Neck-deep in water!
Summer is here. So are swimming buffs, prancing around the pool. Touted as ‘the best form of exercise’, swimming is supposed to be a good exercise for each body part. Well, there are other reasons why some are hooked on to it. They share the significance swimming holds in their lives. Fun sport Aanchal Bajwa, second-year IT engineering student at Panjab University, got inspired from her father. “I started swimming very early, but after compliments from people I took it seriously from class six onwards,” shares Aanchal. She has gone on to national competitions and won medals! Special ties “It’s such a fun sport. I have tried other sports too – martial arts, athletics. But they would leave me sweaty and exhausted,” says Aanchal. However, her eyes light up as she talks about swimming, “It’s so much fun. Whenever you swim, it’s total refreshment on the cards.” Why swim? Aanchal wants to carry on swimming ‘forever’. “It’s so healthy, increases concentration, builds stamina and I feel it builds immunity,” she says. “However, the best part is there is no qualification required. Just practice and you keep growing with it.
Making a splash Nakul Khanna, class 12th student, started swimming from class 1. “My grandmother would take me each afternoon to swim,” he fondly remembers. Special ties Ever since, that’s what Nakul does every summer afternoon. Back from school, he laps for the splendid swimming pool that’s the centre of his palatial house. “Sometimes, I envy the fish who can live in water all the time,” exclaims the boy. Why swim? “You know water activates your brain cells,” says Nakul philosophically. He loves to swim to lower the body temperature and have some ‘relaxing’ fun. Need of the hour
Shiraz Khan, model and actor, took to swimming around a year back. “I participated in a reality show that required under water tasks, which made me learn swimming,” shares Shiraz. Special ties “There is nothing half as relaxing as water,” claims Shiraz, who hits the pool every summer evening. “Howsoever stressed I am, the touch of water removes it immediately,” she says. Why swim? If you are to slim down and have that glow on your face, Shiraz recommends swimming! “It is a good breathing exercise, helps to lose weight and tone the body. Just ensure that you hit the pool in the evenings,” she says. Dancing like a dolphin Her friends say she doesn’t swim but ‘dances’ in water. For Gagan, professional dance instructor, swimming didn’t come that naturally. “As a child I was scared of ‘water ghosts’ and always worried about my sister who loved swimming,” says Gagan. However, Gagan’s sister not only banished ‘water ghosts’ from Gagan’s life, but also presented her with a passion for lifetime — swimming. Special ties Gagan’s family, who had a keen interest in sports, motivated her a lot. “I can do acrobatics in water, can stay underwater for more than 3 minutes, breast-stroke is my favourite although I also like doing butterfly, which is tougher,” she says. Why swim? Swimming is a passion with Gagan and this is why she recommends it to everyone, “It rejuvenates the body and soul.” People standing in a corner around the pool, feeling scared to enter it concerns Gagan, “I think one should always take a chance to learn something new that’s good and swimming is definitely one of those things.” mona@tribunemail.com |
Dine, alfresco
When air-conditioned environs symbolise suffocating office interiors, it’s time to actually get out while going out! As against the initial makeshift trend, now even a 20-cover café will ensure there are some chairs spread in the open, be it the backyard or outside. Increasingly, rooftop space is giving way to open-air restaurants. “People are looking for a change. As of now, they are tired of monotonous ambience and air-conditioned surroundings. Our multi-cuisine open-air extension ‘Sun n Breeze’ is the first outlet that is getting sold,” Manoj Madhukar, general manager, Hotel Maryland shares some of the trends. He adds, “In fact people request for a table inside only if the open space is full.” Even though the 64-cover restaurant operates only for dinner! When boutique hotel Bella Vista set up shop, it ensured there were enough open space options for its in-house guests. The all-day dining restaurant Serenade has an extension of 40-cover that opens to a pool deck. To ring in the true blue feel of outside ambience, the deck is surrounded by grass patches while a water wall with cascades flows along. “Though it’s operational only for our resident guests, if the weather is suitable, more than 80 per cent of people request for a table outside,” shares Shamsher Chauhan, banquet manager. The economics part of operations too works in favour. Adds Madhukar, “Such places are functional for as many as nine months of the year. It’s only for three months during rainy season that people prefer indoor environment.” Open-air resto bars, especially on the rooftop, perhaps lend the right flavour to the ambience. Who would mind some food while soaking in slice of nature and breeze? Adds Chauhan, “During summers, it’s evening time that sees full attendance and during winters, it is almost throughout the day if it’s sunny. So they are actually in demand throughout the year.” Another advantage of the concept, share the people from the industry, is that even small spaces appear relatively large under the skies. Wouldn’t the same amount of space under closed doors give a cramped feeling? At times, it is sheer ambience. And not about the good food they serve or the best wine list. Vertigo, at a dizzying 62nd floor of The Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok, qualifies for the highest open-air place in Asia. New York would perhaps, lose a part of the popularity if it weren’t for myriad open-air resto bars that give a view of the Manhattan skyline. Even when the view is not the whole city, the charm of the backdrop remains. Opines Raju Chadha, co-owner, Bombay Chopsticks—10, “I don’t think in Chandigarh we have as many open air joints in the real sense. Bombay Chopsticks is the first of its kind Chinese open air restaurant in the city.” He adds, “It increases the ambience of the whole place and lends a distinct feel and charm to it. The response to the open space has been great. Food under the skies and amidst huge screens is better experienced than described.” Guess that sums it up! manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Actor Govinda, who is making a comeback after a long gap with Naughty @ 40 says this is his third inning in Bollywood and now he is no mood to refuse films. “This is my third inning in Bollywood. Now I can afford to do all kind of cinema. I am not in a mood to refuse films. There was a time when I was refusing so many films. Especially in last two years I refused lot of films. And we keep waiting for good films thinking it would turn out good,” Govinda said. There are two films of Govinda in the offing - Ravi Chopra’s Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai and Run Bhola Run. Both are comedies. Run Bhola Run is a romantic-comedy written and directed by Neeraj Vora starring Govinda, Tusshar Kapoor, Ameesha Patel and Celina Jaitley in lead roles. Making some Shor in Bollywood
Sendhil Ramamurthy is best known for his role as Mohinder Suresh in the sci-fi fantasy television series, Heroes. He is also shooting another mini-series called Covert Affairs. Currently, he is making his Bollywood debut in Shor in the City and is paired opposite Preeti Desai. We caught up with the actor and asked him about the movie, his association with Bollywood and working in Hollywood.
