huge. Most of the businesses displaying their work have the Internet and enthusiastic parties are exchanging numbers to promote inter-country trade. (On till May 3) |
In search of the right path...
Punjab has become the cancer capital of the country, with some villages full of kids born with cerebral palsy. "If anyone is responsible for it, it's the materialistic, selfish society. The gurus have left this land of great civilization," says Yogi Ashwani in Chandigarh recently for a talk organised by C&C Constructions, developer of Mohali Junction. An MBA, Yogi Ashwani was on a different path, when a search for the cure of cancer for a close relative led him nowhere. "It was then that I thought of turning to Vedic knowledge. This ancient civilization must have something that it has continued when so many others have come and gone," shares Ashwani. "Today, yog is as popular as is it misunderstood," says Ashwani who propounds Sanatan Kriya. "Done in its true form as put in our Vedas, Sanatan Kriya makes you resistant to emotional and physical troubles," says Ashwani, whose followers have got together to form Dhyan Foundation, which endeavours to share and spread the 'gyan' of the pristine form of yoga. Concerned by mistaken versions of yoga that make an appearance each single day, Yogi Ashwani clarifies the misconceptions gathered around Tantra as well. "Tantra is an instant, immediate science that aims at evolution and not harming anyone," says Yogi Ashwani who believes in 'guru-shishya parampara'. "What you do comes back," says this Yogi who recommends social service to make this world a better place. |
Female dogs 'more intelligent' than male canines A study has found that female canines are more intelligent than males, and that in at least once task the females have the edge. In the study, 25 female and 25 male dogs were each firstly shown either a small or large ball emerging and then reappearing. The animals were then shown a small or large ball disappearing and being replaced by the opposite of what had been taken away. Scientists then measured the dogs' reactions to something that they would consider "impossible" by measuring how long they stared at the new ball. "If something unexpected or, say, impossible is to happen, children and animals will look longer at the event," said the experts. —ANI |
Master Chef Chilly days are past tense but lets bring on the ‘other’ chilli ! This perennial American favourite is full of zing. We imagine chilli to be Mexican in origin but this is what a Mexican dictionary has to say: "Chilli is a detestable food passing itself off as Mexican, sold in the US from Texas to New York." Vegetarians can swap the minced lamb with good quality soya flakes. (I recommend the better quality soya because I've noticed that the cheaper ones have a beany after-taste.) The heat is imparted to the dish with the use of chillies but the name "chilli" doesn't have to do with it! Here, the word means peppers! Try this hearty meal that warms you up from the inside! Chili con carne 1 tbsp oil, 1 large onion 1 red bell pepper 4 garlic cloves 1 tsp chilli powder (Kashmiri will do) 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp powdered cumin 500 gm minced lamb (or soya flakes) 1 chicken/veg stock cube 500 gm tomatoes ½ tsp dried marjoram 1 tsp sugar 4 tbsp tomato purée 2 ½ cups cooked rajmah soured cream for garnishing Method Chop the onion into small dice and chop the bell pepper into similar sized pieces. Heat the oil, add the onions an cook till translucent. Tip in the garlic, bell pepper, chilli, paprika and cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add and brown the mince(or soya) into the pan. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, not lumpy. For the sauce, crumble your stock cube into 1 ½ cups of hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture along with chopped tomatoes. Tip in the marjoram, sugar, salt and pepper and tomato purée. Simmer gently till the mince mixture looks thick, moist and saucy. Add the cooked beans and bring to the boil again, tasting and adjusting the chilli and seasoning. Leave your chilli to stand for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavours to mingle. Garnish with sour cream and serve with rice or bread. |
Kate Middleton’s long Chantilly lace-sleeved ivory white gown that she wore on her wedding day got the thumb’s up from Indian designers, who said she looked “feminine and delicate” and has set a trend for would-be brides.” She was looking amazingly feminine and delicate in the ivory gown. I like the lacy corseted upper. However, I would have liked a slight embellishment with precious stones to enhance the royal feel,” Delhi-based designer Varija Bajaj said. Arpan Vohra said: “She was looking super chic and very feminine. Kate Middleton, as we all know, is very fashion conscious. Considering she is a tall person, the gown was a perfect fit for her.” Vohra, however, felt an off-shoulder cut would have enhanced her personality more. “I wish she would have added an off-the-shoulder neckline. It would have simply looked great on her with a long trail of veil and crown as the final touches,” she said. Bangalore-based designer Raj Parnani said: “She was looking like the princess of the century in her gown. Everything about her was so perfect that I will say her dress will be my inspiration for making a new collection.” Mumbai-based designer Anand Kabra said the Duchess of Cambridge was looking fantastic with her minimalistic look and added: “She has set a trend for all the would-be brides. She was looking stunning, clean, structured, feminine and sophisticated in her getup. I would say that the dress befitted the modern day princess.” Reynu Taandon described the dress as the “perfect combination of tradition, elegance and modern chic look.” Parvesh Rana from the label Parvesh and Jai said: “She definitely justified the royal feel. She has been gifted with innocence and elegance on her face and it would be insane to compare her to other previous queens.” —IANS |
What’s the DJ playing?
