Public display or affection?
While papa Vijay Mallya was applauding Chris Gayle’s lofty sixes even as his team Royal Challengers beat SRK’s Kolkata Knight Riders, son Siddharth Mallya was caught celebrating with his girlfriend, actor Deepika Padukone. The attention immediately shifted from Gayle’s whirlwind century to a full-blown kiss that the couple shared after their team won. This wasn’t the first instance of public display of affection (PDA), but as expected it has once again set the debate on how much is too much rolling. Is our society gradually opening up to the idea of PDA? Or is the concept acceptable only in case of celebrities? City-based sociologist Rajesh Gill feels that the society has become liberal but at the same time, it understands the difference between a decent PDA and acts of obscenity. However, she says that the problem begins when PDA becomes a trend, “It’s perfectly fine if grown-ups are indulging in little mushy acts in public, but then there are school students who follow it just because they think it’s a ‘cool’ thing to do in public.” The glam world celebs are role models for most of the youngsters, who follow them without considering the consequences.
Display of love and affection at city clubs is a common sight now. The bouncers, besides maintaining law and order in the clubs, now have a more important task at hand. Says DJ Sameer, who is a witness to the evolving party scene in the city, “A fair number of youngsters visit night clubs only because they know the restrictions for intimacy with the partner are pretty less. The bouncers are deployed to intervene if PDA begins to amount to obscenity.” According to Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, PDA is a criminal offence, which amounts to punishment of imprisonment up to three months. Ranjan Lakhanpal, advocate and chairman, World Human Rights Protection Council, Chandigarh, says that Indian society is not rigid and not every display of affection in public is an offence. “We shouldn’t doubt the sensibility of the public. People have the ability to judge the difference between PDA and obscenity.” About Deepika and Siddharth Mallya’s act of celebration, he doesn’t mince words, “That was definitely an act of obscenity. Celebrities shouldn’t take law for granted.” At the same time, there’s no denying the fact that smaller issues are blown out of proportion when they concern popular names. Sudhanshu Pandey from the fraternity, however, feels that fame comes with a lot of responsibility. “When you are a celeb, think before you leap. People follow you and you have to behave with dignity, so that you can set examples for others to follow.” Although PDA is a very subjective issue, people do feel acts of obscenity should be dealt with strictly. Latika Sharma, a private bank employee, says, “The idea is to discourage youngsters from blindly emulating the Western culture. PDA is fine as long as it’s a peck on the cheek or a hug but don’t we all know where the limits are crossed.” Yes we all know it! ashima@tribunemail.com |
Hair stylist Jawed Habib shares notes on hair yoga, latest trends & much more
Just when the coinage ‘hair yoga’ had us exploring all sorts of possibilities, the moral of the story is - “Yoga means lifestyle, hair yoga too is all about lifestyle. There are no complicated asana involved.” Jawed Habib uncorks the tried and tested wine from a spanking new bottle. In the city to talk about “hair yoga” and summer haircare tips, he is at his conversational best, tending to the everyday scalp problems while giving a demo haircut at Jawed Habib’s Centre—35. With each snip, comes a haircare tip. “If your hair is healthy, they will certainly shine…layers give volume to your hair…her hair is thick, so what we’ll do is…” Continuing with the basics, a daily wash and a few glasses of water are what he strongly recommends. “If your hair are clean, you’ll never lose them. Dandruff is like poison for your hair. Wash your hair regularly. What is dandruff? It’s grease, pollution and grime in your hair.” Did someone say helmet is the culprit? He laughs, “That’s why all our cricketers are balding, since they wear a helmet…since it’s indispensable to safety and we all must wear it, I’d suggest wear a hanky before you put on the helmet.” Hair grooming is an industry now. And does he have grand plans for his profession? “Hair cutting is no more about barbership. It’s a profession now.“ He adds, “Our company’s going to be listed soon, making us the first hairdresser company in the world to be listed. We’ve filed in the papers.” Post his outlets in tier-three cities like Pathankot and Jalandhar, further expansion is on. “Wherever there are hair, I’ll be there.” Meanwhile, he points at someone’s shoulder length hair from the audience, “You have such long hair.” Perhaps, it’s time to go short with crops. “I know in this part of the region we love length and don’t really experiment much with length…among hair colouring, we do maximum hair colouring in the Punjab region.” As for hair yoga, remember, “It means hasso and mast raho,” he winds up. Point noted. manpriya@tribunemail.com |