What prompted you to sign Shor In The City? I’m Indian and I always wanted to do a Bollywood film. When I met directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, they showed me a small film on which Shor in The City is based, which prompted me to sign it because I loved the concept. Did you enjoy shooting in India? It’s a great place to work. Tusshar Ray (director of photography) was brilliant. Indian filmmakers give 100 per cent to their films so it’s a wonderful experience working with them. Also Bollywood is going through an experiment phase, which is interesting. What’s the difference in working in India and the US? The people in the US are more practical and there is a time limit when it comes to work. However, both industries are passionate about cinema. What was the last Bollywood film that you watched? 3 Idiots and Jodha Akbar. I loved the latter because of the way it was shot. What about your co-stars? Preeti Desai was awesome to work with. Tusshar is really sweet. He makes notes and is eager to learn. Preeti and he introduced me to Indian street food. Any plans to shift to India? I don’t think that it will happen. My family is in the States and I was born and brought up there. I may visit India once in a while. What do you like about India? The Gateway of India. I spent most of my nights shooting there and I love the location. You wanted Deepika Padukone to see your last film Afterlife? (Laughs) She’s one of the prettiest actresses around. She and I come from Bangalore. I haven’t seen her films as yet, but I’ve met her in a few parties. Do you want her to watch this moviel? If she’s free, it would be great for her to come. — HRM |

Barefoot running can be beneficial while heavily cushioned running shoes may be leaving the foot prone to injury, according to a US sports medicine expert. Irene Davis of Harvard University has been studying both barefoot running and minimal footwear running, which uses a type of running shoe almost like a glove for the foot, but with a thin layer of rubber on the bottom, reports ABC Science. These shoes give the foot its full range of natural movement, but protect the sole from stones or extreme surface temperatures. Davis, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association, said cushioned running shoes encourage runners to land hard on the heel at the end of each stride. “When you land on your heel you end up with a very quick rise to peak in the force that your body experiences. That completely goes away when you run barefoot because you land on the ball of your foot,” said Davis. Davis and co-authors tested their theories by looking at Kenyan runners. “We wanted to find if people who had never worn shoes before demonstrated the same kind of running pattern,” said Davis. “We felt that was a better indication of how we were naturally meant to run because these individuals had never worn shoes. When we tested [the runners] in Kenya, we found exactly those same kinds of mechanics. They don’t land on their heels, they land with a very gentle forefoot strike pattern,” she said. Once you remove the shoe and take away the artificial shock absorber, the tendons and muscles in the foot, the ankle, calf and thigh start to do the job they were built for, Davis said. She said that causes some runners pain because they aren’t used to using those muscles to control the foot and absorb shock, and they tend to overdo it in the initial stages. “We’ve basically deconditioned our feet by wearing shoes and by wearing very robust motion controlling and cushioning shoes, which takes away some of the function of the foot,” she said. Davis said she has also found that running barefoot can help flatfooted people to strengthen and raise the arches. The study was presented at the 2011 Australasian Podiatry Conference in Melbourne. — ANI |
Power of silence
I am neither a romantic dreamer nor a mystic, but only a poet who portrays the realities of life through the medium of words,” says Dheera Khandelwal at the release of her latest Hindi poetry book Mukhar Maun (silence speaks) at a function held recently. While agreeing that ‘poets are born and not made’, Khandelwal shares that she started writing as a school student at Unaao in UP. And her father, who excelled in Persian, was her guiding light. As and when some incident or a social problem touched her soul, a poem was born. “Somehow I felt really relieved after I penned down something. I believe that a poet’s thought must reach the reader’s mind in simple words rather than heavy phrases, which dilute the message,” she opines. She adds, “My entry into the Indian Administrative Service in 1986 provided me more opportunities, which resulted in many anthologies like Neh Ke Deep, Maati Ki Mehak, Oas Ke Moti, Kadmon Ki Lya and the latest, Mukhar Maun. I am grateful to my life partner Dr KK Khandelwal, friends, colleagues and the literary fraternity for all the support.” |