This is for those who are sick of Sheila Ki Jawaani, apart from hordes of similar tracks of the same genre. Invariably, the music is a repeat at every party and there’s a request on top of it. Till the auditory senses go numb and our celebrated man behind the console, actually chucks the discs he was spinning an hour ago and settles down with some Bob Marley, soft rock, slow ballads, reggae and the like…here’s a peep into the playlists of some of our city-based Disc Jockeys, which also reinforces that their music tastes differ from what they play. More often than not, it’s a shift from Dum Maaro Dum to Like a Rolling Stone. A marked shift in personal tastes! Shares DJ Chinx, resident DJ, Tao, “When am not playing for others, then all by myself I listen to a lot of slow rock and reggae…for me, it’s artists like Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Alpha Blondy…" While his caller tune had us listening to Kanye West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing. What you’d play for a crowd of hundreds is not something you’d listen to all by yourself! When we called up DJ KK, he was playing at a private do, and we guess, also taking requests of the beaten Bollywood tracks. He laughs, “Sometimes, you have to play one song thrice at the same party, let alone different ones. For us we’ve listened to it a hundred times, but for those people at the party they are listening to it only that time." When he’s not making others dance, rock ballads and soft music is what he’d unwind with. “There are numerous songs that are all-time favourites. It’s Cliff Richard, songs by Nirvana and certain other such tracks." After enthralling one and all, entertaining the crowds, including some crazy requests for jumpy tracks, probably, it’s time to go soft and slow for most. Guess when they want to fire in the air? When they are asked to dish out something that from sheer repetition ceases to be music to their ears. As one puts it, “When requests to play the likes of Sheila Ki Jawani or Munni Badnaam Hui and other similar typical Bollywood tracks keep pouring in." Then what do they do? Laughs DJ Chinx, “Then we repeat those tracks, you have to make everyone at the party happy." Can’t play what they like, make them like what you play! DJ Sameer, resident DJ at a city-based lounge, takes a clever way out. “The idea is to make people enjoy. The trick is to make them groove on what you like listening to." As for his personal tastes, “Nothing is fixed, preferences keep changing depending on mood and time. There are basically two to three genres that I like, which are, tech house, progressive house, drum and bass and dub step." Meanwhile, if the Sheila Ki Jawani is still resonating, for a change, request your DJ to play his personal favourite! manpriya@tribunemail.com |
With a music career spanning 20 years and Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan as one of the admirers, rock band Parikrama has come a long way. The band’s lead vocalist Nitin Malik feels that the rock culture in the country has undergone major changes since they started playing in 1991. “The young audience today know their music so it is very challenging for us to play in front of them. They no longer want to listen to us play covers but prefer original scores instead," says the Xerox hitmaker.Have things changed for better in terms of money? “The marketing strategies have also gone through a sea change with the online platform. It is helping the rock scenario in the country," says Nitin whose brother, Subir is also part of the band.Even Saif Ali Khan likes to jam with the band and Nitin says they don’t mind being sidelined when the actor is around."Saif is a friend and he makes it a point to play with us once in two years. He is a team player and extremely down to earth. He respects us as a band but he is busy so it is not always easy to get him," adds Nitin. Parikrama is currently promoting the fifth season of History Rocks on FOX History & Entertainment channel with which it has been associated for the past few years. The band recently performed to the cover of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix and other stars of the Woodstock generation in the Capital. An exclusive History Rocks The Woodstock Generation album was released at the concert by Parikrama along with Debarpita Banerjee, Vice President, marketing Fox International channels. —PTI |
In the hit list