A journalist once asked Steve Jobs (the successful Apple guy) — what is the secret drug that kept him going? Steve smiled and scribbled something on a piece of paper and passed it to the journalist. It said- ‘Creativity is a drug that I cannot live without. Do you know someone who supplies it?” Back at INIFD, Sector-8, we heard someone ask the same question to Ashley Rebello, the designer who made Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) look an adorable cop — How do you manage to create so many different looks for the same kind of people? “I have been prescribed to pop in a pill everyday. It’s called creative drug,” he smiles without batting an eyelid. Well, this is the only way you can understand the different looks on Sallu bhai in Dabangg, Bigg Boss and now in Ready. Creativity is the only reason that made sexy Pamela Anderson look sexier in a sari designed by Ashley for Bigg Boss, and it is the same creative juice mixed in his blood that made Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander looks like one fairy tale. Conducting an exclusive fashion workshop for INIFDians, he finds himself being bombarded with queries on Chulbul Pandey’s different look. He takes up all of them, readily! “Salman was playing a small town cop on Dabangg, so we suggested fitted trousers and shirts for him, which went down really well. We did a trial with Salman and Sonakshi (Yes, you can’t take chances with Sallu!), it clicked,” shares Ashley. All right, with the industry guys and gals focusing majorly on their screen look, styling seems to be a sort-after thing. “It is a part of the industry now. I still like to be creative in it. I don’t just pick stuff from the market and give it to the actors. I let my creative mind work on it, ” he adds, making it clear that he believes in giving a new look to every actor he works with. And how? “I visualise them in clothes I would want to give them, I understand their mind, body type as well as personality. I try to keep it as authentic as the people are,” tells the director who should be credited for pulling Vidya Balan out of the Sabyasachi look. Yes, finally. You will see her in a new look in her upcoming movie as well in other commercials. Before we miss out, put your hands together for Ashley, the designer made Pamela Anderson look hot in a sari on Bigg Boss. He laughs, “I got Pamela to wear a sari and man she carried the garment fabulously,” adds Ashley who would want to style and design for Kareena Kapoor in an epic film. As of now, he is designing for the forthcoming movies Ready, Bodygaurd and Double Dhamaal staring Sanjay Dutt & Mallika Sherawat. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

Asha not amused by new Dum Maaro… Asha Bhonsle is more than seventy-years-old but she is going to make her film debut with Maaee. She talks about singing, acting, and her favourite actresses. When asked about her opinion on the remix of Dum Maaro Dum, a song, which she sang 40 years ago, she replied, “I believe that once a song is made, it should not be remade. RD Burman’s songs are more than 40 years old but they are superhits even today. All those golden songs should not be touched to be recreated. It is a crime to touch those songs. There is a saying that even God would not stand on certain ground but the dumb person would stand there with his slippers on because he does not know the value of that zameen. What can I say to people to touch RD’s songs? I do not know what to say and I do not want to say anything. Good for the people who remix those golden songs. People will remember what is good and what is bad will be forgotten.” The legendary singer is making her debut in a movie called Maaee. She said, “I do not want to rehearse anything for the movie. I do not have to dance. I will sing for myself and I will be myself. I do not really want to act and show people something that I am not. I have never wanted to be an actress because I do not think I have a star quality or presence.” When asked about her favourite actresses she said, “Today’s actresses are good at what they do. I think Madhubala reflected God’s beauty. She was divine. I remember sitting open-mouthed whenever I used to meet her. I wondered that how could somebody be so pure and beautiful. After her, Hema Malini is somebody whom I find divinely beautiful. I remember once she was dressed as a goddess and I actually folded my hands in front of her because she looked like an actual goddess.” —HRM |
ollywood actor Rahul Bose has always done something different as he loves to experiment with his roles. And this time we will be seeing him in Onir’s film I AM. His story has a significant gay element to it. Bose says he signed the film because he was touched by the script’s honesty. You always to do serious cinema. What attracts you towards those films? No, I have done some commercial cinema too. I accept a role which I think I can play. I AM is a sensitive film and it gives a message. I don’t have the looks or body to be a superstar but I want to be an actor. I want people to know me as an actor and I am happy with what I am. Tell us something about your role. My story is called I AM Omar. I play one of the leads in the story about gays. It’s not about being gay; the film is about being caught being gay. How insulting it can be and how the entire society looks at gay men. My film is about twenty-five minutes long and shows how society and the police reacts to and behaves with gay men. So what’s your take? We cannot change what we are born with. Some are rich, some are poor, some are intelligent, some are not. In the same way, some are straight and some are gay. It is how God has made certain people so we cannot discriminate between God’s products. Thankfully, laws in favour of gays have been passed in India but I do not