Second phase of Patiala green cabs flagged off
Patiala, April 18 Ravee S Aahluwalia, the chief functionary of the Patiala GreenCABS said the Patiala Foundation had received an overwhelming response for this initiative and the project had now become a mission. The foundation has added another 20 green cabs making a total of 30 in association with the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board, which has also proposed to train traction drivers as tourist guides thereby enhancing their skills and tapping the tourism potential of the royal city of Patiala. Elaborating the benefits of the Eco-Rickshaw Cab Scheme, Aahluwalia, said, “The traditional rickshaws were made of wood, having weight of 100-110 kg but the Patiala green cabs introduced by our NGO are made of metal and weigh only 85-90 kg.” “This will reduce immense physical stress on the rickshaw puller and because of its aerodynamic design, it will be easier to ply on it. Our initiative has got a very encouraging response and the authorities of the Fatehgarh Sahib district administration have also approached us with a request to start the scheme in their district as well”, he added. “The basic idea behind the project is to promote eco friendly, short distance mode of transport, besides offering a sustainable livelihood to rickshaw-pullers. Since, the service has already been initiated in the city by NGO Patiala Foundation, we will be providing our full cooperation to them, so that they can gradually expand the service”, said Patiala DC Dipinder Singh. |

Residents protest setting up of distillery
Dera Bassi, April 18 They complained that with the setting up of this distillery here, the level of pollution would go up. According to the law of the environment and forest department, New Delhi, Rajasthan Liquor limited had organised a public hearing near Haripur Hinduan village where industry was being set up. In the hearing, Mohali ADC Mohinder Singh Kainth, SDM Puneet Goyal, pollution control board officials Xen RK Rattra, SE Samarjeet Goyal and SDO Anuradha were present. The residents of this area boycotted the hearing and officials organised a hearing at the dharna site where they were protesting. Factory officials said that this would be eco-friendly distillery in which wheat and rice would be used for making liquor. The cattle feed would be prepared from the waste material of the industry. This would be a project of Rs 80 crore and Rs10 crore would be spent on control of pollution. The residents of the nearby villages, who were protesting the setting up of the distillery, expressed the fear of pollution in the area. The people who filed their protest included Rajesh Kumar, Pardeep Kumar, Surmakh Singh, Lakhveer Singh, Col Ajit Singh, Surinder Singh Jolly And Satnam Singh Rampursainia. MC gives land on lease to PRTC
Bassi Pathana, April 18 The council in its agreement with the PRTC has mentioned that it will be mandatory for PRTC toconstruct the bus stand within two years and if it fails to construct, the council can cancel the contract. In its second resolution, the councilors expressed resentment for not covering the town under the Fatehgarh Sahib Master Plan passed by the state government recently. They urged the government. to cover the town under the master plan. In its third resolution, the council decided to hand over the work of lifting garbage from the town to a private company of Mohali, which would take it to Mohali recycle plant there. — TNS |

500 participate in heritage walk
Ambala, April 18 The heritage walk was organised by the local Chapter of Indian National Trust and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), which passed through the Mall Road and welcomed by Brig GS Lamba near the Kharga Stadium in the cantonment area. The walk concluded at the Company Bagh where a prize distribution function was organised in which Fateh Singh Dagar, director, Archaeology and Museum, was the chief guest. The local chapter of INTACH also organised the painting competition on heritage of Ambala and winners were awarded prizes. Brig Lamba told the main motive of INTACH was to protect environment, including old trees, ponds, lakes, parks and forests. He informed members that three “kos minars” were in a dilapidated condition in Ambala, which needed repair and the chapter had identified 25 heritage sites in Ambala. He also requested the members to spread the message to the rural areas by forming rural chapters. He made an appeal to the people for the security of old heritage monuments in the region. Dagar told Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda would lay the foundation stone of “Shahidi Samarak” in memory of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the 1857 revolution for Independence, which is to be built on over 20 acres of land on the National Highway 1 at Ambala Cantonment with an investment worth Rs 17 crore. |
Panchkula DC seeks day-to-day hearing in RTE case
Panchkula, April 18 The Deputy Commissioner said, "The case may be taken up on day-to-day basis since the present suit is regarding the implementation of provisions of the RTE Act and larger public interest is involved in this case”. She was replying to a public interest litigation filed by Pankaj and Sangeeta Chandgothia, a city based couple, seeking implementation of the RTE Act in private schools of the city After the petitioners gave no objection to the request by the DC the court adjourned the matter to April 22 next, where after the case was likely to be heard on a daily basis. Earlier, the district court had issued a show-cause notice to the DC and principals of six private schools asking them to reply to an application file by petitioners alleging non-compliance of interim orders issued by the court on March 8 whereby it had given orders staying admissions to 25 per cent of seats up to Class VII in schools for the academic session 2011-12, except as per the RTE policy framed by the Haryana government. The court had also directed the DC to give "wider publicity" to the policy through print and electronic media. Meanwhile, the DC and the private schools have sought more time to file their reply to another case with regard to contempt petition filed by petitioner Chandgotia. The court granted them time till May 12 next in the contempt case. |

Thieves decamp with taps, LPG cylinder
Zirakpur, April 18 In her complaint to the police, Suman, a resident of house no. 21, Highland Society, Baltana, stated that she went to her school and her husband also left for his office around 10 am. Puri said when she returned in the afternoon, she found that taps and cylinder from the veranda of her house were missing. She informed her husband about the incident and later he informed the police. A police official stated that they got the complaint and started investigations. A case will be registered after an inquiry, he added. |

Chandigarh, April 18 The Indian team lost to 1-2 to Chinese Taipei team. The Indian team, including Hyderabad’s Sheikh Abdullah and Fatehdeep Singh lost one single and one double match.