Character dheela hai from Ready Salman Khan is the man behind this song’s success. There was another song in its place but he changed it to this one. Composed by Pritam and sung by Neeraj Shridhar and Amrita Kak, it sounds like the Kambakkht Ishq title track, Marjaani from Billu, and Mohabbat naam hai kiska from Ajnabee and is unbelievably addictive and catchy! Choreographed by a young dude called Mudassar, Salman’s moves are easy to recreate and quite funny. Zarine Khan looks ultra hot and fabulous in the song though she needs to polish her moves. Salman has paid tribute to legends such as Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dharmendra. The newest song on this list has already become a rage. Party abhi baaki hai from FALTU
New composer duo Sachin and Jigar have composed one of the biggest hit songs of the year. We know it sounds like Poker Face by Lady Gaga and songs of the Black Eyed Peas but we have to admit it is addictive and catchy! Hard Kaur is unique when it comes to rapping. The song has played a huge role in the movie’s success and everyone is grooving to it, everywhere! Sing along! Dilli dilli from No One Killed Jessica
The rock song has been composed by maverick composer Amit Trivedi and captures the soul of the film and the city of Delhi. Aditi Singh Sharma is the powerful voice behind this zany song. You cannot help swinging your head to it when you listen to it and it is perfect to dance to, as well. Laungda lashkara from Patiala House
The success of this album has out Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy back on the map. It is a fun song but it is nothing extraordinary. We’d describe it as “typical”. The song features the entire cast and is played in the end credits. It has been sung by Jasbir Jassi, Hard Kaur, and Mahalaxmi Iyer. Mutton song from Luv Ka The End
Sung by Krishan Beura in five voices, this song makes a mockery of conventional item songs. Composed by Ram Sampath and featuring hero Taaha Shah dressed as a bar girl, it objectifies men as the women have a laugh over the guy’s tactics. Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned the insane lyrics. The song is reminiscent of Ainvayi ainvayi. Youngsters like it, adults do not! Darling from 7 Khoon Maaf
The movie did not work. As always, Vishal Bhardwaj delivered an addictive song (he has done so with Beedi from Omkara and Dhantenan from Kaminey before). The song features Priyanka Chopra in a Russian avatar (because she is dating a Russian man at this moment in the film). The song is an adaptation of Russian folk song Kalinka. Usha Uthup’s robust vocals and Rekha Bhardwaj’s sensuous vocals bring this fabulous composition alive! Saddi Galli from Tanu Weds Manu
The success of this RDB song contributed to the success of the film. People waited for a proper video of the song in the movie but there was none as it only plays in the background during a wedding in the film. The song is a rage everywhere: discos, rickshaws, music players, televisions, and the radio. |
Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who donned a bikini in Dostana, says she is not comfortable going nude."When it comes to drawing a line at my individuality, nudity is something I am not comfortable with," Priyanka told reporters after launching the book Age of Sinnocence at MTV's Youth Marketing Forum here. However, the actress said she was open to kiss her female co-stars on screen. "I would love to kiss an actress on screen...but she should be hot," she quipped. To a query on model Poonam Pandey, who had expressed her willingness to go nude for if India wins the World Cup, Priyanka said, "The main thing is she did not go nude. She did not do what she had said...It is her life. She can do whatever she wants to." — PTI |
Sonakshi’s shopping destinations Sonakshi Sinha is just one film old and she is already a household name. She’s on magazine covers, news and television. She has two releases this year: Joker with Akshay Kumar and Race 2 with Saif Ali Khan. She’s also shooting for Kick, starring Salman Khan. Being a fashion design student, Sonakshi selects her own dresses, as she knows what will suit her. “When I was fat, I was very particular about my dressing. Now, as an actress, I don’t have much time, but I make it a point to design my clothes,” she says. Sonakshi loves shopping, but doesn’t call herself a shopaholic. She has a few favourite designers, and is partial to the works of Rocky S and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. She talks about her favourite shopping destinations. India: I love India because you get variety. Whenever I travel, I make it a point to buy sarees, kurtis and dresses. I love street shopping in Delhi. Paris: Paris is my favourite shopping destination. I believe fashion belongs to Paris. You get different kind of textures. Paris is home