think the society has accepted gay men completely. How did you like working with Onir? It was fun. I wanted to work with him since a while. He is one of the rarest and most brilliant directors in our industry. He has his own unique way of story-telling. Common audiences may not understand what he wants to say or show but once you start understanding cinema, you will know his genius. Why do we see so little of you these days? Everything doesn’t excite me. I mean every script doesn’t excite me. I take up roles, which I think I can do. Cinema is progressing these days. We see the same old masala movies along with genuinely different movies. How many releases do you have this year? Actually I have six films set to release this year but I am not sure of the dates. I am still shooting for some of them. Kuch Love Jaisa, I AM, Mumbai Chakachak, Bits and Pieces, Click, and Marry Me are set to release this year. Have you signed any new films? Yes, I am also doing a film with Om Puri capturing the nuances of the Hindu-Muslim equation. There’s another project by Varun Malhotra. I would also like to work with Buddha (Buddhadeb Dasgupta) again, if things fall into place. I have signed Laptop with Kaushik Ganguly, which goes on the floors soon. —HRM |
Short story
Making inroads into a girl's daily wardrobe are the shorts. Calling the shots this summer is this dressing item, which spells comfort. Though shorts are not meant for the faint hearted, one need's to be comfortable in their skin to show off their gorgeous legs. Highly popular this season, they incorporate style and comfort at the same time, being a perfect choice for any occasion, which requires casual attire. Style check
Though the market is flooded with shorts you can choose from casual as well as more formal shorts. Casual shorts look stunning and can be worn with flats as well as heels or platforms, but formal one's needs to be worn with high heels only. This kind of shorts can be tight fitting or loose around the body as not all women benefit from the same styles. The length of the shorts as well as the fabric is another choice that you can make. "Though there is a variety to choose from but women can adapt the shorts to the body type and style of the outfit," says an employee at Just Casuals in Sector 9. A new high
It is the high waist shorts that have made a comeback this season and we suggest that you wear it with tops tucked in so you can emphasise their style. These shorts are available at Benetton, Kapsons-17 and Pantaloons. Lending us tips to wear shorts designer Amit Kashyap says, "Though leather is not meant for all, the classic leather shorts help create a sexy yet rebellious look. Wear these leather shorts with cute blouses, T-shirts and opt for heels or flats depending on personal preference." Trendsetters
Though the trendiest ways to wear shorts in 2011 have been presented by the designers on the ramp you can choose your own style from casual, chic or punk. "The casual-chic style shorts can be created out of a variety of fabrics such as linen, canvas and denim. Match it up with a comfortable pair of shoes and a blouse, a shirt or a T-shirt and you will most definitely look fabulously chic. For the punk look choose a tighter fit. Studded these shorts come dip-dyed and ripped. You can wear them with cool tops, tanks and even T-shirts," says designer Deepika Gehani. Last but the most talked about shorts are the formal ones. Latest trendsetters they are made out of tweed and have a simple and elegant look. These shorts have matching blazers with it and this gives it a formal style (we may add they are not meant for our city), but fashion knows no boundary. |
It’s rocking More than an ode to yesteryears actors, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra… the song looks like highlighting the concerns of Salman Khan. Character Dheela couldn't have had a better face than that of Dabanng Salman Khan. His partner in the song Zarine Khan is a welcome change of her overweight version that was seen in Veer. Both are looking great in the song that has already created the much-needed hype for the Salman Khan-Asin starrer, Ready. Ready to go
Character Dheela was the much-awaited song of the year and now when it has hit the screen; I think it will soon surpass the popularity of 'Munni' or 'Sheila'. He has, as always, danced in his signature style. Zarine Khan is a pleasant surprise in the video, although her skimpy golden dress is doing more of the talking than her expression-less face! — Supriya
Batish, a private firm employee What an idea!
Salman is looking sexy in the yesteryears actors' famous roles. He looks the best in the Raj Kapoor avatar with a moustache. The concept of choreography is fresh, which makes the video really interesting. The music is very catchy and it doesn't take much attention to register the track. The Anarkali and Salim act is adorable. — Jeevan Kaur, lecturer Past perfect
Be it his towel act in the Jeene ke hain char din or the No Entry title track, Salman does his typical moves that people love. The wacky lyrics and title of the track goes well with the choreography of the song. — Arush Singh,
class XII student. (As told to Ashima Sehajpal) |
Fashion blues
Long before a fashion show begins, a team of hairstylists and makeup artists is on the job, meeting designers, attending fitting sessions and working on dummies, says Ambika Pillai. But the celebrity hairstylist rues that people backstage don't get their due.
"For a show, our team consists of 18 to 20 skilled staff members. I get my list of designers two weeks before a fashion week. Fittings start five days before the show," Pillai, a native of Kerala who has been in the hairstyling and makeup business for 11 years, said. "I make sure I attend all fitting sessions because I get to see clothes, discuss the concept with designers and freeze a look for the show. If it's complicated to finalise a look, I invite designers at my salon and work on a model or a dummy to get the right look," she said. But she admits that people backstage don't get recognition. "It is not just makeup teams that don't get credit; there are so many people backstage that put in 100 per cent for the shows, but never get attention. Like they say, the show must go on and we strive to have a good week without anything going amiss," said Pillai, who has been part of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week for years. "Fashion week is all about designers' creativity where they present their collection to the buyers. When I create something in terms of look, then I always get calls from the press for information," she added. Talking about the payment at fashion weeks, she said: "Make up teams charge Rs 3,500 per face, tax is not included. The Fashion Design Council Council of India (FDCI) fixes rates with us in advance and we all sign contracts." Normally five-day fashion weeks have seven shows per day and one show has about 20 models. Pillai, who is in her mid 40s, says her team earns about Rs 3,50,000 that the members distribute among themselves. —IANS |
Excessive computer use among adolescents can spur multiple-risk behaviour (MRB) like drug use, drunkenness and unprotected sex. "Since adolescents are exposed to considerable screen time — over 4.5 hours on average each day, they're constantly seeing images of behaviours they can potentially adopt," explains Valerie Carson, who led new research in this regard. "TV and video games have more established protocols in terms of censorship, but Internet protocols aren't as established," adds Carson, doctoral candidate in School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, reports the Journal of Preventative Medicine. "Parents can make use of programmes that control access to Internet, but adolescents these days are quite savvy about technology and the Internet. It's possible that these types of controls aren't effective in blocking all undesirable websites," says Carson. Researchers found that high computer use was associated with approximately 50 percent increased engagement with a cluster of six MRBs, including smoking, drunkenness, non-use of seat-belts, cannabis and illicit drug use, and unprotected sex, according to a Kinesiology School statement. One explanation behind this finding is that a considerable amount of advertising that used to be shown on TV is now being shown on the Internet. In addition, computer usage by adolescents has increased considerably in recent years. — IANS |

Sreejita starts her film innings
Sreejita De, popularly known as Ash of Miley Jab Hum Tum, will soon be seen on the big screen, in Yashraj’s next Luv Ka The End. Unlike her role in the show where she played a tomboy, Sreejita will be seen in a stylish look in the film. We catch up with the pretty actress as she speaks about the film and her expectations from it as well as discusses her last TV show Miley Jab Hum Tum. Tell us about your role in Luv Ka The End?
I play Sonia, a high headed girl with loads of attitude. She is the kind of girl who knows the price of Bobbi Brown and MAC makeup kits but is completely clueless when asked about the Prime Minister of India. I am bestfriends with Rhea (Shraddha Kapoor). I am not allowed to reveal anything more about my role. How was it shooting with co-stars of the film? It was great and we never felt like we were shooting. We were a bunch of young actors, so everyday was like a party. Even Bumpy, the director is young and friendly so the shoot was super fun. Any memorable incident on the sets? There is one gesture of Shraddha Kapoor that I can never forget. She had forgotten to bring her contact lens solution to the sets and asked for my help. I gave her my solution and forgot about it. The next day, I was surprised when Shraddha presented me with a gift as a thank you gesture. It was so unexpected but memorable. Tell us about the song Freak Out? Yes, it is for the first time that a Bollywood song has been shot using stop motion technique. It was exciting when the team explained that breaking down the frames to make the picturisation interesting. But it was very tiring, as we had to change our T-shirts every few seconds and we also had to remember our body posture in the last frame for continuity. How similar or different is Sonia from Ash of Miley Jab Hum Tum? Sonia is completely different from Ash. Ash was a tomboy who was arrogant bossy and edgy. Sonia is girly and balanced. She tries to avoid getting into fights, unlike Ash. What do you miss about Miley Jab Hum Tum? I miss everything about the show. I had to leave the show when it was nearing its end because I had bagged Luv Ka The End but I still miss the whole team. I have no regrets as I made a new group of friends while shooting for Luv Ka The End and the Yashraj Films team treated us very well. Are you open to TV serials or do you want to concentrate on films? As an actor, I am open to all mediums of entertainment, including theatre. I do have high expectations from the film and I am hoping to make a mark in Bollywood. Which are your favourite college/youth-oriented films? I like Main Hoon Na and F.A.L.T.U. but my all time favourite film is Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. It is the best romantic film based on college life till date.