to a number of large fashion houses, including Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, so you have a reason to love Paris. London: It’s my favourite holiday destination, and along with that, favourite shopping destination too. I like to pick up shoes and bags from London. Dubai: I make sure I am visiting Dubai during the Dubai shopping festival. You get everything at such good rates. We also asked her about her favourite style and items she loves to shop for, and pat came the answers! Favourite attire? I love casuals, as I am comfortable in them. Whenever I go shopping or go out with friends, you will always find me in a pair of jeans. I even wear jeans for even some events. Don’t get me wrong, though; I also love dressing up according to the occasion. For instance, if I attend awards, parties or a marriage, I dress formally. In your wardrobe we will find... A white shirt, blue denims, some pink T-shirts and an LBD. One thing you keep buying? I am mad about jewellery. Whenever I buy a new dress, I make sure I am buying some jewellery or accessories to match it. I like chains with single pendants in particular. Best buy? A Gucci LBD, which was my first dress of an international brand. I still have it. —HRM |

Hollywood icon Cary Grant enjoyed being called a gay, says a new memoir penned by his only daughter. Jennifer, now 45, has admitted that her famous father was always intrigued by the gay rumours and may have even played up the reports on purpose.
"Can't blame men for wanting him, and wouldn't be surprised if Dad even mildly flirted back. When the question arises, it generally speaks more about the person asking," she writes in Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant. "(But) Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay. He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong," she added. Jennifer insisted that she was a living testament to her dad's legendary charm. "OK, I had a crush on Dad. OK, more than a little crush on Dad. My other real crushes were (singer) Donny Osmond and (French actor) Jean-Paul Belmondo," she added. The memoir, which also includes rare photos and personal mementos of their time together before his death in 1986 at the age of 82, is due for release in the US next week. — ANI |
Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman is frustrated with his unusual habit of walking in sleep. The 42-year-old star achieved fame from his role as Wolverine in the X-Men series and has given hits like The Prestige and The Boy from Oz. "I'm one of those people who runs in their sleep, I twitch a lot. I'm fine with it, but my wife says that she can count to 17 after I fall asleep and I'll start twitching. Luckily she's quite a heavy sleeper but that's probably my most frustrating habit," he said. Kate and Leopold star expressed his wish to have superpowers and do impossible things. "If I could have a superpower I'd love to be able to swim and breathe underwater. I'd love to be Aquaman," Jackman said. "I'm sure there are better superpowers though, flying would be good and teleporting, as I have family and friends all over the world. I'm a little greedy, I want three superpowers," he said. — PTI |
The foodies Poonam Bindra Cosmopolitan, inside the West End Mall, is an elegant, buzzing place and has the perfect setting for a 'fine dining' experience. With its stylish interiors in black, gold and silver, the place offers a very contemporary look. Launched in September last year, Cosmopolitan, of the RTC hospitality group, is a huge hit with Ludhianvis. As we bite into the thin crust pizza (supposed to be their specialty), sipping the delicious Long Island iced tea, we see many like us enjoying various delicacies. "Our favourite is their well-blended Pinacolada and the Tequila sunrise," say the newly married Arvind and Mayna Mehan, who are regulars at the restaurant. The lounge area is popular with youngsters. Say Sachit Kapoor and Vineet Gupta, both affluent young businessmen, "We have learnt to enjoy other cuisines here. Their 'Know Suey', a coconut curry spiced with fresh herbs and spices, is wonderful. And our favourite dessert is the 'Chocolate Fondant', which has the Fondant served with blue berry crumble and a dash of ice cream." Interestingly, all Indian main courses have accompaniments like the 'zeera aloo', plain rice and an assortment of breads. Shares the manager, Vinod Sangra, "Cosmopolitan has introduced the concept of 'golden hours' wherein the vegetarian dishes and the mocktails are priced at Rs 99, and non-vegetarian dishes and cocktails at Rs 145 for the period from 4pm to 8pm everyday." |
